This is so weak. So much for cause and effect storytelling and so much for actions having consequences. Way to ctrl+z hundreds of great stories guys. How can you convince yourselves you're bringing something new to a title when the first thing you do is to ignore all the progress that has been made with the character and go back to square one. Lame.

What an incredible copout. They painted themselves into a corner in order to include the Spiderman franchise into the Civil War story arc and then, left with nowhere else to turn, they did a mystical mulligan. Forgivable, in my mind, had they just included Peter’s foolish unmasking but this nonsense with wiping all of his personal back stories is just weak. Rather than build on the story lines to date they have just bombed them to rubble. Frankly if that is the best this writing team can come up with then I have no interest in continuing my subscription this title. As Bug pointed out there now seems little difference between Amazing and Ultimate; a title I have already told them I had no interest in when they tried replacing my subscription to Sensational Spiderman with it.

Here's, in JMS's words, the conversation that occurred when Joe Q told him that they were changing JMS's original ending to One More DAy. It's pretty fucked up and once again shows what little respect Marvel has for its readers and writers: To explain, here's the conversation I had with Marvel, in sum: "So what does Mephisto do?" I ask. "He makes everybody forget Peter's Spider-Man." "Uh, huh. So Aunt May's still in the hospital --" "No, he saves Aunt May." "But if all he does is save her life and make everybody forget he's Spidey, she still has a scar on her midsection." "No, he makes that go away too." "Okay...: "Then he wakes up in her house." "The house that was burned down?" "Right." "But how --" "Mephisto undoes that as well." "Okay. And the guys who shot at Peter and May and were killed, they're alive too? Mephisto can bring guys back from the dead?" "It's all part of the spell." "And Doc Strange can't tell?" "No," "And the newspaper articles? News footage?" "Joe, it's been forgotten." "I'm just asking is that stuff there or not there?" "Not there. And Peter's web shooters are back." "Is this the same spell or a different spell?" "Same spell." "How does making people forget he's Spidey bring back his web shooters?" "It's magic, okay?" "I see. And Harry's back." "Right." "And Mephisto does this too." "Yep." "So is Harry back from the dead, or has he been alive? If they ask him, hey Harry, what did you do last summer, will he remember? And the year before? And the year before? If he says they all went on a picnic two years ago, will they remember it?" "It's --" "Because if he now has a life he remembers, if he's not back from the dead, then you've changed the continuity you said you didn't want to change. Those are your only options: he was brought back from the dead, and there's a grave, and people remember him dying --" "Mephisto changes THEIR memories too." "-- or he's effectively been alive as far as our characters know, so he's been alive all along, so either way as far as our characters are concerned, continuity's been violated going back to 1971. How do you explain that?" "It's magic, we don't have to explain it."

If it was such a problem having Peter Parker being married to Mary Jane couldn't they just have gotten a divorce? I mean the coolest thing about Spider-Man is how relatable he is and how his problems are so real world. Divorce. Boom. Done. Then Dr. Strange could do his mind wipe thing so no one knows his identity.

When you reboot just your flagship character, one whose story intertwines with so many other characters, and not your entire comics universe, everything becomes royally screwed up. And when you say that everything somehow still happened but nobody remembers it or even wonders why they can't remember, that's just bullshit storytelling right there.

After reading AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #546, it still doesn't make any sense why Quesada ordered the reboot. Yes, Peter's back in a situation similar to where he used to be in 1985, but the thing is, I ALREADY READ those stories in 1985. For all the hoopla, "Brand New Day" is just a rehash of old story ideas dressed up in modern art with a few different character names. And to make matters worse, Peter doesn't even appear as Spider-Man in #546, which is just an insanely brilliant way to bring in those mythical "new readers" looking to read Spider-Man.

I'm dropping the series. When Mephisto returns and "magics" everything back to the way it was prior to "One More Day," let me know, but until then I'll be reading GREEN LANTERN and BOOSTER GOLD instead.

Can I get my money back from the last few years seeing as how none of it ever happened? I didn't always agree with what JMS was doing with the character, but he did it VERY WELL. This asinine twist completely undercuts the "power" of the unmasking and about 30 years of continuity, all because Joe Q. hated MJ. Thanks for dumping on the fans because you didn't want Peter to grow up. BTW: I love May so much I'm going to sacrifice my happinesss so that old woman can live a few years longer, she means so much to me, I only have her in THREE FRIGGIN' PANELS then I'm off to Harry Osborne's party. They stopped knowing he was Iron Man from that moment on. With Joephisto's deal, YEARS of Spider-man have been changed. Peter Parker know's that he's Spider-Man, obviously.

