Or not (it is also set a long, long time ago- predating whatever time period Soulcalibur is taking place in). Cross-promotion sucks, SW has so much become just another brand, it's almost as if the original three were accidents. You know this to be true. However, Bandai probably have other characters up their sleeves if they're releasing this as a teaser... There's a shot in the Soulcalibur trailer that shows a dark tower somewhat familiar... You heard it here first: Sauron will be battling Mitsurugi and al! God, that would actually suck a tub dry... Make that a pool.

All I want is the defnitive Star Wars game
by Han Cholo
Jan 9th, 2008
10:41:46 PM
The Star Wars game I want is essentially Elder Scrolls: Oblivion but set in the Star Wars universe. You start off as a nobody and build your way up, becoming a Jedi, Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, or whatever you want. I don't want an online multiplayer game because you can't add to those games plus the online fee. I think Bethesda software did Oblivion right by making the game open ended yet allowed players to mod the game and add to it in order to fulfill their gaming experience. All Lucasarts would have to do is license the Havok engine and modify it in order to make possibly the greatest Star Wars experience yet. They could even follow up on the game by releasing updates such as new planets every so often with new quests to keep players going. Why no one has done this or even attempted this is beyond me. I guess progressive thinking in terms of some licenses isn't looked upon well.

it wouldn't work. Look how big the world of Oblivion is...now lets say that's one planet...in order to get the true open-ended Star Wars game, you'd need multiple planets, each one with drastically different designs and quests with multiple plots, depending what type of character you choose...after all, there's no point in being a smuggler if at the end of the game, you fight a Sith Lord, you'd get your ass handed to you.

Which is why you would need multiple storylines, with unique quests for each character-type.

The closest we have gotten is knights of the Old Republic, which while a great series of games, is still very linear, and ultimately you are restricted to two versions of the same career path. by the end of the game, you have force powers and a lightsaber, the only possible difference comes, really from dialogue options which tell you the same story but from a light or dark perspective. A true, open-ended, do what you like Star Wars game would take years to develop...in fact it wouldn't be a stretch to say that if Lucasarts started now, they mighten't be finished until the next generation of consoles came out in 8-10 years.

Personally, I'd like to see a Knights of the Old Republic III come out before anything else...not an online game, but a proper sequel.

I don't really understand how we are supposed to believe any of the other characters can block a lightsaber, and it's a bummer both characters won't be on both consoles, but whatever. I would still take either one on a game any day and it will totally be a lot of fun, if only for a little bit. Then I'll go back to Kilik and play the actual game.

.....if you could unlock Darth Maul as a secret playable character along with the Duel of the Fates theme? Pure geeektastic geeekarsm. Also an Ewok.......Gon-style. Either that or Sebulba. And from the sounds of that article, this isn't even beyond the realm of possibility since it seems like Namco Bandai are reported to have a whole host of other secret guest characters that wouldn't be revealed before the game is released; and I'd hate to think they negotiated with LucasArts for that long and polished George's knob that much just to get only 2 characters - albeit the 2 most recognizable ones. But seriously guys, I'm dead serious about having an Ewok there - a seriously bad-ass super-ass-kicking Ewok who just opens a can of unholy whooop-ass on you when you think he's going to go all Disney on you and start singing jungle sing-a-longs. Like others said, why not just make a Star Wars fighting game again, and this time use the the Soul Calibur enginge and make it good. I would play that. Darth Vader and Yoda thrown in for shits and giggles makes no sense. At least Link and Spawn sorta kinda made sense, Heiachi didn't but at least it wasn't Yoda. Namco if this was your idea (which I am sure it was) - lame. And yes Soul Calibur is the end all be all of fighting games, with Tekken a close second. Admit it DOA freaks.

by KingArcane

12:05:15 AM
I know fighting games aren't usually known for their deep narrative, but they all seem to have a slight semblance of a cohesive storyline as to why these people are in the same place kicking each other. If SC has such a story, how could characters from Star Wars possibly make sense? It's like if Blanka was suddenly fighting The Hulk. Oh, wait....
Problem: Soul Calibur never has blood/wounds.
by ZeroCorpse
Jan 10th, 2008
12:19:30 AM
So it's going to be Vader/Yoda fighting with practice lightsabers or something. Seriously, that's why I got sick of this series-- You're fighting with SWORDS, AXES, and SPIKES, but when you hit someone there's just a flash of light and they shuffle back, un-cut.

No wounds, No dismemberment, No blood dripping all over the place once you've been stabbed fifty times with a katana... NOTHING is realistic in this game. It sucks.

So why would I want to play as a neutered Darth Vader, whose lightsaber only stuns enemies, and is never going to just cut Voldo's fucking head off?

This is cool-yet-lame news. Waste of a good opportunity. The only way this game is any good is if they WISE UP and make the swords ACT LIKE SWORDS.

I wish Time Killers has been the one to evolve and get several sequels. Now THERE was a blade-fighting game. You could cut off arms, legs, and heads. You could lose a leg and KEEP FIGHTING. Blood was everywhere, and there was even a decent rip-off of a lightsaber, and an obvious Ash Williams (Evil Dead) clone, too.

Think about THAT as a modern game with 3D graphics... And then weep at the lame-ass Disneyfied anime shit that is called Soul Calibur.

Loved the first two SC(SE) games, but really, they're stupid now.

LOTR characters
by Staldo
Jan 10th, 2008
12:38:03 AM
it would be great if they brought in LOTR characters, and between them and the Star Wars characters the game was hijacked from the goofy original anime fighters and the series just became Star Wars vs. LOTR. Then they could bring in Leonidas, Beowulf, Wolverine and Harry Potter as "special guest" fighters. It would basically be that Ultimate Showdown song as a game.
Good point Staldo.

