Thank ya Capone. Nice detailed list. Our lists agree on most everything except Rescue Dawn. It seemed way too silly to me. And homeboy carried his Charlie Manson work into the POW camp, which was kinda frustrating. Herzog should have just let him study (as he requested), rather than throwing him into the role.
Miller's Crossing

I'll never understand it, why do people always put Fargo ahead of Miller's Crossing on their Coen lists? To my mind (although I agree No Country is the best) there's no question that Miller's Crossing comes next, none at all. I don't understand what I'm missing that everyone else seems to list other ones ahead of it. It just doesn't even occur to me, and I'm confused and stupefied by it.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is really outstanding, while EASTERN PROMISES is an overrated piece of crap. Clichéd characters and situations, mediocre acting, a real bad story structure and horrible plot developments. I am baffled by the love this movie gets.
NO COUNTRY & CHARLIE WILSON
by Mullah Omar
Jan 4th, 2008
02:51:48 AM
...are the two most disappointing films of the year for me.

NO COUNTRY was a poor adaptation of a superior book. I've heard many people call this a character study, but most of the story's best characterization was cut out of the film. Bell and Chigurh are nowhere near as well developed as they are in the book, and it hurts the overall narrative. I welcome unorthodox endings, but the Coens didn't lay the groundwork that the book did in making it feel deserved. It's too bad, because filming everything in the book as it was written wouldn't have added much more to the total runtime of the film; there was no reason for the Coens to change anything at all.

CHARLIE WILSON *could* have been a classic satire if it had any balls. Since a lot of the film was apparently cut from the cinematic release due to legal threats, maybe it actually *is* a classic - maybe we'll finally know for sure when the DVD comes out. But aside from the film being self-censored, there are other big problems here. Tom Hanks underplays what should have been an over-the-top role; we hear so much about Charlie Wilson being a wild man, but we never really see it onscreen, which is a shame because I was hoping for Hanks to cut loose for once. Hanks and Julia Roberts also both have shifting accents that are just embarrassing. Only Phillip Seymour Hoffman seems to be doing anything with his role - he carries an otherwise bland film. Imagine this film without Hoffman's cranky performance and you'd have a Lifetime Movie of the Week with a few tits in it. This film was a dog with no bite or bark.

I rented it, thinking it couldn't be that bad, that Murphy would have to have some moments that were funny. Nope. It was just as bad as its billing. Brian Robbins has never made a good film and should be getting the Uwe Boll treatment. I do find one thing kind of interesting though: I thought it was odd how critics pointed out en masse how mean spirited and cruel the film was to overweight black women. I didn't find it mean because there isn't a real woman being mocked, everybody knows it's Murphy in a fat suit. These were the same critics that heaped praise on Borat, a film that made fun of and ridiculed real people.

To Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hours Eddie? One of the most unfunny movies I have ever seen. Compared to this, Cannibal Holocaust is a laugh riot.

Norbit is a good movie. Most people look at the poster or commercials and cringe at the thought of Eddie Murphy in another fat suit, but the film was much more than that. It was Eddie's farewell to the make-up films that help define his comic persona. I'm sorry but Eddie's "Mr. Wong" character was funnier than half the "comedies' that came out last year. At least it wasn't a sequel or a remake. Eddie's a good actor. That's that.

One of the nice things about these lists is - you find things you didn't know about. I haven't heard about Werner Herzog doing a VietNam war movie, and that one was shot in fall of '05 and then it came out in mid 07 and ends on the top ten list of Mr. Capone. So I check out the database if its available in Germany - where Werner and I come from - and there is nothing. Not even a release date. Hum, then I think it probably must be awful, so checkout the trailer. Which is a reasonable as you would expect it trailer. True story and so on, but nothing over the top and Christian Bale looks alright and the production values seem to be alright. So I dig deeper in the database and it has the results for U.S. and U.K. The movie cost an estimated 10 mio $ (which I find a low figure) and it got back something like 5 mio $. That's a failure I would think. Someone must have a problem now, especially if its not distributed elsewhere (besides the Netherlands). So I check out the production company - Gibraltar. And thats when its becoming realy odd. IMDB has a typo on the link, which is fun, but the guy who wrote the website promotion wrote Synapsis instead of Synopsis, which is stupid. You should take the time and read the bios of the producers and owners of this certain production company Gibraltar Films. One is claiming to have night clubs all over and the other one played pro-basketball. "Let's make a movie, shall we?" So the point of my post is: Oddest production of the year? and how did Werner get into this? I would like to see the film, but should I buy it, or wait for cable?

What I dont understandand about AICN

Is the sight hypes up about and geeks the shit out of blockbuster films such as Transformers, Rocky Balboa, Pirates, Spiderman, harry Potter, snakes on a plane etc. Then totally ignore them in their ARTY top 50. I've been an AICN reader for years and I see the same pattern. I remember how Harry loved Attack of the Clones and then totally ignored it in his list. Then revenge of the Sith. SO what about this years blockbusters that AICN geeked out on? Spiderman 3 for instance, not the greatest film but it sure had entertainment factor on the high end of the scale and harry dug it (apart from the venom). Pirates of the Caribeean was a major major dissapointment so I will move on! Transformers was geeked to high kingdom (I personally just thought it was fun but no geeky love for it). How about Rocky? I just dont understand why this site is about COOL not ART oscar calibre films, and to be fair most of it is but that geekness and COOL factor never reflected in the best of the year lists. I dont knock most of the best of list either but I find it somewhat hypocritical. How about a geeky top 10 then, films that were enormous fun and rewatchable for the fun factor.

It's barely even a movie, it's more a string of music videos, with what plot there is existing solely to drive us to the next song. And yes, the inclusion of Bono and the genius Eddie Izzard were well beyond unnecessary. But for what it was, I rather enjoyed it. It's far from the worst film of the year. And we've been listening to the soundtrack at home quite a bit, so I've gotta disagree on that point as well.

Says a lot that you don't mention it all on either list Mori. Guess the AICN crew are still trying to live down how you all ran interferance for Bay the last two years, telling us all it didn't matter if the movie was good or not, long as the CGI was good. I saw Norbit. It was funny. If the Eddie Murphy/Master of Disguise thing has worn old on you fine, but stop bitching about it. People have become so stupid now that if they see Eddie Murphy in a rubber mask they automatically say, "It's the worst film of all time!" Even without having seen it. Michael Myers does the same thing and gets a pass? Talk about bullshit opinions from bullshit people.

For what it was - a sick twisted homage to the Hannibal character. Weirdly romantic and disgusting at the same time. Red Dragon was a non-event and Hannibal Rising wasn't even a blip on the radar. It didn't have an ounce of interest from the audience. Dull, weak, and completely forgettable. At least Hannibal had the icky brain eating scene that left the audience squirming in their seats (ho ho).

Children of Men was last year's best film, apart from being tight as shit, intelligent, brutal, it was groundbreaking and filmed in a godlike manner. no Country for Old men was a great film,w ell directed, well written, tense, just a damn good movie, but everyone says it's number 1. but is it groundbreaking? No. this movie doesn't look anything new. Assassination of Jesse James was a better movie.

Gotta agree on No Country and There Will Be Blood, i'm torn on which is the best - though my leaning is Blood. Also agree Lake Of Fire is amazing (although I saw it in October 2006 so wouldn't count it as this year). However there are a lot worse films than Across the Universe: Halloween, Saw 4, Captivity, Pirates 3, for instance. Also can't agree on Eastern Promises and Rescue Dawn, both solid, good films but amongst the best of the year? Not a chance. Still, interesting list.

