Other sites with much better sources in the DVD/AV industry have heard from those in the know that Paramount is in fact exercising an "out" clause in their contract with HD-DVD. Universal is expected to be making the switch as well.

I think at this point, HD-DVD isn't even fighting it anymore. They're going to accept loss, and let the studios make the switch to the surviving format.

The reason we haven't seen the Cloverfield monster yet is because they never show it. A La Blair Witch.

It'd be an ironic "fuck you" to the fan boys following this like the second coming of MAN IN SUIT. (Which is still better btw.)

As for Cloverfield DO NOT WANT. This is the only movie that I have no interest in, will not support (all because of the lame marketing and vaugeness), but may actually download illegally just to spite the filmmakers.

Seriously, if a "Blair Witch" shaky cam treatment of a monster movie, set in NYC (Is that the only city we can destroy? even after 9/11? Why not some other city with taller buildings?) doesn't sound like the most shoddy, shitty, derivative idea to you, you need to be recalibrated.

B) the Blu camp will buy me out, maybe a disc exchange or some sht like that. Either way, I am not dropping 500 bucks on a Blu Ray when I got a HDDVD for 150. "Continue to support" HD-DVD is the same thing that Warners is doing... they will release all announced HD-DVD titles and then STOP MAKING ANY MORE mid-year. So having Paramount saying they will "continue to support" HD-DVD could simply mean "...until the date we can exercise our opt-out clause" - Which will not be during CES, but I'd wager will be around the same time Warner's "ceases support."

Paramount needs to hurry up and drop HD-DVD. This war's been over for a while... all HD-DVD is doing is making it that much harder for the consumers who are ready to move on. Several tech and financial sources > you say so.

Sorry, Harry. I love you, buddy, and I've been visiting your site for over ten years. But in this Paramount/HD-DVD thing you are wrong, wrong, wrong. Whereas your site relies on rumor and "spies", The Digital Bits doesn't print ANYTHING unless they have it from very reliable sources (even if they do have to remain anonymous sometimes). I've been reading The Bits as long as I've been readin Aint It Cool News, and -- totally my guess -- I'd say you are right maybe 50-60% of the time. The Bits gets it right 99% to 100% of the time. (Just one example, they've been saying FOR MONTHS that Blu-Ray was going to win this stupid, nearsited, greedy format war. And now it appears the writing is on the wall.) If The Digital Bits say "reliable sources" are telling them that both Paramount AND Universal are days or hours from announcing a jump to Blu-Ray, it's going to happen. Period. Mark my words. The format war is over. All that's left is the crying and screaming and whining from the HD-DVD camp.

Why would Paramount want to go neutral?
by LoneGun
Jan 8th, 2008
04:30:37 PM
They were neutral before they sided with HD-DVD. They claimed to have sided with HD-DVD because they thought that format had some kind of edge in the format war. It only makes sense that they will want to side with Blu-ray, now that Blu-ray has the obvious advantage. It's hard to see them going back to being neutral, and it's hard to imagine them staying with HD-DVD, under the latest circumstances.

The Paramount Deal=18 Months

04:50:17 PM
Paramount was paid $150 million to switch to HD-DVD and that agreement was only for 18 months. And don't go screaming at me, I'm not in this stupid war. The only HD programming my HD set receives is what I get through my HD cable box. I'm still with SD DVD until this shit storm is finally over, and even then I may be done for good. I'm just mad as hell at the studios for putting us through this goddamned format war. As a matter of fact, with the exception of a few obscure titles and of course, the Criterion disc of Lindsay Anderson's "This Sporting Life" later this month, I've stopped purchasing software all together. I'm nearly 40 and I've bled enough for my love of film. I just can't give anymore.

And maybe I am just old fashioned but I would hate for everything to go digital, what happens when the hard drive crashes? Can you imagine the people who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their movie collections being happy with that? A hard drive on a computer or an external hard drive only really lasts a few years. I hate when mine crashes and I loose any data I was foolish enough not to have backed up on CD or DVD. DVDs and CDs I get more than a decades worth of use out of and even then they are still going strong.

