Something about mammoth's catch my eye also, so when this was on the Sci-Fi channel the other day, against my better judgement, I tried to watch it. I've liked Tom Skerrit every since M.A.S.H., but this movie is a total waste of time, and the SPFX looks like it cost them about a buck and a half to create.

Of an Itchy and Scratchy cartoon. He ruined Walk the Line and he damn near ruined 3:10 to Yuma. Which is really saying something given the cast he had to work with. What pisses me off about him is that he gives his audiences no credit whatsoever. Anytime there's something he wants to hammer home, well, he literally hammers it home. Usually, by having a character say something he wants us to think. For example, when young Johnny Cash says to his brother, "Why are you so good?" Gee, thanks Jim, the glowing light around him in every scene wasn't enough of a tip off. Glad you cleared that up.

Best damn scene in the film. I unashamedly love The Rock though, it's over the top action entertainment done right. Still the best and most enjoyable film that Bay has made in my opinion. Besides, how can you not love a violent action film with a cast that includes Sean Connery, Ed Harris, Nic Cage, Michael Biehn, David Morse, John Spencer, William Forsythe, Tony Todd, John C. McGinley, Xander Berkeley, Bokeem Woodbine and Jim Caviezel as the guy in the jet fighter (and not even the lead jet fighter guy...)? Fun on a stick. But yeah, slow week...

the reason for the crew is explained well by the physicist who does a commentary track--when the computers fail, the people are the last backup. his analogy was that you could fly a plane even today completely by robots, but no one would book a flight on that plane without a human pilot there as backup.

it may not be "packed" with extras but least they have some, plus these are the extras from the criterion edition so you pay less for all the same features plus better picture and sound, thats worth it i think. i still dont understand how so many catalogue movies get released on blu-ray and HD-DVD bareboned, but the regular dvd edition has extras and is sometimes even loaded. after price, thats the main reason i havent fully given into hi-def. just like regular dvd, these hi-def releases will eventually be double dipped and released properly.
pc vs. console

it's the difference between wine and beer. pc's look better and have better gameplay mechanics. also, for FPS i NEED a mouse. console's are funner with a bunch of friends over, and sometimes are more quickly accessible. PC is better, like someone said above consoles are becoming more and more like PC's. and the WII is the best new console out there. PS3 sucks, XBOX360 has the most versatility - even beyond PC just cause consoles are so much more popular. don't know why, it's cheaper to pay the extra you'd pay to get a nice video card (since nobody I know who has a console DOESN'T have a computer.)

Sunshine: Friday the 13th meets 2001
by grampageezer
Jan 20th, 2008
08:03:51 AM
Sat down to watch "Sunshine" last night and noticed how hard this movie was trying to be this year's version of Kurbrick's "2001: A Space A Odyssey". I gave it a chance until it got to the last third of the movie where it decided to turn into your typical slasher movie with it's patented religious nut-case killer stalking the ship. That's when I ejected the disc, sealed it back up in it's Blockbuster envelope and dropped it in the mailbox. Glad I ddn't buy it. What is it with all the animosity between crew mates in today's sci-fi movies? One or more people always flip out and start sabotaging the mission. Wouldn't you think NASA or whatever imaginary space agency that's running the show in the movie would do psychological profiles of its crew members before sealing them together for a year or more? Imagine if the real Space Shuttle's crew were always at each others throats while in space, or trying to interfere with the mission. And do these hack screenwriters behave they are actually capturing real life when they make their characters so annoying and unlikable by having them constantly arguing and fighting between themselves to the point that we actually root for the killer to get rid of these irritating dickheads as quickly as possible? Give me an old-fashioned movie where you actually care about the people in it.
A couple of notes on Man on Fire and Sunshine.
by rbatty024
Jan 20th, 2008
08:50:53 AM
While I though Man On Fire had some great moments, as a whole it was disappointing. I hate, hate, hate easy redemption in films. Let me get this straight, he redeems himself in the eyes of God...by torturing and killing lots of people. Sure, it was to save a little girl, but doesn't the Bible have a few things to say about killing? Like most Christians, this film was completely unaware of its own hypocrisy. It would have been better if he was certain he would be damned by killing people to save the girl, but doing it anyway. That would have made an interesting film. Of course, I don't think that would play in Peoria.

