I was extremely disappointed by the last book, which could've been re-titled "Harry and his Friends go Camping." If they didn't need two movies to adapt "Goblet of Fire" from text to screen, I see no reason to do this for "Deathly Hallows."

the last movie sucked didnt it? Just sloppy phonin' it in crap, yah? Am I the only one that thinks so? I think they're all sick of making HP movies. Also the books get worse as it goes along after 4 so I dont expect much from them. If they do do Deathly Hallows as two movies that would be great though. Only book that makes sense in two parts
by Chifoilisk

09:01:34 PM
There were other books in the series that were longer and more complicated, but they all had a natural beginning and ending - starting during the summer holiday, ending at exams. The last one can easily be split in two (the best point to split it would be when Ron comes back). And it is a cash cow, but let's be honest, potter fans would pay ten times the amount of one extra ticket to see another movie. They'll do it gleefully, and I don't see how anyone loses. If you think the movies and books suck don't watch or read them.

Azkaban is stilly my favourite. For me it made the biggest stylisitc leap of the entire series, and as a result was the most refreshing. Nothing like those before, and copied by those since. I like the idea of two episodes for the final movie. The text and the fans deserve the extra detail. Just a little bit worried about who gets the directors chair on the final one. Has it been officially announced yet? It needs to be someone with experience in big budget FX movies, with big stylistic balls and a sense for truly epic cinema.

buckarez hit the nail on the head, i thought the last book was so clearly rowling phoning it in from her giant mansion in scotland and hoping everybody would finally leave her alone once she finished it all up with that tacky epilogue. camping, whining, and a bit of action. i barely remember what the hell happened, actually. bring cuaron back and he will make it tight, dark, beautiful, and under 2 hours long, and that's all anybody should ask for.

by EjkoUSC

09:11:39 PM
Its called editing people. Yeah DH was a great book and all but how many chapters do we need of Harry sitting around in a tent twiddling his thumbs not knowing what to do while Ron and Hermione sip tea. Just because it was a long book doesn't mean that everything in the book is all that important. Seriously. I read the book and there are lots of ways to skim the fat. I think it will and should be the LONGEST film but it is totally unneccesarry to make it into two films. What then? Each film then winds up being a relatively short film and everyone complains that each half isn't epic enough. Or you make two 3 hour movies? Sorry but DH is not a 6 hour movie. The series is already starting to suffer a little from franchise fatigue, last thing they need is to draw it out any longer. Wrap it up. And stop twiddling your thumbs Harry.
They'd better film all the movies really soon or recast them

And as you stated, as long as it's like the Matrix. Back to back. I (grown man) really liked the books and movies. Especially the way they progressed from innocence to darkness. I still have absolutely no idea why the author threw in the Gay angle to Dumbledork. I was like wha? Did she throw it in there to make a gay friend of hers happy? I just don't get it. i like the idea of two movies and your idea of releasing them within a few months. my favorite movie, so far is the most recent. i think it is the only one that has captured the atmosphere and feel of the books. not all directors want to replicate books, and from a creative perspective, I understand, but when you have a built in audience like the potter books bring, it seems a good idea to try to satisfy the fans at least a little.

So far anyway. It had great directing, great editing, wonderful soundtrack, but most importantly. A fascinating story. That kept me riveted to my seat and almost moved me to tears. 09:31:27 PM
When will people realize that Deathly Hallows simply does not have enough of a plot to satisfy two films? Fans make it out to be some fantastic novel that ties up every loose end and ties back into all the other six books. No...what does tie back is contrived, and things we thought we knew are suddenly changed by Rowling in order to fit her plot. Two-third of the book is just the trio talking about what they're going to do before they actually do it, bickering about having no plan, and sitting in the woods. What the sixth book sets up is not what takes up the majority of this book. Harry saves the day by a cheap device (an all-powerful wand) and his choice only keeps him alive (it doesn't defeat Voldemort).

