... and while not a masterpiece, it's really worth checking it out and 99% better than the american horror coming out lately. Still not as good as The Orphanage and a wild movie session. And yes, 28 Weeks Later is even better than "Days" unless you're smoking something illegal, and Snyder's Dawn of the Dead TOPS Romero's any day of the week, unless you're some kind of purist. Romero's best is still Night of the Living Dead, Dawn was really good but not really well directed and fell into laughable camp too many times.

Weeks, consistently is what it intends to be all through the movie... a scary-action flick with a subtext about a dysfunctional family and how blood ties can really fuck your life (and others). Days, as most Boyle's films - save Trainspotting - is drown by Danny Boyle's pretentiousness and arrogance. Fresnadillo, in exchange just do his work and put some of his personality. For more on Boyle's personality, just check out how Sunshine suffers the very same illness of 28 Days Later and has a maybe atroucious last 20 minutes.

yes, you are absolutely correct, the millions of people like me who paid to see the Dawn of the dead remake are responsible for the death of the zombie film over the last couple of decades. or, could it be that we like one film in particular, and the the muppets in charge of film production decide to remake the same film over and over again, so that we, the viewer, stop going to see that genre? I hate to burst your self righteous bubble, however, if you knew anything about culture and fillm in particular you would see that most genres have a cyclical popularity. At the moment, European, esp Spanish film is having a grand time releasing original, daring films year after year. This will end when the American studios get involved and waterdown everything to appeal to fatso, ill educated, middle americans, who canot be arsed getting out of their cars to go to an art cinema and see the real deal. This has happened with horror, gross-out comedy, torture porn, westerns, epics, pirate movies, and it will happen over and over again. All i am asking is that you take a step away from the bullshit tat that Hollywood is trying to force feed us - shrek the turd, spiderman 3, pirates of the exposition e.t.c. and go and see a film that is both exciting, startling and a joy to see. my opinions are my opinions. Worked better than Romero's. Romero's was more a film on the human psyche and a social critique, than horror. I was laughing more than anything. "Most" of the film is about the character's adaption to their environment. With a few horror scenes thrown in. While the remake is the other way around. I love Romero's Dawn of course, how couldn't I, just a slight observation. Seem fair?

20 minutes...but the first 15 minutes of Weeks were the only good part. Shitty acting, dialogue, script, god awful way to develop scenes, forced and not so subtle anti-Iraq war propaganda (I'm a liberal btw), everything was such a fuckin coincidence. Aside from a couple of nice killing scenes, it was a laugh. I sat there hoping for the movie to get better, but it never did. And if people wanna talk about pretentious...oh lord, was Weeks Later that. It looked like a Hype Williams video in some scenes. I did like the first 15 minutes, but after that, it was as if Michael Bay took over.

The disaster happened because of everyone who disobeyed orders, from the children to the sniper; the scientist, the chopper pilot and the dad (by going places he wasn't meant to). I think it showed the opposite. Along with some lines thrown in, they showed that martial law doesn't work. They basically made the military/occupiers (aside from a few characters) into controlling, egoists that didn't care about the people or their job. They showed them as one dimension oppressors. The movie is cool, actually. People that hate shaky cams, I tell you: though after seeing this film you won't change your mind about this matter, the camera-man Pablo Rosso (camara-man AND one of the two main characters, in the middle of the action when all the shit hits the fan) does a great job of capturing most of the action. Some of the shots are very tricky and pretty much non-stop without cuts or editing, so I guess the filmmakers had a shitload of planification to make when trying to film a continuos chase through a staircase (curious, it made me to remember similarly unedited scened in OldBoy and Tony Jaa's Tom Yuum Goong). All in all, it's hands down the best Spanish film this 2007 (at least the one I most enjoyed, with The Orphanage coming at a close second), and that's a pretty bold statement as I usually hate the films that are made here (I can't stand Almodovar's crap, sue me). But then again, the movie is going to be remade in the US, so your version will probably suck balls. It's so difficult to dub in English the damn film?? Trust me, use your magical favourite P2P downloader and check it out, it's worth it. Redfield OUT.

