William Smiths performance was really good in I am A Will Smith Movie. Lets see No Country for Supporting (even though Brolin should deserves it more then the Katie Holms Hairdo experience who'll win), adapted, and probably movie. TWBB Actor. I say they give Burton the director award, because lets face it his probably done after Todd, if not it'll go to the Cohens.

And his merry band of computer geeks will win Animated, but for my money TMNT was the best animated movie of the year. One of the few movies to be based off of a cartoon/tv show that did not totally basteridize the show or premise. Maybe it'll win best fight scene on MTV, no we all know 300 will get that.

It'll be nominated for the other 'major' awards but won't win them.

Day-lewis will get best actor.

Bardem will get supporting.

Cohens and Anderson will probably get either best film or best director.

Best adapted screenplay for cohens.

juno will get best original screen play to show that the oscars are hip and down with the kids and their indie films.

for the same reason ellen page will get best actress nom.

She deserved that more then her? Especially now a days you almost hope for an actress you like NOT to win the award. Because if they do you can say GOOD bye to them ever trying hard again.

HELL YEAH I SUCK TOES! Yeah man Sunshine rules. Fuck everyone calling it a ripoff, every movie at this point is a ripoff of something else. Plus say what you want about the last part of the movie, at least it was done very well. Fuck Fox Searchlight for promoting crap like Juno which plays just as well on a small screen, while shafting cinimatic event movies like Sunshine and Daywatch which should have been seen on a big screen to fully enjoy. But mainly fuck Juno and all you fags talking about how sweet and good it was, Jason Bateman was a perve. And as much as I hate him D.L. Hughley was right, a white girl gets preggers and we want to give her awards, a black girl gets pregnet and we send her a welfare worker. I am glad Juno is doing all it can to help promote teen pregency. Jason Reitman first you made us feel bad for big companys, now we good about a pregnet high schoolers. Why don't you get your dad out of the coma he is in and make us feel good about seeing his movies again? Oh wait too busy working on that buddy comedy about two guys who join the KKK?

I liked Jones in "Elah" but thought he was WAY better in No Country. Jason Reitman getting a best director nomination for Juno? Ugh, I wish he woulda gotten it for Thank You For Smoking. Into the Wild got the snub, and Atonement got the major shaft, but at least it's still up for best picture (although with those nominations it has no chance at winning obviously). After being ignored at the Globes, Juno gets nominated in almost every important category. It should also win in every case but I don't see that happening. Best director is probably the hardest but should be the no brainer, Every performance in the film is perfect, that says alot about the directing.

Greenleaf1, TLJ was much better In Valley of Elah than No Country because he had weaker material to work with. Though I think Elah is no where near the classic that No Country is, Jones' performance is 100% true and real. I keep remembering the scenes in his hotel room where TLJ wakes up in a cold sweat from a nightmare about his son, to his learning about his son's death, to his cutting himself while shaving, etc. It really is a bravura performance showing a real psychological breakdown of a character losing faith.

sorry for the double post. Zodiac didn't get anything simply because it was released almost a year ago. The Academy is populated by people---sure they're all the artists and stuff tha vote for their categories and what not, but like us , they're people and most people are dumb and forget what movies even came out in the past year, especially early 2007. either way, zodiac split critics for the most part

Didn't get any noms? I just realized how bad these noms are. Also how very little the academy wants comic book adaptations to exists. Really no awards for 300? I am not a 300 or die kind of guy, but if you going to give Golden Compass and Norbit noms, you couldn't give 300 sound editing or some shit? I blame all the meet the Spartans crap on right now which the Special Olympics of Oscar deciders probably got confused for 300. Seriously no Art Direction or Custom? Sweeny Todd is good and all, but its lacking in those departments where recent Burton films have been succeeding. The Oscars voters were like hmmm what big movie do we give praise to this year? OH Micheal Bay has a new movie, give him all the technical awards, he cups.

The Simpsons Movie is a hell of a lot better than Surfs Up and should have been nominated for animation. Second, the fact that Kings didn't get a nomination for Best Foreign Language film (Irish) is an absolute discrace. Third, No Country For Old Men is overrated. Fourth, bring back Billy Crystal.

Strange to see DB&BF nominated for several awards, but no best picture? I think I would have traded out Juno and Michael Clayton for that one and Into the Wild as far as best picture goes. Odd too that Schnabel's movie didnt end up on the foreign films list. Is there an eligibility issue there or something? Personally, Im rooting for There Will Be Blood for Best Picture. And yes, that forever in the future it may be said "Academy Award/Razzie nominee Norbit" is amusing...and sad. Im kind of surprised 300 didnt take that make-up spot especially considering the work they did to TASG to transform him into Xerxes.

And James Newton Howard's score to Michael Clayton gets nominated? All it consisted of was synth drones and ONE orchestral theme over the end credits! I'm a Howard fan, but his current scores to I Am Legend and Charlie Wilson's War were MUCH better. Ah well, at least the wonderful Ratatouille score got nominated, even if Alexandre Desplat's excellent music to Lust, Caution got shafted.

I really want to see Hansard & Irglova perform "Falling Slowly". But in other funny news for the August Rush Song nominee it says "nominees to be determined", like it doesn't specify which song. That's weird. I thought a lot of the nominations were surprising like Tommy Lee Jones for best lead actor with The Valley of Elah, when he was actually the best supporting actor in NCFOM, although I'm happy with Javier's nom too. If there is a ceremony it'll have a supercool bunch of nominees. The Coens and Paul Thomas Anderson and Johnny Depp and Viggo. Yeah, they better get that whole writer thing straightened out.

