Heard a lot of good things about this film (along with [REC]), so hopefully we won't have to wait too long to see it.

amazing performance, you can really see her inner emmotional guts... however, I wouldn't mind her losing the Goya (she already has one, for The Sea Inside) in front of the overdue Maribel Verdú (how long are they going to make her wait?)
Really want to see this

Anyone know if it's been released in Spain yet? I recently met a sexy Spanish lady and want to impress her by taking her to see this. I love being an expat!

I'm expecting Best Actress noms for Atonement, Juno, The Savages.. but who knows, maybe some dark horse picks like Belen Rueda or Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days) will slip past the goalie.

Nice to see an interview of an intelligent actress. Icing in the cake is that she is foreign.

Just saw the Orphanage in the theatres last night. I'd say it's definitely more a thriller and a tragedy than a horror flick. None of the scares are truly malevolent.

Belen Rueda's performance is fucking astounding , beyond words. This is really a character movie and her shoulders have to carry most of the film's moments. From big scares, to small emotional moments. She conveys them all perfectly. It's been a long time since I've seen a so called "scary movie" that actually was touching and quite sad as well.

Oh and...

Her performance is definitely better than anything any U.S. actress will bring to the Oscars this year, by far.

what to make of this movie. I like Guillermo. I trust him. And maybe I'm just too cynical but it looks like every other horror movie. Weird shit happens. Sexy, attractive woman investigates (like an idiot). It's like this never-ending structure in horror movies. It's just the same thing over and over again... Does anybody out there agree with me or am I talking out of my arse???
OVERRATED! OVERRATED!

First off, I think Guillermo Del Toro is not quite as amazing as everyone else on this site thinks that he is. And this J.A. Bayona guy, well he is not quite as amazing as Del Toro. Put it this way, if "The Orphanage" was filmed in the English langauge, it's title would have been "Skeleton Key" or "Dark Water." It has some scares but it is excessively mediocre AT BEST, and BY NO MEANS OSCAR WORTHY.
don't listen to steve trevor for he is wrong.

its a great great film and has a lot more going for it than just being scary. it certainly is miles better then the two films he compared it too. its a great film that will scare the shit out of you and if you have a heart break it at the same time.

But then I would be lying. It didn't go into any new territory within the genre which was one of its biggest problems. There were fresh ideas but they lacked impact and were overwhelmed by what was overall a cliched execution of the tired "dead/ghost children" sub-genre. It was technically polished in most respects but it left me bored and wishing I hadn't invested the time.

So I take it you've seen this movie, Capone, and that your review of it is that it is "magnificent?"

This is why 'set visits' only serve to castrate this site - you're obligated to do things like throw the word "magnificent" around at movies that nobody has watched.

I've heard good things about this...

I'll probably end up renting it down the road, though I'm hoping it's not like what ewokstew wrote.
It's scares are overrated but it is still very good

Anyone who doesn't like this movie at all, just doesn't get it. It may not be anywhere near as terrifying as Richard Corlis would like you to believe, but it is extremely well put together for what it is. I am sick to death of the little kid ghost sub-genre and the fact that this movie was still able to hold my interest is a testament to its thematic layers and nuanced character relationships. I have seen it twice now and while the second viewing retained none of the suspense, the complexity of the drama really shined. Don't go in expecting a fast paced rock em sock em horror flick. It is a mildly suspenseful, moody supernatural thriller/drama with a good deal of humanity at its core. Not great, but very good.
it's a good movie, but it's not really a horror movie

I don't want to spoil anything because I liked the movie but it's more about loss and death than horror. That said, there are some very chilling scenes in the film, and a couple good scares. I recommend it, but when will reviewers learn not to over-hype a small film that needs to find an audience? Don't make people's expectations stratospherically high and then have them be disappointed by what they see...