I just have to say my piece here. Mikeyone, I don’t have any problem with you liking whatever movie you think is better. That’s your opinion and that is fine. I don’t fault you for it. But, I have to put in my opinion because of I’m sick of some certain things. First of all the original Dawn is the only Dawn. It’s a masterpiece. Anyone who can’t see why was probably brought up on the 90’s brand of quick cut horror. Yes, the remake was a tight little ‘action’ movie, but it lost all of the meaning of the true Dawn. And whoever said it had “bad makeup” should be ashamed of themselves. Did you like Transformers, friend? Secondly; I want to talk a little bit about 28 Weeks Later. Now, I didn’t really like 28 Days Later, but it had some cool stuff in it. It was definitely worth seeing once. So when I heard about Weeks, I was thinking that I’d probably wait till it came out on one of the movie channels or something. However, then I started reading the reviews on this site and reading the talkbalks and seeing how much people loved it and how ‘scary’ and ‘intense’ it was. So that piqued my interest. I didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters and I was kind of bummed, but didn’t really care that much. Then I saw the DVD had come out and I picked it up. I couldn’t wait to see the supposedly infamous ‘farm scene’. Then it came, and it went, and I thought “wow, that wasn’t really cool. Haven’t seen shaky cam before’. Then the movie really started. Seemed like a cool kind of idea at first. Then they found their mom. Now this was a cool idea, and Robert Carlyle was pretty good at playing a coward. However, spoilers, then you see him turn into a rageaholic and do the old ‘thumbs in the eye’ trick that they used in the first one. From then on it went down hill. Not only was it not scary, but it was fucking boring. I mean really boring. I’ve always been a horror junkie but this didn’t even get me into it. I didn’t care about any of the characters, and I was never given a chance to. Then the movie just outright sucked from then on. We’ve seen zombies get killed by helicopters before, then the whole ‘silence of the lambs’ tunnel part was just stupid. Then the ending. Oh no, zombies are in Paris now! Who gives a shit. I know that they were going for a political film as well. And that works too (note: see Dawn of the Dead for how to do it right). This just lost all the subversive context and just turned into nothing. I know this is a really long rant, but I just hated that movie and I can’t understand how anyone thinks it’s better than the first one or even good.

First of all, all this vitriol towards remakes and sequels is getting old. They are going to happen no matter how much you bitch, and some are better than or at least comparible to the original. Not only that but they don't make the original disappear so what difference does it really make? Hollywood is a business, the bottom line to them is and will always be making money on whatever proven formulas they can work out. Thankfully we have the independant and foreign film scene to check out. I for one think that the remake of dawn of the dead is better then the original because the original is campy and cheesey as hell and that is the one thing I cannot stand in a movie. I give respect where it's due and Romero created one of my favorite sub genres, the zombie film, but his movies really show their age when compared with recent good offerings in the genre. He created it that doesnt make him the best in it. People need to ease up on the reviewer, I doubt he's a plant, the movie isnt even coming to the US so far as I know, but I have heard good things about rec from multiple sources and I am really looking forward to it, so thanks for the review and the rest of you pretentious assclowns can eat a bowl of dicks.

Battlefield Earth- if it was done as a comedy, and starred the Muppets, I might have enjoyed it more. Bad script/acting and the Director of Photography basically trying to mimic Star Wars scene transitions... ugh Van Helsing- They took what could have been an interesting premise and FUBAR'd it. Keep it simple, Van Helsing and Dracula. No Wolfman, no Frankenstein- It was like a bad Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein remake. Also, the hat just looked retarded. Ghost Rider- I actually haven't seen it. I know, I know "how can you have an opinion if you haven't seen it?" my only defense is if I see a piece of horseshit on the ground, I don't need to pick it up and taste it to know I won't like the taste. Sometimes you gotta go with your gut feeling on things. I've given up a lot of 2 hour incriments of my life to bad movies, i'm trying to cut back on that as I get older. As for the WickerMan remake, I was actually glad to see him get killed in the end.

Yet again, Kurzinski Valentine is showing what a raging idiot he is by siding with an obvious plant. Also how can some of you morons fail to comprehend that nobody is saying this guy's opinion is anything more than that, an opinion. That being said it is an opinion that causes him to lose ALL credibility for his subsequent review. Fortunately a better part of the people in this talkback, probably 75% of us, realize that. Only the usual imbeciles are (predictably) in disagreement. Only one post in favor of the remake of DoTD over the original even made any sense, and that was Chunker's very apt observation that the original Dawn of the Dead was less horror and more about character development, and I would add, action. Romero pretty much followed this trend with every one of his zombie movies thereafter. None of them are really "scary." So, as a horror movie, the remake of DoTD really succeeds. This is why it resonated with audiences. Getting back on topic, reading excerpts from this illiterate monkey's review in TB, I can see that the review is nothing more than poorly constructed English and appears to be fashioned by some kind of tagline generator. Glad I didn't waste my eyes on it, but I did miss a good laugh by stopping after reading the fifth entry of his preamble's list. I'm going to laugh my ass off when I see "PURE GENIUS, PURE TERROR, WHAT CINEMA WAS INVENTED FOR" on the DVD for [REC]. I will laugh not only at the nonsensical tagline, but the horrendously inept review that contained that tagline. Fucking plants.