I don't really see where you're coming from with your criticism of Deathly Hallows. I am re-reading it and find it to be very satisfying.

[SPOILER]I am not sure if we read the same book, but the way I recall Harry saving the day was by sacrificing himself thus casting the same sort of spell on everyone Voldemort would try to harm as his mother did for him.

And, because I obviously missed them, where were the continuity changes that you spoke of? What about the Potterverse did J.K. change to fit her plot?

They tried to do this on the fourth movie until Alfonso Cuaron, I believe, convinced them it was a horrible idea. You can't just construct a climax out of the middle of the book; the arc will be all wrong. Plus, 7 books and 8 movies just feels wrong - and everyone will take it as a transparent attempt to make more money. Plus it will just make all the principal actors a year older. Man there are so many reasons this is a terrible idea.

Instead we get these truncated messes. And Azkaban was the most truncated of them all. Instead of having two movies, why don't they use Order o/t Phoenix as a template and make the entire movie one big montage scene? That way it'll be only 45 minutes long and they can pack the theaters all day making Warner Brothers even more money! Comparing the Films, and What I'd Like To See in the Future
by zooch
Jan 13th, 2008
10:29:15 PM
People say Azkaban is the best because it is the best directed. However, Harry Potter purists prefer the more faithful first film. The beginning of Philosopher’s Stone is perfect, and Richard Harris IS the one and only true Dumbledore performance. Never been a fan of Michael Gambon’s at all.

However, I think Cuaron did a great job with Azkaban, and would welcome his return. The time traveling climax in that film was perfectly set up and beautifully crafted, one of the high points in the series. That scene beats the hell out of the poorly conceived, tension-less, special effects driven action scenes that are in GoF and OoTP. Never once did I feel the characters were in any real danger. I'm sure since we are getting the same director for HBP as OoTP, than they will surely blow that book's brilliant climax as well.

I would like to see them pull a Peter Jackson for Deathly Hallows and make that last stand off at Hogwarts chapter in the book into an epic battle in the scale of the end battle in Return of King. Now that would in awesome!

that captured the magic of the books. It was almost scene for scene -- eye opening. GOF really disappointed me, and it's still my favorite of the books. Yer right, GOF should have been the most dangerous of all the movies, but then it just petered out a the end. Maybe because they raped the story so thin that the last challenge was "don't get bushwhacked".

I've diligently watched all the Harry Potter movies for the sake of keeping up with all things fantasy, but I just can't help but wince a lot. It's a nice setting, a few nice ideas, but to me the stories have never really risen above the B-fantasy threshold. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think that if it wasn't for the "brand name", they'd just quietly vanish into the bargain bin. If they do it in two movies, I hope they can find two distinct stories to tell - I think I'm going to swear off going to see any more movies that end with what amounts to a "to be continued".

Since the books have been around since the fifties and are classics in literature. They got even more popular when the movies came out. The films, won a ton of awards and grossed billions of dollars. People still dress up like Lord of the Rings. Go to conventions. That's never going to stop. Harry Potter is definently a phenomenon, I'm sure it will be revered, but Lord of the Rings it is not.

I do NOT know where they could logically divide this thing. Most of the middle of the book is the Potter kids wandering around the outskirts not knowing what the hell to do. Seems like a bad place to end one movie and start a second.

No, I'm pretty sure they could knock Deathly Hallows out in one 3 hour picture.

There is no reason to make Deathly Hallows into 2 movies....at all. Where the hell would they split it up?? DH is not even the longest book...GoF and OotP were much longer and could have logically been split up. Deathly Hallows can easily be a 3 hour movie...if they slpit it up than I just don't think I will be bothered to see it. DH was limited on plot and dragged in the middle with constant whining and stupidity, it only gets good towards the end but the final battle with Voldemort is such a letdown. They would have to expand that fight greatly. The best movie so far has been Prisoner of Azkaban so it would be great ro see Cuaron back.