Peter Parker knows that he unmasked in front of the world in Civil War.

Mephisto made it so no-one can quite remember who was underneath Spider-Man's mask when that happened, but:

Peter Parker has no memory of Mephisto's involvement.

So isn't Peter ENORMOUSLY confused why no-one else seems to remember that it was him? In fact, shouldn't he still be of the belief that the whole world knows?

Money talks.

"DS: ... As great as the movies are, we can do things in comics and this medium—especially this thrice-monthly format—that movies can't!" Apparently not because the difference between the movies and comic Spidey is what now? Both are losers, both are single, both spin a web any size. You had a chance to tell interesting tales with a married Spidey showing growth and maturity but screw that let's all jump in the way back machine and head back to the mid 70's for loser Parker(but updated with some new hip lingo). Keep drinking the Kool Aid Mighty Marvel Staffers I'm sure this change to Spidey and the marriage will turn out MUCH better than the Clone Saga or Chapter One by Byrne did. Third try is the charm right? Be sure to watch your back Dan, when (not if) this fails someone is going to be thrown under the bus. First, where's the artist? It says a lot about the state of comics, the state of the industry, when the artist is considered incidental to the creative process, especially at Marvel. Marvel was always artist driven (even though the writer took most of the credit). Now, it's editor driven and the artist just draws. Artist is only above letterer on the creative scale.

I like a lot of things about Slott. He's positive about comics, he respects the work of others, past and present. But his logic is a little faulty on tools like mindwipes, etc.

You might use such a comic bookish story device on a single issue, story, storyline or in a specific book as he sighted, but not on almost 40 years worth of stories (yes, I think this affects more stories and creators than we know). Plus, if you like JMS, Romita Jr., Roger Stern, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Al Milgrom, Bill Mantlo, Len Wein, Gerry Conway, Ross Andru and Gil Kane...well, too bad for you.

JMS was right. Good fantasy has rules. That's one earmark between good fantasy and bad fantasy.

"And now, Gollum, I shall put on the ring and you'll be a simple Hobbit again and I'll be dating an elf maiden and Sauron will be a nice guy and..."

I'm afraid we asked for this crap. We asked for it with all the endless slobbering praise for "Ultimate Spider-Man" and our endless slobbering appraisal of the "Ultimate" concept as some reinvention of the friggin wheel. Now don't mistake me. I think "Ultimate Spider-man" is and has been a consistantly well written and well drawn book. And I don't object to the "Ultimate" concept as some rabid old school fanboy who holds the original continuity as sacred and beyond reproach. Rather, I simply see through to the irony of "Ultimate Spider-man". For what is supposed to be this fresh and inventive break from established continuity, all that results is another *version* of the death of Ben Parker, another *version* of the Peter/Norman/Harry conflict, another version of the death of Gwen Stacy, another version of Venom/Carnage/Doc Ock/Clone saga etc. So this book really amounts to no more than a well executed rehash and recycling of the established continuity's status quo. And there is certainly nothing fresh or inventive to the magic wand clean-slate continuity gimmick of the "Ultimate" concept. It had been done many times before and with mostly lackluster results ("Heroes Reborn" John Byrne's Spider-Man run). So we get one good book with USM and before the ink even dries on issue #2 every fanboy and his dog is shouting "Lets Ultimatize the whole Marvel U!" Slow down. Its not the "Ultimatizing" that makes "Ultimate Spider-man" a good book. USM was hot for the same reason "Powers" was hot. For the same reason as Kevin Smith's "Daredevil" and "Green Arrow". For the same reason as "Midnight Nation" and "Rising Stars". SOLID STORYTELLING and SOLID ARTWORK. I say all of this because its obvious that this "Brand New Day" debacle is just a thinly veiled attempt to turn "Amazing Spider-Man" into "Ultimate Spider-Man. When as far as I'm concered,J. Michael Straczynski's work in ASM (when he was on his game)was far and away better than anything in USM to date. I really got into the whole mystical/totems angle. The opening Morlun storyarc was more pontent and gripping than anything in USM to date. But more than the execution of JMS's storytelling was the pandora's box of potential that it opened up. New questions, new villians, new abilities, new storyarc directions. Whether the mystical/totem arc was your cup of tea or not you have to at the very least respect it for being a genuinely fresh and inventive attempt to PROGRESS and EVOLVE the Spidey mythos. At the conclusion of the "The Other" storyline, I was excitedly anticipating the new stories that would result. How Peter would use these new abilities and perhaps discover more. What would the ominously foreshadowed consequence be? What new threats would confront him? What came out of that other cocoon? All this potential thrown away, and for what? To take a giant step backwards!? And to accomplish this Joe Q employs the equivalent of the LAMEST, COMPLACENT HACK plot device in all of storydom. Say it with me now-"...suddenly he woke up and it was all just a dream." When do us readers get to wake up from this crap? Think I'll do so now. And I emplore all of you to do likewise. This garbage can't be rewarded.

