unfortunately this movie seems to be just that. I was giving this whole prequel concept the benefit of the doubt, but casting Tyler Perry (!) and a bunch of smoldering soap opera stars is a bad sign. man, kirstie alley was super foxy in wrath of khan, as a side note. especially in the lift when her hair was down. I can't believe she got so fat. Her and kelly lebrock.

...and I do mean "if"; then this is the type of subject matter he is going to need to include.

Dealing with the ramifications Kirk faces after rigging his K.M. test is very smart idea.

As was the suspiciously strategic "leaking" of this information. The film still has another year before release; but now it will be a year in which Trek geeks the world over begin anticipating the release, rather than decrying J.J.'s Trek 90210 casting choices. A very strategic leak indeed.

There is no way, EVER, that I will watch Starfleet Academy 90210. Who gives a toss abou a bunch of ensigns (no matter their names) running around, whining about girlfriends, grades, or the Dean putting them on double-secret probation? This will be akin to the dreaded Wesley Crusher episodes that were strewn about Star Trek: TNG.

I'm forced to agree with Jack Colby: the references are overblown and lazy. Ah well, I stopped really caring about Trek after All Good Things...

Perry is an actor, and he's been cast to play a small role. It's probably just for one scene, essentially a cameo -- like Christian Slater's appearance in ST-VI. It's stunt casting but I can more easily imagine Perry fitting into the Trek universe more so than Slater.

This may be inoffensive casting but still, how do we know that there won't be more - maybe JJ can throw in a Baldwin brother or a cameo by the Olsen Twins. I keed I keed, but still... Tyler Perry? This is a mite Gay'tarded. I'd prefer it if the New Trek didn't take the Rob Zombie Halloween path onboard as a template for its casting decisions (Oh look, isn't that Dee Wallace!). Not that I have any say in the casting anyway... ho-hum. Happy New Year talkbackers! (a tad early but I'll be flouncing about who knows where when the time comes).

STAR TREK Jumped The Shark When It Became Respectable
by LaserPants
Dec 30th, 2007
07:46:54 AM
Cmon, you all know that the best elements of Star Trek were the original super campy shows. When it started getting all serious and respectable and well written and well acted, it fell off. I mean, dang! Patrick Stewart is a respected Shakespearean actor! He's too good for Star Trek. Now Shatner, Shatner with his barely competent overblown method acting is what Star Trek is all about. Bruce Campbell should be the new Kirk -- he is much better suited to the role than Matt Damon. (It is Matt Damon, right?)

On the Tyler Perry thing... I'll accept it only if he dresses in drag and acts like a raging stereotype of a cantankerous old black lady. Perhaps the crew will reverse the power couplings and go back in time and crash into Tyler Perry's latest awful movieverse causing much slapstick, eye bug outs, and Perry's barely contained raging closet homosexuality.

You're obviously young. The camp only came later with age. And that is part of the charm of ST however it has always had it's serious side. It became respectable in the first year. The fact people still like to see Shatner chew up the scenery doesn't make the whole show campy. It became extremely respectable with " The Wrath Of Khan ". People also like to watch the over acting in that one as well " Khannnnnnnnnnnn! " just had to say it. However if you think that made the whole show campy you've missed the point entirely.

35 years young! Don't think I missed the point -- I know they were trying to be serious. The sad fact being that trying to be serious often results in unintentional hilarity -- the true strength of the original shows. When every week the crew has to visit whatever set is available -- western, 1930s gangster, et al -- you can't take it too seriously or you look silly. THE NEXT GENERATION was the first time it seemed like it wasn't a joke to me. I suppose the movies were meant to be serious too, but theres no way to get past the implicit humor of the cast and their universally bad method acting.

