There was a movie I saw on cable long ago that had a scene of a guy on a hospital bed in some basement, and a woman dressed as a nurse was sent in and started to have sex with him by riding him. Soon the guy starts to act as if he's waking up from something, brakes his restraints, and I think kills the woman! Some guy watching this says something like "He's ready". Anyone know what movie this is from?

********** STAR TREK TEASER **********
by PRESIDENT BALTAR
Jan 16th, 2008
11:51:41 AM
************************DESCRI PTION SPOILERS********************** ******* Slow Paramount logo. Bad Robot logo. Black, suddenly some sparks (very saturated [with] Michael Bay-looking cinematography). We hear an old NASA radio countdown: “30 seconds and counting.” Close up of a timeless guy with goggles leaning down doing some wielding and sparks flying around. He lifts his googles. Slightly futuristic head covering. It’s not a space suit, by the way. The dude leans down and wields some more. He’s standing on big metal. “From director J.J. Abrams” (blue font with a nice lens flare). Some Kennedy speech about space flight: “The eyes of the world now look to space.” People walking around the saucer section. The wielders are everywhere – showing size. We hear: “The eagle has landed.” Huge overhead shot pans across [and] suddenly [shows] what looks like miles of scaffolding underneath. Title: “The future begins”. Really impressive shot from … people all over the ship and you can see a huge industrialized city or shipyard in the background. It’s being built on Earth [rather than] in space. Neil Armstrong: “One small step for man…” Camera slowly cranes up over the whole saucer section. Then we hear Leonard Nimoy’s line: “Space. The final frontier…” and the familiar “Star Trek” theme horns. The shot continues [and reveals] the writing on the top of the saucer – “U.S.S. Enterprise” – and these huge aircraft-like warp engines in the background. Technically, the first reveal of what we’re seeing. Just the Starfleet logo (no title). Title card: “Under construction”. “Christmas 2008”

I can't remember if it was a review or not, but sometime last summer, Quint expressed some pretty critical and disappointed thoughts after seeing a cut of the film. I don't recall a lot of the specifics, but Quint felt pretty bad about saying what he did - like a parent telling his kid to give up on acting after seeing the school play.

The reason you haven't seen a post or talkback about Brad Renfro yet is because nobody has emailed the story to anyone on staff. Until that happens, the update wont take place.

And thats where this site needs to improve. They need to hire 'hounds' who scour for the news instead of just a pack of editors sitting back and waiting for news to finally reach them.

I'm guessing this is going to rate about the same as "The Host" to me. Just a nice feeling of "Allright...nice flick.....I have homework to do." That's a good thing.

Quint is right on with this. I saw it last night, its good, but the hyperbole of how it ranks with Aliens etc is a bit much to me. I will say I think you see plenty of the monster(s). Enough that you know what it is. You can skip the first 15-20 minutes of the movie as its the party and nothing happens. That got a bit long. But once..."it" arrives the movie becomes real fun. Lower your expectations a bit, but don't expect Uwe level crap either.

Some Caveats about Cloverfield (no Spoilers)
by v1
Jan 16th, 2008
03:06:19 PM
I posted this on another TB, figured I'd share the comment with the multiple Cloverfield threads...

After seeing Cloverfield, I thought I might throw some warnings your way. Things that may prevent someone from liking the movie. No spoilers in this comment... Take from it what you will.

Caveat 1) If you can’t handle “Shaky Cam,” this is probably not the movie for you.

Caveat 2) If you don’t like movies that have vague, open endings, where everything is not wrapped up in a tidy little package at the end of the day, this is probably not the movie for you.

Caveat 3) If you are incensed by the idea of any movie having footage and situations that are reminiscent of 9/11, this is probably not the movie for you.

Caveat 4) If you don’t like movies that kick ass, defy Hollywood conventions, reinvigorate genres, this is probably not the movie for you.