...well, maybe costume design, but seriously, what a terrible sequel. And Michael Clayton, while a good film, was hardly a great one, so I don't get all the love for that. Ditto for Juno. And Norbitt? The whole 'lets watch Rick Baker turn Eddie Murphy into a whole bunch of different characters" thing was old a decade ago now, so why the love? Scary. 300 should have gotten a couple of visual noms (fx and cinematography) as visually it looked like nothing that had ever come before it, and it really did create it's own world on film, whether you like the film or not. Likewise Cronenberg (Eastern Promises), Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd) and Andrew Dominik (Assassination of Jesse James...) all deserved director nominations far more than Jason Reitman (Juno) and Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton). Christina Ricci deserved some attention for her role in Black Snake Moan too, and should have replaced Blanchett's nomination for Elizabeth:TGA.

Oscars are a mixed bag of the worthy, baffling and just plain unworthy - news at 11.

Is this idea that Oscar ignores comic-based films based on FACT, like voting criteria, or just trends? Because for a long, long time, no one ever believed that a Fantasy film would win anything, and lo and behold, we get Lord of the Rings. So I think it just takes the right vehicle.

Actually, Superman The Movie was the movie to make comic books a legit source for movies.

Regarding 300 though, aside from VFX, I don't think it deserved nominations. It's pretty standard popcorn action, with overused slo-mo, a script that was lifted straight from the comic, and not suitable for movies, telling the story in soundbytes and catchphrases rather than well thought out dialogue

The only thing that sets 300 apart is the Greenscreen shoot used to make ancient Greece look like the comic, but that's hardly new. Sin City also had a greenscreen shoot and did a much better job in my opinion.

They did the Spidey and Superman effects, neither of which were were mediocre at best. The reality is, you've got to go to ILM or WETA to get quality effects these days.

Speaking of Sony Imageworks though...remember the cgi Justice League rumour that hit IESB a few months ago? I started that rumour. I made it up and sent it into IESB - and they ran it despite me being an untested and unproven source. What's the lesson here? IESB will run any old shit.

WTF. No Best Makeup Oscar nod for this film? Did you guys not see the KRUGG? What the fuck people. Best makeup of the year by far, and probably best makeup in a fantasy film hands down. It's amazing how far makeup technology has progressed since the Lord of the Rings films came out. Say what you want about the shitty script, actors and whatever else, but COME ON. The Krugg deserve this best makeup nod. If nothing else, think how badass they are, I mean, they fucking pick themselves up and sit in catapult, light themselves on fire, and then launch themselves. Sin City did it first - and better. And yes, watch any "epic battle" movie and you will see single heroes taking on multiple opponents (Lord of the Rings comes to mind). Again, bothing new.

The dialogue was awful. Nothing but soundbytes and catchphrases, that may have worked in the comic because of the nature of the medium, but for a movie, it was nothing more than guys screaming these catchphrases every few minutes.

I didn't say the action was sub standard. I said it was standard popcorn movie stuff, though if anything, it suffers because of the overuse of slo-mo.

300 is a popcorn action movie in the truest sense of the word...it's a comic book version of Rambo...you don't watch a Rambo movie to learn about the characters internal angst...you watch it to see the shit hit the fan, so you can cheer and shout as the blood flies. 300 was no different.

Enjoyable? Yes, absolutely...it's a movie to watch with a few beers, surrounded by friends, getting drunk and cheering at each beheading.

But groundbreaking? Certainly not.

I know sin city did it first but what it did was open up completely new possibilities of filmmaking. Plus it wasn't standard fare. Leonidas taking on the 20 guys at the start of the battle, and the Iron Maiden guy and the Captain's son taking on everyone. never seen it before and it was shot, photographed, choreographed, mixed, edited all perfectly. If those two scenes were put on youtube and the movie didn't exist, people would die by drainage of balls by whacking off too hard.

Transformer's "kick-ass" scene was the sight of Optimus Transforming. The amount of time it must have taken to generate that image is truly awe-inspiring. POTC's great scene is the sight of two ships sailing in the maelstrom, all the while sea-zombies, and one monkey cannon, are flailing about. Again, an excellent scene. Can 300 really lay claim to something as equally stunning in the effects department? Oh sure, 300's direction, choreography, and imagery is something special, but there really arent any "holy shit, how did they do that?" moments.

I can't comment on Golden Compass because I've never seen it (and never will, either).

As a crew member of Juno, it's funny to see so many of you rip apart a movie that was made in true indie spirit. It was, by far, the lowest budget film of the other oscar nominees. It's a simple film that tells a certain story well without all the bells and whistles. After working mostly on large budget comic book movies, it was a pleasure to work on something as intimate as 'Juno'. A film not made by a bunch of suits, but instead, by a bunch of twentysomethings who love what they do. I'm glad to see them being rewarded for it. Hate it if you want, but, I don't see many of you making your own movies.

Yeah I was typing that as you were posting your thing about not seeing it. Transformers deserves it, but still fucking Micheal Bay wanted to make a human movie...... then why use a series which only has like 3 humans in it? Its just the point, if 300 got some noms in there studios would be willing to shill out some more cash for more ambitious projects, because lets face it Comic/Graphic novel movies will need more and more money (even though 300 i guess was not that expensive). But now studios will see that while Golden Compass bombed in USA it got some Oscar nods, lets make another one, or another kiddie epic. At least Narnia look good.

What I mean is, 'Juno' is devoid of a lot of the standard filmmaking tools used now. CGI, Crane shots (i think we used one, a small jib arm), major movie stars, and constantly moving cameras. I'm glad Reitman was nominated. If you've seen his short films, commercials, or 'Smoking', you know he can make as glossy a product as anyone. But, his controlled direction on 'Juno' stayed within the context of the story. There was no need to make it a big, splashy film. He put his ego aside and allowed the actors and script to shine. That's good directing.