I think booth movies are groundbreaking in their own way. Children Of Men is technical masterpiece and No Country has an interesting approach to storytelling, though I haven't seen Jesse James so I cant say which one is better. What am I wandering is if No Country would be even better with music. It's quite important to every other Coen movie... Can you imagine Fargo without music?...of course you can, but would it be better movie?
What? Hannibal Rising was excellent!

It could've easily been a WB teen slasher, instead it was a steadied art film, full of poetic subtlety. The use of Humperdink's Hansel & Gretel theme is chilling, and seeing young Hannibal listening to the Goldberg Variations in his garret as he prepares to remember his tormentors was fantastic.

Are you serious? The argument you make for Rescue Dawn is frankly pretty weak. At best it's a good film and an ok one from the great Werner Herzog. But Diving Bell is a work of sheer brilliance. In every facet, from direction, script, performance, and especially camera work, the Diving Bell is a far more accomplished and entertaining film than Rescue Dawn. Just because Rescue Dawn has 'Batman' as the lead, doesn't make it a top ten.

Ah fuck! This is what happens when I travel without my laptop. When I first pulled this list together it was on a flight from Colorado to Chicago, and I had a hard copy of a list of every movie I'd seen in 2007. I went through the list and checked off everything I wanted to include in my Best of the Year lists, and then compiled my Top 50 from that. In my original, hand-written Top 10 list, I had THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD tied with 3:10 TO YUMA at the Number 9 spot. But somehow in the transition from paper to computer, JESSE JAMES got lost. My apologies. I think my original review of the film (http://www.aintitcool.com/nod e/34335) makes it very clear how much I admired this movie. And my point it pairing it with YUMA was to say how thrilled I was that filmmakers were still finding new and interesting ways to tell stories of the West without relying on all the familiar trappings of classic (and not-to-classic) Westerns. In all the years I've been doing these lists, I guess I was bound to accidentally skip something truly worthy. Hopefully this corrects my glorified typo.

I think Lisa Schwarzbaum has this same list. Is it that Capone is not putting stuff from festivals and just giving us a wide release best of list? Because even though it makes me mad when Harry and CO have a best of list and its full of movies that come out next year, or was only shown at Harry's house at 2AM and was part Hallucination. I was hopeing to find out about some cool new movie that I never heard of, because I usually agree with Capones take on a film.

the new 3:10 is for the younger generation that has never heard of randolph scott, alan ladd, van heflin, glenn ford, etc.

theres a another generation out there that thinks westerns started with sergio. and don't even know that their best westerns of all time are nothing more than stolen kurosawa remakes. (yes their were lawsuits).

face the new 3:10 is for the generation that thinks young guns and "i'll be your huckleberry" define westerns.

hell even in modern westerns, The Proposition, Open Range, and Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada are better than the 3:10 remake.

No Country is a better western than 3:10. There's nothing wrong with the new 3:10, its just for a different audience. More for the people that like things blowing up, than for people that love westerns.

Spider-Man 3 - worst movie of 2007
by deucefilms
Jan 4th, 2008
09:55:32 AM
Maybe there were movies that felt more lame or missed the mark more (like Blades of Glory), but Spider-Man 3 was an enormously disappointing piece of crap, especially considering the huge budget it had. How about, out of the $200 million you spend on an event picture, take a million of it and hire a decent screenwriter? Hopefully a different director and different writers can pump some life back into that series. I wouldn't say that Spider-Man 3 was as epic a disappointment as something like Phantom Menace, but I'd say it was the biggest disappointment of 2007. I'm sure, though, that the studio looks at the hundreds of millions of dollars it raked in and could care less how stupid the movie was and how disappointed audiences were by it.
Herzog and No Country

I enjoyed No Country a lot but come on Charlie Meadows > Anton Chigurh and terms of scary bad guys in a Coen Films. Plus Javier Bardem just does not come off as a physco pathic, smart, determined killer. And trust me folks I hang out with a bunch of physcopathic killers. But whatever everyone make up for not really caring about the Coens early work. I would like to see them do a Sci-Fi movie. As for Herzog, man I've studied his films in my generic film class and his movies are sooo tedious to watch. I am not totally sure his accolades as a movie director are totally deserved, his movies just fucking don't do anything. If anything his movies are just potryals of real life? His documentaries are a different thing, clearly his strong point, which makes sense the man must have a PHD in patience. Haven't seen his Nasferatu though?

Don't believe the hype. Don't. Don't. Don't believe the hype! This year confirms my feeling that studios pay critics to like their films. Except Ebert (probably because he is old and crazy), I don't always agree with him, but he doesn't always swing the way everyone else does about movies. Seriously name one critic who didn't like No Country, Juno, or George Clooney. Clooney is the only actor I can't take his personal life away from his movies. Other actors I can forgive for being a fuck up in real life. But his hollier then thou attitude just makes me wish Return of the Killer Tomatoes! hadn't been the break out hit it was.

Alot of people here and other places consciously attempt to not put transformers on their list as to not be ridiculed for some reason. even if it was probably the most fun movie of the year, which is the reason we all watched movies in the first place. Or did you all start watching movies at 3 years old to study character pieces. Fuck this. It's all lost with film geek mentallity. I want fun, it's why I go to the movies. transformers was fun with great scenes and more rewatchable than most movies mentioned. But I'll name There Will Be Blood as best movie of 2007 to make sure everyone thinks i'm smart because if people say i'm a loser it will hurt my feelings. Suck a dick.

I remember Harry calling it oh so sweet, and awesome! I see it here on Capone's list as well, so I rented it for my wife as she was feeling neglected in my movie choosing lately.

But guess what, we both hated it. Well, maybe hate is a strong word, but we both found it completely trite, predictable, and yet utterly moronic. As much as I think Nathan Fillion is the man, his character made absolutely no sense, he falls head over heels for this waitress, but really is just a slimy cheater who likes to get it on while his wife is at home, yep what a loveable, lying, douche! Secondly the other plot points (the rich owner who takes care of the cute waitress, the frumpy waitress who falls for the stalking creepy dude, the pie contest) all of that was so cliche. How is it this movie is so well loved? Finally, that first encounter where Kerri and Nathan suddenly rushed into each other's arms and start macking like 9th grade summer camp lovers? Pathetic, so unsupported, so completely disengenuine, I felt like I was watching an episode of Desperate Housewives, it was goofy and silly.

Is if you made like a serpeate list of your top ten geek films this year. Yeah I can see how you can say No Country is the best blah blah, we know that we don't care. We are all geeks and care about geek films. Some people have said it earlier that this site talks about these geek films and then comes best of time everyone all of the sudden grows a pretty vagina and becomes Mark McGrath's co host. Show some gravitas and make your best of list a little more original. I don't care if the movies are still the same, but let us know what movie you will probably see 100 times before you die. Something a little different. But telling us No Country, is a intense violent movie, and TWBB is the new Unicron, or saying Juno is the funniest movie of the year because you drink Starbucks and wear A and Finch and think quirky people are interesting on film but would never hang with them in high school. That and girls like Juno are just fucking bitches. Is like telling us the wire is the best show on tv right now (at least the wire hasn't become a trendy thing to watch). Is just frustrating. We look to you for guidence and geek approval.

Some are mistaking "disappointing" for "bad." The fact is, films like Spidey 3 and Transformers may have been (to some) disappointing, but not bad. Films like Skinwalkers and the aforementioned Epic Movie are bad, flat out.