Maybe I'll be banned from buying Fangoria for the rest of my natural life, but the only Romero zombie movie that did anything for me was NotLD. I watched his orignal Dawn and even Day, but they just seemed cheap and redundant. No matter how many times I am told by Romero fans what does and doesn't constitute horrific apocalyptic dread, slow moving zombies still aren't that scary. Sorry. But that opening scene from the remake? THAT'S what I want in a zombie movie. Sure, it had problems (the redhead, Mekhi Phifer, gun store Andy), but I would (and do) watch that movie over the original any day. Now, having said that, this reviewer does display signs of foliage, several obvious tells...of course you fucking love movies, you're sending a review to AICN. But if preferring the remake of DotD to the original is a sin worthy of excommunication from the world of horror geek, call me Martin Luther.

Yeah, I do agree with what you on that point. You can mix your high brow with your low brow, your popcorn movies with your pretentious and arrogant art house shite. It has no bearing on your credibility as a viewer or critic. Vern is a good example of this balance, but he likes things for what they are, be it straight to DVD cheese, or well made action movies. As long as you don't delude yourself like many fan boys do and start measuring the value of your movie with the wrong scale. It's all ok. The problem I have with this particular review is that the reviewer is clearly trying to use the preamble list to the effect of "describing his chops" and honestly, his opinion in my opinion (and many other's) is fucking worthless. It also doesn't help that his review is full of wannabe tag lines and poor English and grammar. On top of all of this, [REC] looks to be yet another in an endless string of obscure movies that AICN hypes up with reviews like this and the film turns out to be shit when you go see it. I'm torrenting it as we speak and I promise to eat my words if I am wrong. Honestly if he had an intelligent reason for liking the remake of DoTD more than the original (the only one I can think of is Chunker's) it wouldn't have been so bad. But you've gotta remember, saying that you like the remake over the original DoTD in the zombie flick world is comparable to saying you like the prequels over the original trilogy . It goes to show a lot about the worth of your opinion. And IMO is a bit sacrilege. And whoever said that DoTD INVENTED the Survival Horror genre is dead on. Obviously it is a film well worth its merits. But I didn't want to get into an argument over a film's merits in the first place, I just wanted to point out that those who are calling his opinion shit are well aware it is an opinion, that doesn't make his opinion any less misinformed though. On another note, it's bad enough that three out of five AICN reviews serve only to hype up such pedestrian and trite shit, but now the reviews aren't even any good themselves. I'd hate to read all the great reviews in Harry's mailbox that he undoubtedly turns down so he can further his agenda of working an AICN tag line from some undecipherable review onto the DVD box of another stunning piece of shit. I can't even remember the last little known movie referred by AICN I picked up on DVD (because it inevitably went straight there) that wasn't completely overhyped on top of being stunningly poor quality and/or boring. Can any of you?

i liked the remake over the original because it moved. it had pace. I liked it because it was relentless. it was believable. I liked it because the acting was better. sarah polley truly rocks in everything she does. i also liked it because I watched it on a hot summer night, with friends who also liked it. we had fun, together. I understand that the original is considered the better film by many, if not most viewers. I happen to prefer the remake. End of.

If I had a choice to watch the original DOTD or the remake, I'd choose the remake every time. Why? The first film is EXTREMELY dated, badly acted (though the remake isn't exactly Shakespeare either)has terrible pacing, is edited by a retarded marmoset and has ONE overall theme that film students have latched on to and think they're oh so clever for getting what Romero was trying to say. Whoop de do, you got the subtext, congratulations, doesn't mean the film comes close to matching the first. "It influenced so many people blah, blah, blah" Big deal, they took what they needed and made superior projects. The big problem with a lot of TB'ers is their lack of anything resembling a sense of reason. The reviewer says he likes ONE remake over the original, and yet someone labels him as advocating EVERY FUCKING REMAKE EVER!!! Get some perspective people, just because the original DOTD influenced many, doesn't mean it's in any way a superior movie to what follows it. Viewed today it is in fact woefully average, while Night holds up as a genuine classic. Decent review of a film I may well pick up at some point, all the assholes who jumped all over the guy, fuck you! He spelled out where he was coming from at the very start of the review, yet you just had to chime in and whine about how he is wrong. Guess what fucko's, he isn't wrong, the original DOTD is THE single most overrated movie in the history of cinema. Fact.

DOTD did not invent "Survival horror", i think you'll find that Night of the Living Dead managed that. Much, MUCH the better film than the sequel. Hell, give me Day of the Dead over Dawn - the acting is still shitty,(not as bad as Dawn, but close), and it's not as 'smart', but the pacing and editing doesn't make me want to stab my own eyes out with a fork. Oh, and the slapstick bullshit sucked a fat one too.