Of course the movie had the whole overdone racial stereotype thing going for it, but it actually wasn't that lazy just done pretty well(hated the inspirational music montage that every single African-American movie has lol, time to move forward please).... Oprah influence got my ex's mom to rent the movie so there you go( watching it was an extreme example of compromise). ANYWAYYSS, Tyler Perry seems like a pretty intelligent dude as well as a decent actor that I think will fit perfectly into the universe....It's a small role anyways, and I really don't know why you guys are hating on this movie so much. The last ST series attempted to channel classic Trek, and look how that worked out. Remember when they mentioned the Clone Wars in Star Wars - and then years later they showed you the Clone Wars in the prequels? How many people here imagined something a million times cooler than what we saw? Sometimes it's nice to just drop little bits of info like that and then let the audience make up their own story behind it - you don't need to go back and show/explain everything in detail. If they wanted to return to classic Trek, they should have done a movie set in the same time period but on a different ship.

And hey, Jack Colby - don't ask for original content, because that's how you end up with stuff like "Voyager"...

Haha! J/K! (not really)

and it was pretty good. I started to watch Madea's Family Reunion, and turned it off after ten minutes or so. Thing is you know that if a white writer producer director made that movie the NAACP would bea all over them. Stereotypes are only funny, and only allowed, if they're done by the race in question. Didn't hate reunion for any racism or stereotypes, just thought it stunk. First five minutes or so and some dude makes a special spa/bath morning for his fiancee after its hinted he beat the hell out of her the night before. So he's got musicians, bath attendants in their bathroom, and he disrobes her in front of them, and she slips into the tub. Boy, talk about geek fantasy that ain't even close to real life. Oh Tyler Perry can act, even without the makeup although he thinks he's a better actor in it. Maybe I'll rent another one, but Family Reunion just soured my taste. Way too much back story. Bajor, the occupation, the prophets, the wormhole...it's all too much.

The only time there could have been a DS9 movie was Star Trek 9. It could have been about the Dominion War, instead of whatever the hell Star Trek 9 was about. It could have focused on the war and it wouldn't have been as necessary to introduce all the rest of the DS9 mythology. They could have made a kick ass Star Wars-type action movie before the prequels ever came out and it would have killed. At the same time they could have introduced the DS9 and maybe even the Voyager crew so they'd have somewhere to go with future movies. BUT NO! Here we are with Kirk and Spock.

The only DS9-type movie that could work is a movie about Section 31. That would have been kick ass if done right. Think '24' meets Trek.

And stunt-casting issues aside, what, the only token role anyone can find for black men now is president/mentor/CEO? The guy is talented as shit; he couldn't play Chekov? I mean, if Walter Fucking Koenig can get tapped to play Chekov, surely they'll hire just about ANYBODY, right? Criminy. President or CEO. It's the only bone black actors can get thrown nowadays. Trek has become so ridiculously PC, it's, er, ridiculous. Just to re-iterate, ANY time Pichard was contacted by some admiral to get orders, it was always a Female, and if it was a male, he was always Black. When the Admiral turned was white, they were either incompetent or had a hidden evil agenda. And that doesn't just go for Trek, it can go for just about any medium, and it is getting frustrating to constantly see this because in the real world, it ain't like that. That isn't racism, that's reality.

IMHO, this scene has always been a great off-camera moment. I'm just nervous about anything that will make this reboot of the ST universe even worse than what it became of Berman and co.

"What does this mean for Trek? It means that "JJ Abrams just bought himself Perrys loyal army of followers. And that means a nice chunk of the black demographic, a demographic not counted on for movies like Trek." Obviously you don't know that the audience for sci-fi always skews more heavily black, that's why there was Lando Calrissian, black power Klingons in the newer Trek series, Pluto Nash, and so on. Adding Tyler Perry doesn't add anything that Trek didn't already have-- a strong black following.

You went from Lando Calrissian to Pluto Nash?!?! I don't think much of anyone from any race saw Pluto Nash. As for Star Trek, I don't think it's crazy to think having Tyler Perry in the new movie will attract that stars specific audience. The series was running tired for everyone including the single white male nerd. Perry just doesn't have the "black demographic", but more so the 30-40 year old women and their daughters who are usually black that go see his goofy family comedies demographic. That's an audience Star Trek never had and casting Perry could help. Who knows? I guess it's interesting none the less.

You can be any color, including black, so eat it, MRX67.

Yes, that means FUCK YOU, brotha. Just so you see how all your black-centric-ness (also read: RACIST) affects us all, regardless of ethnic origin: I've been reading AICN for at least 4 yrs now and this is the first time I've felt angry enough to post.