But I can sit down and watch the fight scenes from 300 and enjoy them(since that's why you go to film, to pass time, be entertained etc if you bring it down to a cosmic level), but bring up a better made film like atonement that fits into more 'quality' cinema, can you put that in your dvd player and watch a scene over and over and have a good time. I completely agree with you all about the crummy effects of Spiderman, the less-than original Die Hard 4 jet, and the fact that the golden compass looked like a coca cola commercial! BUT, you all have to agree that 300's effects were entirely matte-based, with the exception of a couple of cartoony (though intentional) cgi animals.

You guys are confusing excellent visual direction, which 300 had in spades, with visual EFFECTS, which were not as spectacular in terms of development or detail as some of the other effects movies this year. That is all I'm saying.

what about the cartoon credits, or the listing of what season it is? Just because you use static shots doesn't mean its amazing. Kevin Smith does that shit too. I know you have to be partial to it because you worked on it, but as an outsider, I think the movie was ok, not good, not great, def not best picture. I actually think it was kind of shallow and pointless. There was character growth shown in 30 seconds. It relied on using the same songs over and over and then having us watch the characters sing one of the songs. The title character should have at least learned something in the movie. Back in 99, Star Wars: Episode 1 was out and it contained the greatest effects we had ever seen up to that point. However, the most effective effect in terms of DIRECTION was that plastic bag in American Beauty. Again, obviously, the effects in Star Wars were superior, bu that plastic bag was more effective in its direction. That, I think, is where the academy makes the distinction, at least this year, anyway.

As a Crewmember of Juno, exeactly how many virgins/animals did Jason Reitman Judd Aptow and the Heads of Fox Searchlight have to sacrafice to Allah in order to get the kind of recognigtion it got? True "Indy Spirit" I am pretty sure every indie movie that comes out gets to slap on the name of a whatever name director is hot at the moment in order to give it that little extra kick of indy flavor? I am also pretty sure, in sticking with that indie spirit, getting the son of a big time director (who obviously has no gain from his name, nor any advantage) helps to keep that indie vibe? SO I guess what you are saying, as long as your movie is cheap to make its an indie? No longer will indies be made up of an unknown cast, or shown in 4 theaters. I guess Fox Searchlight is an indie making machine. I mean look at those tiny indie movies Sunshine and Daywatch that were made with the TRUE indie spirit. You make it sound like Juno was just a bunch of buddies makeing a movie? I guess useing a case a already really rich people didn't help at all in getting some funding for the film.

that's a valid opinion, but given than 300 is the least expensive of the nominees, it has some amazing "invisible" effects (enhanced camera work, transitions from CGI to live action) it's not an imposture to get nominated.

Besides, your assumption that because it's mainly matte paintings (which is wrong, but still) it's not worthy of the CGI-heavy POTC and SPidey 3 reminds me of the TRON controversy, only inverted: because it's not state-of-the-art, tech-heavy CGI fest it's not worthy to win? I disagree. I'm not the kind of guy to piss on good CGI (as some reactionary people seem to be, bashing anything CGI) but between blurry optimus, Baldy McClane surfing on an ugly XBox jet and 300... I choose 300 hands down.

See I think it's about balance

I love a good action scene as much as anyone...and yeah the trench run is one of the most fun sequences in movie history. But...take transformers for example...that movie had a terrible script and was nothing but cgi eye-candy. And yes people loved it. But I didn't. Sure the action was cool, but it was also empty (and made so sense..stupid plot holes) in terms of substance.

What bugs me about these kinds of fils is that there is no balance...the filmmaker tends to choose either visually cool stuff or story...never both. And I don't know why. Why not have both?

Look at Star Wars. Yes the Death Star sequence was fun...but it also had a context. There was a story behind it, you knew who these characters were. Why do people still watch A New Hope? The effects are severely dated, but it has a strong story and characters to back it up. It's my favourite movie, because it's both fun and engaging.

But if you want to talk about 300 and put everything but the visuals aside, again I have to disagree...the direction, the choice of shots etc was ok...but as I've already said, the constant use of slow motion in attempt to give it a "cool" style only served to take away fom the action. A lot of the techniques used were done in the Matrix (and utilised better back then in my opinion).

The slo mo really killed the action for me...bad direction.

Cause, as far as I can tell, 300's effects were masterfully directed/handled as opposed to the blurry use of effects in the other films. Also, while I do agree that the mattes used in 300 were truly something special, I'm just saying that that sort of effect is subtle in comparison to the in-your-face Bay technique, which gets more attention, and thusly, more nomination.

Matrix won that year because of bullet time. Simple as that. Of course bullet time wasn't actually a new thing. Lucas had even considered doing something similar for the saber duels, but decided to shoot it "normally" because it would have looked too different from the originals.

Plus, love him or hate him, Jar Jar was pretty revolutionary...moreso than the Matrix effects. Jar Jar and Watto lead to Gollum and ultimately Davy Jones and Optimus. (Both done by ILM, while Gollum was done by WETA).

In terms of the advancement of visual effects, the most hated Star Wars character ever is actually the most important and ILM deserved the Oscar for that alone...but it was given to Matrix.

my main complaint about the way 300 got shafted is that Oscars usually contextualize everything: even if Sean Penn gave an amazing performance as the baddie in The Brazilian Job, he wouldn't get nominated because... well, it's The Brazilian Job. It's the same with the VFX: they should give the oscar to the movie that combines the best effects possible on the best flick possible. 300 was by far the better film (and more meaningful - even if it's not Shakespeare) out of the shortlist of preliminary nominations. Hence my grudge against the academy

As for the slo-mo in 300 I respectfully disagree. It's not your usual John Woo rip-off, it was more like a meaningful take on the long Old Boy travelling, and really transcended the nature of the source material in my humble opinion.

