It's cliche or whatever, but COW BOY BEBOP is the best anime ever (IMHO). Also TRIGUN is really good, too. But anyone even casually interested in anime (here in the States) knows about those 2 classics. I mention them, because they are off your list.

Yeah i saw Bepop, liked it. A bit too episodic for me though. Trigun I havent tried. Other series I like are : Gasaraki, Boogiepop Phantom, Rahzephon. I know most good Anime gets released in America, whereas over here we get what sells. I'm after something a bit dark, well animated and mostly dark. Any suggestions?

to recommend a random few... Black Lagoon, Gunbuster, TekkonKinkreet (you might not love it, but it's well worth seeing), and finally Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, the first couple of episodes are being streamed at http://www.theanimenetwork.com /aod/ Stay tuned for a Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann write-up in the near future.

a few months ago a trailer for an upcoming anime was posted on AICN... and I've completely forgotten the name. The trailer had a group of soldiers assaulting a mansion in the mountains in the middle of winter. It was all in CGI. I remember that the soldiers has some sort of combat suit with a helmet where the facemask was an upward sloping glass wedge... Can anyone remember this???

Did they use the music from Pan's Labyrinth for the Red Princess Blue trailer? Because it sounds like it.

A bunch of stuff I'd say has already been mentioned: Evangelion, Lain, Cowboy Bebop... Some I like that I don't see mentioned...

Revolutionary Girl Utena. Looks like it's girly "Sailor Moon" anime but it's that genre filtered through an Evangelion sensibility so that it's so not. It got action, humor and feels like a drug enduced head trip.

Perfect Blue is really good too. The plot is such that it could be live action (and has now been adapted to live action). It's a thriller about a young "pop star" being stalked by a crazed fan.

Giant Robo is also fun. A more modern update/homage to the old school "boy and his big robot" shows. They do a nice retro take on the look and attitude but with a more modern and smarter (?) sensibility.
I guess 'Conqueror Worm' prefers series with long arcs

... rather than episodic stuff, me too really! You also list some favourite shows that are dark trippy sci fi. In that vein I highly recommend 'Ergo Proxy' you might love that! Also on a more light hearted level I recommend 'Last Exile.' Then of course there's 'Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex' series if you liked the movies and those are what you mentioned. Other recommendations I tihnk you'll like are Otomo's 'Memories' 'Chevalier D'Eon' 'Outlaw Star' 'Metropolis' 'X (TV series)' and there are a whole bunch more that I can't recall to mind right now... :P And if you're interested in something comedic, there's 'Full Metal Panic'

Ditto on Johnno's "Ergo Proxy". The animation on that one is amazing. I would also say Noir, Gunslinger Girl and Elfen Lied would definatly sate your Anime hunger.

I mean, aside from the background visuals, everything about it looks like complete trash. Probably some of the worst character designs and stilted animation I've seen. I know it's "indie", but so was Voices of a Distant Star and that one was made by ONE GUY! It also looked better than most studio productions. Also, it outright STOLE the Pan's Labyrinth theme.
Suggestions? COWBOY BEBOP.

You know, funny anime with cute little creatures and schoolgirl love stories and shit like that (yeah, I'm a big sissy boy. Deal with it). I guess I'm just a little tired of mechs and demons. So, any recommendations in that area?

Lovely people. Plenty to seek out. Loved Voices of a Distant Star, Metropolis, Perfect Blue, Memories and Vampire Hunter D. Ones that stick out so far from those recommended are : Black Lagoon and Ergo Proxy. I fancy giving Mushi-Shi a try, its episodic but it looks beautifully animated, reminds me of another episodic series about a girl on a bike(?). But what I'm really looking for is these 'long story arc' series that I can get me teeth into, so cheers for the recommendations. Godspeed.

