Like also appearing in a Uwe Boll film. All he needs to do now is appear in a Michael Bay film and he'll have worked with all the shittest directors in Hollywood (unless someone digs Ed Wood up out of the ground and reanimates him).

Perhaps working with useless directors is Statham's way of improving himself as an actor by having to rely on himself to find a character because the director is too busy masturbating over all the jump cuts he's shoving into a scene.

We should have stopped him but, alas, we sat back and did nothing. Now Anderson is loose in Hollywood and we have no legal powers to get him out of America. We're very sorry.

However, we would like to point out that we did also give you Christopher Nolan and Wigley Scott (that's an Extra's reference for anyone who watched it earlier). We realise it does not fully make up for Anderson but we hope it helps you to forgive us.

Oh and Germany gave you Uwe Boll. So they're a lot worse.

At least there was more care taken in developing Lathan and Henriksen's charactrs. Not much, but way more than the Brothers Strause's efforts. It's sad that I'm praising the guy here, because AVP was indeed sub par, but at the time I didn't think things could get any worse....

Paul W.S. Andersons Omega Man remake (Besides I am Legend, 28 days later, Resident evil, Death Race, Mad Max etc there are not enough post apocalyptic movies out there)!... Paul W.S. Andersons Blade Runner Remake (Deckard makes a few more unicorns & then goes slow mo resident evil kung fu on the replican army)!... Paul W.S. Andersons Terminator remake (Set in present day Russia, the terminators were actually invented by Egyptians)!... Paul W.S. Andersons Titanic Remake (the Titanic is actually a warship full of zombies. The new twist: the ship doesn't sink in the end!!)... Paul W.S. Andersons Ben Hur Remake (Set in the future, Ben goes in an apocalyptic death race!!)... Paul W.S. Andersons Matrix Prequel (We discover the matrix was created by mad max. Max used some spare parts from the Ford Falcon Interceptor & created a terminator that could defeat the Egyptian replican zombie army)

by Shermdawg
Dec 27th, 2007

...which is really unfair regarding X3. He was hired gun in a hijacked and rushed production. Anderson however, was the guy in charge with AVP AND Resident Evil. And while the Alien franchise was already on a downward spiral, Resident Evil had everthing going for it, and there was more than material to draw from. But it was dumbed down....like most of hs adapted work to the point where it barely resembled what made the series so popular. It wasn't the zombies. It was the atmosphere. It was the pacing. Which he failed on both. And then there's the Jovovich character...

The guy's a terrible director/producer, and until he puts out something decent, then maybe the hate will go away... or at least ease a bit.

But Harry didn't get his way so we get a decade long bile filled vendetta against the guy instead. And of course the sheep like hater masses are all to happy to follow the Ginger One down that path of bile spewed venom every time, taking it all to the nth degree, deserved or not. It was a nasty, sick, twisted - but deeply funny - concept that could only ever work back the days before political correctness was invented. Statham can probably rescue some of the dialog. McShane can probably do something along the lines of nasty, evil bastard that you still have a sneaking like for. But they and pointless washed up Geordie of a director can't possibly make Death Race.

Right now he's stuck playing the same sort of characters that Michael Caine would've played back in the 70's. For the same reason - the attitude and the accent: "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" He's probably got more to him but you can't blame the guy too much when people are throwing money at him just to play himself!

Anderson is ok and Harry just continues to hammer the guy before he gets a chance. What's worse is that so many people believe Harry's surmons on how bad this guy apparently is as a director. What about the knobheads who finance Uwe Bol's atrocities against cinema? Jan Debont was a two movie wonder. Since Twister he has directed nothing but shite. Just because you are DOP for a genius like Paul Veroheven, it doesn't make you a good director. Give the guy a break Harry. This film might tear your balls off.

I'm not a PWSA lover by any means (specially after AvP), but I would rather sit through all of 'Soldier' than any of the Star Wars prequels. All 3 movies being guilty of the bulk of the atrocities that Harry pins to Soldier. But there's no way you will ever hear Harry spew such harsh sentiment towards George Locust, I'm sure.

Uwe has never had his hands on a property I gave a shit about. After MORTAL KOMBAT - which was funky, but acceptably bad for what it was adapted from... he made EVENT HORIZON which was raped by the studio - and resembled a movie that could have been better, but didn't quite do it. At that point I defended Paul W.S. Anderson against the studio forcing a brutal edit of that film. But next, he got assigned to direct a script written by the man that wrote BLADE RUNNER and UNFORGIVEN. The script was one of the great scripts I've read. Just absolutely brilliant and CINEMATIC. You could imagine the film perfectly. I felt that Paul's weak area was his personal writing, but here... here he had a perfect script. Then he began casting it - really really well. Kurt was PITCH PERFECT to play the title role. He got a wonderful DP, everything in advance was looking good. I followed it, believing that this would be Paul's break out film. That a truly great science fiction film was on the verge - something we hadn't had in quite some time.

He took all the right talents and materials and digested it in his brain - and shat out a fucking awful manure fest at 24 frames a second.