The writing is on the wall.. 70% of all movie libraries now heading to the blu-ray side only 30% of back catalog now possible on HD-DVD. Paramount when part of 150 million payment dropped Blu-ray so fast they had to set aside disks they had all ready produced and were expected to arrive in stores that next week. They are saying very generic statements like right now we support hd-dvd. I totally believe that once they exercise their escape clause and/or find a legal loophole we will get the new all Blu-ray announcement.

by yodasteve

The two things aren't mutually exclusive. Paramount can go back to Blu-Ray and continue with HD-DVD. They probably have an out in their contract so they aren't exclusive to HD-DVD if enough of the industry switched to Blu-Ray.

So harry is probalby right, Paramount is not dumping HD-DVD, but The Financial Times is probably right that Paramount is going to release titles on Blu-Ray too. -Steve

Buy both, you cheap fucks!
by Hercules
Jan 8th, 2008
05:42:29 PM
I bought a HD-DVD player for $100; that's like the cost of five or six DVDs, right? The Blu-ray players will cost the same in a year or two. The real expense in HD is the screen, which still runs a thousand or two per unit (but is compatible with all HD formats). If you've made that kind of investment in an HD screen, throw a few more bucks at some HD players already.

To the guy who says he'll have to replace all his HD-DVD movies with Blu-ray: Why the heck would you do that? You can connect both machines; your HDTV probably has loads of inputs. And if you somehow bought the only HDTV with one input, you can buy surely buy a router or an A/B switch for less than one disc would cost you. If Blu-ray wins the format war, your HD-DVD player won't magically evaporate. And in the meantime you can still buy Star Trek and Galactica and Cloverfield in HD.

People think because downloading HD movies now is tough
by shitstorm23
Jan 8th, 2008
05:48:55 PM
that it will always be tough. Wrong. There is this thing called technology and it moves fast. If you want your movie on a disc, burn it to one. If you want huge cases filled with your collection so you can port it around, burn them all to disc. The technology isn't THAT far away. Add in Verizon FiOS and faster cable downloads and this is just this year. There will be multi-terabyte set tops that allow storage or just On-Demand movies/shows/extras in HD. I have plenty of friends that torrent movies to their Ipods and burn them to discs to watch at home, and the quality is less than DVD, but still looks pretty damn good. People like HD, but only cinefiles are REALLY into the artifacting and all that shit. I'm going from HD-DVD back to standard because the difference isn't that big and I'm on a 50" Hitachi Plasma. I never got a chance to watch Planet Earth, but I bet that would look very cool as it was filmed specifically for HD, but everything else is close enough for me.

Downloads for some, little blue discs for others!

Why should I buy a player? Why would I marry this cow when I already get the milk without buying two different players for it? I wish I had all the money back from the VHS and DVD video collections I have that I never watch. Now, I push a couple of buttons and I watch an HD movie without leaving the house and without the clutter of movie collections. Starz & Cinemax both have quite a few HD movies up onDemand right now, at no additional charge to subscribers, not to mention all the HD movies that are on all the time. Those collections will continue to grow. Virtually every new movie I've watched on cable has been in HD. No download time at all. All the new releases are available PPV on HD and then they wind up in HD on the premium channels, and that isn't going to change. I'm pretty much done buying overpriced shiny coasters, and the stupid boxes that play them. The landfills of the future will thank you for not filling them up with yet another generation of planned obsolescence.

Blu-ray has nearly 75% of Hollywood locked up exclusively now, and has pretty much all of the blockbuster movies. Paramount doesn't even have Spielberg's titles under their exclusivity contract, so they don't have much to bargain with.

Retailers are already dumping HDDVD products like they were infected with AIDS and consumers are returning their holiday gifts because they've been obsoleted.

Yeah, I did the Comcast HD OnDemand for a while, too, but it got really expensive after the initial promotional deal was over. I figure it would have been about $100+/ month for all the bells and whistles, not counting pay-per-view HD, which was $6/movie. Compare that to approx. $17/ month for Netflix, which has both blu-ray and HD-DVD (for now, anyway). Bonus for OnDemand: you can record all programming to a DVD-R disc, etc., permanently via component output. (not in HD, though, but still very good quality) I got Casino Royale, 300, Apocalypto, 40 year old Virgin and countless others this way... ;-)

But adoption of said technology? Not necessarily so... How long ahas DSL internet been out? So why can't I get high speed DSL in my area???? Blu-Ray is advanced technology... but see how long it is for a fucking standard to get adopted? See, aside from technology there are these things called economics, cost, distrbution models, replacement programs, cable internet providers putting bandwidth caps because of people who download too much, and human beings other excamples of stupidity that get in the way! Digital Downloading is probably already ready technology wise with stuff like Internet 2, better fiber optics, internet through electricity etc. etc. Doesn't mean it's feasible for release due to other shitty circumstances... this format war is precisely an example of technology taking a shitty route for adoption... and most people are even arguing for the less superior technology because of costs even when it hinders them...