I'd have to say check out Cowboy Bebop as well, I finally started watching it and I'm hooked. I second the Ergo Proxy and Black Lagoon nods, I enjoyed the shit outta Death Note as well, and I'd also check out Noein, very intriguing sci-fi.
Also here's another few suggestions you'd like

'Gilgamesh' is definately a dark and moody long-arc show that's sure to impress and confuse. Also 'Elfen Lied' is also good. 'Full Metal Alchemist' is more light hearted fare but that's also an excellent show! 'Now and Then Here and There' might also fancy you. Also for a more fantasy series I personally love 'The Vision of Escaflowne.' For something with horror, I highly recommend 'Blood+' and you amy also dig 'Hellsing' there's the old TV series, and also the newer still-releasing OVAs. 'Death Note' is also highly recommended!

If you like Ghost in the Shell, you might also dig Patlabor 1 and 2 and particular Patlabor WXIII, also Jin-Roh and there's the fun 3D Appleseed! If you liked Voices of a Distant Star you may like 'Place Promised in our Early Days.' 'Kurau Phantom Memory' is also pretty nice series. Also if you haven't already you absolutely must check out 'Akira.' I mean... really! ALso stuff like 'Spriggan' and 'Ninja Scroll'

And for Knuckleduster, for some fun, check out Ichigo Mashimaro' 'Ouran High School Host Club' 'Ai Yori Aoshi' 'Genkishen' ' Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi' 'Azumanga Daioh' 'Girls Bravo' 'kimi Ga Nozomu Eien' or however the fuck most of these are spelt... Also especially 'BECK' and 'Paradise Kiss'

Speaking of low budget indie stuff, the absolute best I've ever encountered is one called 'Broken Saints' which is mroe animated comic book than actual animation, but beautiful! You can watch the entire thing online for free at their site or check out improved artwork and video effects with full voice acting on the DVDs which come in a lovely set!

been mentioned yet Samurai Champloo is good. I'm an old schooler that also likes the classic stuff like Matusmoto Leiji's Galaxy Express 999 (TV series and first 2 movies but none of the off shoots), Captain Harlock (the original TV series only) and Space Battleship Yamato (the two TV series and 3rd movie) as well as stuff like the original Gundam 0079 story arc and Lupin the III series but I don't know how they're going to hold up to people who like the newer anime. 'Monster' is a great Hitchcock-esque anime. It's going to be too long and drawn out for some but I absolutely loved that series. Great directing. Also Gantz is a pretty weird/trippy hardcore anime/manga with an interesting concept. I haven't kept up with Gantz but you might like it. All the Hayao Miyazaki stuff is great. The older Hayao is much more accessible. Satoshi Kon is also very good but it's not going to appeal to people expecting traditional fare. Also in general, as with most things, the mangas are much better than the anime.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is a beautifully animated sci-fi take on the classic revenge tale. Samurai 7 is another excellent mix of the old and the futuristic, this time based on the classic Kurosawa film. Witch Hunter Robin is well-animated and dark without being depressing. It's a bit episodic at the start but develops a longer story arc. Heat Guy J is a solid sci-fi action series with a sense of humor. And since you liked yoshitoshi ABe's other works (Lain, etc.), you should check out NieA_7 when you're in the mood for something light. It's a slow-paced slice of Japanese life with a mooching, pixie-like alien thrown in. Knuckleduster would probably like it too.
Thanks, Johnno and Charles.

Manly tears! Its Gunbuster on crack, with 9 tons of testosterone. But the ADV subs on the streaming episodes are horrid, just for the fact they translate "The Gurren Brigade" as "Team Gurren". And you cannot leave the show's signature catch phrase "Who the hell do you think I am?!" as just "Who do you think I am?" Oh, and I find your lack of Macross F converage distubring...

Dennou Coil, fun cyber hackerkids mystery. Kekkaishi, magical barrier skills, some slow parts but when the action kicks in it's awesome. Naruto, not the cartoon network crap, watch the originals. Death Note, kill with a stroke of the pen. Bleach, based around weapons with kickass fights and kick as music. Tekkonkinkreet, first animated feature out of Japan with an American director. Ghost in the Shell (the first movie) and mini-series. Afro Samurai....Cowboy Bebop....any and all of Miyazaki.