Peter doesn't remember any of it. Despite the comparison to the other stories where characters/the general public got amnesia about past events, in this case the past was actually altered so that things like Peter unmasking literally never happened. Since it now never happened, Peter has no memory of it. Comparing it to stories involving enduced amnesia might be a better way to soft soap the issue and sell it to people but it's also totally inaccurate. I wonder if maybe the new creative have convinced themseleves it's just amnesia to make it palatable to themselves. But it isn't. Aunt May is healed, Harry is alive. Sh*t changed. It's more than a mind wipe.

In defense of the review, it was an interview about BND, not OMD. And, really, these guys had no part in OMD. They're just the guys the whole mess was handed off to. That said, not sure I'd have taken that hand off.

Reminds me of the story of when NBC floated an offer to David Letterman to take over from Jay Leno when Leno didn't take off great right away. Someone pointed out to Letterman, "You wanted to take over Carson's The Tonight Show. That's gone. What you're being offered is just damaged goods." Everyone wants to work on Amazing Spider-Man. But they really wanted the Amazing Spider-Man with history of great stories told by great artists and writers. That's gone. It's dead. They were offered damaged goods. And they took it. Joe Q's Big Misconception
by Jinxo
Jan 11th, 2008
03:46:48 PM
So Joe Q's big pitch is to return Spider-Man to the iconic Spider-Man, to the original "hook" of the character that made him popular: the young, down on his luck loner guy.

The problem is... he's wrong. Those traits are actually an outgrowth of the hook Stan Lee used that actually made Spider-Man different, relatable and popular. At the time Spidey was created superheroes had perfect lives. Stan created characters that lived in the real world, had real problems and who everything did not go right for. THAT was the hook. Peter Parker was a real guy in the real world with real problems. For drama's sake Peter got extra helpings of real world problems. That's probably also why Stan Lee went with not keep Peter a teen for forever. Real people, real world. Real people do grow up, they go to college, they get married. And they do make mistakes. Peter often makes bad decisions but not becuase he's an idiot. He makes mistakes because real people make mistakes. It's not an inherent character trait that can be pulled out to explain insane decisions.

Peter's true hook was (WAS) a real guy who grew, learned from his mistakes and evolved as a person. OMD did not return his true "hook", it robbed him of it on multiple levels: that the current Peter would be dumb enough to make such a deal, that his history and growth was taken from him... Having someone die because of your mistake? That's literally definitive Spider-Man and real world. Making a deal with a mystical demon to change history? That's not Spider-Man at all and that's not real world.

Well, wow, that's even more idiotic. So Mephisto is already going in and rewriting Spider-Man's past anyway. But instead of rewriting the marriage AND the unmasking he instead rewrites the marriage away and then just blurs memories of the unmasking?!?!? That's stupid! Especially because, technically speaking, getting rid of the marriage should instantly zap the unmasking. The unmasking was an outgrowth of Peter opening up and trusting people, letting them in. He let MJ in, then May found out he was Spider-Man, so then he trusts Stark when he says to open up to the world. If he stays removed from MJ and Aunt May never finds out then there is no foundation to build on for him to be trusting enough in Stark to unmask!!!!

Wow. Just when I thought I'd hit the bottom level of crap, bam, there's a whole new layer.

One of the problems I see is that the response to the worries over the fact that continuity is messed up is just so insulting. It is all the whole "Oh, you comic buyers are all a bit stupid buy our snakeoil and believe us when we say it is all fine" when it is obviously and quite blatently not.

If all it is is a mind-wipe what happened to the photos of Peter Parker's face on the front page of all the newspapers and played on a loop on CNN as CIVIL WAR told us? If Pete never married MJ how can it all still be valid? Don't even get me started on how fucking stupid it is that some Silver Surfer villain wants the Parkers' marriage but not their actual relationship...

No temptation at all. This was the hero that got me into comics as a kid and lured me back as an adult. Peter Parker was the character. Spider-Man was the job. Once you invalidate all of Peter’s interpersonal relationships, decisions, and their consequences from over the last 20 years there is scarcely anything left of the core product but another guy in a recognizable red and blue suit. I’m sure it will sell well. A product as valuable as this is not handled in such a way unless their focus groups and market research insured Marvel it would do well. I keep thinking about that line in the OMD where Mephisto says that a small part of Peter’s soul will forever remember and be in anguish. I think that small part of the soul is just us, the small part of the readership that Marvel knew it would sacrifice to make the change but did so to cash in on the bigger payday.