As far as the mental situation of the crewmembers, I have two words for you: Lisa Nowak. You never know how people are going to react when they're shoved into close quarters with one another for two years. Besides, most people on Icarus II had logical arguments behind their actions. They may have argued but at least they argued like scientists. I love the part when, what in any other film would have been a big moral decision about whether or not to kill the guy who's losing it to preserve oxygen, becomes "of course we should kill the bugger."

SUNSHINE WAS A FEAST FOR THE SENSES (SPOLIER)
by BringingSexyBack
Jan 20th, 2008
08:57:16 AM
Amazing to watch and a totally engrossing movie. The sets and effects put to shame anything Michael Bay ever put out. Yes, it was 2001: A Space Odyssey, Armageddon, Event Horizon, Alien and maybe some Star Trek mixed together, but it was still quite a unique movie with incredible visuals and compelling characters. As for why they're fighting so much ... hello, they've been in space for years together on a doomsday mission, with life on our planet hanging in the balance. Maybe if they sent Dubya up there he'd have a fun time of it but these people took their mission seriously. And that's why they had a psychologist on board.

I was surprised by Chris Evans, as I really hate him in FF. But he was intense and believable. His anger was focused and you know where it came from - his sense of duty. His final scenes were mesmerizing.

Yeah so, I was one of those people that bought a HD-DVD player during pre-Christmas sales. No need to feel sorry, Gungan Slayer. For $150, I got five HD-DVD movies free and what is at worse, a nice upconverting DVD player. I'll be picked up a Blu-Ray player or PS3 as soon as the prices shrink a bit.

Just watched it the other night. It was much better then I thought it would be, didn't really hear much about this film other then the few reviews on this site. I do agree the last third third of the movie starts to lose focus and introduces a completely unnecessary extra element of danger to the mission.

The first half of the movie is the best with the crew dealing with an a mission to save the Earth that seems doomed for failure, but no one on the crew is willing to admit it openly. I liked the tension within the crew, this a bunch of scientists and technical experts for the most part, people that would be hard to get along with on Earth, much less a million mile trip to start a new Sun. They are also the second mission to make the trip, so you get the feeling they are back up plan, not the first stringers.

Not the perfect movie, but as someone who is starved for any kind of Sci-Fi movie out there, I had a good time with it.

"Round eyes loving Michael Bay" Seriously: lame, offensive and stupid all at once. Harry got one thing right: Con Air is a serious guilty pleasure. But I *really* need to find a better site for movie news.

... caveat the fact that you enjoyed The Rock. What is it with irony today? You're not allowed to enjoy anything but black & white movies about gay cowboys from Ulan Bator eating pudding and contemplating life (or some piece-of-shit metaphor like a grilled cheese) without saying that you enjoyed it on some guilty, ironic level. Well fuck that and the elegant string-of-pearls configuration it rode in on... Fuck being too cool for school. The Rock is a fantastic action movie. The second half isn't as good as the first but then the second girl I screwed last night wasn't as good on top as the first but I still had a fucking good time you risible cunts. Pretend for a second that its OK tot just enjoy movies. Suppose that the opinions you express here do nothing to make you a better, cooler person in the eyes of the world. Now close your eyes, take a breth and admit to yourself that you like The Rock.... That's better. Now, who wants to know who really shot JFK?

Every time you say something bad about The Rock, a puppy's dreams get deep fried in a sandwich with peanutbutter. Just making sure you know what your responsibilities are in life.