After that - he stole RESIDENT EVIL from George Romero and made me dislike an actress that I previously loved. Then he made AVP - which was a wet dream geek project that comic store fanboy movie geeks had been wanking about forever - and... well, you know. I fought to keep him away from John Carter of Mars years ago when the powers that be at the studio thought he was perfect (I'M SERIOUS) - but he continues to get things I once looked forward to, like DEATH RACE, SPY HUNTER and MAN WITH THE FOOTBALL. He's a cinematic leper - rotting promising projects from the inside out destroying things that coulda been a contender for our favorite geek movies, but instead become the titles we pull our hair out over.

But I hear he's a great guy, passionate about geek things... he was just born without the ability to translate it into something worthwhile.

sucks. The reason being a lack of effort. He's almost there in a lot of movies, but never goes all the way. What he needs to do is pull a complete 180 in his performances. Just act completely apeshit. Do a Daniel Day Lewis and make the audience concerned about his well being a human being.

And I'm standing to it. Those movies sucked and unlike Soldiers he had full command on those and made vile shitty movies. So this will be the same and I will avoid it. I agree though about MCG. Bale should bite the bullet for the better and beat that foul down and curb stomp him for Charlie Angels: Full Throttle.

which is why he keeps working. It strikes me that a lot of people seem to want to lump Anderson in with megabudget directors like Bay, which is just comical if you bother to check up on the budgets for movies like AVP and Res Evil. He got a 60mil budget on Event Horizon and turned out the best looking SF horror picture since Alien, but lost final cut. Soldier was similarly well budgeted and is another good-looking movie but after that tanked at the bo... Bottom line - PWSA is the studios goto guy for genre pictures that bigtime directors won't touch with a 10ft bargepole as they are pretty much guaranteed to get a critical drubbing ON PRINCIPLE.

like the plot of Running Man. Thank God Paul Bartel's not around to see what they're doing to his satire. And thats the thing, the movie is based on a satirical premise. Not just action thrills and spills. And I would think Tom Cruise's producing partner would have better taste in choosing a director. You sense PWS Anderson's geek love when he steals from much better films to compliment his. The "Don't Look Now" hommage in Event Horizon, the use of traps in Resident Evil and AVP like "Cube". He's not bad, he's just not any good.

Paul WS Anderson movies all appeal to a demographic(kids). Mortal Kombat was great when I was in 9th grade(I'm 26 currently). Now I shutter at the thought of watching it. I never saw Soldier, but I've heard enough to keep me miles from it. Event Horizon, well, that one I think he nailed...especially if you're a fucked up adult male. I still love that flick. Resident Evil should have been left in the hands of George Romero, as Anderson sort of fucked it up. Again, if you're a male 18 or under, Resident Evil 1 was probably your cup of tea, and at least it had a decent ending(ruined by sequels). AVP was a mess, but there was some resemblance of a film in there, it just never came out. I liked the Alien Queen on a rampage/Jurassic Park scene, but overall it was a bland film, one I'll never watch again. Again, if you're 16 or under, AVP1 was probably fun for you. Death Race is just, uh...blecch. Why all these remakes? No one wants them, yet they keep shelling them out. I can safely say I'll more than likely stay far from Death Race. God only knows how he'll butcher Castlevania when he gets his fingers on the keyboard for that one. Let's pray it falls through the cracks of production hell, never to resurface.

His movies always look that one extra quarter of an inch better than DTV and he always seems to shoot for a PG-13 rating and so they squeek into cinemas, 12 year old boys go to see them because they are based on video games they play and at the end of the day the studio has a few bucks.

What I want to know is how he feels about his work? Does he know he's this guy, or is he proud of his films? He's gotta sense the resentment, especially after AvP.

Still, you know PWSA will find a way to fuck this one up. As with AVP... the one movie you thought could never fail. Uwe Boll must be laughing his sick fucking ass off... you KNOW he'll be up for DEATH RACE 2!!!

What's up with the moronic hate campaign by AICN, especially Harry, against anything Anderson attempts, without even having seen as much as a frame of his latest effort? Sure, the guy is mediocre at best, but Event Horizon was very enjoyable (except for the complete miscasting of Sam Neil), and actually I quite enjoyed Soldier , even though indeed it's obvious that a more talented director would have done a better job with it. Anderson wil indeed probably never make a great movie, simply because he lacks the talent, but there are way worse directors in plentiful amounts adding their crap to the shitheap that's called Hollywood. It's almost like AICN is sort of on a mission to put the guy out of business or something. Grow up for christ sake. As for people who think that AvP in different hands would have been way better; I seriously doubt it as the whole concept is idiotic and completely disrespectful of both franchises to begin with. They should just keep their paws off both of them and respect what's already there. It may sound like Geek heaven, but I believe it was bound to end up in the hot place, unless they would have used a completely different script to start with.