Might not be for another 20-30 years. But it will happen. They made the current films way too early, before the whole scope of the story was fully in focus. That's why a lot of seemingly-innocuous stuff - that later turned out to be MAJORLY important - got cut out of most of the current movies along the way. They were even going to exclude Kreacher from the OOTP movie until Rowling herself intervened. Not knocking the existing movies at all: I like them a lot, they're beautiful pieces of work. But so far as being a faithful adaptation of Rowling's story, watching them has been like a study in chaos theory: tiny differences become magnified over the long run until they threaten to wreck the whole thing.

I'm a massive Potter fan, but this is plain ridiculous. There's barely enough material in the last two books to make a movie, so this is pure insanity. Mind you, if they can make a decent movie out of Half Blood Prince then they can do pretty much anything... There's story in both books, but there's not a great deal of it.

The adaptation of Order of the Phoenix was a bastardization of the book. That what would have happened to Lord of the Rings if it had been condensed to one film. But unlike Lord of the Rings the Potter films have awful lead actors and Gambon's Dumbledore is the coldest motherfucker in the films. In the books he's the calm in the middle of the storm but in the movies he has the ability to be just another cow caught in a tornado.

Yes, Deathly Hallows is long and complex but no more so than any of the books since Goblet of Fire. In fact, it's less complex overall than the Half Blood Prince (the only book i think would deserve the two-Act treatment). Like the Hobbit, it's hard to see how they can do justice to the story by splitting it in two.

Great idea both $'ally and storytelling-wise, to make 2 films. So they don't need to condense and cut as much-as long as they get a gifted storytelling director. Cuaron would certainly be my choice. Even when reading the book, I was thinking to myself there was no way this thing would fit into one movie. Perhaps with a split around the Malfoy Manor part. Hallows is like The Hobbit, in that there is just a TON of action all through it, almost every chapter has action. Also, the end section is 'odd' enough that it needs a proper pace to be effective (the train station, etc.), and that wouldn't happen in a 4-hour movie. The first Hallows film could be about the action, and the second more about the deep themes that become prevalent (life and death and their meaning, and how one has to accept death will happen to live properly, etc.). Hobbit, now that I've just reread it, also makes sense as two films: just split it when they reach Mirkwood and Gandalf leaves the party.

I'm also curious though on what del Toro could do with the Potter universe. Should be interesting.

I understand Jackson Hackson wants to include material not originally in The Hobbit but taken from other Tolkien writings. But i like your idea, if i understand correctly, of sticking completely to the book and include every little detail in the filmed version, and making it two parts unadulterated and complete Hobbit. Then they could later make another film of all the other writings if needed. Just hope they get a more gifted director than Jackson and that he sticks to producing this.

While I have always been a huge Spielberg fan, I also don’t think he should do this. Nor do I think he will do this. He already has a very full schedule for the next few years anyway (Lincoln, Trial of the Chicago Seven). If he was going to do HP, he would have jumped on it in the beginning.

However, I’m surprised that a lot of the HP fans writing in this thread don’t want to see a 2 part finale to the series. It would give the whole series the proper ending that it deserves. All the details that people complained were left out of EVERY HP film since the beginning could be left in. With a 5hr total running time, it will be epic.

Remember – when it’s over – ITS OVER! There will be no more HP to go through. It will be 20 years or so before the next incarnation of Harry Potter incarnation is brought to our screens, so if they want to give us more, I’m totally for that.

The chances are good that this would be a Summer 2010 release for a first half, and a Christmas 2010 release for the second half. Yeah, it might mean more money for WB and everone involved, but it also means we get what we’ve been asking for all along – a truly faithful adaptation of a Harry Potter book.

I say bring back Cauron and let him go crazy.

