I don't get why no one here liked the Ang Lee one. It was seriously the only time I've every felt the Hulk had any credibility as a story, and Bana is fucking perfect. This will prob be more fun, easier on the brain, and more lucrative, but it will NOT be as good as the Ang Lee one

Him and Tim Roth, are criminally under used and pretty decent actors. I know as of late, the two have seen a mild resurgence in their careers, but as far as ability is concerned, they should both have much larger resumes.

First off, I actually liked the first one. It dealt with emotional/psychological issues, and was "deeper" than most comic-based flicks.

The desert scene was fantastic, and the mutated dogs were actually not asstastic like I thought they would be.

That being said, it felt waaay too long - the fault of poor pacing, and it badly needed some editing/chopping. The Nolte turning into a mushroom bit was super-gay (as well as the preceding bits). The movie should have been about Super-Absorbing Man, and that's it. Which brings me to my next point/question...

W hy do we always have to have characters fighting similarly "equipped" nemesi? Your hero huge? Have him fight huge guy. Your hero have metal claws? Have him fight metal finger girl. I know it's the classic comic book formula, but let's try and mix it up. That's my initial problem with this [version of] flick (so far).

Ang Lee's hulk wasn't deep or intellectual it just thought it was. it was actually a train wreck. Ang as good a director as he is didn't get it. you can't have a character that starts out with no believable conflict. the tv show got it right. hopefully this redo will be a long the same lines. banner is not a hunk , never has been , again you have to adapt characters its just not interesting to slap them up on screen and watch them like a cartoon. comics can do things in broad strokes. movies shouldnt.there was plenty of material to draw from , frankenstein , dr jekyl and mr hyde. for some reason ang thought he was doing a greek tragedy

Because it goes over your dense skull? So do you say then that every film Ang Lee makes i.e. CTHD or Mt. Brokeback is equally pretentious? Or maybe he just made another (somewhat) complex Ang Lee film, immature fanboys be damned? (Which admittedly was not a good financial move, as intellectualism and potential billion dollar movie franchises simply do not mix) I try to be above such pettiness, but it bothers me when people call something pretentious just because they don't get it...

I just posted that second photo. I didn't know you had posted. Disregard mine, folks. re: Ang Lee's "Hulk." I'm very glad to see others enjoyed it. When I first saw it, having not read anything, I was really happy with the interpretation. And the ending made me hopeful we'd see the next stage in Bruce Banner's evolution, but I guess that won't be happening. I still find it so strange that they would do this, so fast upon the heels of the last. But, looks like. Edward Norton does rock. As does Tim Roth!

nothing in Ang Lee's Hulk went over anyone's head. Like a lot of Lee's movies, the melodramatic performances screamed "FEEL SOMETHING!" to the audience, although with a mediocre CGI HULK, came off as kind of silly.

All the attempts at heavy drama, juxtaposed with the wildly hopping Hulk, the electric Nick Nolte and the FUCKING COMIC PANELS and thought bubbles literally drawn on the screen, anyone who could claim any of that could go over anyone's head is a moron.

Dec 27th, 2007
08:28:10 PM
coincidentally I hadn't watched Hulk in awhile and took the chance to do it a few days ago. I think it's a good movie but it's unnecessarily complicated. Take out the Nick Nolte character and the movie flows a lot more smoothly. Irregardless, I was wondering when this movie's going to get more press. We've already had two Dark Knight Trailers, an Iron Man trailer, as well as something from every major film coming out in summer of '08. This on the other hand seems to have a huge shadow over it. That or they're still filming it which would mean a rushed post-production reminiscent of X3.

Those multi-panels in Ang's Hulk weren't comic book panels but..
by Uncle Bobo
Dec 27th, 2007
10:23:39 PM
actually represented alternate points of view, different ways of seeing things. Alternate realities, kind of what the Hulk is. If anyone can stand to go back and watch any of the multi-panel scenes, you'll see it's not telling the story sequentially like a comic book, one action after another, and it's not a cell phone conversation a la "24". Those multiple panels are showing multiple angles of the same thing, the same action, or subject. For instance, in one multi-panel scene with Glenn Talbot, we see him exiting a room from like three different angles. This is just a cinematical representation of Ang Lee's theme of alternate realities, like the Hulk, or Bruce Banner's other life. And it's an example of how the film went over everybody's heads who simply decried it as Ang Lee's lame attempt to actually make the film look like a comic book. Do you honestly think Ang Lee is that stupid?