And I swear, if he hadn't mentioned One Missed Call as a frontrunner for worst of '08, I was going to post it. Nowadays, if I see a ton of banner ads for some flick on the front page, I can almost guarantee it's going to be poop. One Missed Call, Poughkeepsie Tapes, yada yada yada.

Most suprising/disappointing..

10:28:12 AM
I haven't seen many of the movies listed so far, so I won't make a best or worst list. I will make a most surprising / most disappointing movies I have seen in 2007.

Most Surprising, meaning movies I saw with no expectations of greatness and was surprised by how much I was entertained.

1)Stardust- A great fantasy story that entertains with interesting characters and plot, not a ton of CGI.

2)Children of Men- I was expecting Solyant Green but got a exciting Sci-Fi story with some of the better action scenes of the year, thats how you do shaky cam people.

3)Shooter- A weird combination of Rambo and the Bourne Identity, but it worked for me, I didn't think Mark Wahlberg could pull off the action hero thing, but he did it.

Most Disappointing, movies I went to go expecting them to live up to the hype but left the theater scratching my head wondering what went wrong.

1) Spiderman 3- Bloated and excessive. Too many characters, too many plot lines, just too much of everything.

2)Live Free or Die Hard- I could almost live with the PG-13 rating, but the movie had no flow, it was a series of action pieces that never felt like they fit together. I felt like I watching a kid play Counterstrike.

3) War- ok, I know I was one of the few people to actually see this movie, but I am a big fan of both Jason Statham and Jet Li, a win win situation. Wrong, actually the first half of the movie is almost watchable, but then there a plot twist about 3/4 the way through the film that is so jarring and movie breaking that people leaving the theater after the movie ended actually stopped in the hall outside and started a group discussion about what the fuck happened at the end of the movie.

Directors
by Series7
Jan 4th, 2008
10:46:52 AM
messi said something about Children of Men being groundbreaking while No Country was just a solid movie. Totally agree with that. A director doing something totally different then what he has done in the past, and like nothing we have seen before. Though i felt he was let down by some of his lead actor (Clive I thought he was going to be the next awesome actor but he has become very wooden in everything he does now, luckily there is Christian Bale)that is a disscussion for last year. But I hate how TWBB is always getting toped by No Country. No Country fits right in with the Coens history, TWBB shows how diverse he is. Plus I feel Sunshine should be much higher, that movie is a theatrical experience. I feel bad for anyone who has to wait to see this for DVD because its awwwness is going to be lost greatly on a small screen. Too bad Transformers/Priates/Spidy probably got all the awards given out to special effects movies on lock down, if not Transformers alone. Sunshine was the best summer blockbuster(even though it was released like an independent film). Knocked Up for worst movie of the year. Call me a sourpuss, but not laughing for two hours (unless thats the joke?) does not a comedy make. Runner up -> War, caught that last night and thought maybe the reviewers were just hating, but man that movie came out about 3 years too early to be staright to DVD. If Li and Statham keep makeing movies of this caliber they will soon become the next Segal and Van Damn. Plus wasn't this movie called The Corruptor a couple of years ago?

Sure, the folks around here spend most of their time pimping the big budget, sci-fi summer blockbusters, but if you pay attention to all of the stories you'd see that they movies like No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood have been praised a fair bit as well. So what if you're bored by those choices? I personally haven't seen most of the big award season contenders, either because I just missed them or because they haven't come to my area yet. That said, I did see No Country and it was the best movie I saw this year. I don't care if it's been said. It can't be said enough. It's a damn fine film.

That said, most of the rest of my top ten list would be taken up by movies like Ratatouille and Hot Fuzz, but that's just because those are the types of movies I tend to see in theaters.

And Series7, are you actually saying that it would be a bad thing if people actually started to pay attention to the Wire? Quality is quality. Just because something is being praised left and right doesn't automatically invalidate that opinion. I arrived late to the party regarding the Wire, and I subscribed to HBO just to watch the upcoming season. I'd love to be able to talk to my friends about it, but I'm the only person I know who's seen it. Just because the masses love American Idol doesn't mean they're incapable of liking something that's actually quality work.
3:10 To Yuma (remake)
by IAmLegolas
Jan 4th, 2008
11:27:01 AM
Maybe it's because I was starved for a new western, and I admit I can be blinded by my love for Christian Bale & Russell Crowe as actors, but I thought 3:10 TO YUMA was fucking awesome, and not something to be thrown in with the likes of TOMBSTONE or YOUNG GUNS, maybe a little below UNFORGIVEN? I mean it's not a classic for the ages, but it's worthy of being called a good western movie. And yes I love Sergio Leone (who's only 'rip off' of Kurosawa was "A Fist Full Of Dollars", he made at least 3 more great Westerns after that), but also Sam Peckinpah... John Ford... Clint Eastwood... HBO's DEADWOOD.... THE PROPOSITION.... so I'm no newbie to the genre. Looking forward to seeing THE OUTLAW JESSE JAMES on DVD as I missed it in the theater.

Seriously! This movie is entirely overrated. Only the Baltimore Sun reviewer really got it right. The dialogue was so heavy-handed I could have left the theater after the first 15 minutes. Thankfully, my girlfriend and I had snuck into the auditorium after seeing Sweeny Todd. Had I paid $10 to see Juno be clever(!) and quirky(!) and hip(!) and sardonic(!) for an hour and a half, I would have had deep regrets. The movie was tolerable about 3/4's in, but honestly, let's not all succumb to the hype machine. This movie is flawed.

was the ultimate tribute to western movies. Why you people try to say other wise I do not understand. 3:10 can't be because its a remake. If anything its the modernization of Western's. I want someone to hand me a copy of all those documentaries though. Docs have gotten so good as of recent, because movies have pulled away from touchy subjects as of recent (I guess you could say Charlie Wilsons war is kind of a touchy subject?). And Dijonase24 yeah I haven't been able to get into the wire because I don't have HBO I tried watching it on BET but they didn't play it in order, and i hate how HBO pawns off there old stuff on shitty channels, with edits. The point I was trying to make is that like not many people watch the wire but a lot of people on this site do and we know its good so stop telling us shit we know. Plus like its one thing for people to watch good things, but when people go see Juno they all of the sudden think they are some movie fan and know so much about movies because they saw what they thought is this small indie movie. Also I had a friend this year who work in the movies and pretty much I used to tell him what movies to watch, but now since he sees movies before me he is all upitty about movies. Yet I ask him about privous works and he knows nothing about them. He was telling me how great No Man was, but he'd never heard of any Coen work pre Fargo. Nor had he seen Fargo. eh whatever like what you want. Fuck I enjoyed the shit out of TMNT, much better then Transformers. I say fight scene of the year is Leo vs. Raf.

Also Live of Others, I must have fucking missed the boat totally on this one. But once they got to the town where the train was the whole thing just got stupid. And not awesome stupid like amazing trailer for that new Rambo feature that I'm dying to see. I just mean stupid stupid.

But I loved everything up until that point. I just couldn't believe those guys sat there and looked out the window as the bandits handed out money to anybody who would join their posse and kill the good guys. I'd've gunned all of Crowe's posse down right then, but maybe I'm too sensitive about seeing people contract my murder. And why did Crowe run for the train with Bale for a few minutes and then suddenly decide to be uncooperative? And I got that Bale didn't want his son to think he was a coward anymore, mission accomplished, he came out as more of an idiot and dead than a coward at the end. I also could've done without Luke Wilson showing up, but at least he shared his screen time with a monkey.

