I've said it before, but if you are jonesing to remake a cool Bronson flick, do THE MECHANIC. And please, please see if you can get a "Sly" cut of Nighthawks out there. Love that movie, would love it even more I think if you could get that version out there you spoke of last year. Oh, and God bless you, you're the coolest.

Humble and self-depricating - I get cynical about Sly watching those thrash metal Rambo trailers, but his answers make me like the man again. And, great answer to the Rambo-Islamic question which many have been asking, and he's totally right, and movies about the current war have been tanking for precisely that reason.

Rambo...Full Circle?
by Acquanetta
Jan 14th, 2008
10:50:11 PM
I'm a little confused by the idea of Rambo coming full circle in the new film. Wasn't that the underlying theme of Rambo 3? I hope Sly expands upon that notion, either in a Q&A or in the actual Rambo film.

You should be the villain of the piece. I just rewatched Death Race 2000 on TCM the other night, you've got it in you. I caught the ad for Rambo earlier while watching TV with a friend, and we got to talking about your films. I never realized what a link there is between my childhood and Sylvester Stallone.
Death Wish 6
by Acquanetta
Jan 14th, 2008
10:54:30 PM
I'm a big fan of Bronson's take on the character, but I wouldn't be entirely opposed to seeing Sly's version. However, if it bears no relation to the original film or novel, why is it even being called Death Wish?

I must say I love Sly's reasoning for using the conflict in Burma as the new source material for RAMBO. The Karen tribe has been suffering for decades under the oppresive Burmese regime (which is basically communist). Just a brilliant decision by Sly both from a cinematic perspective (Rambo in the jungle again) and a humanitarian perspective (the suffering Karen) to finally shed some light on this long ignored genocide against the peaceful Karen. A million thanks, Sly! Good answer! Good answer! (I feel like Richard Dawson).

I think Rambo will fade into oblivion at the box office much like the "long awaited" comeback of Basic Instinct 2.

Which is a shame, because Sly has the potential for so much more. When he tried to "reinvent" himself years ago with Copland I thought that was a great step and was disappointed he didn't make more movies like that. Or, in today's market, find a great drama on HBO or FX to sink his teeth into. Sly's days of being a marquee draw at the cinema are over, but if he stopped with this Rocky 7 and Rambo 4 bullshit he could really continue as an actor.

Thanks for answering my question, Sly!

-tell him that "In the middle of this film Trautman will emerge in a flashback" is a pretty awful idea. I know Rambo isn't supposed to be Full Metal Jacket or The Big Red One, but that doesn't mean it's got to completely take you out of the real world altogether.

Flashbacks- especially to dead characters- are 9 times out of 10 a shitty, hamfisted writers' device. Maybe it's a sign of how stuck on the past Rambo is, or how unstrung he is, but that doesn't change the fact that it's weak, Lifetime Movie-style writing.

Anyway, hoping this'll be good, and POST A PICTURE OF CELESTE!

Stallone got a lot of respect from me for Rocky Balboa, a thoughtful, classy, mature movie, almost a direct sequel to the original. Fingers crossed for this one. And to those dissing the Crenna flashback: Just imagine Rambo sitting thinking about what he should do, having second thoughts about his mission and whether he can do it or not...then the Crenna flashback comes on and Rambo realises what he HAS to do and the Jerry Goldsmith music comes crashing in!!!!! Awesome! To the guy doing the score for this film - if you screw up the Goldsmith music you'll be on the hit list buddy.

but there's no way Stallone wrote "where I could play identical twins that are artistically challenged and in a final display of manic behavior they cannibalize one another in front of Cobra."

just not possible. funny, well-written, cohesive, and with no errors. no way a weightlifting "actor" wrote it, no matter how many iconic roles you guys can throw at me. he's a fun guy (a republican, but whatever), and it's cool that "he's" doing this, but an assistant or publicist wrote that sentence.

...totally underrated!! Sure, it 'aint going to stop world hunger, but it was a laugh! I said it before and I will say it again, if Stallone was a bad actor, Rocky and Rambo would have had zero impact on the world. It was him, and him alone, that made these movies what they were (credit of course due to the stunt guys)...but could you imagine Tom Cruise as Rambo? No...nor could I. Stallone rules. Simple. In his genre, he was king. And in my eyes, still is...plus he is an awesome director...maybe he should have made superman returns...the guy knows action, and would have made something monumental, as compared to that Duck's puke that Singer made....

most of the world hates America for 2 reasons:

1) Being fatter, more arrogant, louder and more stupid than the rest (a sweeping generalisation, but it's a pretty common one)

2)Being the dominant power on the planet.

Foriegn policy (sepecially shit like vietnam) is mostly irrelevant in our percerption.

BTW I like Americans, places in America that I've been to (except for San Fransisco- which I hated), and most things american so I post this expecting to be flamed.

Stallone has proven himself with the American masterpiece that is Rocky Balboa. I never truly lost faith in the man--Lock up is a great movie, eg. But bringing back Rambo was necessary. When the only true action star we have is a 25 ft. robot named Prime, it's time for a real action hero. John's return is prime, itself. I think Stallone is JUST starting his creative peak...so what if he's older when it happens? Look at Eastwood--he's producing his best work yet. I would like too see Sly direct more films for other people, personally. Thanks for being the best, Mr. Stallone.