Caveat 5) If you don’t like movies that deliver true suspense, not edge of the seat suspense, I mean the kind of suspense that keeps you literally pushing away from the screen, trying to bury yourself into your seat because the suspense was so taut and ruthless, ala Alien, Jaws, etc, this may not be the movie for you.

This WAS the movie for me. I flat out Loved it.

Signs was not a first person camera thing but it was all about suspense and mood. You saw the alien for maybe 10 seconds all together until the last few minutes at the end. And that was awesome. Cloverfield looks great. I have high expectations but I know what I want to see...or not see. Monster Smash movies like Godzilla suck balls. Give me something that has suspense and is well thought out. Make it feel real.

When the whole Cloverfield Blitzkreig has been exploding since the fall of the Roman empire. With a trailer that makes you think that it may be that the biggest satan monster in the history of 9 dimensions would appear! The trailer lead us to believe it was going to turn into a massive monster mash! Not more of what we saw in trailer. The Host is the best monster movie so far. I'm dissapointed that its turned into BlairClover. What I will do though is watch it as a drama rather than what the trailers radiate.

Yeah, that's true, a genre director who has made some good films and had some good genre projects in the pipeline goes and kills someone and will in all likelihood be going to jail. about the jizzzin on jesus comment....lol i wish all the "shaky-cam" critics would get over it....it makes a film seem more realistic, especially in action films..gives u the feeling ur in the middle of the action instead of watching it, i never got nauseous. then again it seems theres a whole younger "Detail" obsessed generation that has to seeee everything...sit further back than the front row in the theatre and u will be fine....the other thing u people gotta get over is the PG-13 rating.... every movie cannot be rated R, even horror and sci fi or action movies.....the age of DVDs does not instantly mean there is a rated R version of every movie when it comes out on DVD, unless of course ur american pie, which seems senseless cuz all their movies are direct to DVD anyways....good review of CLOVERFIELD, i cant wait to see it

I will say this, Cloverfield will probably polarize people. It's innovative and suspenseful, but the use of the first person, shaky cam will alienate some. The fact that the movie does not have a Hollywood ending will alienate others. The fact that you don’t clearly see a whole lot of the beastie will alienate even more. The fact that there are some obvious 9/11 parallels with alienate some folks as well.

To me, Cloverfield was less of a movie and more of an experience, much like seeing Grindhouse in the theater. I think it was a bold move in terms of film making, and with a budget of (from what I understand) 30 Mil, I really think the risk will be well worth the long term pay off. I guess we'll see after this weekend is over.

Some other points... SPOILERS
by Fleet
Jan 16th, 2008
05:02:16 PM
...It's true, the shakey cam is REAL shakey cam at some points... the couple sitting next to me up and left (well, the girl ran out 20mins into the film, the guy sighed and went out after her and never came back) and my mate suffered what he called "a headache" (which is a word I heard thrown around a lot afterwards as we were walking out) At least in Blair Witch the guy held the camera steady more...... The monster IS great, but all this hype about it being absolutely incredible is just not so - Yeah, it's good, when you see it you think FUCK THATS ALRIGHT but then it kinda just settles down... then we have to deal with tears and family issues and tracking down the girlfriend... At one point I sat there thinking "Yep, this is the part that will get made into "Cloverfield The Ride" or "Cloverfield The Experience" in a theme park somewhere... I was ANGRY with the main guy's absolute die-hard need to rescue his "girlfriend" who dumped him not two hours before and went home with another guy... It fucked me off she called HIM for help when she treated him like a stuck up bitch beforehand... And like I said in the Harry-Review Talkback, it fucked me off that these "hipsters" handle it all with a wide-eyed shrug instead of going completely, absolutely fucking crazy/insane over the fact that family and friends are dying around them and there's a massive fucking MONSTER tearing down their city around them... It just seems like a bad day at the office for them..... Girls exploding, people dying and the guy goes "No, Im going to get my girlfriend" after running into government forces who should perhaps quarantine the group because of their contact with the smaller critters: "Okay" says the soldier "I'll show you the way out..." riiiiiiight, I think I moaned audibly in that scene... You simply don't end up caring about these characters... and the end - The VERY end - makes you want to punch the seat in front of you... because despite the fact that we've just say through a "monster" film, we're suddenly reminded that "love is a special gift" wah wah wah... Whatever. 6.5 out of 10.