...by the implication that a) being married is somehow less interesting than being single (trust me, it isn't) and b) that MJ was somehow a lousy character for Peter (which of course accounts for the miserable failure of Spider Man loves Mary Jane).

But then again, with the Civil War, Marvel Universe has become such an utterly wretched place that I've got no interest at all in reading Marvel books.

I think my kid will like DC, though. At least there the company understands what makes these characters special. Marvel has become trash.

I'm confused by all this... from all indications the aftermath of Civil War is still there in the Marvel Universe, so if Spider-Man's identity has been erased to the world by Mephisto (and how Dr. Strange would not sense this I do not know) where is Spider-Man in regards to Civil War? Has he registered or is he (still despite Mephisto's shenanigans) an outlaw wanted for not registering his secret identity with the government? This makes no sense!

I think what the real issue here is not that 'fans' are angry Spidey and MJ are no longer married, it's that Joe Quesada has been angry for 20 years... that they were. Get that folks, Twenty years... TWEEEEEEEEEEENNNTY YEEEEEEEEARS You think people have been mad during the last few days? Picture that times 20 years. (That's a fuckin' LOOOONG time) In the past twenty years, America has lived through the Gulf War, 9/11, the Iraq war and Leonardo DiCapro's 'I'm KING OF THE WORLD' Titanic -- and we all know how that ended... During all that fuckin' time, all Joe Quesada could think was... 'Damn, Spidey's married now.' 'It's sucks, damn it! It SUCKS!' It's all he could talk about, at conventions, in the toilet, shitting... 'I cannot fucking BELIEEEEEEEEEVE Spidey's married' In bed next to his wife 'No... no...! NOOOOOO! Whoa baby, sorry, had this nightmare... Spidey was married!' He has been hating. He has been waiting. He will have his revenge. He will get that marriage, even if he has to eat it and shit it out of his ass, Spidey's marriage is his...!' And it is. Both Joe Q and Mephisto the devil now have Spidey's marriage. Twenty years in the making, folks. It's a long time to be bitter about a comic book, Joe. And people say fanboys are nuts? Someone get Joey a mirror? He screams unhealthy. He's been eating a lot during the last twenty years but they've been a few french fries short in the happy meals. Bad Peter! Don't marry that supermodel! No one will be able to relate! No one will buy your comics! No one will buy your toys and most of all, NO ONE will see your movies. 'Now GO! Wait -- Ahoy, Matey! Iceberg, straight ahead!

The argument that a married Peter Parker is less interesting is ridiculous. A good writer can make ANY situation interesting, and a bad writer can't. The end. Stop blaming the marriage. Blame the crappy writers who can't make it interesting. The argument that Peter has lost his supporting cast is ridiculous. A good writer will create new, interesting characters that we care about and who will become part of the supporting cast. Flash Thompson COULD be a very interesting character if he was handled well, but he's not. Harry Thompson will just be a rehash. Make new friends, new enemies, and make them as important and interesting as the old ones. It can be done, and a good writer can do it. There was NO reason to go this route. If you must undo the marriage, have Peter get a divorce. Why is that SO terrible?! People who get divorced can't be heroes?! WTF! One of the previous talkbackers was right. The allure of Peter Parker was that the things that happened to him and his friends were things that happened in the real world. Successes and failures. If Aunt May had died, Peter would have learned that his actions have consequences. That's the real world. Not this B.S.

What if Mary Jane had cheated on Peter because she felt inconsequential in comparison to her always doing the right thing husband, and then after trying to work it out, they find that they can't, and get divorced. Oh no, wait, we can't have cheating and divorce dealt with in SPIDER-MAN! Heaven forbid! MJ gets shot and killed and we see Peter dealing with that pain, and mourning, and slowly putting his shattered life together afterwards. For anyone at Marvel who thinks, well comics are for kids, so we can't deal with topics like divorce-- Are you JOKING?!?.. how much of your readership is made up of kids whose parents ARE divorced! You would actually have an opportunity to HELP kids understand what something like that is like for their parents, as well as help them to deal with it in their own lives. So again, by dealing with adult, real-world topics in a dramatic way, you can not only send a POSITIVE message out there if you so choose, you also make your characters MORE relatible, even to kids. Seriously, we love the super-stuff too, but this is just shitty story-telling plain and simple. Pathetic.