I saw it on the big screen when it came out. Ditto the remake, which I love even more because it's just better. See you can love them both. I have Day of the Dead on DVD and I like it quite a bit. I'm looking forward to seeing the remake that supposed to be out any day now, even though all the reviews say it's steaming pile of crap. They said the same thing about the dawn remake, and some of you still do. I suspect though that's a problem with open mindedness and holding a grudge. You can like both versions.

People complain about the pacing, but that's the shit I love about the original and what I think makes it unique. The horror doesn't come from zombies popping out scaring people, but from the sense of dread that these people have being stuck in the mall and not being able to do a thing about it. Those scenes where they sit around bored, where Flyboy tries to propose, those are the scenes that make the original something special. The remake is a good monster movie, but I found it pretty forgettable.

It was awesome, what the fuck are you people talking about? The original is good, but WEEKS increased the "holy shit" factor ten times. During the original I didn't feel half the tension I felt during the sequel. I think the first one tries to be "smarter" with all the military thing. It's good, I'm not saying it isn't, but the sequel is much more entertaining and scarier. (Oh and for once I'd like to read arguments from you guys, enough with this "WEEKS IS BETTER? The new DOTD had a few good moments, but it's hard to compare remakes sometimes because the more recent movie can look back with 20/20 hindsight. They usually have a better budget, technology, and distribution. Unfortunately they are often like tracing a picture. You get a good copy, but show you didn't have the talent to draw it in the first place. I do like remakes, but only if they bring something new to the mix that enhances the movie rather than take away from it. For me adding all the extra people in dawn messed with it' sense of isolation and doom. To me it was mainly flash, kudos on fast zombies though. If anyone wants to remake "The Blind Dead" and make them move quicker than a wacky wall walker they would do mankind a service.

these are getting incredibly insidious. it's like they are trying to impose an entirely new psychological profile for their base audience (also brainwash the kid demographic who surf the site), as well as to just reinforce people's egos who just have shitty taste in movies...all in the interest of being able to get away with cranking the dogshit knob to 11. plasticized cinema as an opiate unto the masses is no joke folksies, it's very big business and directors who eagerly fall in line with the studio noncreative bureaucrat dicks that rationale lead to the DEATH of CINEMA. hijacking the exploitative elements in order to try and produce numbers is only valid if there is artistic value to be found somewhere and frankly, in a lot of cases, there's not. at least that's how i had come to understand things throughout the course of my attachment to film as a human being. When we start seperating the distinction between between cinema as art and "movies as entertainment" to the point where they begin to do each other detriment then we are going to see an aggressiveness in consumer manipulation to the umpteenth degree based around the bovine psycholigical profile idealized in the "chest list" that kicks off this "review".

I disagree with you there, man. To me, all the stuff you feel as "disrespect for the characters" I feel as shocking and awful deaths. I mean, Michael Caine dies saying "pull my finger" in Children of Men and that's supposed to shock you, you have to hate that death. Even Clive Owen says "Tell me what's the reason of that?!" Same here. I take deaths that make me cringe over deaths I applaude any day of the week. The same thing goes for your complaint over "ripping the eye gauging scene"... I for one was extremely shocked with that whole scene. Not only the eye thing, but also the way Don is infected. I thought it was a very tight way to express both plot (the second outbreak) and character (the crime and punishment motif in Don's storyline). And speaking of mindless cruel infection, what do you make of the girl's father's infection of 28 days? Isn't THAT way more exploitative and cheap? And for all the mayhem and procedures done by the military, I don't know man, I totally bought those. It seemed believable to me, specially considering how fast everything went to hell. would you kickstart a review with a bunch of opinions as controverial as saying you prefer the remake of DOTD to the original? I mean, c'mon thats pretty much guaranteed to alienate a good segment of the readerbase before they actually get to the review. Beleguero is an underrated filmmaker = Los Sin Nombre (The Nameless) is great, and Darkness (at least before the Weinsteins assfucked it) is decent too - its let down by a terrible chunk of "scooby-doo" style exposition by the villain in the 3rd act, but has some really impressive visual shocks.

Can't say I get the attraction either, whatever about the merits of the first (Which was... "Ok"... until the military entered the picture), the second came across as fairly amateurish. I mean, the 2 kids are reunited with their father... so naturally they run away the next day, getting past the military... only to get re-captured just as they come across the infected mother... who doesn't get shot on sight despite clearly being infected. So of course the husband manages to sneak past same inept military & get infected by the wife... conveniently enough, all survivors have been herded & locked into a single basement, thus eliminating any possibility of rapid mass-infection (rolls eyes). Uggh, hard to bother going on. Suffice it to say much of the film attempts to be analogous to Iraq; repatriating the natives, Green Zone, soldiers not being able to tell the difference between civilians & terrorists (sorry, "infected"). Snore.