I found I liked the experience as it happened but felt shorted when it was over, sort of like when you wait for a new attraction to open at a theme park and say ... eh, could've been better. The film definitely had its moments, but ultimately left the audience STONE COLD at the end. The only time I've heard a quieter exit from a theatre was at Passion of the Christ, and they were fucking traumatized. The effects were excellent but views of the monster were fleeting. Even Rob, who is being filmed by Hud during the army attack, was yelling "POINT THE CAMERA THAT WAY!"

Having seen the film myself and finding it to be pretty mediocre and disappointing, it'd be interesting to read Mori's analysis. The film's North American opening weekend will be good, but it's likely to have a minimum 50 % 2nd weekend drop off, from word of mouth. The film should've been marketed more strongly overseas, where it won't do as well, as the internet isn't enough.

What's that noise? Oh! Turn on the night vision! Yeah Why the hell weren't using that before? And why is it the guy filing doesn't know shit about the camera but someone else knows more and for some reason isn't filming? Oh and why the hell would he be waiting tape and ultra valuable battery life walking down an unlit tunnel. That's using the ol' noggin lovable Hud. What's that loveable hud? OK I went and drank a beer and calmed down. :) I know I'm being harsh from a 5 minute preview, but man... Couldn't they have just brainstormed in the trailer some better dialog than this? My initial objections to the silliness of the situation can successfully be explained away in the story, but it all just seemed awkward and the silly dialog probably ended up being more pronounced in my mind because of it: "oh man.. it's dark", ( walk in darkness for a long time ) "oh turn on the light on the camera.", "why thank you"... "what's that noise!?" "Turn on night vision!" Completely unnatural. Since I didn't get see any monster scenes I won't write this off completely, but I'm not impressed so far. For fun, reshoot this scene in your mind with the other characters and think of how easy it would have been to write better dialog: James Cameron's Marines from Aliens. or Jules and Vincent from Pulp Fiction or Walter, the Dude and Donnie from Lebowski, .. these aren't even the best examples, but there are countless other movies where the characters have excellent banter and flowing dialog. It just could have been done so much better. Dude: Are you sure this is the right way, man? Walter: OK stop, give it to me. Donnie: No, Walter. Dude: Hey, man give him back his property. Walter: Donnie -- the light, turn on the... Dude: Hey what the fuck is that, man! Walter: Those are vermin, Dude Dude: Fucking mice? Donnie: Rats, Dude. Donnie: Is there night vision on this, Dude? Walter: Just give me the fucking camera, Donnie! I kid of course, but if the whole movie is like the scene I saw, I am going to be hoping in in a Matinee :)

Exactly, BilboRing. And thanks for the review, Quint. Ever since the beginning of "Cloverfield"'s marketing launch and concept buzz, I've thought of "Signs" and how that one brief scene of the birthday party, when we first get to see the alien -- that's what this movie wishes it could do. I think it was brilliant how Joaquin's reaction was ours and in that brief clip, that was all the suspense rolled into one. I glimpse, a glimpse! at the unknown. That so seemed what "Cloverfield" wanted to capture, but a whole movie like that? Come on. I'm glad it's only "good" (probably even "OK," given the height of expectations). There was no way it could live up to that manufactured hype.

really this site should be fucking ashamed of itself. I just came out of a screening and there was audible giggling thru a lot of it. • The characters are plastic Hollywood style cyborgs..NOT particularly conducive to 'hyperreal' style psuedo doco material that clearly is attempting to tap into 9:11 fear. The female leads are particularly woeful but the guys : Mr Wonderful and his Ginger sidekick cameraman only BARELY scrape through sucessfully • If you're gonna get real, BE REAL..electricity that stays on in slumping buildings and cameras that keep working no matter what is fucking retarded bullshit. • Where are the fucking bodies in the street? HELLO? • Harry is a fucking moron disgrace. That is a fact. The film is not awful, but it's pretty darn weak - this should be (but of course won't be) the FINAL nail in the coffin of cheap ass scumbag shakey cam with CGI movies.