I love Unforgiven and all, but Once Upon a Time in the West is the better "tribute" to Westerns, while Unforgiven is the best bookend to Westerns. OUATITW brought all the elements of Westerns together and is actually assembled out of lines from other Westerns. And it ends with Charles Bronsan shoving a harmonica down Henry Fonda's thoat. That's how I roll.

(SPOILERS AHOY) I thought it was decent, but certainly not worthy of the third spot on a top ten list. The weak, impetuous son that an honorable man has to keep cleaning up after was done better in Road to Perdition. And, to me, the big revelation that Viggo was a cop kind of deflated everything that came before it. The most interesting thing about the movie was the crisis of conscience of someone who'd been a criminal all his life. Take that away and you're left with an undercover cop simply doing his job. In other words, you're left with The Departed, Donnie Brasco and dozens of other "cops who are in too deep" movies. Sure, the bathhouse scene was amazing. But you can't judge a movie by one scene. If you could, Hot Rod would've been the best movie of the year. "Cool beans".

Continue to be baffled by the love of Eastern Promises. Don't get me wrong, its not BAD. It's just not very good. It's a pretty generic crime thriller with a top notch cast who don't have much to do. If we are going to throw in a crime film, why not Gone Baby Gone. Not great either, but a little more interesting. I'm not baffled by the inclusion of 3:10 To Yuma however, (the worst major release film I saw this year) it just proves that the rest of humanity are dim witted, slack jawed slobs.

This site pimped that movie pretty hard and when I finally see it? Underwhelming in every way. Yeah, the kills are gruesome and old school fun. But the movie is stupid and lacks a damn ending. Once again the "next big thing in horror" turns out to be a terrible waste. My faves of the year were Stardust, Waitress, 300, Pan's Labyrinth, Blood Diamond, Children of Men, Sweeney Todd, Zodiac, Rocky Balboa, and 28 Weeks Later. I know not all those movies came out this year, but I saw them for the first time this year. I tend to avoid going to the theater nowadays so most movies I wait until DVD. Spider-man 3 was utter crap. It wasn't just a disappointing movie. It was a shit movie. It almost made X3 look competent. Obviously Michael Chabon was integral to the strength of Spidey 2, they should have got him back.

Fuckin' Terrible, what is with all the love for it around here? Nostalgia? I know a lot of us weren't around for those orginal grindhouse films (myself included, I'm 24) but deathproof to me was utter shit, barely watchable until the car chase and while technically very good, it was still stupid. Like half that movie is eight chicks (4 in one scene and all gross, 4 in another scene and thankfully hot) talking about bullshit. Planet terror I enjoyed but was definitely not blown away by it. So what's with the grindhouse love? It's probably just that I hate camp and they were pretty campy...

What a joke of a movie that was. Joseph Gordon Levitt is a promising actor but The Lookout was just embarassing. I agree that critics often unfairly dismiss genre films, but I don't respect anyone that would put Shoot Em Up on a best of 07 list. To even suggest that it's better than anything in Capone's top 10 (which looks fairly different than mine) is idiocy. Yeah yeah, I know, personal preference and all that junk. Let people pick their 'favorites', it's all subjective and there is no 'best'. Honestly though, you are simply wrong if you believe that.

And I don't see how Hot Fuzz is sooo amazing.. it had its moment but none of the jokes were that funny, nothing subtle or dark about it at all. Spider Man 3 was the absolute movie of the year for me. I went in with minimal expectations (Raimi + Venom was already a sign of death) and even with that I couldn't stand how badly written it was. They shrunk New York into a 4 block city where everyone knows each other. Watching the first two movies again really makes me question if anyone could really consider #3 to be a part of the trilogy.

Fargo is the SECOND best film. Blood Simple? Miller's Crossing? Big Lebowski? Third at best. That's a record worthy of Kubric. If they keep this up in the next two decades it may be on par with Hitchcok. You could argue that they are two people and the others are just one, but come on. Any way you slice it their record is just scary, classic good. If there was any argument left that they should be counted among the all time greats of world cinema it is slowly dying.

Why do so many of these top 10 lists come across as being put together by intellectual snobs? Doesn't entertainment value count for anything anymore? No offense to Capone. I'm sure he's trying to impress his friends with his grasp of film theory. But come on. I mean, isn't that the whole idea behind film to entertain? Sure, there are those films out there whose whole point is to express. But to that I'd say those very good ones also entertain. Just once, I'd like to see someone give a top 10 list of the truly most entertaining movies of the year. That would be, by the only definition I know, the 10 best films of the year. Films don't have to be a living parable or a metaphor of a metaphor to be a good. They don't have to wear an agenda on its sleeve or anywhere else for that matter. They don't have to have any deep social meaning. They don't even have to have any half-assed, seat of the pants commentary whatsoever. At heart, a film should move you, a film should challenge you, a film should "entertain" you. Here's the kind of honest top 10 list I'd like to see: HOT FUZZ, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, ONCE, SUPERBAD, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, BEOWULF in IMAX 3D, the complete GRINDHOUSE experience, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, STARDUST and THE DARJEELING LIMITED. In that order. And yes, I've seen all the films in the above article's top 10, except for JUNO and 3:10 TO YUMA, and I plan to see JUNO this weekend. That said, not one of those films was as thrilling and purely entertaining as HOT FUZZ and not one was as funny as SUPERBAD. And are you kidding me with ZODIAC? There have been like 10 films made about the Zodiac killer; this one's probably the dullest. Also, please note that THE HOST was a 2006 film. And THERE MIGHT ME BLOOD and EASTERN PROMISES are good ... I'll give you that. I'd have them at the top of my honorable mentions though, along with 300, FIDO, RATTATOUILLE and BUG.

Was amazing... I don't know why it's ranked so lowly but the sheer amount of FUN I had in that film surpassed anything I've watched in recent memory (other than SinCity and perhaps Spiderman 2). I left that theater with a feeling of being in a different atmosphere. Plus the film had the right amount of subtleties, humor and action (no cheeseball dialogs) all it did was implied a lot of little details that the viewers need to think about all while mesmerizing at what's being displayed in 3D. And I absolutely loved the ending, you're thrown in a fairy tale world yet everything ends in a dark tone. There should be more IMAX films like this.

But I usually find intellectually stimulating films to be far more entertaining than films with so called "entertainment value". Stuff like Transformers and Shoot Em Up is not entertaining to me at all, the action in those films actually bores me. I do like action scenes when they're really well orchestrated (such as the 18 wheeler/motorcycle chase in Terminator 2, the battle scenes in 300, etc.) but only the most deftly executed films can survive on "entertainment value" alone. I don't subscribe to the idea that I have to turn my brain off to enjoy something, or that Transformers is somehow good because it's about giant robots and what was I expecting, Bergman? But to each their own..
I don't get the love of Eastern Promises either.

As I said in my post I watch a lot of movies but don't go to the theater often so they were new to me in 2007. I forgot to add "Hot Fuzz" and "Knocked Up" I dug the hell out of those 2. And "Transformers" was a lot more fun then I thought it would be.