One year, Springsteen's unremarkable song from "Philadelphia" won the Oscar over Neil Young's BRILLIANT song from the same movie. Years later, Randy Newman (the Susan Lucci of the Oscars) had a great song in "Toy Story 2" called "When Somebody Loved Me". Beautiful song. What song won that year? Some piece of garbage by Phil Collins called "You'll Be In My Heart" from "Disney's Tarzan". I don't think the voters even give a shit anymore, if they ever did. Although, I gotta admit to laughing a bit when Barbra Streisand had to read out Eminem's name as the Best Song winner for "Lose It" from "8 Mile" (or whatever that song was). You could almost see her holding back her gag reflex. I'm no fan of rap music and I truly don't understand how Eminem and, later, Three 6 Mafia could win a fucking OSCAR for those songs. The field of entries for Best Song is so small anyway that it seems ridiculous to even have the category in the first place. "Best Animated Feature" has a small field too, but at least those are MOVIES. If the OSCARS are gonna have a category for Best Song, then the Grammys need to have a category for Best Actor.

There is nothing more complicated than the organic photorealism of Kong. and that was 2005, ILM had ROTS and the digital character work was sloppy and there was alot fo errors and doesn't come close to Weta.

Uhh, all of the cgi work in the orginal matrix, while servicable, show none of the detail or texturing, or fluid movement for that matter, of the cgi work in Phantom Menace. Its like comparing spiderman 3 to Transformers--there simply is too much visual evidence to refute that statement. If you can't tell the difference, then you are either subjective or you really havent watched the film in a while. Try watching it in HD sometime for the full effect ;)

problem is that the effects were 200 times more ambitious than the first matrix. First Matrix had soft CGi on short shots. Whereas Reloaded had total new effects. Sure the Burly brawl didn't look photoreal, but that's because even then it was impossible, it was cgi for the camera shots, virtual cinematography, you just could not do that physically, watch it again and try to think how they could of done the CGI and you will see how complicated it was.

King Kong, as a film, was filled with shoddy effects, such as the poorly executed Bronto stampede and Kong/Rex fight. However, as a character model, King Kong was truly, truly impressive, hands down. Personally, I still think Rots's overal film effects were better, General Grevious, though very impressive in his own right, wasn't as ambitious or as detailed as Kong.

It's not just the look but the work. you could argue the photoreal Optimus but inorganic materials are easier to animate and light than organic hair. It's just fact. The fact Kong exists and moves and is animated is an achievement in itself, the fact he looks real is unbelievable. That's why Weta is the best company. Doesn't mean ILM is bad, they have gained alot in years, the margin between Weta and ILM isn't as large as it was before up to 2005, now it's very close. I hate the fact people always bring up the stampede, like that 2 min sequence discounts the other 2 hours and 30 mins of the greatest visual effects there is. If you study that stampede, it isn't the effects that is bad, it's the mind telling you the sequence is impossible thus you discount it as bad work. But then even if it were bad, Kong is the greatest CGI achievement there is and he was in more than half the movie. And then there was the incredible superimposition and the new york scenes which had heavy CGI but weren't even noticeable, if you watch the production diaries you would be astounded by how brilliant the effects were. And ROTS did not have better effects even overall, the dooku jump when he fights obi wan and anakin was terrible, alot of the lighting was bad, and the worst was that terrible glitch when yoda ignites his saber, terrible mistake.

But ILM are in my opinion, still on top. WETA are great, but they're not the revolutionary company that ILM are.

The difference between them is that ILM creates a lot of revolutionary techniques...and then WETA improve on them. And then ILM come back and improve again, while creating more pioneering effects.

WETA's work, while amazing, isn't pioneering...they simply try to improve on the work that ILM starts. ILM have been, and still are the real pioneers of the industry, and right now there's no one better. Jones and Optimus are proof of that.

This time next year, WETA's effects may look better, but they will still be based on the work of ILM.

Everyone thought that Davey Jones was really Bill Nighy covered in make up and with blue screen tentacles. Hell, I thought the same damn thing myself until ILM released that little tidbit a couple of months after the film's success. ILM allowed everyone to assume Jones was "real" for months and they were able to get away with it! That is how good Jones was, and I'm sorry, but Kong at NO TIME looked as sophisticated when it came to compositing. Just watch that first scene with Jones, in the rain, and suddenly lighting his pipe, and he still looks like he's actually in the scene. And don't even get me started on At World's End when they show him in broad daylight on the deck of his own ship and he seems to actually be standing there.

Yes, but Bale has been better in other roles (*American Psycho*, for example). Plus, hasn't the Academy taught us that if an actor establishes herself at an early enough age, they'll likely wait to acknowledge her – so sorry Ellen Page, but you don’t have a chance in hell. Finally, can Bale’s performance even be classified as supporting, when the main protagonist of *Rescue Dawn* is clearly Dengler. I should note I’m a huge fan of Herzog’s *Little Dieter Likes to Fly,* so a feature film on the same subject by the same director seems superfluous to me. I’m sorry, but Little Dieter just tells the story better. As far as *This is England* is concerned, it was a 2006 release, and a UK one at that.

I'm sorry, but you're simply misinformed if you think king kong's fur is harder to animate than the human eye or fire. Human Hair, is difficult, to be sure, but when we're talking about animal FUR, detail is less necessary. And if you doubt the validity of my statement, point to me one film other than POTC that displayed properly textured human eyes. Hell, even Gollumn, which came the closest to that point, displayed an obvious lighting/texture difference between his body and eyes. And NO FILM has been able to properly animate fire as yet. It still looks to much like napalm right now.