Has a surprisingly sharp screenplay which is why it's so watchable. Add that to the gloriously OTT phototgraphy and you have action movie gold. Much better than the ;cut and paste' action movies we suffer these days.

Great until the last third, then fell apart. Common theme with Boyle/Garland - same thing happened with 28 days later and The Beach. The last act just doesn't hang. Still reckon Boyle would churn out a hard edged ALIEN sequel. If not, Marshal would suffice.

D-War is really better than Con-Air? Are you mad?! I just watched D-War last nite and it was terrible terrible shit. The only way in which it is better than Con-Air is it's comedic value. It is completely unintentional, but it is much more funny. I like how all the Koreans in that movie came back to life 500 years later as fuckin white people! And did you notice how many times those white people just ditch Craig Robinson (the only black guy in the movie)? WTF?
Gaming: Consoles vs. PC

I don't think there is much argument that a PC is better then a console, however the problem I have run into in the past which made me give up on PC gaming is the fact that no matter how top of the line you buy your machine, in 3-6 months there will be games that come out that you already need to upgrade something on your computer for, or your computer will run it and it will run slow or other programs start magically stop running properly. I now just prefer to use a console for games and my computer for the internet and office-type programs, throw in the occassional flash game here and there and I am set. Plus, with a console, at least you get five or so good years out of it without having to make any upgrades(besides downloading firmware) And by the way, the PS3 has "Ratchet & Clank" "Uncharted: Drakes Fortune" "Madden 2008" "assassins Creed" "Guitar Hero III" "Resistance Fall of Man" With tax that right there is about $400 worth of good games, so unless you have a ton of cash to spend on games, all those 2007 titles should keep you busy before 2008 titles start getting released.

Horrible movie for hipsters that find weird pretentous stuff funny. The Rock is straight up brainless fun action. If you don't like that then you hate life.

I will go to my proverbial death bed not knowing what the hell you guys are talking about. ZODIAC was an average movie at best. There was nothing the least bit original about any of it. The story's been made into a movie like eight different times. And frankly, it felt like the eighth time trying. Now while it's not the pure unadulterated crap that was SON OF SAM (another high profile director trying to put a fresh spin on an old topic), it's still nothing to write home about. The only thing this movie had going for it was budget and casting. Also, please don't make me explain this again ... Just 'cause a movie has Robert Downey Jr. in it doesn't automatically make it a good film. I did actually enjoy his performance in it, but a movie needs more than just one good performance to make it a quality film. Actually, I'll give you Gyllenhal's performance too. But my point. The story's tired. And I didn't take anything different out of this one than I did out of any of the other renditions. No offense to all you David Fincher fans. Fincher's great, but even the Coen's have a slip up every once in a while (see INTOLERABLE CRUELTY). It's bound to happen. I think this is his miss. It's a near miss, but it's a miss all the same.

That was funny. I think all film analyist and students should be thankful of the never ending supply of multi edited movies that are now made available as of recent. Such as the complete America Pie series offered in both rated and as the director intended unrated. Who would have thought American Pie would start the unrated revolution?

To me was nothing more then a very good episode of Law and Order. Namely CI. Watch like 4 episodes of Law and Order, slap Zodiac in, watch another Law and Order episode. You will not be able to tell the difference. Solid movie, but its not even close to Seven of Fight Club. Almost as good as the Game. Shit NIN video for Only was better. I hear all these movie critics (Roper Harry) talking about how people are going to go back to this film. Yeah just like you can go back to an early Law and Order and still be entertained.
Sunshine vs. 28 Days Later vs. the Beach

I completely understand why people get pissed off about the last third of Sunshine. I liked the movie, but the last 20 minutes were like "Huh?" That said, I don't get the complaints on the last third of 28 Days Later. That pretty much made the movie for me. As far as the Beach "movie" goes, I don't think that can be blamed on Garland at all. It wasn't anything like the book.

They obviously need a manned mission. Would they really risk leaving the survival of the humans to a robot?!