I can't say I get Zemeckis' love for motion capture either. There is such slavish devotion to making the images look real that I can't fathom why they're not out there filming real images. Maybe stuff like Beowulf is baby steps and this technique will improve, but right now it seems like the cinematic equivalent of tracing with a light table. I don't think Beowulf and Grendel was a masterpiece, but I agree with all of the positives you mentioned. Above all, I loved the mood that it created, which reminded me of Herzog in a way. Like Herzog, the cinematography was very much based on landscapes, and how they reflect the landscapes of our psyche and soul. Some of the shots in the film were absolutely superb. Even though the film wasn't 100% successful, it was a fresh take on how to handle the material. Zemeckis' version just seemed like a more polished attempt at what Christopher Lambert and Co. tried in the 90s.

While a few of the numbers, I will agree, did fall flat, I haven't seen a more inventive and fun movie musical ever. It was a feast for the eyes with more than a few great performances by the relatively unknown cast. I love the Beatles and I love almost every rendition featured in the film. Some more than the originals. I agree that this movie is very divisive, you will truly love it or truly hate it, but I think to blast away this movie without even giving it a chance is just plain retarded.

I'd read the book and expected the ending. My complaints are different. The changes from the book were all harmful and unnecessary and seemed to be directed at making Chigurh a much less developed character. One of the changes they made, in the hotel shoot out, is probably the reason why the ending failed for so many people. [POTENTIAL SPOILER:] In the film it seemed as if only Chigurh was hunting Moss; whereas in the book it's always obvious that Moss' fate is in the hands of the dealers and that Chigurh represents the excess that Bell talks about. They also removed Chigurh's most important conversation. The Coens introduced a condescending humor to all the bit characters and to Chigurh himself that wasn't present in the book (McCarthy loves his simple, small town characters). It worked in the first and second act but by the end it had worn thin. If you liked the film, read the book.

LOTR and POTC worked for 2 reasons. First, they are integrated into an actual filmed location. Second, the cgi toons weren't supposed to look like a normal human in POTC/LOTR; they weren't trying to look like an actual everyday human being. That may seem like a "duh" statement, but let me explain (and yes, i've worked in animation). If there's one thing that the human mind 'knows' better than any other thing...it's what a human face should look like (another thing is the minds ability to find patterns in textures...the bane of all game developers). Other object, animals, and mythical creatures are relatively easy to model/animate compared to the a human face. With other creatures and animals you can sacrifice perfect realism for artistic exaggeration, this is something you can't do if you want to make a believable CGI human. Think about it, a micro-shift in facial muscles is all that it's taken to make thousands of memorable moments in thousands of movies. At our current level of technology we simply can't seem to find the means to perfectly replicate the complexity of human facial expressions. So every time you see a CGI human that's supposed to just be a normal CGI human, the face will always look expressionless and the lips will always look just a little bit weird for what the toon is saying.

I like your top ten and the runners up. And I particularly like that you composed a strong list of notable documentaries. I'm differing with you on a few points, however. First, I see no mention of either ATONEMENT or BLACK BOOK, both extraordinary films. I can't remember if you perhaps included BLACK BOOK on your 2006 list. Even so, it should be on your 2007 list. Next, why is 300 so low down on your list (#30)? Few movies this year were as enthralling, entertaining or beautiful to look at as this stylized historical epic. It was a huge hit and the talk of the film world when it stormed theaters. AICN seemed crazy about it at the time. Capone, you yourself wrote, "300 is unlike anything you've ever seen before...I'm drooling just thinking about it." (/node/31826) Did you really prefer KNOCKED UP? Lastly - a minor thing - while I share your enthusiasm for CHARLIE WLSON'S WAR, a very entertaining political drama, I didn't think it was as good as MICHAEL CLAYTON, which was SUPERB. The ranking there, I think, should be switched around. Otherwise, I think you've put together a pretty solid top film list. Well done.

"Atonement is my favourite movie of all time, or at least my favourite where the word CUNT is gratuitously splashed across the screen" - My Mum... This is one of the reasons I love her hahaha.

Whatever happened to the good old days, when people went to the movies to be entertained?.. one of the best top 10 lists I ever read was a list that was done in 2004 where the Incredibles was at number 1, and Million Dollar Baby and the Aviator were nowhere to be found. The guy wasnt pandering to the pretentious pricks, nor agreeing with the critics to be 'safe', he just loved the entertainment value of the movies on the list, and I think that's awesome.

Children of Men was top of my list last year. This year... I'm undecided, I'm trying to decide between Ratatouille, 300 or Bourne Ultimatum (I just had the most fun with these 3, its a personal preference. I had an awesome cinema experience with all of those films this year). P.s. on a related note, If you're looking to get an awesome blowjob after the movies, make sure the girl is totally into you and has a sense of humour (its best if you've been going out for a while), Put the popcorn container on your lap, and stick your dick into the bottom of the popcorn box where the folds meet. Then play the waiting game (be sure not to eat any, or you might as well be eating your 'own product')... When she grabs your cock after she doesn't look while reaching into the box (AGAIN!) Give her a smile, If she finds it offensive and disgusting, she's not worth it, but at least you got her to touch your cock.. if she smiles or blushes have a laugh and put the dick back away in your pants.. then after the movie, walk a little funny and laugh, then tell her oh so coolly, that you "still have imitation butter and salt on your cock".. VIOLA... Its now seen by her as NOT a tubesteak that will probably taste like a dick and give her a shot in the eye like that oh so ghey superman movie last year. NOW she sees it as a tasty food product, salty, buttery, delicious. I had the best bj of my life that night ahahah trust me true believers.. That woman is now my wife hahahahaha... Fuck its fun being a perve sometimes.

It was like watching Jason Bourne vs. the Keystone Cops!

"Where are you now CIA guy?"

"I'm, uh... in my office."

"If you were, we'd be having this conversation face-to-face."

"Gasp! Quick... Bourne's at headquarters! Drive back!"

How's about simply calling security have having them LOCKDOWN THE ENTIRE FLOOR so Bourne can't go anywhere??? Apparently, CIA headquarters lacks cameras the average college dorm has, so it can see if the most wanted man on the planet happens to sneak in to hang out in the director's office.

I was shaking my head in disgust at the stupidity of this movie's characters and script. And people knock AvP:Requiem???

While I have not seen all the movies, specifically once, michael clayton, and rescue dawn, i do question your list. While There Will be blood, No country, and eastern were good, they were so geared towards critics, and while he filmmaking was superior, they were all slower movies with long periods of silence, that really missed mass appeal. I enjoyed all, but I think that Superbad is arguably the funniest movie ever, Enchanted is a return to Disney form, Knocked Up is fantastic, Hairspray is perfect, I Am Legend was interesting and strong and Will Smith was amazing, and grindhouse was tons of fun. My top ten were in order, superbad, knocked up, grindhouse, hairspray, juno, charlie wilsons war, i am legend, breach (a fantastic, underappreciated movie by critics), and finally ratatouille. I also think Walk Hard, Sweeney Todd, There Will be Blood, and 3:10 to Yuma were fantastic and are just barely off my list. Try and connect more with real people, and if u go to theaters and enjoy the experience more that makes a movie better, which is part of the reason that some movies like Superbad are sooo good.

Not you Memories of Murder.. some other peanut further up.

I agree with you. You're pretty spot on with your assessment of COM.

However I use different things to guage what makes a good movie. Yes it is dystopian, dark, nihilistic, depressing, and scary, it is also technically brilliant, well directed and shot, with some incredible performances from some of my favourite actors.

From what I can gather though, you seem to think I'm looking at making my best of list thematically, and I wasn't. Otherwise I wouldn't throw Ratatouille, 300 and Bourne in with each other, because they're all vastly different but equally enjoyable in different ways. I also think Eraserhead, the Deer Hunter, and Requiem for a Dream are great movies too for different reasons, they are also dystopian, dark depressing, etc. etc.. Just saying.