At least, it seems so from a business perspective. The sooner they switch to Blu-ray, the closer they'll be to cashing in on a market that's likely to boom once the format war ends. If they can opt out of their agreement with HD-DVD, why not do it sooner than later? As a matter of fact, this might be the perfect time to do it, while much of the tech media attention is on Warners. Who could blame Paramount for switching to Blu-ray, right now?

Good 1080P video is going to be a huge around 40 GB download. It's atleast 10 years down the line when quite a few people start having gigabit connections before digital movie downloads will start to be a viable way to watch HD movies. Optical Media for movies is here to stay. Cloverfield getting released on HD-DVD not a chance. There's only going to be Blu and DVD when Cloverfield gets a video release. Just got done watching Shoot'em Up on Blu. The detail was soul-shattering.

Well. . . Not really, but it DID get your attention, didn't it?

That's not to say I wouldn't fuck a midget. I would. Bridget the Midget (porn star) is actually kind of cute, and the little person on Boston Legal was definitely kind of hot, so there's something you all didn't know about and Oh Gawd why am I still talking?

My whole point here was to get your attention to say that we don't WANT to see the Cloverfield monster yet. Anybody who posts pictures of it is a colossal douchebag. Half of the fun of this one is the suspense. Don't kill it, like the idiots who designed half of the modern "Planet of the Apes" VHS/DVD cover art as Charleton Heston kneeling in front of the Statue of Liberty. Oh, yes-- Make the cover to the movie the BIG REVEAL, and pretend that there's nobody out there who isn't seeing it for the first time, you twats! Spoil the fucking movie on the box art? Are you STUPID? Why not just put a picture of Bruce Willis' bloody corpse on the cover of "The Sixth Sense"? Why not just put the half-and-half split-image face of Pitt and Norton on the cover of "Fight Club" with the subtitle, "They're the same dude!" FUCKERS!!!!

Oh, wait, I'm off on a tangent. That's what I get for thinking about fucking dwarfs and using cheap tricks to get peoples' attention... Wait... What was I saying?

Oh, yeah-- Blu-Ray won. I'm not buying a movie player that doesn't have the support of the majority of the major studios. That's just stupid. I liked HD-DVD more, but I'm going where the movies are-- I'm a movie fan, and I really don't care which one wins at this point, as long as I gets ta watch me sum moviez. Dig?

I'm telling you, this movie has had the BEST "security" of any movie ever. The 'net was plastered with pictures of Anakin all burned up a freakin' YEAR before ROTS. a year or two from now when we can download (legally) HD quality versions of movies directly to a hard drive hooked up to our 50" HD TVs for less than the cost of a useless, bulky disk and case- we will all look back and laugh about this. Really kids, hard copies of digital media is SO 2007.

...In Yuma? The violent, sadistic thief or the impotent failure? I don't know what film you guys saw. Great films don't have to be about pillars of moral virtue. In fact, it can be hard to find anything dramatic in the tale of ordinary goodness. I mean, Lawrence liked little boys and masochism and was a stubborn delusional asshole. Which is also why his achievements make for such fascinating cinema. I guess I liked and respected McCandliss(Spelling?) in Into The Wild, even if you can't really fully get behind someone that naive or short sighted. But at least he put his money where his mouth was and didn't have to "conquer" people to achieve his ends. For a better western with some actual heroes in it, you probally already checked out Open Range. Although I was no great fan of the film (others definately were this year) you could put forth Crowe in American Gangster. He stuck by his principles come thick or thin.

Remember what Ronald Reagan said? "Trust but verify". A lot of people SAY what the monster is, or what the movie is about but no one SHOWS or PROVES that they know. I actually don't want to know anything, I just find it interesting that for some odd reason, this movie is the best kept secret ever in the history of secrets. Hell, Harry saw the EPII in its entirety weeks/months before it was released, but no one has a freakin' picture of a monster from a low budget movie that comes out in two weeks?