And for everyone writing about how they "hate" Harry Potter - you don't have to read them, or watch them. If you didn't have this to complain about, you'd find something else. Not every series is for everyone, but why put so much energy into hating something? Does that make you cool or something? Let the name calling begin...

My ex-girlfriend read them all and used to drag me to see the movies with her.

Parts 1 and 2 bored me to death, but Part 3 was really fucking well done. I was into the story, the time travel shit was cool, and I liked the films climax. Part 4 was decent, and I liked how someone actually died and it was serious.

And by the time Part 5 rolled around, I didn't see it because we broke up. So I don't think I will be seeing the rest of the series, but I don't understand the need for 3 hour movies or two part movies with the same story. It's lame

Pirates: At Worlds End was boring, stupid, and unnecessary and I never finished the whole movie because I fell asleep and walked out during the part a boat was flipping over. So I vote no to movies filmed in 2 parts. Make one fucking concise, edited film.

And LOTR will not replace Star Wars. I am a fan of neither, but I think Star Wars will always be the HBIC of Fantasy/Sci Fi Films. There will never be nothing like the original trilogy. And the replay value for the original films is high. LOTR is good to watch once in the theater. Anything after that you either have the patience of a fucking saint, have a lot of time on your hands, or are a huge fucking dork. Those movies are way to fucking long.

Financially, in terms of telling the story and tying up loose ends, etc. Might make sense for the Half-Blood prince, too. It's the end of the series, there's lots of story in the books that doesn't end up on the screen, and lots of threads touched on in earlier movies that never quite made it back into the later movies . . . I'm cool with it.

Just like Stephen King's 1,000-page bricks, J.K. Rowling's HP novels (especially the last four) need to have 25-30% cut out of them. That's why ORDER OF THE PHOENIX was such a good film, because instead of making an almost three-hour flick, they cut out Rowling's padding and made a tight, entertaining movie.

Plot roughly represents 1 year at school, boring growing up subtext using wooden minor characters, Harry learns a new skill, toss in a bit of Quidditch, Harry faces off end of level monster, film ends, kids wait for new film, adults wonder why they just wasted 30 quid at the cinema, producers jump for joy at license to print money for some old tat.

Hey, this far down the comments list, you do what you can to get attention. :)

Seriously, though, I think this is a great idea. The one thing that's underwhelmed me about all the films after the first one is how they've felt kind of rushed. The last two, especially, as much as they nailed it in most ways, felt like a breathless run through the plot points.

There are so many good moments in the last book that if two films will allow those moments to be given proper space and breathe a bit, then I'll be happy.

And, coming so long after the last book was released, it will give a nice ROTK "event" feeling to things.

And really, what's to complain about? It's an extra Harry Potter movie, for chrissakes! With all the garbage that Hollywood continues to dump on us, another good film, especially a fantasy, is a good thing, period.

Director: splitting duties between Cuaron and Del Toro would be great, as they're friends to boot. The last book is a mix of intense action and quietly surreal, haunting moments, and I bet those guys could really pull it off.

No, that was a keyboard error, not a swipe at Cuaron. :) In some ways, Azkaban was the most aggravating of all the films for me, because it left out some of the most special aspects of the book (the patronus backstory!). But at the same time, he created this wonderful, rich atmosphere and look that gave the whole thing a misty storybook quality. And yet somehow, he managed to make the characters all feel more real and alive without violating that storybook feel--an amazing, subtle balance. As compelling as the vivid/gritty/modern-realism vibe has been in the last two films, Cuaron seems to have stylistically captured what made the books so cherished in the first place. On that criteria, I'd rank his and the first film highest.