Eastern Promises (lame ending payoff)

No Country for old men (another WTF ending, but Javier Bardem is badass!)

Knocked Up (nowhere as good or funny asthe 40 year old virgin.)

Attonement (why? because it was very boriinngg until the very end.)

Shoot em up (liked the first 10 minutes, but the rest was a lackluster attempt at paying "homage" to John Woo flicks and Grosse point Blank's dark humor. Best parts: Nirvana song, the "FU" in neon and of course Monica.) Oh wellz, to each his/her own.

This isn't a smart screenplay at it. It's a script that is trying way too hard. It's as if normal dialogue was written, and then Diablo Cody just took an urban dictionary and inserted buzz phrases. Stuff like "Silencio", " Thundercats are go", and "What the blog" (when the character doesn't even have a computer) were absolutely cringe-worthy and the entire thing was just too self aware. The entire film was makinng references for the sake of references, and it intentionally chose things that were obscure enough, that it would appeal to it's certain audience. It was like, hmmm, Romero is too mainstream, so let's mention Argento, and anyone who knows anything about Argento, has seen Suspiria so let's actually mention that too. Everyone is treating Juno like some second coming of Enid from Ghost World, which Diablo Cody desperately wants her to be, but that movie and character happened organically, whereas this one is trying too, too hard. Ellen Page did a great job as the character, but I absolutely hated Juno as a character. Every time characters would be left to riff for a few minutes, these references would continually pop up, and that same cliche of, "How do we make a girl be 'cool', and not mainstream, well let's have her like horror, and punk rock, etc.". I also didn't think this movie was funny at all? What were you guys laughing at in it? The one thing I thought funny was Bateman's reaction to the "Like the city in Alaska?" "No" part. I also didn't like how Bateman's character was billed as a villain too, when all he wanted was someone to talk to. There was all that pedophelia stuff hinted at that was done for no real reason (and the film would have been more interesting had it gone somewhere). I just hate how young girls everywhere now are going to start saying "What the blog", and listen to Iggy and the Stooges, etc., just to be like Juno, when she's hardly an original, layered character. Most disappointing movie of the year for me, easily. People are calling this the next Little Miss Sunshine? It is nowhere near that film. That being said, I can appreciate and understand that this film makes people feel special, or inspired, or have courage, and that's good, but to me it just seemed like a really easy family film, that when you take out the "Creative" dialogue, it's hardly an original script idea to begin with.
Can someone please point out...

some of the jokes in Juno? Because I can honestly barely think of any. I chuckled at the "I was thinking 'Women Now', because they help women now", and that stink eye joke about Bleeker's "new romance" (which seemed more spiteful, and easy than an actual joke). But people please tell me how this is an incredibly funny movie. Or is it just funny because snarky little Juno acts differently than a "typical" girl, and does shit like drive a car over her pregnant belly.

Alan Ball's latest film? I know it hasn't been released for the general public, but I'd figure some critics at least would maybe have seen it. That's definitely my favorite film, in spite of it kind of glorifying pedophiles, buthat's not the point of the movie by any means, and the rest of it does overpower it. 1. Nothing is Private, 2. There Will Be Blood, . Zodiac, 4. No Country For Old Men, and 5. Eastern Promises I suppose. A pretty predictable list, yeah. But they're good movies, you can't deny that. Also, I was surprised by how good Bug was as well. Completely different than how it was being sold, and a wonderful ending.

Was a huge let down, especially since I had been looking forward to this for what seemed like years with all the push-backs. I was really expecting something like Tommy or The Wall, which is wasn't at all. The songs were taken all to literally, at times bending the story to fit. For Dear Prudence, they actually had a girl Prudence whom they were trying to get to come out of a closet...way to literal. The strongest points were by far the crazy, whacked out shit like "I Want You", but very little of the movie did that. This film wasn't what I wanted it to be, but even worse it didn't know what it wanted to be.

I think I know the point he is trying to make. She used to be a stripper and she writes about that, and says how much she has overcome, and how it has given her interesting stories. HOWEVER, she intentionally became a stripper SO she would have stories to tell. And I think this reflects Joe Elliot's point. Having a relative die is obviously a traumatic experience that will change you and the works you produce, but paying someone to kill your relative so you have stories to write is not the same thing, and she's treating it as it is (metaphor is a bit of a stretch, but it's apt).

...Left and Right, in Hollywood. To deny that is to deny a massive chunk of film history, and definitely shows a lack of understanding of culture.

In addition, anti-corporation has been thrust upon the Left, but once again, it's somewhat nonpartisan if we're talking about regular American folk that do not have white-collar jobs. Everybody talks about "The Man" in one form or another and spits on the concept. Why would the Left attack those with high-profit jobs when they make up more than half of the percentage of people who have said high-profit jobs? You're mistaking the Left's desire for constant change with petty bickering. How often is this country bombarded with movies about Conservative family values, spirituality that not everybody believes in and jingoistic action and war films?

Every story has a right to be told, but you only seem to want to nitpick those whose message you disagree with.

The thing is Herzog did a documentary on the subject. He knows the truth. And he changed all the supporting characters to fit his ideology. I read that article around the time I saw Rescue Dawn, but I can't say that it altered my appreciation for Rescue Dawn (which is currently my #3 pick of the year.. but I'm seeing There Will Be Blood tomorrow) If you're going to take a film to task for not accurately representing history then why stop at Rescue Dawn? Herzog has never really been concerned with showing us accuracy or objective truth, just watch any of his documentaries (including Little Dieter Needs to Fly) and you'll find that out pretty quickly. In fact, a scene from Little Dieter immediately pops to mind where Dieter explains his need to constantly open and shut doors, to remind himself of his own freedom and the importance of having choice. Herzog made that up and told Dieter to do it for the purpose of the "documentary". Herzog is far more concerned with reaching what he calls "ecstatic truth", constructing something that represents what he is trying to communicate from pieces that aren't necessarily wholly true on their own. The fact that the Jeremy Davies character was given short shrift is unfortunate for the family of the real person, but it does not change my judgement of the film in the slightest. I always try and approach films without context, because it can impair my ability to judge a film. I'm Jewish (atheist), should I deny that Triumph of the Will is a masterpiece because of my own heritage? The answer, fortunately, is no.

Plus I didn't want to, but I actually enjoyed Heartbreak Kid, and really enjoyed Hot Rod. Good back to back rental (better then my earlier this week with Resident Evil 3 and War, 3 was as good as 1, War = worst movie of the year). Hotrod is pretty much a sequel to Zoolander, if you liked that movie you'll like Hot Rod. And Heartbreak Kid had its moments. Like just when I thought Judd Uptoe had killed comedy or your just sick of his idea of infusing Wonder Years with Dick jokes as being raunchy comedy check those movies out. Superbad was the only funny one. Also am I the only one who thought Jason Bateman's best role this year was in The Kingdom? He was really funny in that movie, which was underrated as well. Oh well after Hancok people will start to know who Peter Berg is as a director.