I really could give two shits which format wins. My Tv has a built in DVD player, my PS3 plays DVDs but I don't watch them on it, my laptop plays DVDs, my wife's laptop plays DVDs, our home PC plays DVDs. Jeez, I've never counted them all before now... I've got 5 DVD-playable devices in my household. Ten years ago I was in college and still wasn't using the internet or email until I graduated and bought a WebTV in 1998. Movies are fun. They are nice to watch. But am I the only one who doesn't really care thet much about the format? I too cherish the VHS collection I amassed as a youngster in the 80s. Most of them don't work anymore, but still, there is some charm in watching a twenty-year old VHS of Wrath of Khan, warts and all. I love technology and the rapidly increasing pace thereof, don't get me wrong, I'm no Luddite. I guess just taking the longview, why get all worked up over HD or Blu-ray? Both will be laughably obsolete in 10 years, when we find ourselves arguing over Panasonic's 3l3ctric 3D Boogaloo format versus IBMicrosoft's "My NoseTV" Olfact-o-vision. Besides, life is short. I decided long ago to only watch Die Hard on Christmas Eve, new family tradition. I'll only re-watch a movie if it's really damn good. Don't waste time collecting movies you've already seen. Life is ridiculously too short for that.

...Take form over content. I would rather watch a great film on VHS, while many, many others on these talk backs could give two shits about the film itself, just the presentation. Witness them slavishly drooling over such masterpieces as Spider-Man 3, Yuma and Shoot Em Up, and how gloriously detailed they are. Sure, it would be NICE to see every film on a giant ass TV in crystal clear quality, but it would be far nicer to see them at the cinema. But in the end, it doesn't really matter. I just watched Pompoko and Manderlay on my shitty PC screen, and since the sound and picture are crips, clean and "Correct", the fact that they were great films had me completely forgetting that the blacks might have been marginally better on a bigger TV with a HD Disc. The improvement just isn't big enough to get me interested. And I still can't wait for downloads. Owning and storing physical media is just one giant pain in the ass, especially since the rewatch value isn't that high on most films. Of course, Australian broadband is ass play, sadly.

I don't understand these people who believe that soon all content will be digital and hard formats will die out. What planet do you people live on. Only a small amount of countries have the internet infrastructure to support that. Even in the developed countries only a small amount of countries could handle it. Heck here in Australia half the population can't even get broadband and are still on dialup. Even if everyone could get broadband here 99% of people would blow their download limits (yes we still have them) with one movie. Hard formats are here to stay for a long long time. Until every country has fibre to every house and an unlimited amount of international bandwidth hard formats are going nowhere.

I can't fucking buy hard media for music anymore. Its just a waste of time, money and space. I really hate that they haven't got downloaded movies yet. It would open up a HUGE library of choice, that is just clearly lacking in the retail and rental side of media. There is literally hundreds to thousands of movies I would like to watch, that are available all over the world, except at retail stores and video rental chains in Sydney. If I jump online, I can order them via mail from American sites, or even Aussie sites, but to be able to just click and receive like I do with music...Damn.

When 'Terminator 2' came out...I specifically avoided all spoilers. I don't watch a lot of "regular" (commercial) TV so I don't see many trailer/teaser commercials. Yes, my gf at the time thought I was mental in the theater with my eyes closed, hands over my ears, and making noise so I couldn't hear any of the trailer. My point is this: I was probably one of only a handful of people who had no idea whatsoever that Arnie was a good guy. I truly did not know that Robert Patrick was playing a "bad" terminator and not someone like the Reese character sent to help Conner; which apparently is a plot device in the story but given away in the first trailers making it redundant. So story-wise, John Conner, didn't know but the audience did as they saw the trailers. I, like John, also didn't know and that made it a much more enjoyable experience for me. That clinched the spoiler argument for me from that point forward.

Also...is this 'Del Toro expressing interest in directing the last Potter film' rumor true?

Harry I like the site, but can't say you've been very good when it comes to the technical and business dealings of the format war.

The "here's why..." portion of your HD-DVD choice column was a joke, and everyone who knows anything about the war knows it. The FT article states that Paramount does have an 'out' in their contract to allow them to go Blu-ray if Warner's goes Blu-ray. That is now the case. That is the 'fact' part of the article.