That pictures reminds me of the classic. It doesn't look bad in any way. I'd go as far as saying it looks kickass. It's the reworking of the plot that bugs me, turning it into The Running Man with cars. Harry, you need to get over your hate of this guy. Event Horizon was a good and scary movie. AvP was okay for what it was. Soldier was okay from what I remember, mainly for Kurt Russel's good acting performance. Even Resident Evil was a good, memorable horror movie, especially for one based on a video game. But for you to jump all over this movie because of this photo just confirms your undying bias against the director. Your shitting on this movie based on that picture is shitting on your own credibility as a reviewer. I'll reserve my judgment until I see more, but from this picture I can see that it looks pretty cool so far.

now its just sad and smacks of jealousy to me. The truth of the matter is that at worst, PWSA makes mediocre movies - he's a competent if largely uninspired journeyman. But as I pointed out in my last post no director with "serious" aspirations would pick the projects PWSA does. That said the guy does genuinely seem to love genre stuff, and theres a few of us out here that really do rate Event Horizon as a minor classic. I'd love to see the guy pull a rabbit out the hat again. Thing is though is he ever going to get a fair hearing on AICN? I mean seriously, the guys doing AvP2 get props on here for going for a simple gore-fest, whereas PWSA gets a kicking for at least trying to make something decently "epic" on a paltry $45m budget.

AVP: 171 Miliion Worldwide. Resident Evil: 102 Milion Worldwide. Mortal Kombat: 122 Million Worldwide. If Anderson's films really were as "terrible" as Harry endlessly whines, wouldn't they have Uwe Boll-level box office? Sure, they ain't brilliant, but of the four films of his that I've seen (AVP, Resident Evil, Event Horizon and Mortal Kombat), they've been perfectly fine beer-and-pizza viewing. And maybe Harry, you should reserve your Resident Evil bile for Capcom, who actively dissed Romero's script in public. Anyway, how exactly does a director "steal" another's project?

The original Death Race was a horrible movie. What is with people here? MY God who remembers Harry's RIDICULOUS Armageddon review, his absurd ranting and dropping to his knees as he sheds tears at the beauty of it all...that was the point it all clicked that Harry never has and never will have any taste. What is even more insane is his rant is keyed off of ONE image...ONE. Jebus, I mean get a fuckin grip. This and the chocolate coated pussy juice thing...damn the idiot just needs to STOP.

Guess PWSA didn't let Harry on one of his sets, or didn't give him enough complimentary barbecue afterwards.

Yeah I agree they're perefectly fine "beer-and-pizza" viewing, but that's not their problem.

With the exception of Mortal Kombat - AVP, Resident Evil and Event Horizon had the potential to be GREAT films, not the forgettable mediocre ones that they are.

It's hard to see how AVP became so bad considering it had two of cinemas greatest monsters in it. Should have been so much more.

Resident Evil moved so far from the game's story that it was hard to see it as Resident Evil at all. The eerie dark mansion setting would have worked much better than the stupid "Hive" idea. Also why they change the game's great characters? Where was Chris and Wesker? Where was the Tyrant? If they'd have followed the game story we might be enjoying a cool Resident Evil 4 based movie by now...

Event Horizon had an amazing concept. A spaceship gets a warp drive fitted but ends up in hell. That's a fantastic premise for a story but it was executed so poorly. I remember being intrigued by it at the start then bitterely dissapointed by the end.

Making a film that's perfectly fine viewing is one thing, but doing it at the expense of potentially great geek movies isn't so good.
Was'nt he suppossed to direct the Castlevania movie?

I mean why depart so drastically from such subversively fun source material? (including the DH graphic books) Where's the whole Frankenstein mystique gone? I dug the whole rubber gimp thing, where's the menace in an East end lag driving a naff stock car round a circuit? I wanted to see Kevin O Neil style pimped out futuristic death machines tearing it up across Trans-America Death Race! Damn you WS Anderson!

One fucking picture. "Look at the production design!!!" What the fuck?

I say again - it's a fucking picture. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of the guy's work...but come up with a better reason to shit on this movie than ONE PICTURE.

Because he himself is clearly the extra, extra left over crap that spawned Arnie and Devito in Twins. The man is an awful writer. He is a limited director, the kind of guy who studios can go to to produce 90 minutes of soul destroyingly bad and unchallenging cinema that the slower of the masses can go and watch and look at the pretty slow motion gunshots. Sweet Jesus. And Capcom can go fuck themselves coz' they whipped Romero outa the driving seat on Resident Evil... talk about sitting on pure cinematic gold and then giving it to a Ford Transit commercial director (he never did that but its defo within his 'range'). EV, Soldier, RE, AVP, the script for RE2... the guy seems presently incapable of making a good geek movie. Seriously dude, call Ford, ask them about any up coming commercial projects and send your [shite] CV. Peace out.

it would have sucked even worse. Come on people get a fuckin grip on reality. Romero has been coasting on NOTLD. Even that movie isn't great. Poorly directed, clumsy and stagey. It just had the advantage of being unique and DOES carry lots of impact. Harry, go back to your chocolate coasted pussy juice, you fuckin moron. Sheesh, what an idiot you are.