So far, the only one with the guts is JMS because he's now OFF the book! How about someone else be honest instead of everyone being Joe Q's bitches. Oh, and if you @ssholes are so irreverent, how about you actually get some REAL answers out of Joe. Make him explain the inconsistencies this has created instead of accepting the whole "just wait and see, we've got it all figured out" repsonse. (Which really means, "we're hoping you all forget these questions, or that we can stall long enough to figure out the answers ourselves.") I CALL BULLSHIT!

And even I can see where this is going. Joe Q says he hates MJ even though Mary Jane Loves Spiderman is one of the hallmark outside of the box titles of the past decade. Apparently he hates her so much that they're bringing her back as a rookie costumed hero named "Jackpot"who's going to be a pain in the ass/love interest for Spiderman. So basically it's bullshit. Peter and Mary Jane will fall in love all over again, eventually remember everything and it will be all back to the status quo. We all knew the deus ex machina was the only way they were going to undo the unmasking which most of you hated when it happened. Everyone was saying "this is what's wrong with comics. Why can't Spiderman just be Spiderman again." And this is what you get. Mary Jane as a superhero. Which means the character whose actually getting the shaft here is The Black Cat. This is apparently also happening in the Ultimate line with Mary Jane as Firestar. Sounds interesting, perhaps a bit misguided but nothing to roam the countryside with torches searching for the Joe Q monster. That honor would go to Loeb's upcoming Red Hulk book. THAT LOOKS LIKE COMPLETE ASS. "Duuuh, I know, let's make the hulk concept so simple a monkey with downe syndrome can understand it." FORGET ABOUT THE CLONE SAGA OR TURNING TONY STARK INTO A TEENAGER. THE RED HULK IS THE MOST ASSININE IDEA, EVER. PERIOD."
Kids Don't Read Comics
by LaserPants

I like the idea of dealing with divorce to help kids deal with the very real threat of divorce in their lives. BUT, the sad fact is that kids don't read comics anymore. Kids don't read anymore, period. They play video games, watch movies, and take copious amount of attention deficit and mood disorder pharmaceuticals. 90% of comics readership fall within the 18-35 demographic. Ergo, theres all kinds of adult issues that comics can and should explore -- seeing as how the lions share of the readership are adults anyway, whats the point of soft-peddling it? So, having Peter deal with the death of his wife or deeply irritating crusty old aunt who should have been killed off years ago in an emotionally mature manner would be perfect. But, alas, we're stuck with the deeply creepy and deeply stupid Joey Q, so forget about anything that satisfying ever happening.

You know, they could have fixed Spider-Man without all this magic bullshit if they had only slowed down. Just taken a step back, maybe even a month off and started fixing things in normal continuity. They should have had Dan Slott as the writer before this (so I could have enjoyed his writings on Spidey like I've been waiting to do, not now though) and ideally Quesada would not interfere either. Of course noe of that happened and you had, Spider Totems, Gwen Babies, New Avengers, House of M, The Other, Civil War ("his unmasking will provide YEARS of stories!!!" more like one year where you don't even deal with it because it was fucking retarded to begin with), Back in Black (which wasn't because it tied into the movie -FUCK YOU Q) and then this OMD and BND combo mega kraka-BOOOOM!!!! cluster fuck of idiocy (which of course is going to lead to years of stories like how MJ and Pete didn't get married, how Harry isn't dead but he still hates Spidey even though his father is alive, etc.) FUCK YOU QUESADA. I've thought you were shit for years now and I really honestly hope this leads to you not working in your current job title. @$$holes, give him shit. He does it to us.

Garbage like this is the reason I quit. Just another nail in the coffin for them. The only good thing that they produce is the Essentials and Masterworks. Just wait. All of this will backfire. Marvel seems to have a nasty habit of doing that to themselves. Also, mark my words that there is no way they will be able to produce three Amazing Spider-Man's a month. Soon one will be late which will affect the other and so on and so on. The only reason I know about what is going on is from friends and the internet. Why do I care? Simply because I grew up with these fantastic characters and to see them gutted in such a waste. It is a crime. Surely Marvel could have come up with a better plan than this. Very tacky and pathetic Marvel.

That ASM issue doesn't seem to be selling that well there. There was plenty on the shelf and they still had a full box full too. I wouldn't be surprised if it did extremely well though. The House of bad ideas has been getting some press for this "significant event" just like they they bought with their other "significant events" like Captain America "dieing". By now Spider-man readers must be used to it and are gluttons for punishment or brain washed. Either or.