The 'speculation' part suggests Paramount will be dropping HD-DVD soon to go Blu-ray. Is that really that unreasonable? Where are your sources? What official statements? I own both formats so don't care too much one way or the other, I just want one victor. But the one-sided slant you give just seems out of left field, so you'll get no benefit of the doubt from me on this one. Paramount will at least announce support for both formats by the end of the month, if not drop HD-DVD all together.

Hercules... it seems that your answer to the format war, and all of your fans on this site, is to "Buy both, you cheap fucks!" Well, I have many reasons why I won't "buy both". And I'm NOT a "cheap fuck". (1) I don't want to reward those greedy bastards in Hollywood by putting money into the pockets of both the Blu-Ray "camp" and the HD-DVD "camp". I will NOT reward them for their greedy arrogance and unwillingness to compromise. (2) Unlike you, it seems, I don't have endless reams of cash. I'm trying to save up for my wedding in July and I recently went back to school to finish my degree. And spending $400-800 on two HD players is not something I can justify or truly afford right now. Yes, I have an HD (720p) digital projector, but it cost me nearly $1,000. I don't have money to burn on TWO HD players, at least one of which will be obsolete in a year or two at most. (3) All of you early adopters are getting to deal with the headaches of firmware updates, discs that are unplayable, etc., etc. Once the hardware manufacturers figure out what the hell they are doing, the prices on the players will be cheaper anyway. (4) So far, they haven't released anything I'm dying to buy on DVD, no "must haves" like the "Lord of the Rings" or "Star Wars" or Lawrence of Arabia". A few titles, "Blade Runner", "Planet Earth", "Heroes" & "Galactica" seasons one, have been tempting... but nothing to knock my socks off. The studios are clearly waiting for the format war to be over before bringing out the big guns. I'm not going to spend hundreds for a high def player so I can watch "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" and "Under Seige" in hi-def. Ughhhh.

"Home Media has confirmed that HBO is following Warner and New Line to Blu-ray exclusivity, as we expected. Things are still moving internally at Paramount and Universal. But at least for the moment, Paramount is denying that they're giving up on HD-DVD, and of course, sites like Ain't it Cool are latching on to that. So naturally, enthusiasts all over the Net are confused today. First, you'll notice neither studio is denying that they plan to go Blu - just that they're not giving up on HD-DVD at the moment. Second, look... we love the guys at AICN, including Harry. I mean that straight up, no bullshit. He's a good guy and he does a lot for movie fans online. But with all due respect, he's been a little bit behind the curve with regard to this high-def format war all along. So we'll leave it at that. I needn't remind any of you that before the holidays, Warner was still officially claiming that they were going to continue to support both high-def formats, and we all know how that turned out now. We remain convinced that both Paramount and Universal are moving towards announcing Blu-ray Disc support soon, and we have real reason for that belief, not the least of which is that our sources in this situation are second to none - a fact which should be readily obvious by now. Announcements could happen tomorrow, they could happen next week, they could happen next month. We'd be surprised if it took longer than a month or two. We're hearing that Universal may not announce until February at the earliest, as we're given to understand that their contract period with the HD-DVD camp expires at the end of January. So everyone needs to just take a deep breath and relax. We know that's hard, given how fast things have been moving this past week. Rest assured, Paramount and Universal are going Blu, but sorting out all the legal details and organizing the logistics takes time. The Warner move was apparently well planned, but Paramount and Universal have only just started that process. They may or may not continue releasing HD-DVDs for a time - we'll have to wait and see. But retailers are now seriously pressuring the studios to go Blu, and we'd be surprised if many mainstream stores still have HD-DVD hardware and software on their shelves come next Christmas. I suspect that Paramount especially wants to be able to announce a few actual titles when they announce their Blu-ray support, and it takes time to get all that ready. Keep in mind that things have been extremely chaotic within the home video industry this week. So everyone just take a deep breath and try to calm down, while we wait for things to play out."

I would never want the mods here censoring anything anyone says. In the end, it's up to the individual to be respectful and ignore those that aren't. I don't want to see TBs here moderated and I was furious when I got banned a while back for those "Indiana Jones and The..." fun fests. You're right, the freedom of posting in essentially the wild west of the internet is pretty damned fun. Viva randomness and whatnot. I just wish people would grow up a bit and act like adults but hey, if they don't it becomes the responsibility of everyone else to ignore em.