Thanks for writing this level headed review of what seems to be this year/last years most hyped movie. Regardless of all the reviews, I would still watch a movie and have my own opinion on it, but it's really cool when someone writes a constructive review instead of vomitting words as if they had just laid a supermodel.
I'm still waiting for Vern's review!!!

It doesn't live up to the hype. They clearly had a sequel in mind when they made this movie. At the end of the movie, I went "That's it?". It's a love story with the monster as a sideshow. Yes you get to see the monster, but it doesn't even touch on what the monster is, where did it come from, why is it attacking Manhattan, etc. I didn't go to see the movie just to see a monster being hit by missiles, but that's what the movie really is. Who gives a shit about the love story, I want the monster to be the star of the movie, not a bunch of yuppies with relationship problems. I have nothing against sequels but at least make the first movie a complete movie, and not just a jumping point for the real movie. And the camcorder style thing, was okay, it didn't bother me that much, but I prefer normal traditional camera style. A real disappointment. Not worth my 10 bucks. I hope the movie doesn't do well, so they won't have to make a lame sequel.
Good movie but Quint's right about expectations

Massa went nuts in his review, compared it favourably to Alien, Jaws and Blade Runner! That's laughable. This is a well done, low budget studio flick. Nothing more. The characters are typically paper thin and I challenge you to care what happens to any of them, bar maybe the funny cameraman. I far more enjoyed waiting for them to get picked off, which ultimately makes the idea of following these characters a bit of a failing. That said the film is not a failure. I always think JJ is better at ideas than execution. Alias, Lost, Mi3 liked the idea behind all of them, but the execution ultimately failed. Thankfully Matt Reeves is really the driving force behind this and despite barely credible characters, better suited to being in Transformers 2: Electric Boogaloo, he manages to pull off a genuinely tense and exciting 70 minute film. Fun yes, great no. Lower those expectations and empty your brain and just go in for a fun brief ride and you'll be rewarded. But Massa et al don't pretend the characters and dialogue in this are better written than your average cliched Hollywood summer blockbuster, because it just isn't true.

OK, let me get this straight... you loved Cloverfield, and Transformers is the best movie you've ever seen in your life? Right up there with the piles of shit that are Armageddon and Independence Day? Wow, I wanted to see the movie, until I read that. Do you think Micheal Bay is an misunderstood genius? I'll still check out Cloverfield, and hope for the best. I've always had my expectations at a reasonable level, so thanks to Quint for verifying what I already suspected. Sounds like a good, fun popcorn flick.

Just cause the film only has under 4 minutes of the monster in it doesn't mean it's void of any effects at all. I bet that there's effects galore in there but ones that are more in keeping with the story and drama. I say give it a chance and then, maybe, slag it of.

I agree with you pretty much through and through. I also had problems with the main character, and everyone's oddly model-esque looks, but dug the movie overall, especially the pacing in the first 2/3s, Giacchino's awesome one-track-er, and the fun monster bits! Abrams knows how to pick 'em, fo sho.

Who gives a crap about the exact time the monster is onscreen - Alien vs Predator had way more monster shots than the original Alien, that doesn't make it a good film. Godzilla USA had way more monster shots than Cloverfield - Cloverfield is 100x a better movie than Godzilla USA. It's not the best film ever, it's not the new Star Wars/Aliens/Lord of the Rings - It's more on a par with War of the Worlds, but better I think, and for a low(ish) budget giant monster film I had a fucking blast, will probably buy the DVD on release day and be there for the sequel.