Lee Hulk
by Staldo
Dec 27th, 2007
11:53:12 PM
I thought Lee's Hulk was pretty decent myself, except for the wierd freudian "Daddy hates me and killed my mommmy" BS. The stuff about Banner's father didn't come into the comic until really recently, like the last 10 years. Imagine if they had saddled the first X-men movie with the Age of Apocalypse storyline . That's advanced shit. Don't expect first-time audiences and casual superhero fans to buy into that. Hulk to most people is a good-natured seventies drifter type guy who periodically turned into Lou Ferrigno. For that matter, did anybody else see First Blood and notice the similarities between Rambo and 70's TV hulk?(drifter, accompanied by somber music, turns into a killing machine when threatened?) Veebeeyes: Irregardless is a stupid word. I would like to add to that the word "addicting" when used in place of "addictive". That's raw stupid.

Ultimates was a brilliant re-invention of some heros who needed it, from the helmet-mask of Captain America(with a gun, finally) to the Freddie Prinze Jr. hating Hulk. Looks like this movie was influenced by it, and Ed Norton's involvement means if it sucks I'll be shocked.

Bruce Banner is a milksop. He's not supposed to look all John Wayne. It's the one thing they got right on the television show. No one ever hesitated to kick Bill Bixby's ass because they knew they could. On the other hand one of the many, many reasons Michael Keaton didn't work as The Batman (besides an absence of acting skills) was that most guys could probably kick his midget ass. Batman shouldn't look like you could kick his ass. Bruce Banner should have to worry about chicks kicking his ass.
The new CGI Hulk still looks fakey.

When will effects people figure out how to make living things that actually look like living things? It's been 15 years they've been working on this and all they've managed to achieve is "grimier".

as much as I love Norton, Stephen Colbert would have made a perfect Banner. You need geek and mild mannered glasses wearing guys...not rock hard abs already with a chisled chest and arms whilst filling out a wifebeater and making me hot... Wait..that's too much info.

I'm all for a great Hulk movie, but are we really going to have to sit through the goddamned origin story yet again?

I ask in seriousness--can someone tell me what is different about this movie, and how it will avoid being another ponderous angst-fest?

I hope it does. I'm just short on details.

Oh, it's the Abomination

Just saw the little synopsis text on Superherohype. It still sounds like it'll waste too much time, but if the story really is action-packed and tied to the dilemma of Banner, that could be alright. And fighting with the Abomination could be great if done at a ridiculously epic scale.

Geek topic: has Marvel changed things around over the years, or is the Abomination actually the strongest character in existence? I recall the Hulk holding that title due to the seemingly unlimited peak of his strength when tied to anger, but isn't the Abomination supposed to be a bit stronger?

And who ever figured *this* would be the movie to co-star Norton and Tim Roth?

If you've read World War Hulk, the last issue is amazing. With Hulk and Sentry nearly killing each other. Sentry was actually one of the strongest guys around for awhile. They nearly destroy the planet. It's freaking sweet and I doubt we'll ever see it in movie form cause it would cost a shit load of cash to make. But anyway...Roth is a god. This SHOULD be good.

I've been away from first-run comics for many years now; I mostly buy the Marvel Essentials collections these days, if that gives you some idea! But I'm glad to have a lead on some good recent stuff--it's hard to know where to start--so thanks.

Good call on Colbert--he's a dead ringer for Steve Ditko's Bruce Banner!

Planet Hulk and World War Hulk are awesome. Get the hardback collection of Planet, it's beautiful stuff. skimn that's very true. I wonder if that's the test now, if you can look good in a wifebeater you can play the next big superhero. Hmmm...wonder if they did that for Chiklis as The Thing. (shudder) In other news, why hasn't AICN said anything about the new Heroes hardcover novel that just came out? I'm surprised since it's something to do as we have no more Season 2? Looks interesting. Tells us what happened with Hero and Charlie that we didn't get to see.

I guess I'm a moron or something. I was pretty impressed with big chunks of the film. I would take it over spideypants 1,2,3,etc. Not a perfect film by any stretch, but there aren't many comic hero adaptions that I would deem beautiful. There are parts of the Hulk that were so visually masterful that I think a guy who could just blow it off is one jaded, hard to please MFer who has lost the love of film. But it is cool to shit all over the film, I've just read too many confirmations of this to believe otherwise. Most of them just so damn witty too.

The basic story is laid out...so are the characters...how hard is it to have the army testing a gamma bomb in secret and having banner get caught in the blast? Not "nanites" or a "gamma machine"! When you make a movie of a comic make the the comic, not your interpretation of what is, in your opinion, the best things from the comic to use. How much can a person change a story until it's not the original.....damn...

he's not a natural or obvious choice. but he IS a good actor and he doesn't look completely wrong for the role (e.g., nic cage as superman). if the movie sucks, it won't be because of norton.

it'll be difficult for this movie NOT to improve upon giant poodles and a killer cloud of anger energy - which was apparently such a "brilliant" idea that they used it for RotSS too.