Don't be surprised if Fredo Manning gets a rematch against the New England William Defoes in a month... I'm pretty damned confident with how big blue has been playing lately.

Cloverfield and Harry's Reliability

No offense, but it's hard to take what you say about this film as anything but Bullshit. Remember when harry had "sources" telling him the title? WRONG. It's funny though because all the marketing they've spent on this thing and people (normal everyday folks) don't even know what the fuck the movie is about, let alone that there's a monster in it. I asked a few friends if they wanted to go see it when it comes out "Cloverfield, what the fuck is that even about? World War III" So although the marketing is getting the film exposure, there's no sense of what it's about. Terrible way to position the film if you ask me.

...that part of this may have to do with the Hobbit? If Sony owns MGM (partial rights), and Warners owns New Line (partial rights), this seems like the second stage of a behind the scenes deal. I mean, a couple weeks ago it is announced that Shaye has magically had a change of heart and has agreed to bring Jackson back for the prequel (obviously Jackson got his way with the books for Fellowship). This obviously means MGM and New Line reached some sort of agreement, right? Flash forward, mere days before CES, Warners announces they are going Blu-Ray even though the two highest selling Hi-def titles on Amazon at least were in HD-DVD?. The Hobbit is a valuable enough property to have had some kind of influence in this, and I wouldn't be shocked if Sony would be picking up much of the tab for the two picture project. Regardless, Blu-Ray in my opinion is a much better investment regardless and it's potential due to PS3 involvement has yet to be fully unleashed. Tough break, HD-DVD. There's always FUBU.

He was obviously courted by the HD DVD camp, tried to pimp it off as being the better format and implied it wasn't backwards compatible. Shady and unethical for an online "journalist".

Moriarty named his kid Toshiro Lucas McWeeny. And wait, Moriarty's last name is McWeeny. So we're done, right? He's doomed his own son. At least Moxie Crimefighter Gillette was born with some street cred.

I'm sorry for those of you that shelled out lots of $$$ for HD DVD stuff. It stinks. I was close to getting an HD DVD player about a year ago but something made me stop and wait (and I really wanted one). Not long after is when Blu-Ray began to sell more media and still I waited. I made the decision to go Blu in November. The writing was totally on the wall at that point.

I never said EVERYONE would be downloading HD content in two years. I said that WE would... US. I really doubt if the everyday Joe Sixpack even KNOWS there is an HD format "war" going on. In fact, Joe Sixpack doesn't even have an HD TV let alone care about HD home video. But most of us who konw/care enough about the subject to post in a talkback on a geek site do- and in two years many of us here will be on to the next thing. DVD just REALLY took hold in the last few years on the general public. Hell, Blockbuster was still carrying VHS up until, what, two, three years ago? So my point still remains- WE will look back on this in two years (okay okay... maybe three but still) and wonder what all the hubbub was about with this format war of hard copy media.

"Warner Bros.' decision last week to start making movies exclusively for Blu-ray players, rather than HD DVD, triggered an "out" clause in Paramount Pictures' contract with the HD DVD camp. An industry source said there was a significant possibility that Paramount would exercise that clause. It plans to decide within a month. Paramount officials said they would continue to support HD DVD, a format for displaying videos in higher quality whose backers include Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp. Universal Pictures, which has been a strong supporter from the beginning, issued no public statement on the matter here."

OK. This really is rumor, but hey what's a talkback for. Anyway a decent contact of mine in the retailing business at CES says Tosh is indeed thinking of going the HD DVD-R route if the remaining studios jump ship. Now children, this could be only a straw man they are circulating - for fairly obvious reasons to keep the remaining studios from jumping - and they may just give up on the whole thing. However, the claim is that the studio deals for Blu-ray do prevent it launching recorders outside Japan, so a studio-free Tosh would effectively have that end of the market to itself (notwithstanding that even I don't see how BD equipped laptops fit into that model, but I'm just relaying shit on). The other bit in there is that there would be a trade-in discount for existing HD DVD player owners on the recorder to reward their faith in the format. If you give this any credence at all, it has to lie in the fact that the recorder really is now Tosh's only hope of keeping its disc format alive (the retailers also now would only be interested in a high def recorder, and shelf space is the most precious commodity in the world). Meanwhile, the one thing dig bits apparently has spot on is that this should all be resolved in a month - all involved are apparently privately saying as much.

this is a big but if this movie makes serious moola, cloverfield two will be in offing. I normally dont post in this way but judging by one of the photos, it looks like beth could be a carrier for an alien. In the sequel if there is to be one and i am not sure if there will be. New york has been rebuilt by a wealthy mysterious benefactor(targuato?) and everything seems ok. Preganancy rate is soaring. but rather than give birth to normal children. the monsters third wave of terror begins, mini versions of the monster appear in NYC and cause havoc. they are all destroyed except one and that leads to the third movie. in that one they defeat the monster in the end. But knowing JJ there is a twist of somekind.

