As much as I want more BSG..

although I guess it's not a consolation to the people losing their jobs. I can't believe that after the Globes fiasco, the producers still aren't giving the WGA what they deserve. This really doesn't seem to be a game of chicken to the WGA, if the producers think they can just wait for a surrender. Anyway I'd be thrilled if the spinoff happens, because while I'm all for a show going out while it's strong, just four seasons are not enough for the BSG universe; many stories left to tell....

I hope they do this. But then I also think it'd be a great move, when the current BSG is all over, to do a continuation/wrapup of the classic Battlestar...Larson, Hatch & all. New show is far better, no question...but I still love the original and think it deserves some genuine closure.

In an e-mail to TV Guide's Mike Ausiello dated 12/8/07, I said "It seems to me that if the AMPTP and the WGA don't come to a deal before the Christmas 'hiatus' is over, there will be little to no time for pilots to be developed and finished for consideration for 08-09. With the recent news of broken-down talks, this seems likely. Are there any pilots from 2007 that you think will be brought to series? I'm thinking Football Wives is a sure bet, but what else? Might Sci Fi go ahead and pick up Ron Moore's 'Caprica'? I'll bring you some of my very own creation--Smurf Salad--next time I'm in New York if you think the latter."

With so many choices for today's consumer, you're slowly killing yourself by not solving this strike. How long before "Manimal" and "Misfits of Science" scripts are dug up to offer "new" content on the networks and cable outlets. Maybe this strike is a blessing in disguise. People will rediscover family time and actually throw the ball around with their sons and daughters. Nightly board games around the dining room table will resurrect themselves. Ritalin doses will diminish and childhood obesity will cease to exist. On second thought...

Is to WRITE your own original script. Buy FINAL DRAFT. Finish it. Polish it. Register it with the WGA (It costs 25 dollars), and then send it off to get it copy righted. Then, write a one sheet. Register that. Send the one sheet off to every agent in town. Aim for the big 3. Wait a few weeks, and do it again, and again and again. Eventually, there is a chance you will be called in. And if you're lucky, it's all down hill from there. (No, it's not, actually). Now you're ready to write your next script.

Goodness me but this madness needs to end. The studios need to stop making like they don't need anyone to write anything. They're like children who hold their breath and turn purple if they can't get what they want! 2009 is going to be the year I and many others like me rediscover our brains and read books instead of the diet of wall-to-wall reality tv and 'special editions' of old movies we're sure to get. As for breaking into the vaults and resurrecting the decaying corpses of scripts actually considered too weak for television (in the face of some of the dross that comes out of Hollywood already)... Well, that joke appears to have already written itself.

...I'm not entirely sold on the Caprica concept, but hey, I wasn't looking forward to BSG either.

The good news here is that the studios are getting desperate for new content. The article says specifically that NBC called Sci-Fi; so it's not just the little networks that are starting to hurt. My guess is that they're probably starting to auction off blocks of advertising space for next fall and, whoops, no one wants to buy commercial space on reruns. Good. I hope this hits the execs HARD. No one should have to work for nothing. And no, SkidMarkedUndies, it is NEVER illegal to strike.

"And no, SkidMarkedUndies, it is NEVER illegal to strike."

Wildcat Strike: An employee work stoppage that is not authorized by the labor union to which the employees belong. Since the passage in 1932 of the Norris-LaGuardia Act (29 U.S.C.A. § 101 et seq.), employees have had the right to strike for the purpose of demanding concessions from their employers. However, when employees go on strike without union authorization, their action is called a wildcat strike. Federal courts have held that wildcat strikes are illegal under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) of 1935 (29 U.S.C.A. § 151 et seq.), and employees may be discharged by their employers for participating in wildcat strikes.

So, they've got one script?

Remember the lesson of MAGNUM, PI...
by Big Dumb Ape
Jan 18th, 2008
12:20:08 PM
Someone above mentioned the LOST IN SPACE pilot which never aired...and there were things like the GLOBAL FREQUENCY pilot (based on the Warren Ellis comic) that starred Michelle Forbes that are in the can, too. So why not use the WGA strike as the perfect reason to air them and fill broadcast time?

Let's get real here -- every year Hollywood DOES finance and shoot assorted pilots that ultimately were killed by some stupid ass suit (who really has no fucking idea what makes for good or bad TV since he's too busy crunching numbers to save his high paying job) OR they are killed by a small limited focus test group who also have no real idea.

Seriously, if you already PAID for it...right up through filming the friggin' thing...why not use the strike as the reason to just test it with a wider audience?

Case in point: Anyone remember a small little show called MAGNUM PI? That lasted like 8 years and made Tom Selleck and international star and was a top 10 or top 20 show for years? CBS filmed the pilot and decided to SCRAP IT...again, some suit or focus group decided it wasn't very good...but then when Steven Speilberg and George Lucas came knocking to CBS and said "Well, if you're not going to do this series, we want to use Selleck now for this movie called RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK we're in pre-production on."

At which point someone who DIDN'T have their head up their ass completely said "Wait a minute. What do people like Speilberg and Lucas see that we don't? Maybe we SHOULD run this pilot after all."

And they did and the rest is history. Women swooned for Selleck and CBS had one of its best hits in ages.

So I say fucking show the LOST IN SPACE or GLOBAL FREQUENCY pilots or other things you have in the can since you really have nothing to lose right now...

Galactica, however, is one of the best shows to come along in years. PickedUp, you sound like a bitter douchebag, like those jackasses who piss and moan about how unfair it is that untalented cheaters play Guitar Hero but won't listen to their actual band they've worked so hard on. When was the last time you created anything as ground-breaking and enduring as Star Trek? That's what I thought. If you didn't talk out your ass your ideas wouldn't stink so bad.

I thought this was a stupid idea back in the days when I liked BSG. After the season 3 lack of direction, I'm about as interested in watching a show about a Caprica lawyer as I am in watching Flash Gordon. Hell, if they needed an idea, they had Journeyman in their stable. Surely that would rate as well as most of their crap. And I'm still waiting for Invisible Man on DVD you sci-fi fuckers. Hopefully this Howe guy won't follow Hammer's 'model of success.' Why don't they just start up a 'bad horror movie' channel, and leave sci-fi, sci-fi?