It seems like adding bonus characters just for shits and giggles without any connection seems so pointless. Then again, who the fuck thought putting Spawn in Soul Calibur would make sense? I have read rumors of more bonus characters though which makes me wonder. Will they all only be Star Wars characters or will they branch out into other franchises? I just think it would be silly. If they want to do that they should just leave Soul Calibur out of it and make another game. What about just adding new characters into the Soul Calibur game that are totally original and provide creative new fighting techniques? Where is the imagination? Sheesh. Having Vader in there will be fun but I would much rather see some original fighters. Like what abouta new mythical creature like Lizardman? Maybe a Minotaur or an Anubis or something. Or how about a Native American who travels to Europe on a ship? I think it's the right era to have him. He could wield a knife and a tomahawk or something. Star Wars makes no sense here and feels more gimmicky than anything else.

... close their eyes and listen to the sound of themself breathing. Block out all thoughts and concentrate only on the sound of air coming in and out of your nose. What do you smell? What sounds do you hear? How does the air taste? Then slowly allow your mind to re-open, and be mindful of what you observe. What thoughts creep into your head first? What is the source of your anger and displeasure?

Are you upset that a movie franchise you hold sacred has sold out for the 10,000th time in yet another cross promotion? Are you concerned that the integrity of the religion you have adopted (The Force) has been compromised by the introduction of its Jesus figure into a video game where the laws of the Force are not honored?

Or, are you a Soul Caliber fan, who is abhored by the introduction of alien characters to your world of terrestrial swordplay? Are you concerned about the continuity of laser based swords, when the battles you have fought thus far have been waged only with steel and other organic materials.

As you retreat back into your thoughts, remembering to take deep breaths, ask your self: If a lightsaber touches flesh, but does not cut, has it harmed at all? Or, if Voldo's blades encounter a lightsaber, will it parry, or will Voldo's blade be severed? What is Ivy's midichlorian count? Can your mind even calculate such vast inconsistencies.

As the headache creeps in, and your hands start to twitch, please, try not to die.

open ended games in space = fail
by ArcadianDS
Jan 10th, 2008
09:42:13 AM
space is vast and empty - two things that are a sure bet predictor for the failure of any 'open ended' game. OE games dont require vast expanses as much as they require condensed material - something interesting in every nook and cranny, so that when you're riding back to town for the 50 billionth time, you spot something you missed each time. This makes every return visit, even the 50 billiionth one, a worthy investment of time and effort. In space, you can't do that. Its static and open and empty. Take a look at Mass Effect - it tried to do that, and quite well (possibly the best plot driven RPG to date), but its design is to bombard you with quests on the first visit to a new planet/base, and once you mop those up, you really never have to return again.

If SW wants to take a hand at an Oblivion type game, it wont be in space, and probably wont be much about war as much as it is about individual skirmishes - and if you dont have stars and dont have wars, well you got Oblivion with pewpew lazers.

I know Spawn was in Soul Calibur 2, but who else (won't a Predator be cool)? Sorry, someone may already have mentioned it, but I'm not gonna read all the previous posts.

I think they could pull off an Oblivion SW game

Take WoW for example. That game is huge now, with three continents. You could cut the original two continents in half, and that would give you room for 5 very large planets. That is more than enough.

I also agree with the LOTR vs. SW fighting game using the SC engine. THat would just be bad ass.

Simple solution: Make multiple discs. Each disc has a couple planets full of encounters on them. You only have the option to travel to other planets if you purchase the other upgrade discs.

For example, you start off on Coruscant (having come from wherever you originally come from prior to the start of the game) and you're in the Imperial prison or Imperial academy (depending on your choices). You have to work your way through Coruscant's many levels of intrigue and adventure.

If you get an expansion disc, then the spaceports and smugglers suddenly have the option to take you to these new planets, and adventures on Coruscant will lead to the other planets, and vice-versa.

They could milk this for years, and it would be loved. . .

Such a great fighting game, but very underbalanced. Once I unlocked Vader I pwned everything and everyone regardless of difficulty. I LOVED IT!

I feel the same way. Has news been so light they can't add ANYTHING to the site? SuperHeroHype and Latino Review have several new articles up today.

QUINT, how dare you let me down. You're my hero on this site.

It's official. And it will be visually updated for the 360, taking advantage of the hardware. And it will be a hoot...playing each other over Xbox LIVE.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS SITE?????

This site has turned into an absolute joke. An entire 24 hours went by on a weekday and not a single update. I remember back when you could refresh this site six times a day and get new stories. Harry, it's clear you've moved on. You have other things going on in your life. But it was your youthful exhuberance that made this site great. Now we've been relegated to once a week visits from you discussing movies that have already been around for four months??? You need to do something if you want to save this site because lack of updates, extremely late scoops, and contributors that seem to have more going on outside of AICN, have made this site... well, uninteresting. At least come out and explain yourself. Tell everyone why the site doesn't report as much and stop posturing like you're fully operational. I'm about to give up on AICN and I think a lot of other people will too. If you're okay with mediocrity then fine, ignore this. If not, people who have been loyal to the site deserve to know why things are falling apart.

Was that teaser a fan creation? The announcer sounded kind of like "In a World" man, but also a bit like the overcompensating paramilitary martial arts guy from down the block. what's with City of Gods? Is that the final title?

I think it was an early teaser trailer for the movie. The final title is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. City of the Gods was one of the possible titles so they might have made teasers for all the neames.
vini77, that's what I thought (seeing that pic/news).

But it's a video game, so... (voice trails off) But still, it would be nice if you could chose an option, as to if the laser-sword cuts...or not. But really, it would (cue youthful talk) ...RULE...if it slices and dices, as it should. But then again, they're making it for teenagers, too. Right?