This en media res introduction to Viggo Mortenson's Nikolai has immediately gone down as the greatest introduction to any criminal figure in a crime drama that I've ever viewed. In all sincerity, as moving as the rise of Al Pacino's Michael Corleone was in The Godfather, Mortenson's turn as the Russian mafia/Scotland Yard undercover agent is more griping and unprecendented. I truly believe that the Italian mafia is the most over-publicized, examined, and utilized crime syndicate by far. And while the Irish mob has gotten some more face time, most notably in The Departed, some recent crime dramas like Brotherhood and The Black Donnoley's, as well as Cronenberg's A History of Violence, the Russian mafia remains in the background, sometimes referenced, but never explored as closely as this film did, and it is for that reason why Nikolai is such an intriguing character. While we are becoming more and more entranced by the inner workings of this group, Nikolai is experiencing the same discovery, and is trying to unveil as much as possible. We get an outside introduction to the character, receive an understanding that he has been headed down this path for some time but question what has actually happened, and close with a wide variety of questions about Nikolai's future. While I don't envision Cronenberg wishing to create an expansive series of films based around this one mob character, the potential is there for the story of the most interesting mob character in some time. But I get the overwhelming feeling that Cronenberg fed audiences of this film a delicious third of a serving simply because that little is known about the Russian mob. Enough to make you feel like you're really going somewhere, but never enough to feel like you've reached your imagined destination. Hopefully Cronenberg gets the creative itch to expand upon his most interesting character to date, because the not knowing is killing me.

To each his (or her) own. And not that I need to make excuses, but I'm a fan of the Bourne series, so I can see why others who haven't follow said series aren't a fan. I though this third film was a fine addition. I actually really liked at the theatre, but I absolutely loved it the second time around. The same thing that happened with SUPREMACY. The BOURNE films are clever films based on some really good books. Not sure where you're coming up with lazy. And the same with STARDUST. Lazy? STARDUST was one of the more unusual films of the year. Not the least one of the more fun films. Again, this was an adaptation from literature. Do you have something against books? Is that where the lazy comment comes from? Both these films are strongest on story. But again, to each his (or her) own. My message before was not to say that everyone's top ten list should be the same, it was just to point out that I find it suspicious when every film on a top ten list is critical darling with academy award asperations. Where are all the fun films? And what's with the lack of love for HOTFUZZ? This was a huge favorite here at AICN when it first came out. Does everyone have that much of a short term memory? Still my favorite film of the year to date. I've seen it like 10 times this year, and it never fails to entertain me or anyone I see it with. Not once.

You mean Bourne visits famous location A, a GQ model attempts to kill him and fails, Repeat through steps B and C and D, only GQ model (hard ass, cold blooded killer assassin) falls for "Give peace a chance, brother" line and doesn't shoot. Oh, and the big, horrible secret is...BOURNE KILLED SOMEONE. He didn't even know who they were! Wait, don't fucking Marines and Navy pilots do that day in and day out for kicks? What made it especially bad was that, aside from the hollywood-necessary prolouge, Bourne Supremacy truly did deliver on everything it promised. It was an amazing action film and a great story, that was well written and performed. Ultimatum was just some chases and punches to get your cash. Stardust was based on the horrible writings of Neil Gaiman. A bad place to start. But it was just an ugly, flat and poorly conceived film from the get go. It might be saying something about how strong a year it has been when I can honestly say the 3 worst major releae films I have seen were 3:10 To Yuma, Bourne and Shoot Em Up, all which received a certain measure of praise.

Nicholas Cage's NEXT

It was pretty Cagetatastic. For you guys who are students of Cage I recommend seeing this. If you didn't see the entertainment value in The Wicker Man Remake or The Kiss of Death Remake, then don't bother.

But for the rest of you this film is Cage stepping into Seagal territory (which could be classified as 'dark'). Cage even does some judo kicks and chops when escaping his FBI cell. Later he does a good Matrix bullet dodge move. But there are plenty of Cage moments of hilarious overacting, arm waving, bug-eyed head twitching, sputtering, and of course classic Cage dialogue including a little anecdote about true beauty and a good Cagified joke about a hotdog.

Jessica Biel also gives Cage-level supporting performance as a woman who meets a creepy guy with a wierd haircut at a truck stop diner, offers him a ride during which he spouts insane babble about how they were destined to meet, and doesn't get creeped out in the least. This is also one of those love story movies were it takes place over a day but the characters act really attached to each other like they've been together for years.

If I had any problems with the movie it would probably be Julianne Moore. She's way too good an actress and playing this role too realistically. I think they should've reunited Cage with his Kiss of Death Remake costar, David Caruso and really let the sparks fly. Caruso would've nailed this role. I also felt the ending was a bit abrupt, but since you guys all love this No Country For Old Men picture you probably will think it's artsy and daring or something.

I would’ve rated these two films much higher, as they mark crowning achievements for both their directors and principal actors. Oh, and unless I’m mistaken, *The Lives of Others* was a 2006 release. Remember it winning a certain “Best Foreign Film” award at a little red-carpet ceremony held in Hollywood every year? Yeah, that’s the one.

...the nominees for "Best Foreign Film" are sent in by their countries as part of that specific country's release as opposed to America's, so rarely have they ever actually been seen in this country. They are watched at select Academy screenings and are thusly judged, but that specific category has nothing to do with U.S. release. the film in question was released in 2006 in Germany, 2007 in the U.S.

Here's an example. I worked for an Oscar winner a few years ago, and was brought along to many AMPAS screenings. Specifically, I saw "City of God" a year before everybody else in this country. The group that judged "City of God" watched it because it was Brazil's nomination, but it never actually became one of the top five to make it into the category that year. (Kind of a controversy, actually, considering what happened next:) The next year, it was finally released generally across the country, and with the help of many critics--Ebert gets a big shout-out for helping this along--it ended up being nominated for four major Oscars (including Best Screenplay and Best Director) when judged as an American release, not as a foreign release. "The Lives of Others" was a 2007 release as far as the U.S. is concerned. It had a limited release in early February, so Capone is right to put it on his list.

I saw it sometime in the fall 2006 at the Fifth Avenue theater in Vancouver. It was re-released in North America in limited release after the Oscar win, but it was definitely playing in theaters as early as September 2006.

I thought it was pretty entertaining. But it was definately a Guy Ritchie movie that came five years late of that time when Ritchie's films were 'in' and when they reshot half of Mel Gibson's Payback to make more like a Ritchie movie. I'm still pretty cold on Craig in general. I've liked lots of his movies, Casino Royale, Road to Perdition, The Jacket, Munich, but he's never really impressed me or made me want to see him in another movie. I kinda lump him in with a guy like Tom Sizemore, who's also been the right actor for several parts in good movies like Heat, Black Hawk Down, etc. But I would never say "Gotta see that new Tom Sizemore flick!" or "Sizemore's in this? I'm there!"

But everybody got crazy when they heard he was going to be Bond. And I was like..."Really? That excites you?"

I haven't seen this new movie where he fights CGI polar bears with a little girl, maybe a more credible movie like that will endear him to me.

I also didn't get what all the big fuss was about Sienna Miller. Every review I read said something like "she really sizzles in this movie" or make it seem like she was in some way a major character. I don't even think she was in this film for five minutes and I found her pretty boring. Sure, she looked fine, but everybody made this out to be a breakout role for her or something. I still can't even recognize her, she's probably been in ten movies I've seen and I haven't noticed her.

Ellen Page is an adorable little pixie, and an extremely talented actor, but I found her character in this deeply, deeply irritating. Actually, I found the whole movie deeply irritating. Point taken, but I think the real truth of it is that people want to believe that they were like that when they were teenagers, because it makes those years seem cooler than they actually were. Theres nothing wrong with that, of course, but the notion that JUNO has somehow ripped the lid off of teenage america is, well, bullsh*t.