I like the music Frank gave to the Rocky series, especially "Take You Back." Heck, I even like that "Far From Over" song he did in Stayin' Alive. The "Pushin'" tune is catchy, and while it is a bit schmaltzy, I think part of that was intentional, because it was used during Rocky's cheezy hotel-training sequence, and it was meant to be portrayed that Rocky was approaching that first Clubber fight in a none-too-serious a frame of mind, and sure enough Clubber hands him his ass

Did Rambo knit that headband, or did he get it at the store where Rush drummer Neil Peart gets his hats? FMBay asked how Sly put on 47 pounds. Simple: he got older. For a majority of men, aging changes the metabolism and your body frame just becomes wider - not neccessarily 'fatter', but you take on more of a stocky frame - your neck gets thicker, your pelvis gets larger, etc.

I don't think Sly looks the "same" as Rambo III in '88, but shit yeah he looks great for a guy at 60. Even without the insane physique, he's a picture of good health. Whereas most of the 60 year old guys I work with are grizzled, grey, and look every year of it. My dad, for example, is encroaching 60, and while he's a handsome enough guy, he looks 60. If not more. Maybe Sly drinks the blood of infants. He mentioned putting on some 45 pounds, which is understandable after 20 years and getting older, but he's built like a mountain. His upper body is like, I dunno, a pickup truck.

Directed by Uwe Boll. Just kidding. But a Sly/Arnold Contra movie should exist in history, shouldn't it? Both still have possibly long long careers ahead of them, but I want to see them together in action hero versions.

It's like the new Jackie Chan/Jet Li movie. We finally get to see them together (at a young enough age), though the movie itself is questionable.

...why the free pass on the HGH or roids he got popped with Down Under? It gets me to thinking about the hypocrisy of the whole HGH/sterios thing. Here we are savaging athletes because we don't want our kids to take short cuts and it's "unfair" competition for those they compete against. What about celebrities? Don't they have an influence too? Isn't your body shape a part of making a living for many roles in Hollywood? Wouldn't that keep an older guy in action roles longer than someone else thereby giving him an unfair advantage? Of course, I have no proof but at age 60 and his height to be putting on the amount of weight in muscle does not seem natural. I was a football player up through college and briefly used roids to bulk up a lanky frame. They work...real well. I have also seen HGH proposed as a medical treatment to counter aging. Rambling a bit here, but I guess my ultimate point is why do entertainers and actors get a pass on performance enhancing drugs vs. athletes? Aren't they illegal for both? Maybe that's changing though... http://tinyurl.com/ytp76v

And didn't he say something about Stone being a little uptight about it--not in a nervous way, but in a bitchy way? I dunno. I'd have rammed the bone home in the name of good cinema.

Not sure where Sly's trying to go with Death Wish but I'm worried it sounds a bit like he's going slightly down the "generic" route. It's not the physical makeup so much as the atmosphere of the scene, the motivations of the characters, the manifestation of the emotions of all the actors (killer, victims, bystanders), the means and methods of the violent acts, the camera, editing, lighting, music etc that illicit the particular emotional response from the audience. Personally I'd hope for a creepy suspense thriller vs Rambo in the urban jungle.

When the new Rambo movie was first announced, people DID suppose the Rambo movie storyline would involve Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. I liked Sly's answer about not wanting to insult the troops who are over there fighting by having Rambo single-handedly capture or kill Osama. Who knows? Maybe in a few years when we're all speaking Arabic or Farsi, Rambo can get back in action to take on real evil - Hollywood. Or white rappers. Either way.

Couldn't Possibly Disagree More With Ken Miyamoto
by LaserPants
Jan 15th, 2008
03:44:52 PM
Ken sez: "We love action and violence, but the reason Rambo has such a following is because his character has depth (many moments in First Blood, boat scene and ending of Part 2, village scenes in Part 3)."

Ummm, no, not really. The reason why we love Rambo is because its fun to watch a supersoldier guy kick the shit out of people. Thats it. Since when is Rambo a character with depth? Since when was the dialogue anything less than totally hilariously bad? (That is to say "so bad its good", nay, "so bad its AWESOME!") Whoever "Ken" is, he is clearly either a studio shill, or deeply out of touch with what people like about Rambo -- killing, mayhem, and ludicrous feats of strength. I mean, I love Rambo too, but its for the mayhem and insanity, not for the "depth." If I want depth from a movie about a Vietnam vet gone caacaa cuckoo crayzay, I'll watch APOCALYPSE NOW and thrill to scenes such as Martin Sheen having a nervous breakdown, or Marlon Brando waxing psycho-rhapsodic about "piles of tiny limbs."

If what you say was true, as far as fans just loving a super soldier just going around kicking the shit out of people then all of those 80s and 90s action hero clones/rip offs would have the same following and the same iconic status as Rambo.

The original First Blood showcased a lot of depth for Rambo's character. While the second and third flicks didn't showcase as much, there's still moments in there. A far cry from the many rip offs one can see in numerous B movie flicks. Heck, Van Peebles' SOLO of the 90s would be a classic. .. God forbid (although it can be a guilty pleasure).

I'm not saying that Rambo has the depth of Deer Hunter or Apoc Now, of course not. But there's more to Rambo than those other action clones.

First Blood certainly had depth...

Moto, Did Any Of Those Clones Have Stallone's Starpower Or Appea
by LaserPants
Jan 15th, 2008
04:21:20 PM
Nope. Peebles isn't a big name star; Stallone is, and was at the time of FIRST BLOOD's opening, hence the popularity of watching him kick ass without bothering to take names. People like the guy cause he's cool and he's got the charisma to pull it off. Schwarzeneggar (sp?) is (was) the same deal. Your kidding yourself if you think the number one reason Rambo was so popular is the depth of the character. Unless, of course, by "depth of character" you mean how deep he plunges his survival knife into some guys chest.