I am curious to find out how the "new" Spidey sells, almost at a remove from my anger about it. I'm really fascinated to see if there will be too much backlash. When I went to get my comics they seemed to have stacks of the book just sitting and not being sold too. Again, anger aside, Joe Q strikes me as the PT Barnum of comics. He's not all about building and maintaining story, he's about splashy headline making "happenings" to keep interest in comics high. And on that front he's done a good job. Seriously, on just a PR level it is impressive how much Marvel has been in the news for the past few years. Now all the things they were in the news for weren't all super great things. Part of the point. Generate that controversy. And in this case I think the readers were part of his controversy plan. On one level he wanted to retcon Spidey. On another he did want the fans angry so as to generate headlines. He f***ing said in an interview that the opening image of BND with Peter kissing another woman was designed to piss off fans! He wanted angry fans because a huge mass of angry fans equals headlines.

But I think he miscalculated. His normal plan seems to be do something controversial and upsetting, get headlines, convince the fans to stick with him and trust he's doing the right thing and then things calm down. Only this aint Civil War. This is such a much more hated change. He's pissed many fans off too much. I think many are beyond "bearing with him" on this one and are just walking away. It could be a huge tactical blunder. I so want sales figures to see if it is.

...I loved comics. Marvel comics. I bought a lot of 'em, including the full X-line at its height in the '90s. And then one day I realized that it had been months since I picked up my comics at my local comics store, because I didn't care any more. Was this because I "grew up"? Nah. It was because the stories deteriorated. More and more in comics, no one is allowed to grow permanently. Characters can stay the same, get rebooted to a previous level of development, or become jerks, but they cannot grow and change in positive - or even distinctively negative - ways. I didn't *like* the characters in my comics any more. When I find a comic with characters I like, or when the comics characters I like are presented in interesting ways in other media (X-Men 2, Spider-Man 2), I gobble it up. I'm about to go watch my "Heroes" DVDs now. It's not that I am no longer drawn to comics-types stories - it's that the comics left me behind. Yes, yes, enough about me. The reason I'm blathering on about my boring life is that, sadly, while I find the developments in Spidey's life to be appalling, I see them as being a...natural outgrowth of the direction that Marvel has been headed in for quite some time. The reason that the Spidey mythos has been both enduring and updateable is that, as others have pointed out, the basic idea of the mythos is that of a smart-but-wimpy Everyman suddenly getting really cool powers and then having to figure out how to save the world while juggling a normal life. It's not inherently a story about a high school student, a college student, a scientist, a journalist, a husband, a single guy, a whatever...it's a story about a guy sharing the concerns of his readers, who just happens to be able to climb up walls. Any halfway decent writer should be able to use that to create interesting stories. Evidently, however, Joe Quesada is more interested in portraying his own wish-fulfillment fantasies on the pages of Spider-Man, and damn the fans who might feel otherwise. I wasn't buying the Spidey books before BND, so I can't pretend that I could make any difference as part of a boycott. But there's something very, very *wrong* about core Spider-Man continuity being reduced to ashes just for the sake of making him a swingin' single again. No Everyman has years of his life wiped out magically or has the consequences of past actions yanked away. Those involved can defend this all they want, but ye gods - if the clone storyline flopped miserably, how do they really expect this storyline to do well? I'm sorry, guys. This sucks.

And the comic book medium is a valid art form. The 39 issues of Amazing Spider-Man (plus annuals) that Steve Ditko drew were classics. Some of the John Romita issues were good if you could deal with the fact that he was a romance comics artist. He resolved the running joke about Aunt May trying to set Peter up on a blind date by introducing Mary-Jane. He resolved the whole Gwen Stacy and Green Goblin story arcs. And it wasn't that bad that his Mary-Jane and Gwen were as identical as Betty and Veronica. But that's it, the Ditko stuff and the Romita stuff that tied up the loose ends from the Ditko issues. That's all the Spider-Man you ever need to read, those are the only issues that matter. Everything after that.. c'mon, the Shocker, The Melter, The Jackel? Not classic villains. The Kingpin? A guy who's a solid mass of muscle who actually works out and builds up his muscles so he looks fat in order to trick his enemies? The Punisher? a rip off of a popular paperback thriller series called The Executioner. At least in those days when they totally screwed up and gave Spidey six arms or a Spider-Mobile it only took a couple issues to resolve the problem. Or sure, it would be sweet if Spider-Man was one big long 5000 issue continued story. Except try telling new readers they have to get all the back issues or paperbacks to know what's going on.

Nope, sorry kids, that twenty years worth of stories you want to cling to, the comics you grew up with, were just crap to begin with. Just a corporation cranking our product featuring a character who had been interesting for a few years in the '60s. A big money company trying to keep their cash cow flagsnip title visable the way Disney tries occasionally to remind people about Mickey Mouse.