I don't remember what songs those were up against for the Oscars, but that is beside the point anyway. I don't see why the category for Best Song exists anyway. It seems like the Academy wants to give out an award for everything that had ANYTHING to do with the film, even tangentially. Melissa Ethridge won for a song that just played over the closing credits of a documentary feature. How the FREAK is a song playing over the closing credits a major enough part of a film to merit a freaking Academy Award? Is there a Tony Award for Best Playbill program? No. Is there a Grammy Award for Best Costume in a music video? No. Why? Because those elements are largely irrelevent in terms of the artistic nature of the actual medium being celebrated. I read somewhere once that the Best Original Song category was added solely to provide the opportunity to add musical numbers to the Oscar show telecasts and thus break up some of the monotony. The tail wagging the dog.

Bullet Time wasn't an 'in-camera' effect. In-camera implies it's done there and then when the footage is shot, in the camera it was shot on. Bullet time is an effect achieved by setting up 40+ cameras and then stitching them all together on a computer, so you really couldn't get much less 'in camera' than that if you tried.

Yes, I would say a detail heavy model like King Kong would be more photorealistic, but in terms of creating a living, breathing character that flawlessly interacted with the live action components, Davy Jones has Kong beat hands down. The subtle play of light and glimmer on Jones' face is remarkable. I would credit this to the work of John Kroll at ILM. Like Dennis Muren, he's been around from the start, and his work on The Abyss and T2, probably advanced the art of computer animation by five years at the least.

Yeah, the fire was a lot more convincing in the third film, but as you said, only because they actually used real fire/volcano footage and "cut-and-pasted" it where they wanted it. Thats why I get so bummed out by Lucas's direction in those films; its like the guy refused to use anything from the real world or conventionality, even if it meant a better looking picture. Just take a look at his pointless rendering of storm troopers with Fett heads. Rather than just film Fett wearing various suits and compiling them all together in one nice convincing image, he pointlessly uses cgi for the trooper bodies and then pastes fett's head on top in as unconvincing a manner as possible.

The thing about the Star Wars prequels though is that Lucas actually had hundreds of sets in each film. They all had some greenscreen, sure but that was because there was nowhere on Earth that looked like a lot of these places...it's not as if Coruscant could have been shot on location in New York.

ripped off everything in sight and had a pretty flimsy narrative to boot. They set up some interesting ideas for the sequels, then obliterated them with heavy-handed philosophical nonsense and tedious exposition. The original Matrix is a solid film but for my money Dark City was overall a much better and more thought-provoking film and was released two years earlier than the Matrix.
The death of Irish...

It's fairly easy to see why it's dead - It's not used in the "real world". You've got a few clusters where it's predominantly used (i.e. Gaeltacht region - about 90000 people out of 4.1 million!) & that's pretty much it as regards "heavy" usage, anything else is restricted to school. Businesses don't use it either of course, I can go into a Walmart in the US & see plenty of Spanish language ads in-store (Side by side with English versions), can't say that same of Irish owned stores such as Dunnes ;) Why? Because Irish's not used.

aside from Amy Ryan and Casey Affleck. They're the only two actors with roles that are written well and worth a damn. Ed Harris phoned in his performance. I mean the guy has a catalog of far stronger work to be saddled with the uninspired, predictable role that he had. Therefore he didn't deserve any supporting nominations.

For Bobinnova: Best Original songs go to songs that are written originally for the film - the majority of the Sweeney Todd songs are from Broadway - I don't know if they've written any original ones for the movie like they did for "Dream Girls." And let's stop busting "Enchanted," shall we? Those songs are already a return to the classical Disney form (remember "Beauty and the Beast"? "Aladdin"? Ring any bells?) and not only that, but are also cleverly written parodies of Disney songs. Disney's screwed up things before, but it's rarely dropped the ball, music-wise. I kinda hope the producers cave in to the writers already - I really want to see those songs performed live at an Oscars telecast!

Jar Jar was ground breaking at the time (anybody who thinks the Matrix had better effects is obviously letting their hate of TPM damage their objectivity) and Gollum improved on that technology. That said, Davy Jones buried Gollum (in both design and execution) so perhaps Weta will strike back with something even better. That said, ILM is and remains the best FX house and love or hate it, the Transformers looked amazing on screen. It deserves to win because there were few if any seams in that movie effects wise.

Thought for sure it would at least score a nomination for its Art Direction. Was there a single film more stunning to look at this year than 300? And the sound in 300 was extraordinary, too, especially during that first battle scene. The shutout of this movie from the Oscars seems like a very deliberate snub.

I still want to see Juno but I have this feeling it's a solid little flick that's being overly praised and will fade from memory by this time next year. The academy gets it wrong FAR MORE times than right. I'll still never forget when Denzel Washington won an oscar over Crowe's depiction of John Nash, the snubbing of Ian Mckellan for FOTR, LA confidential losing to Titanic, Forrest Gump winning over Pulp fiction, and those are just a few of the past twenty years. I could go waaaay back into the eighties for even more blunders, such as Morgan Freeman being snubbed while Tandy won, or two words: Annie Hall.

Did you seriously accuse me of trying to be hip and cool by not liking...The Matrix? You do realize that the Matrix, save some pop culture references, has completely faded from the public's attention? How is taking this film to task for obvious shortcomings supposed to make me "cool"? By the way, a film can be solid and even engaging while still being incredibly derivative, which the Matrix most certainly is. It borrowed heavily from various other films and media to varying degrees of success. That's a far cry from it being a watershed film, which it really wasn't save for maybe a few innovative camera shots. It's a decent film that has been worshiped by a large population of moviegoers who don't know any better, as they think the Matrix ranks up there with films like the Terminator, Aliens and Bladerunner. It doesn't. Period.

Didn't the same issue arise for Howard Shore when the score for the Two Towers was disqualified from the Oscars because of the use of "existing" themes (namely, the Fellowship theme)? But then the score for ROTK WAS allowed to compete the next year, and as we all know that won along with everything else they were nominated for. So I don't get the disparity - did Shore (and PJ also, I'm sure) get the rules changed? Because you're right, the score for TWBB is wonderful and certainly deserving of consideration.