You know why most of you haven't ever heard of Tyler Perry? It's because you're either not a racist, parading as a christian, a christian parading as a decent person, or you're just not "multi-cultural". Hmph! And yes, I have watched the Madea movies, my wife made the mistake of renting a bunch after a co-worker told her how funny they were. She squirmed at the subtle racist innuendos, too.

Just so's that all y'all ignoramuses knows: I am neither black nor white, I just feel the need to set these racist fucks, who think that they're not racist at all, in their place.

There are racists within my own race that need to be taught a lesson, too. I'm not going to reveal my racial background, because, like 98% of us, I hate the stereotypes, too. I just don't go around preaching how evil everyone is, except my own people of course.

I'm a Trek fan. Do you people remember that it was multicultural from the start? Not just the bourgeois roles either. This saddens me about this talkback.

I really want this movie to be excellent, also. I pray for JJA to make it the best movie he's ever made. Besides, TP won't be in the movie for long, so, people, quit freaking out that the movie needs a fork stuck in it. IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN RELEASED YET! Stupid fucks.

My apologies for those that I have inadvertantly offended, but FUCK YOU to all that don't even know that you should be offended. Shame on you.

Just so we're clear: Just because I'm from another culture other than white, I am NOT automatically going to back up someone's inexcusable racist comments or actions. "The MAN" is not white. "The MAN" is the people in power who abuse it without a sense of hesitation or remorse. Yes, it could mean women, too.

No, seriously, whatever. Terry Perry sucks, but does he suck any worse than any of the other bad method actors of the Trekverse? Not really. I'm sure the man will be able to do an admirable job of explaining the 11th hour deus-ex-machina contrivance that saves the crew from its latest comedic misadventure in breaking the prime directive. (Ever notice how the Enterprise ALWAYS breaks the prime directive? They're not supposed to meddle in the affairs of aliens cultures, but thats all they ever do! The Federation is deeply in denial of what it actually is.)

Angry Black Man aka MRX67
by smackfu
Dec 30th, 2007
06:52:53 PM
You're letting your Angry Black Man stereotypical personality cloud what Angry Mike is getting at. There IS a noticeable level of PC-ness in Hollywood and TV, where casting and story decisions are BASED ON RACE which is the essence of racism, is it not? A non-black example of it would be how in the past 6 years, every single tv show (ahem 24) that features an apparent terrorist attack by middle eastern terrorists, by the end it turns out that it was really evil white industrialists, or some former soviet sect that was behind it. Even that HBO series, Sleeper Cell featured a muslim terrorist group, that consisted of like 1 actual Arab, and the rest were all white, russian, french and black. Which is perfectly normal right? I mean you see terrorist bombings every day on CNN being perpetrated by Al Qaeda sells consisting of white guys, french guys, and black guys, right? You see the producers/writers don't want to be accused or perceived of being racist, so they always make the terrorists turn out to be a 'safe' ethnic group, by 'safe' I mean one that won't raise a big stink about it. There is no white irish lobby that is going to picket Fox because the bomber turned out to be an ex-IRA guy, so they go that route. It's the same with minorities in power in tv and movies. No one is saying 'white people should only be shown in power' on tv and movies, we're saying that it's peculiar and blantantly obvious PC casting, where execs are making casting decisions around racial quotas. It's the same on reality shows, every one has the exact same cast. In every reality show there must be: an equal ratio of blacks to whites, or failing that, there must be more blacks than whites. Because if there are more whites than blacks, that's racist. So there must be equal, or less white people present as compared to blacks. Also an equal ratio of women to men. There can be more women than men, but not more men than women. Because that would be sexist. There must be at least 2 asians, preferably Chinese but Koreans will do in a pinch. There must be at least one gay guy, one mom-ish middle-aged woman, and at least one grizzled old man, the kookier the better. The point Mike and I are trying to make, which I'm sure will be lost on you, is that the very steps that Hollywood takes to make sure something doesn't appear racist, are based on race and are inherently racist. Not that any one race should be consistently prevailant, but that the decisions should not be made using this stupid, PC race quota. I would be just as refreshed if I turned on Survivor one year and saw that there were like 9 asians and 3 or 4 whites or blacks. Or all blacks, or all whites, something that would indicate that the casting was based on the people who applied, and not a check-sheet of racial quotas to maintain some kind of weird PC-equilibrium with all races equally represented.
Umm Smack....