Instead of getting the rights to the real Black Cat, they just make up some lame shit "bad girl with crush on hero" junk based on Miller's Electra ripping off Eisner's rip-off of the Batman/Catwoman relationship. Giving Spidey a mentally controlled magic black costume was just Shooter's way of messing things up, trying to give Spidey a Flash-ring or that Twirly thing Lynda Carter did. MacFarlane wasn't a story teller, he just designed pin-up pages he could auction off. Third generation characters like VeMan and Homogollum just don't matter.

You didn't miss Spider-Man by being born too late, the Ditko issues have been reprinted plenty of times, just buy them and read them and don't worry about anything not written by Stan Lee. Oh sure, there were a few touching or entertaining or nicely drawn issues along the way, but they were just products churned out by a heartless corporation. Sure, you can pick up a comic and try to visit your old friend Spider-Man, but he's not there. It's just a slapped together story fragment and some pictures of Spidey. And that's if you can figure out which comic is "real" and which is a manga version or an alternate future about his daughter or an Ultimate version set in a different universe altogether. If a company can get away with publishing a bunch of comics about a character that don't fit into the characters continuity, why would you expect that they care if any of them do?

Send wedding cards inviting Joe Quesada to the wedding of Peter Parker and MaryJane Watson and, please, send them as registered post or recorded delivery. This means that somebody will have to sign to receive them and if several thousand are sent this will soon cause a major headache! 4. The same method as number 3, just send invitations for the funeral of Peter Parker/Spider-Man instead! Just a few ideas folks; the campaign is in full swing, please lend your support and hopefully we can let Marvel know that we're not prepared to tolerate Joe Quesada's editorial mandates any longer. Thank you.

those are some rocking ideas you had there for little protests to Marvel, a bit easier than my initial thought of flying to NYC and turning up at marvel with some home made Wolverine claws ! (Wolvie berserker style !) and beating seven bells of shit outta Joe "Jackass" Quesada ! what bugs the most is that it was JMS's stories that got me back into Marvel comics with a vengeance ! and now i just feel completely cheated outta years of stories i really hope the @ssholes rip him a new one on Monday, and if they don't, i think it's safe to say WE WILL ! DEATH TO "JACKASS" QUESADA !

ok, here's what i really think ! i think OMD was a big pile of utter bullshit, and that this reboot is just another example of some of the crap that Marvel have been churning out for sometime now, i think it's safe to say this could be the begining of the end for spider-man's massive populairty, especially after the big piece of turd that was spider-man 3, i hope to god that "Jackass" Quesada will leave the x-men titles alone as they seem to be the only thing worth reading the Marvel 616 universe, personally i think the Ultimate universe is also a good bunch of stories so hopefully he won't fuck with that either.
The end of Amazing Spider-man...

...will hopefully mean the end of Spider-man's biggest nemesis, Joe Quesada. Or maybe he's sold his soul to the Devil to ensure he gets his way over the whole OMD/BND fiasco... fuck, it's probably where he got the idea to begin with! On a more serious note, not living in the U.S., I was wondering if there had been any backlash from the Bible Belt regarding Peter's deal with Mephisto. Normally they're not slow in condemning these kind of stories, so has there been any response?

I just read the first issue of "Brand New Day"....and it's the same day I had back in 1973. This has to be the lamest re-boot in history. Now you expect us to buy this crap and worse, you insult us by trying to convince us it's a bold new idea. Want to show some balls, Joe? Wanna ramp it up a notch, Marvel? Kill May. Let Peter kill the Kingpin in retaliation. Now THAT would have ramifications! (And heck, if it failed, you could always do another not-a-re-boot, right? Instead, we are now obliged to this neutered, antiseptic 'happy go lucky' Peter, unburdened by the difficulties of job, family and responsibility on top of his superhero duties. Wheeee! Harry Osborne's alive again, just for shits and giggles, too! Look how cutting edge we are!!! Spider-man's fun again!!! Except...there's not a damn thing about this character I care about now. He's safe. He's got no real burdens anymore. Nothing he did for the last twenty years, nothing he does now, has ANY consequences. How fucking un-heroic. And how boring. I think I'll stop buying. I stuck with the Spider-Man titles through the black uniform stories. Through the clone stories. Through the 'Other' and the Spider-totem crap. I've been here a while, and I paid your paycheck. Through the years when the speculators made it necessary to buy 6 different editions of the same book to get a whole story, I was there. Through the bankruptcy, I was there. way to go, Quesada. You've finally written a Spider-man that I officially don't care about(and yes, we all know YOU are driving the plotline, regardless of who's given writing credit). Today I read a book that made less sense, and had less impact on me than all that previously mentioned dross combined. And you've done this why? To try and lure in an imaginary demographic of 12 year olds who you think will shell out 9 bucks every a month for this? As an adult reader, I can say with conviction, it's been YEARS since I've seen anybody less than college age shelling out for comic books. Sorry Joe. You've ruined it for me and everybody like me. If all the other grown ups who actually earn enough money to support this rather pricey hobby go the way I'm going, you've likely killed Marvel comics.
Plot Holes