I couldn't agree with you more about how cool the Matrix was (the first one, mind you). I still believe that film is one of THE action action movies, especially because its in the same vein as Predator, Aliens, and T2. On a side note, it still irks me that Bay couldn't do the same thing with Transformers. That premise had all the elements going for it, up to and including an ILM effects smorgesboard, and Bay still couldn't pull it off. Oh well...

I can't say anything more about the art-filled genius of Ellen Page's performance than has already been said. My only real qualm about them is the change in style and structure for the final film. Some absolutely fantastic scenes, however, and a fairly ballsy finale for our leading hero.

My comment about the Matrix being relevant in today's world was a direct response to your insipid attacks claiming my dislike of the Matrix was some sort of hipster position. Honestly, I was never in love with the film because it's an incredibly flawed movie. And while all films may have derivative aspects in one way or another, The Matrix took from many superior films and came out merely decent, which is what separates great films from average ones.It offered nothing new or innovative to the genre but merely made it look "cool". It's a decent film but nothing groundbreaking. Deal with it and move on. None of your pedantic fanboy squeals will change this.

Zodiac was my favorite film of the year but I understand how the Oscars work with their short-term memory. But I don't understand how it didn't get noms for editing or cinematography. Also, Juno was an absolutely fantastic film that I once was writing off as a Little Miss Sunshine copy but there's something they do not have in common, in my opinion. One was great and the other was overrated. I Am Legend was a decent film, a pretty good one, until that stupid spanish lady showed up and starting cooking his bacon. And the special effects really bugged me because it displayed how lazy some people are nowadays. Tell me why they couldn't just spend the money and hire a bunch of extras to play the creatures in that film. I think something like that is unforgivable and definitely weakens the film for me. I still have to see There Will Be Blood but Zodiac was my fav and I believe No Country will win best picture. I also liked Sunshine, Atonement, Once, The Orpahange among others. But I didn't think Into the Wild was absolutely fantastic so I can see why Juno got the nomination and not that. I'm just going all over the place so I'll stop now.

It's obvious right from the start that Blanchett's nomination for "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" is a filler nomination - just like Keira Knightley's nom for "Pride and Prejudice" was a filler nomination - they just needed an able body to fill the ballot. You know why that is? Because this is yet another year where Hollywood hasn't bothered to write enough movies with good female leads. Fuck! They NEVER have this problem with guys - guys are clawing each other's eyes out to end up on the ballot, but the Oscar pool is so shallow for the women that they'll let just about anyone in.

Granted, some of these movies are good even great, but, and it's the big two handed, grab your Burger King Double Whopper eating, late night downtown booty shaking, use your frequent flier miles for an extra seat to be comfortable, turn sideways to get out the door but, and it is this....what about this. Hollywood loves to think of itself as important. That's why most of the time the categories are full of selections that are self-congratulatory. However, except rarely are the nominations or winners ever the "best". One reason is that it's subjective, there is no best unless it is measured empirically. As to now, there is no such measure, and so this contest, like a Miss Sweet Potato competition for 4 year olds at the county fair is simply a matter of popularity. There were thousands of movies released last year, and hundreds that could have been considered for best picture. What about "Black Snake Moan", "Zodiac", "300", "Beowulf", "Waitress", "Knocked Up", "Fido", "Rescue Dawn", "The Bourne Ultimatum", "3:10 to Yuma", "Things We Lost in the Fire", "American Gangster", or "Enchanted"? But no. Well, I guess they are in good company. Here is a partial list of films that didn't win either, "Munich", "Billy Elliot", "Blade Runner", "The Maltese Falcon", "Ragtime", "A Few Good Men", "Dr. Strangelove", "Field of Dreams", "Memoirs of a Geisha", and "Cinderella Man" (which was the best picture for 2005 but it did what was considered poor numbers at the box office so it was left out). As for me, I am going to nominate my own selections for the categories and have my own little celebration to announce the winners. I think I will put a red carpet out on the sidewalk, invite a few neighborhood kids to take pictures, and have them ask inane questions like, "Who are you wearing?", "Are you enjoying the attention?", and "Where's Britney?"

sometimes you win for effects not by being the first, but being the best. the matrix had the best bullet time effects, way better than the GAP ads or Lost in Space (which I believe didn't even use the multiple cameras trick, which is why it looked and felt much different.) The bullet time effects still had a ton of CGI, if you look at the originals it's all greenscreen. Matrix still has some of the best visuals I've ever seen, along with Blade Runner, A.I., parts of The Two Towers, parts of Kong 05, parts of Pirates 2 and all of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The last 2 matrixes werent nearly as exciting as the first one. All the tension was gone after neo defeated agent smith, they shouldve saved that final fight from prt 1 for the end of the 3rd movie. The writers were clearly taking a gamble and didnt plan on making 3 films. As far as innovative, i think the concept for the story and they way they illustrated it was the most creative. Very similar effects were seen before matrix came out in the first Blade movie..even wire work has been around forever.

Do you know that I've never ever met a single soul that liked that film? I realize that my statement is purely anecdotal, but still, you'd think with the amount of moviegoers a person runs into in their lifetime they can find ANYONE who likes ANY FILM, but that is one of the films that no one seems to like. Maybe its just too highbrow for the crowd of neanderthals I hang with or something, but there it is. Hell, I even stood behind the decision for Shakespeare in Love to win, despite massive opposition to the contrary, but no one, I repeat NO ONE seems to stand up for the English Patient.

