If it's 80 minutes long, probably 78 of those minutes will be people just walking around.
This is a great film...

Although this poster doesn't really convey that. I hate the whole emo thing, that's not what this film is about. It's an absorbing murder mystery.
How Draining Is This One?

Should I be prepared for lots of "thinking" about "life" and "stuff" after the credits are done? If so that's cool, I will simply sneak a few bevy's in my fanny-pack. So, now that Doyle has worked with Van Sant does this mean that Jean-Yves Escoffier will work with Wong Kar-Wai!? Oh, that's right, he's dead. Shame.

Is this supposed to be a return to form? Gus Van Sant is always seen as a brilliant director by me with one project, and then he somehow manages to go astray. Elephant was amazing... Last Days was, in my opinion, a bore. I hope this one is better.
I also disliked Last Days

While I enjoyed Elephant. I think Paranoid Park is better than both of those films. Not that dogphart's comment even really needs to be addressed, but there isn't any gay themes or subtext in this movie. The protagonist is fairly disinterested when he loses his virginity to his girlfriend, but it's because he's brooding about something else. Gabe Nevins is a good looking kid and the movie is shot beautifully, but if you read something gay into that then figure it out for yourself.

I like this better than I like ELEPHANT, LAST DAYS, or GERRY, but I think it's sort of like what happens if you add them all up and then Gus strips that technique he's been working on right down to the bone. I can tell he shot a much longer version of this film, and then cut it tighter, so you get that dreamy Chris Doyle camerawork of (yes, Horace, it's true) people walking, but there's a pulse to it that there hasn't been in the other films I mentioned. It just... works in this one. It really does.

in the UK. It's fantastic, just a great film about a boy with something on his mind.