I don't know what reality shows you've been watching, but all I ever see are the token blacks. The shows you named all had token blacks (only Survivor had two). Let's break it down...Okay we know survivor had two, big brother had one, the amazing race two (which technically counts has one since they were eliminated together.) Need I go on? If there is PC in casting then I sure as hell don't see it. And if there is a quoto then someone should tell NBC, CBS,and ABC because not one of those damn networks have a minority in a starring role. Oh we got co-stars, but no starring roles.

Hollywood is full of left-wing nutjobs who worship at the PC altar... this is news? As for Perry, he's getting a bit part of no plot significance. It's like casting M as a woman in James Bond. You have to keep the whiny libs happy so the movie crew will get invited to the parties. If the movie sucks it won't be because of him. I'm confident that he can play soldier for his 5 minutes of screen time. Maybe he's always been a closet trekker and wanted to get in a film, who knows?

When this movie comes out I bet she'll see it if she knows Tyler is in it. Actually I just realized my mom is a Trekie. So she'll probably see it anyway. But some of my coworkers who talked about seeing Tyler Perry on stage would probably go see it because he's in it. Maybe not twice like they did with Why Did I Get Married but I bet they'd see it.

Although the best black movie I've ever seen was The Inkwell. That movie was hilarious.

The term "politically correct" or "PC" was coined by right-wing radio host types as a straw man to help demonize a whole slew of behaviors that are otherwise pretty uncontroversial.

There is no "PC agenda" or altar of PC-ness, as some random talkbacker above referred to. Just a realization, often driven by pragmatic business sense or just plain human decency, that it's a nice idea to try to avoid needlessly offending people.

As for the news du jour regarding this star trek prequel thingy, my hunch is that Mr. Perry can neither help nor hurt this movie. It stands or (more likely) falls on its premise alone.

Harkening back to the Christian Slater cameo and considering Nichelle Nichols "history" with Gene Roddenberry, Perry’s minor role is likely to be a step forward. Not only does Perry bring-in experience playing multiple characters (via make-up) in one movie, his presence provides an interesting challenge to the science vs. faith argument that is sometimes raised in relation to works of science fiction. Still, JJ Abrams probably isn't likely to be "Golden Compass-ed," so it’s not unreasonable to consider the possibility of studio executives having crunched data that reveals many of Perry's fans to have an interest in sci-fi. While that may sound astounding to AICN posters who grasp onto an inane image of the Perry audience as a monolithic and sequacious cluster of African Americans, it actually wouldn't be surprising to anyone halfway informed. This discussion has been entertaining, though. Beyond the bad jokes, I’ve read posters like Angry Mike *slander* logic (by contradicting himself with his overuse of the term "always”) and Austistic License *emotionally abuse* data interpretation (you should change your handle to Regression Analysis, braniac). Smackfu… you do realize that it’s already silly to have so many humans in charge of an intergalactic Federation (which is propaganda at its best) and that a quick view of world demographics exposes the main shortcomings of Star Trek casting as the historic under-representation of Asians and overrepresentation of whites, don’t you? One might view Star Trek casting as being too “PC” if they believed the village of the future looked like an extrapolation of them and their drinkin’ buddies, though. Like it or not, folks, MRX67 brings up some valid points. Question; did Abrams' casting of Winona Ryder generate an entire thread on AICN?

You're points are largely valid... but "Juice?" I can get with Cholo's recognition of "Inkwell," even though a lot of people can't decode much of what was going on in that movie. "Juice," however, seemed to reach a particular point of silliness when the kid started outsmarting grown men. Kinda' like "Mummy Returns"...