Yates did a great job on Order of the Phoenix, but seeing as they are concentrating on the comic aspects of Half Blood Prince, I do think that it would have been great to go back to Mike Newell, who nailed lots of humour in Goblet (certainly the Yule Ball and buildup got big laughs in the London cinema where I saw it). Then have Cuaron for Deathly Hallows. Oh, by the way, two films is a bad idea. One film, lasting up to 3 hours, is a quite long enough. If David Lean can get Great Expectations down to under 2 hours, I'm sure Warners can get Deathly Hallows down to under 3.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. The first two movies did a great job of setting up the world of HP, but are almost painfully unwatchable in repeat viewings. Cauron took the most concise and well written book of the series and made it into a great movie. I don't think anyone could have pulled off the time travel climax as well as he did. Give him a shot with DH and we will get a great ending to the movie series, which needs to be thought of as entirely different than the books.

"Matthew for the next and Kenneth the last two."

Yates is currenly directing HBP and the is just Deathly Hallows after that.

Perhaps like me you'd like to see them redo GOF and see if they git it right. The cemetery scene was angel pussy but I had a lot of issues with the rest of the film. Maybe that one should have been made much longer or split in two.

doesn't mean that the story needs wrapping up, but you need to feel that you have at least gone on some kind of journey. that's why the endings of Two Towers and Order of Phoenix weren't too great. You just felt that things weren't that different from the status at the end of the previous films (Fellowship; Goblet).

Okay, the last book was good in BOOK form. However, I really do not want to see 2 hours of Harry, Ron, and Hermione arguing and wandering around in the forest which pretty much is a third of the book. And talk about squeezing every last dollar they can. C'mon, 7 books, 7 movies. The inconsistancy would kill me!

Order of the Phoenix is in a few ways the worst movie of the series (which is sad because it's a great book, albeit too long for ADHD people to read) this is because the adaptation sucked. Surely it was partly down to the new screenwriter Michael Goldenberg (or whatever his name is) who replaced Steve Kloves to give Kloves a break for one film. They tried to include too much from the book. We're talking a 900 page book crammed into 2 hours (the shortest Potter flick...makes a whole lotta sense for the LONGEST book, don't it...??). Order of the Phoenix could have been an epic masterpiece in the right hands. Hopefully Deathly Hallows will at last be the movie the series has deserved all along. Prisoner of Azkaban came closest. It's not a coincidence it was the fucking genius Alfonso Cuaron in the chair for that one. He set out to make a MOVIE, not just another episode in a franchise, which is what Order felt like. John Williams's score (absent from the last 2 flicks) really helps too. GET HIM BACK. GET CUARON BACK OR LET DEL TORO DIRECT, HE'S EXPRESSED INTEREST. DO TWO 2-HOUR FLICKS.

The screenwriters/producers have cut so much of the backstories and so much of the peripheral stories out in the last three films that they need not make two movies. Essentially the last film will be the trio hunting for horcruxes and the smackdown at the end. Remember the HBP and the DH will not be adaptations of JK's books per se, but sequels to the OOTP movie. The Daily Mail is not renowned for accuracy either, especially when it comes to entertainment news. If there is a semblance of truth in the rumour, it is because Warner Bros. are jumping on The Hobbit annoucement to get some word of mouth PR going on Harry Potter- the next film is out in 11 months and with the books finished and even a lot of non readers knowing how it ends they want the cash cow to milk, milk, milk. This is the biggest film franchaise ever, but Warner Bros still want HBP and DH to make between $750-$800 million worldwide each to really stick two fingers up at other sci-fi/fantasy franchises out there. Especially since The Golden Compass, The Dark is Rising, Beowoulf and Eragorn have all been DOA at the box office and with critics. If am wrong you can HEX me, either way let us hope the next two films will be entertaining. The HP movie series has not been perfect, but all of the films have been well crafted popcorn fantasy movies with some good moments of action, wonder, drama, humour etc.

I thought Goblet of Fire was a WAAAAY worse adaptation than Order of the Phoenix. The Goblet of Fire book blew me away when I first read it but the movie paled in comparison. It was still entertaining as just a movie and so was the movie version of Order of the Phoenix though even though they left stuff out. Hopefully now with two movies they can include everything and fans will stop moaning about it.