Months of Hype for a Godzilla movie. Oh, but wait, its Godzilla with human impregnating aquatic parasites attached, and best yet its all filmed with a Handicam. Is it really this easy to be considered a creative genius in Hollywood? Seriously...
Definitely looking forward to this...

...as mentioned in another post on Cloverfield, I once had a dream (I was 12 or 13 maybe) where the area I lived (outside of Miami) was being attacked by Godzilla or a similar giant 'monster'. I've always had a soft spot for Toho and the Godzilla films, cheesy man-in-suit or not but I gotta say...I was god damn terrified in the dream. First there's this geek-flip-out thing where you're brain tries to wrap itself around the notion of a giant animal wreaking havoc ("Holy shit! It's fucking Godzilla!!!")...and not just a 20 or 30 foot measly 'giant' but something *huge*, massive, hundreds of feet in height (figure approx 10 feet per story so a '30-40' story high beastie would be roughly 300-400 feet tall!). In my dream, the monster was maybe 5 or 10 miles away and surrounded by the military and a harsh firefight (at least that what it seemed like in the dream); but he towered over all and was easily seen. I remember feeling relieved in that selfish self-preservation way that he was so far away but I could plainly see him destroying everything. Feeling the ground shudder and hearing a deep rumbling from every direction. The write-ups Baltar did takes me back to that weird crazy-nightmare dream...that first person perspective of something so insane and improbable that you simultaneously are excited and terrified at the same time. A truly weird and vertigo-like paradoxic sensation. Also, I like the idea better about it not having the head of a whale (according to Baltar); a whale mutation doesn't really work for me as whales breath air (need to surface and thus be seen at some point) and are generally gentle creatures...even a mutated whale sounds like something to pity and care for...not fear.
But what do HARRY'S sources say...

Here is my take on what the Monster is...

It is the offspring of the original "little whale" refered to in the Slusho site...the person who went searching for the tastiest ingredient and was lost at sea. The ingredient was the "seed", "Sperm", whatever of these parasites...and its the ingestion or injection of this stuff which results in fertilization and a parasite growing in the host. She drank too much, or was bitten..out popped the monster...who lay alone under the sea for decades until her kid woke it up while following in his parents footsteps. Whaddya think?

No, you can't just copy cds and dvds and be ok if you don't sell them. One thing about copying stored media is that it typically has Digital Rights Management ("DRM") protection. It's a crime to break DRM, as per the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

Also, fair use defenses to copyright violation are a pretty subset of overall uses of copyrighted material, and their contours are pretty complex. The distinction doesn't have to do with whether or not you make money off the copying.

Daily Variety is also confirming the FT story

Harry, this HD-DVD post was really misguided. Just cause you wish something to be true doesn't make it so. I suggest a mea culpa, else more credibility be lost by you and your site.
so if i buy a cassette tape and copy it for backup...

like i did many years ago, im breaking the law? - its interesting to me that all these laws are in place and yet its made so easy to break them - what with software the right operating system and a fast optical drive - the average shmuck is left holding the bag - yet you still see a steady stream of mexican and chinese peddlers (im not xenophobic, just being honest) in the 42 st station selling bootlegs of current movies on any given day - ive even seen them walk into places (mcdonalds/pizza joints) selling their bootlegs - they never look too worried abiut getting slapped with fines

have you not seen the original unaltered gojira? or how about mothra vs godzilla (considered the best godzilla sequel by the by). check those out. there are plenty of godzilla movies around that are 100 times better than 90% of the crap that comes out in america today. back in the day, godzilla movies where made with heart and respect. emmerich had no respect for the character or the concept to begin with. fucking hack i say. i admit, there is a lot of cheese in the toho godzilla movies, but there is also a lot of good that goes unnoticed by 95% of american movie goers. just so ya know