The other problem with the Matrix films was that they wrote themselves into a corner by making Neo a superman by the end of what eventually came to be the first act. Its not the writers' fault, really, since they were obviously not planning on sequels. Lucas had a similar problem when he put the destruction of the ultimate weapon in his initial film, too. And contrary to what he says now, he never planned for sequels, either. His laziness started to show, however, when he decided to reuse the death star for the final act when what he should have done was allow the rebels to make an all out assault on the imperial center. No, I didn't say corruscant, I said the imperial center--that was about as much planning as Lucas had for where the emperor resided.

Oh, I forgot! He sees a horse... AND THEN HIS CAR BLOWS UP. WOOOOWWEEEEE! What a powerful cinematic moment! Except that it was the most contrived moment ever. It had no relevance and no tie in to the story whatsoever other than to have a scene that the filmmakers thought would look cool. And then the movie ends with the hero getting the villian to confess to everything before, OH WHAT'S THAT, bringing out a HIDDEN TAPE RECORDER! "Haha! I TRICKED YOU! I got it all on tape! Everything you just said, you supposedly smart person who all of a sudden for the sake of the story became the dumbest person in America". Apparently an ending that I saw on a recent episode of Hannah Montana is good enough for the academy to give an academy award nomination to. What a fucking JOKE that movie was.

Not sure what this has to do with the Oscars, but there's really no need for Ireland to apologize for Flatley. I'd say it's more the responsibility of the Chicago suburbs. Apparently, back in the day, when my wife managed a Blockbuster, he would come in with his fake Irish accent, and think he was all that. Because what the world needed was a step-dancing rock star!! Juno had heart and I enjoyed it but it's not Oscar good. Thank You for Not Smoking was. Some of the Juno dialogue was tough not to laugh at. It was so forced. Jesse James isn't getting love because so few people had a chance to see it. Warner Brothers really messed up the release of the movie. Has to be one of the worst handling of a film release that I've seen. Time will be good to Jesse James. It should be out on video in a month. Rent it. Daniel Day-Lewis will win Best Actor. Man is amazing to watch. Rambling fool in interviews though. By the way, Charlie Rose had Anderson and Day-Lewis on his show. Google Video has the clip. lates.

moon dog I agree with you there, they did make neo into some kind of superman by the third film..even in the second one it was way over the top..Everything just felt flat after the original film. I guess several trilogies suffer from this, the third Blade, back to the future, star wars included- the third movie shouldve moved on to something more original. Eventhough ewoks seemed original enough at the time, the enlarged christmas ornament (dethstar) was way too lame for the third.

At last year's SIGGRAPH, the ILM team told us of how they were working on Transformers, and they would send their extensive VFX work to someone, who would then forward it on to Michael Bay. Within minutes an e-mail would come back reading "this will do for now, MB". That type of demand for excellence is what got us the "Oscar-nominated Transformers". I love saying that today. Steve Jablonsky's score should have been nominated, as well as Hans Zimmer's final POTC score. Let the Haters Hate, but in a few weeks, we can expect to be calling it the Academy Award Winning Michael Bay's Transformers. No Sacrifice, No Victory!

visuals and sound is about all transformers had going for it , with the exception of a few cool action sequences..but even then, they were either way too brief or hard to understand with all the out of focus and quick cutting..For the upcoming TF sequel- I hope Michael bay quits lying to himself about the "badassness" of the first movie and makes a better story and* please* the action more comprhensible and less manic MTV video-like. SOmeone get him a copy of Transmorphers he could learn alot from that flick.

So, Surf's Up gets the nod over Beowulf? And Golden Compass get the nod over Transformers - or Stardust for that matter. There is no fucking excuse for this! Beowulf was a significant achievement in animation. Sorry about my poor grammar above, I was kinda thrown off by the news when I wrote it. Getting back to the talkback at hand, I gotta say that I think Hal Holbrook is due. The man is consistently amazing, even in his small roles (Hell, he even impressed me in Creepshow) and brings a certain class to his roles. He'll be the one I'll cheer on, even though he's probably a dark horse. As far as Persepolis goes, I agree with some that it may upset Ratatouille, mostly because it's politically relevant, and the Oscars have become more and more of a soap box. But the animation never struck me as top-notch. In fact the art style brings back memories of The Critic. I kept waiting for Jay Sherman to dance across the screen.

The first two I guess I can see, given how they've had honors a-plenty, but Adams had what most people would consider the performance of a lifetime in a freakin' Disney movie! TANJ, people.

I call it bullshit. Academy Awards have no credibility. That's the best movie of the year IMO. David Fincher should at least receive Best Director nom, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr) and even Best Visual Effects for the astounding FX shots of Transamerica construction time-lapse and the overhead fixed shot of the cab moving on the street of SF. Fuck the Oscars for amnesia, proving it's packed with uptight old geezers who doesn't know shit about what makes a good true-crime thriller that emphasize police prodecural as the suspenseful part of the movie.

by Tourist

08:40:41 PM
3:10 To Yuma being snobbed is a sign of how out of touch the academy is? It was one of the worst major release films of the year. Zodiac was a very, very well mounted production, but its source material sucked and it covered one of the most over exposed news stories in history. Jesse James however...What a shame. I know it was plauged with production delays, and that they are evident in the ramshackle structure of much of the movie, but even given that, it was amazing. The academy loves performances, so thats why Reitman got nominated. Tony Gilroy, I got no idea. Michael Clayton just wasn't very good. And Fincher? Well, it was really fucking good work, but not as good as Dominik or Penn. So its not like he got left out on his own. Joe Wright also got skipped, and Atonement was a far better film than Zodiac. As far as Gone Baby Gone? Nothing to write home about...But damn, Amy Ryan was fantastic, but has no chance againt Cate. Affleck was also fucking amazing in Jesse, but no chance against Bardem. Oh, and Little Miss Sunshine was ten times better than The Fountain or The Prestige. You can't even compare Little Miss Sunshine to half backed crap like those. Beowoulf/Simpsons/Surfs Up are all cut from the same toilet paper. Why choose between them, they all sucked equally as hard. I guess Surfs Up gets preference because it was an animated movie as opposed to a traced movie or a television episode that accidently ended up on the big screen. But yeah, Michael Clayton is my biggest WTF? Todd and Zodiac just aren't as good as the slavish fanboys desperately want them to be, so I understand why they were looked over. My only dissapointment is Into The Wild and Jesse James not really getting the love they deserve. Don't really understand the Juno backlash either. It's not like it was fucking Cloverfield or some pile of shit pimped to death by a bunch of whores. It was a pretty good film that probally got a little more love than it warranted.