For my money, the best recent teen flick that reflects how kids really talk and feel is the almost impossible to find LILYA-4-EVER, which, dark and depressing as it was, felt like documentary in terms of how teenagers actually talk and interact with each other. Of course, they were former Soviet Union teens, but still, teens are pretty much the same everywhere, and I've never met ANYONE who talks like the characters in JUNO talk. Another film that struck me as very honest about teen life is WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE. JUNO is a movie that wants to be a reflection of teenage venacular so badly that it sounds exactly what a first time 20 something writer would write in a fit of pop-cult reference desperation. Not so much a reflection of teenage life as an idealized portrait of same. Again, nothing wrong there, per se, but I found it forced, fakey, and deeply irritating.

If you read my post, you would have seen that I actually LOVED the second Bourne film. It was part of the reason that the shitty we-need-cash sequal sucked so hard for me. That and they tried to lift the beats from the second one, when it clearly wasn't going to work. Right down to a big ass city car chase that culminates in an a personal and emotionally devestating revelation in a small room. Except Ultimatum didn't deliver the goods. It was worse than fucking Transformers. To join in on the Layer Cake discusssion. It was derivative, not terribly interesting...But it was very well made. Good performances, good editing and even well written, considering what they had to work with. Makes Vaughn's follow up even more embarassing. Loved Into The Wild...American Gangster was a well mounted production of a useless script. But even then, Ridley knows how to shoot exciting scenes. I mean, its still dog piss compared to crime flicks like City Of God...But at least it was better than Crowes other effort this year. Lives Of Others is far and away 2006. Not even close to 2007. And I live in Australia, and we get shit late. Juno isn't out here yet. The trailers are horrid...But I keep hearing amazing things about it. And yet, there isn't even a single funny line in the advertising, but a series of cringe worthy poseur crap. Although, I gather from the reviews that it slowly switches gears in the movie. Like Ghost World? I'll wait for video (because I'm a cheap bastard) I guess.

Memories, first off are you from some Viking country? (iceland, Sweeden up there) Or an asian kid, because reading what you write, all i can think off is someone from up there speaking. But your screen name references the asian horror movie? Whatever the case may be, I didn't say Layer Cake is some horrible film, just the marketing was totally misleading and of course all critics just review movies based on the trailer so they repeated the lie. I didn't say I was disappointed, I just didn't get why everyone liked it and called it so badass. It literially was a copy of Carlitos Way and both are good movies in their own way, just Layer Cake was a rip off. But since that post I've seen the DVD preview for Stardust and its much better then the one they showed when the movie was out in theaters. All I remember about that trailer was from the Director of Layer Cake, like that meant something. The dvd trailer markets the movie a lot better (probably big wigs realizing they lost a shit ton of money on it). And Spandau I agree with you about that girl Jude Law was with, she was in that movie for 5 min and I guess she's been a bunch of movies I've seen but I can't even put a face to the name. Just makes me mad when british actors/directors are all hyped up while other go unnoticed. Why is the Danny Boyle/Cillian Murphy combo ignored but people clamor over and talk about how cool/good most of what Owen/Craig/Law/Statham I'll do anything for a paycheck movies are? That and I am getting tired of America tring to make these british actors/directors big stars in the states. I'd much prefer they stay in the Isle's so they make better movies. America its always about quantity not quality. Christian Bale is the only one thats worth the fuss, but he's been working in America all his life.

It's funny, everyone I personally know who has seen this film either LOVESLOVESLOVES it or thinks it's a really good film, across the board. I was trying to write a wrap up of the 2007 film year but
by PumpyMcAss

there is no one trend to single out. You could write one about the return to form of old warhorses like Friedkin, Nichols and Lumet (and the admittedly not that awesome return of Coppola). There is plenty to talk about in terms of the re-emergence of the western with 3:10 to Yuma, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and No Country for Old Men. A decent piece could be penned about the smart "stupid" comedies of the year like Knocked Up, Superbad, Year of the Dog, and Juno. Five thousand words could be written about ambitious directors getting even more ballsy in regard to the work of Fincher, both Andersons, Haynes, Burton, and the Coens. Hell, you could even talk about actors kicking ass behind the camera like Ben Affleck and Sean Penn. You could write about the great musicals that came out this year like Once, I'm Not There and Sweeney Todd (and the not so great musicals Hairspray and Across the Universe). The unusually smart horror movies of the year like The Host, The Orphanage, 28 Weeks Later, and Hostel Part II deserve an article as well. Violence at the multiplex was also quite exciting with such films as Beowulf, No Country for Old Men, Eastern Promises, and Grindhouse throwing it in our faces in expertly handled ways. Book adaptations were also extraordinary with No Country for Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, There Will Be Blood (based loosely on Oil!), and Atonement doing their original sources no disservice whatsoever (and The Kite Runner's last act cheesiness - with its stupid coincidences and needless melodrama - amplified to an even greater degree in the film version is as good of an antithesis as is needed). The point I'm trying to make is that there were a hell of a lot of ways in which this year was ridiculously awesome. Anyone who couldn't find something great at the theater in '07 was no doubt careless in what they spend their money on.
Atonement was pretty dead-on with its source material.

Yes we all our opinions. However, if you are claiming to be a reviewer for something (anything), there are certain personal aspects that must be set aside. I personally think religion is one of mans worst creations, but do think all movies involving religion are the worst? No, that would ignorant. So for a "professional" movie reviewer to claim a movie is the worst of the year simply because they hate hippies shows an extreme lack of professionalism. How about it gets rated on it's technical merits, script or acting and so on...These are the aspects of the film that matter, not, in this case, that it has hippies. Because really, Across the Universe simply can not be worse then AVP:R, Resident Evil: Extinction and so on.

But it's almost like me seeing "Bratz" and hating it, seeing how Capone wrote his intro of his "ATU" review. Capone is the one who hated hippies, not me. I'm confused. Did you think I wrote the review? Or is that entry dedicated to Capone while the subject heading mentions me?

Just a reply discussion to you about Capone. I was using "You" in the general sense. Fun forum antics!

Not to nitpick but Julia Roberts' character asks Wilson if Reagan is in his bedroom when he's about to bang his constituent's daughter.

Really good movie, but I think I like History a little better. Also saw The Orphanage yesterday, if I had seen that in 2007, it would have made my top 10
I thought Across the Universe was feckin' brilliant!

I simply don't understand the vitriol aimed at this picture. It was astonishing and exhilarating. One of the best movies of 2007.

I could count the number of good horror movies on my thumb and index finger. Left out 30 Days of Night? That would have been my worst. Come on! I watched 20 mins of that movie then got up and walked out.

I liked the Orphanage and 28 Weeks Later. And Grindhouse. But other than that, it has been an average to mediocre year. A lot of the smaller horror films that got buzz were disappointing, like Hatchet.

Spider-man 3 snub

I can't believe it's getting all the snubs. Venom was pretty scary and probably the villain of the year. Sandman was interesting also not just a generic villain but with a back story. I thought Peter's dancing was pretty funny and you have to remember he was under the influence of the suit. I admit the endings always suck for the movies except for the first one. They should always end a comic movie on a cliffhanger or a note of things to come. I hope they make the Lizard for the next one with Man-wolf as a side villain that they could resolve before the end of the movie. I don't mind the multiple villains but they have to keep moving the story along. And does everything have to be personal with Spider-man in all the movies? Can't he just do a movie where he helps people and solve problems? Maybe Spider-man 3 was the worst of the year.