There are just too many unprofessional open plot holes in this whole Mephisto thing. I mean how can they say that continuity has not been changed. The Osbourne continuity is completely fucked up. What happened to Harry's little boy? What happen to his marriage to Liz? Are all of those great Roger Stern Hobgoblin stories invalidated where he kidnapped Harry's wife, etc? If no one knows Spiderman's identity, what about the now alive Norman Osbourne? Obviously the Gwen Stacy story happened so he must know Peter's identity. You mean to tell me that he has not told Harry in all this time?

What do you want to bet that Loeb or whomever read STAN LEE: THE RISE & FALL OF THE AMERICAN COMIC BOOK and came across the info that in the '70s, TV execs prepping the INCREDIBLE HULK show wanted to make him red instead of green because "red is the color of anger". Well, TV does know best. No less than Cheech and Chong spoofed this with the stoner buds visiting the set of The Mighty Wamba about a red Hulk-like character in CHEECH & CHONG'S NEXT MOVIE.

Written and drawn by Buzz Maverik!

Pete is reeling. Those little bubble things that aren't bubble appear over his head like Gil Kane used to draw.

PETE:Deal with the devil? I'm a scientist. I don't even believe in the devil. Extra-dimensional...Uncle Ben and Aunt May raised me better than that! My whole life as Spider-Man...more than I remember...has taught me more than that! And Mary Jane has always meant more to me than...anyone! I didn't make a deal with Mephisto!"

Villains lair. Suitably spooky like Gene Colan used to draw. One second, Pete's strapped to one of those virtual reality sets like Barry Windsor-Smith drew in his Weapon X stories, then...

The next, he breaks free. Nobody ever drew Spidey breaking free like Ross Andru!

PETE:"I don't believe any of this any more!"

FAUSTUS(off panel):"It seem's our little Spider has outgrown therapy, gentelmen..."

Pete, in Spidey togs minus the mask like Romita Sr. used to draw, faces...Dr. Faustus, Mastermind, Mindworm and Mysterio. FAUSTUS:"...I suggest we simply beat him to death!"

...in the Simpsons movie "because the government has run out of crediblity, they thought they'd borrow some of mine..." I suspect Quesada brought Slott in for his credibility.

Of course, even though I like Slott's writing, his work isn't so much the kind of story he's supposed to be writing as it is ABOUT that kind of story. Kinda like Alan Moore doing old SUPERMAN in SUPREME, with the irony toned down.

Still, if you see Slott, Hanks, or even me, for that matter, in person, please just leave us be.

...that Part Two of the OMD interview with Quesadilla that AICN told us we could expect to see on Monday?

Not me, and it's Tuesday. Maybe Joe's seen the reviews or read the Pt. One talk-back and backed out? Or maybe the interviewer read the talk-back and came at Joe too hardball and got the interview canceled? Or maybe I'm just impatient to see what happens.

Get that last part there, AICN PsTB? I'm not complaining or being sarcastic - this is the first topic at AICN that I've really been interested in since the last episode of Heroes. So, is part two coming or not? (Or will a two part interview take three years, like one of Quesadilla's six issue monthly mini-series?)

[Yes I know I got his name wrong, and no that's not meant to be racist. I like Quesadillas and tostadas and enchiladas and tamales and tacos and burittos. It's Joe Quesada's editorship I find unpalatable. I never even hated Shooter or DeFalco, but this guy...]

Yea i've been looking for this interview with "Jackass" i was really hoping to find it yesterday, of course i wasn't exactly suprised when it didn't appear, i'm betting he backed out because he knows that if the interviewers don't give him a hard time we will. After all, i've not spoken to one Marvel fan who thought this direction was a good idea, and most of those people are calling for him to be fired (or worse !) maybe now Marvel will sit up and take notice and realise that EVERYONE hates this bullshit idea. and if they don't sit up and take notice now, they deffo will when they get their sales figures back. i for one will no longer be stocking ANY Spider-man books in my shop !

I got a kick out of the boards over at Marvel, where their into serious damage control. Posts are disappearing faster than Parkers marriage. Even so, the response has been overwhelmingly against this direction. It seems Marvel is trying its best to save me money from comics I no longer have any desire to buy.