Has everyone completely lost their minds? Hey, I think Ellen Page is absolutely adorable and a great little actor, but JUNO was just not that great a movie. Just being a snarky teen and stringing together and endless stream of pop-culture references with an indie rock soundtrack doesn't make a great movie (unless your Quentin Tarantino and lots of people get killed in a cartoonishly fetishy fashion for freaks). But, then again, I'm not a 18 year old coed undergrad anymore, so, most of this movie was lost on me; probably would have loved it if I was an 18 year old girl during my first semester at college.

I thought Juno was okay in a Napoleon Dynamite kind of way, and I didn't see the implausibility. all kinds of girls/women get pregnant. They mostly have vaginas, uteri and sex drives so what's stopping them? Even the fat girl with coke bottle glasses and speech impediment in school could probably find some weird immigrant guy to nail her for a while if she was in the right place at the right time.(yeah, that wasn't my mom, beat you to the punch) I just didn't think Juno was Oscar-worthy. The whole Minnesota scene is kind of trapped in its own time capsule/bubble and I thought the movie was an enjoyable product of that, much like Dynamite was about a magical Mormon thrift-store world where the 80's never dies.

I had no problem understanding her for the most part. And her accent is indeed one of the movie's charms. It is unlike any other film over the last 10-15 years. The cinematography is nothing short of stunning, and at times brilliant in it's use of HD as a format unto itself, unlike all the posers like Fincher who try and make HD look like film. Mann says he shoots HD cause of the look of it. If he wanted a film look he'd shoot film.

Mr. Nice Gaius - your name says it all. I love your dismissal of the film as a comedy, really shows either one of two things, your age or your taste. For your sake I hope it is age, cause you are one sad lying cuntly bastard.

Tell me little Node, did you think TWBB was one of the best movies of the year before you even saw it? Thought so. Maybe in a few years time, like with The Departed, you scummy fanboys will have the benefit of hindsight and see what a deplorably average film TWBB was. Day Lewis is a total ham throughout the film, as usual. The guy is an awful actor, sorry, he is. He ACTS! And he does a John Huston impersonation! Wow, what a performance. And hey, when he starts yelling in the church he sounds not like Daniel Plainview but like Daniel Day Lewis. I guess Day Lewis had no audio of Huston yelling, or he could have impersonated that. I'll admit the first 30 minutes or so were quite good, but then the movie tanks. Boring and uninvolving. And a character study? Please, just, please, don't embarrass yourselves. The movie was not complex, it was not interesting, it was not detailed. Comes nowhere close to being as good as Assassination of Jesse James. Now THAT is a character study, not vapid shit like TWBB.

Industry Killer! - Heat better than Miami Vice? Nope, sorry dude. And Collateral? Please tell me you're joking. The only Mann film better than Miami Vice is Thief, and only by a hair.

And Node, please keep it up. I just LOVE the fact that you passionately defend a movie made for 14 year old girls in junior high. Says so much about you, your intellect, your taste or lack thereof. Classic stuff, douchebag.

Since when did reality have a skewed perspective? You're so far to the Left that you think anything to the right of you is fascism.

The Nazis were ardent socialists (hence the term “National socialism”). They believed in free health care and guaranteed jobs. They confiscated inherited wealth and spent vast sums on public education. They purged the church from public policy, promoted a new form of pagan spirituality, and inserted the authority of the state into every nook and cranny of daily life.

The Nazis declared war on smoking, supported abortion, euthanasia, and gun control. They loathed the free market, provided generous pensions for the elderly, and maintained a strict racial quota system in their universities—where campus speech codes were all the rage. The Nazis led the world in organic farming and alternative medicine. Hitler was a strict vegetarian, and Himmler was an animal rights activist.

Do these striking parallels mean that today’s Libs are genocidal maniacs, intent on conquering the world and imposing a new racial order? Not at all. Yet it is hard to deny that modern progressivism and classical fascism shared the same intellectual roots.

You could argue, but you'd be wrong.

Ridiculous plot holes like Waingro's involvement in the crew, and Val Kilmer not getting caught at the end. All of Ashley Judd's scenes are awful and boring. Diane Venora is an awful actress. Amy Brenneman is gross. I could go on all day about the flaws and myriad of boring scenes and sequences in that film. Also, DeNiro dies, which is ridiculous. Pretty (yet meaningless) photography, grandiose (yet writerish) dialogue, over-the-top acting by Lewis and Spano, violence, and humor? masked an otherwise and yet another soulless film from PTA. Why was the audience I was with laughing every 10 minutes? Was I watching a comedy or a drama? I prefer No Country for Old Men for Oscars. It is wittiererer, clevererer, suspensefuller, more experimental in its experimentation, more meaningfuller. DD Lewis was better in Gangsters of New York, New York, imo...

was the only reason to watch gangs of New York. if you think leo can act I suggest you watch the scene in Gangs where, leo is in bed and Day lewis comes in and sits in the rocking chair draping himsself in the stars and stripes and the camera pulls in to Bill the buthcers face as he talks. that wasnt just a scene it was a masterclass in acting.
