seen an interview with them talking about the western as well. said they have been working on the script for 4.5 years and only got the backing for it b/c of No Country's box office take. They have 4 films in various stages listed on IMDB from 2008/9, so the western is probably #5 and around 2010.

face the new 3:10 is for the generation that thinks young guns and "i'll be your huckleberry" define westerns.

hell even in modern westerns, The Proposition, Open Range, and Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada are better than the 3:10 remake.

No Country is a better western than 3:10. There's nothing wrong with the new 3:10, its just for a different audience. More for the people that like things blowing up, than for people that love westerns.

But guess what, we both hated it. Well, maybe hate is a strong word, but we both found it completely trite, predictable, and yet utterly moronic. As much as I think Nathan Fillion is the man, his character made absolutely no sense, he falls head over heels for this waitress, but really is just a slimy cheater who likes to get it on while his wife is at home, yep what a loveable, lying, douche! Secondly the other plot points (the rich owner who takes care of the cute waitress, the frumpy waitress who falls for the stalking creepy dude, the pie contest) all of that was so cliche. How is it this movie is so well loved? Finally, that first encounter where Kerri and Nathan suddenly rushed into each other's arms and start macking like 9th grade summer camp lovers? Pathetic, so unsupported, so completely disengenuine, I felt like I was watching an episode of Desperate Housewives, it was goofy and silly.

And I swear, if he hadn't mentioned One Missed Call as a frontrunner for worst of '08, I was going to post it. Nowadays, if I see a ton of banner ads for some flick on the front page, I can almost guarantee it's going to be poop. One Missed Call, Poughkeepsie Tapes, yada yada yada.

Most Surprising, meaning movies I saw with no expectations of greatness and was surprised by how much I was entertained.

1)Stardust- A great fantasy story that entertains with interesting characters and plot, not a ton of CGI.

2)Children of Men- I was expecting Solyant Green but got a exciting Sci-Fi story with some of the better action scenes of the year, thats how you do shaky cam people.

3)Shooter- A weird combination of Rambo and the Bourne Identity, but it worked for me, I didn't think Mark Wahlberg could pull off the action hero thing, but he did it.

Most Disappointing, movies I went to go expecting them to live up to the hype but left the theater scratching my head wondering what went wrong.

1) Spiderman 3- Bloated and excessive. Too many characters, too many plot lines, just too much of everything.

2)Live Free or Die Hard- I could almost live with the PG-13 rating, but the movie had no flow, it was a series of action pieces that never felt like they fit together. I felt like I watching a kid play Counterstrike.

3) War- ok, I know I was one of the few people to actually see this movie, but I am a big fan of both Jason Statham and Jet Li, a win win situation. Wrong, actually the first half of the movie is almost watchable, but then there a plot twist about 3/4 the way through the film that is so jarring and movie breaking that people leaving the theater after the movie ended actually stopped in the hall outside and started a group discussion about what the fuck happened at the end of the movie.

And now he's Batman!

This is now really the end of HD-DVD, and more importantly, the end of the format wars.

However I use different things to guage what makes a good movie. Yes it is dystopian, dark, nihilistic, depressing, and scary, it is also technically brilliant, well directed and shot, with some incredible performances from some of my favourite actors.

From what I can gather though, you seem to think I'm looking at making my best of list thematically, and I wasn't. Otherwise I wouldn't throw Ratatouille, 300 and Bourne in with each other, because they're all vastly different but equally enjoyable in different ways. I also think Eraserhead, the Deer Hunter, and Requiem for a Dream are great movies too for different reasons, they are also dystopian, dark depressing, etc. etc.. Just saying.

Let's hope Ironman and the Incredible Hulk can redeem the recent Marvel flops.

Here's an example. I worked for an Oscar winner a few years ago, and was brought along to many AMPAS screenings. Specifically, I saw "City of God" a year before everybody else in this country. The group that judged "City of God" watched it because it was Brazil's nomination, but it never actually became one of the top five to make it into the category that year. (Kind of a controversy, actually, considering what happened next:) The next year, it was finally released generally across the country, and with the help of many critics--Ebert gets a big shout-out for helping this along--it ended up being nominated for four major Oscars (including Best Screenplay and Best Director) when judged as an American release, not as a foreign release. "The Lives of Others" was a 2007 release as far as the U.S. is concerned. It had a limited release in early February, so Capone is right to put it on his list.

The necessary qualification is only, ONLY, that it is released in its country of origin in an Academy year, not stateside. This is not an argument. Any US screening in 2006 was unofficial, like the aforementioned club or a festival or someplace like The Castro or The Egyptian.