Why is it a problem if perry has some bit part? Their are quite a few respectable actors who put on women cloths for a role. Perry is no different. The man is an actor, who was also denied by Hollywood before he started doing his own shyt. Looking back, I'm sure Perry is glad that Hollywood rejected him, or otherwise he wouldn't have made over a 100 million dollars to add to his personel fortune. He'd be just another black actor, who's not Will, Denzil, Sam or morgan. He'd probably be on Law & Order SCU or something.

Dude I can understand your anger against the talkbackers here, but honestly these forums are never pro/con black, white or any other race. Even JJ Abrams faced the wrath of the talkbackers when he penned the Superman script that had Luthor as a kryptonian, Krypton never blew up and a whole bunch of other funky shit that may have been better than Superman Returns. Remember when Harry "released the hounds" at one of his signings and soon after pulled his articles then bashed the talkbackers? Now that was some good times.... No actor/director/producer of any color is safe from the talkbacks. so what they make fun of perry, so what they make fun of him in a dress, so what they make fun of his films, tomorrow we can get a JLA announcement and this thread will be forgotten until a solid trailer comes out. Lots of people/films have been bashed in these talkbacks and a lot of their bashing was moot because a lot of films went on to success (Transformers 2007, i don't care what anyone says it kicked ass).

First... despite its utter silliness, I also enjoyed "Transformers." From a logistics standpoint, I think the movie was a wonder of filmmaking. That said, I hearken back to my question as to whether there was an entire talkback geared towards Winona Ryder being cast in this very same film. Ultimately, the issue isn't whether a man in a dress is a funny image... it's why Perry (who is to be in how many scenes?) having a minor part in this movie is seen as significant enough to be the source of an entire talkback on AICN. The concern is not with how people respond to the question, but why this particular question was raised in lieu of any related to the other performers tied to this project (most of whom will play a more significant role). How would you explain this?
What Makes Even More Sense...

... is that Abrams did this simply to aggravate people like Johnypannic. An added benefit would be to get the Johnypanics out there to reveal their true colors. I am certain there was a talkback on Wynona being cast. Anyone who was cast for this film had a talkback about them. There have been countless talkbacks based on actors/actresses either having major or supporting roles. Have you been reading AICN since the incarnation of star trek 11 was strewn about? As I recall most of the talkbackers wanted the series laid to rest for awhile and come back fresh. As I recall JJ was bashed for even thinking of a reboot. So don't try to make reason for this particular talkback, white/black/hispanic/asian actors and actresses have all faced talkback wrath so don't take this particular talkback to heart just because Tyler Perry is black. If any black actor needed saving from a bashing you should stand up for Michael Clark Duncan when he was cast as Kingpin. Nuff said.

Varakor... unfortunately, I've been around AICN for somewhere near a decade and, unfortunately, this entire exchange is nothing new. Still, how can you be so mendacious to claim that this talkback has nothing to do with race after you’ve lauded a comment where someone *specifically* besmirches "black people" in this discussion? If you have a moment, please re-read my posts. Before this response, *my* only reference to African Americans was saying that Perry's audience wasn't a monolithic Black group. The people who’ve insisted on making this a race issue, it would seem, are the very people (Angry Mike, Autistic License and Johnnypanic) you're defending by inference. While your civility is appreciated and you seem like a good person, your defense of their behavior only brings you to their level. Xiphos... okay, then where are the links to the Winona Ryder and Eric Bana-specific talkbacks? Perhaps they had "witty" titles that make them a challenge to find in the archives?

Umm, sweetheart, I didn't accuse anyone of racism for disliking Tyler Perry. I think he sucks too, but reckon he's competent enough to rattle off whatever 11th hour deus ex machina contrivance saves the crew from their latest transgression of the prime directive.

If you read my post, and, more importantly, understood it, you would discern that I made the comment in regards to Angry Mike's misplaced anger, delusion of oppression, hilariously disturbing white male angst, and sense of unease in regards to the fact that Star Trek dares to feature people of colour and women in roles of authority. The implied idea of a truly equitable future between all races and genders really freaking out present day racist angry white guy types who inexplicably see themselves as oppressed even though they still maintain the clear edge in the social order. Understand?

But then again, I get the sense that your not the type of guy who reads all that much; to say nothing of the whole crucial comprehension aspect. So, good luck! Have a great New Years Eve! Yay!