First off, I dont get all the love for PoA. I like me some Cuaron but the 3rd entry is over fucking rated already. I dont know but it didnt do it for me. Loved the book, but I know a lot of die hard HP fans who didnt care for it either, and since the mess that was Goblet I've really lost interest in the HP movies. They just get worse. Hope the next outings right the ship but I doubt it. It doesnt matter anyhow, even if theyre total shit people will still turn out to see it just b/c its HP. However, I honestly believe the answer is Del Toro. He'd knock Potter out of the park.

Its the only way to do the saga of Harry Potter justice. Same thing with the Hobbit. I can't believe they're only making TWO movies of the Hobbit! There should be at the very least 639, 987, 232 movies made of the Hobbit. Furthermore, each of those movies should be at least 6 or 7 thousand hours long. Anything less is a travesty.

You know if Cuaron or Newell never directed 3 and 4, it would never have occured to any of you to clamor for Cuaron (or Newell) to direct a Potter movie. That said, I think Richard Curtis (Love Actually) would be a good choice. A little surprising on the surface but not really. He knows how to handle a lot of stories, is good with character, knows how to tell big supercharged narratives and I think he'd do a good job with it. And not that it means much but he did conduct the interviews on the POA dvd with the cast so he has some association with the series already. and he has worked already with much of the cast.
Forgotten things throughout the series don't matter in the end..

Perhaps the sight of the locket at Grimmauld Place and the Lily/Snape encounter are the only truly important things that needed foreshadowing so far. Without them, it would seemed contrived. But everything else doesn't matter anyway, because they already seem contrived. Rowling likes to leave "relevant" information about her world until the last book...Oh, there are no such things as REAL invisibility cloaks? ok..., If the children's fairy tales are so famous, why haven't we heard of them?...Harry's read Quidditch Through the Ages many times and he can't remember that a snitch has a flesh memory?...if the Elder Wand is so easily traced throughout history, then why has no one ever mentioned it or why hasn't Harry heard Professor Binns talk about it? So much of DH is last-minute stuff; if not, Rowling is a bad plotter. She completely passes by more pleasing connections among elements of her book, and she made horrendous mountains out of molehills for countless plotlines. She is more than often marvelous at casting stones on the ground, but in the end of the series she fails in the gathering.

Since they've already ensured that certian parts of the book will be cut by leaving some characters out of the films this one should be easy to condense down to 2 1/2 hours. Besides if they do it as 2 movies the first one would be a two hour camping trip with very little happening.

TOTALLY Rowling Is Going To Write More Potter Books
by LaserPants
Jan 14th, 2008
05:01:24 PM
Heres the trajectory: She's gonna write a new book and its going to bomb. Her publisher will then put the pressure on to write more Potter books. The fans will be begging for more Potter books. Rowling will need to continue to facilitate her now extravagant lifestyle (aka make more money), and will suddenly do a 180 and say that "oh, there are actually a whole bunch of new Potter stories I always wanted to tell and here they are!" Either that or she'll sell the rights to the publisher and they'll start cranking out Harry Potter EU type books similar to the Star Wars novels. I'd be willing to bet money on it.
They could do it in one....

.... just have Harry & Dumbledore find Slythrin's Locket in the Cave. Look at it this way: suppose that Rowling had omitted the whole R.A.B. bit. The only difference would have been that the camping trip would have started a few chapters earlier, and the book would have been a bit shorter than it was. Harry was no closer to the next Horcrux nor to understanding the Hallows as a result of the whole "sneak in to the MInistry" bit, and he was going to have to leave Grimmauld Place to hunt for the Sword and the last two Horcruxes anyway.

Everybody was so happy about the last book's arrival that they failed to notice what a mess it was. I think the way to salvage it into a good movie is to condense it, make it more concise, weedle out the chaff, like they did with the fifth movie. Making two separate movies would drag it out unnecessarily, methinks.
