Blood vs No Country

Dec 27th, 2007

No Country was visceral and badass to no end . . . but There Will be Blood just had that sharp, focused point on Daniel Day Lewis' character that kept me riveted the whole time . . . a whole cast of people who know what they're doing? Or one tyrant that won't let go of your throat? I'd be happy with either one takin it all, actually.

Awards are always better with noms. Or more than one HM. It makes the winner seem like more of a winner. You claim to have debated for days but all we see are the same names showing up in every critic's circle. Show us the interesting performances argued! I'm sure you guys yelled about actors and actresses the other critics didn't consider!

Good picks, but a bit predictable.
by LoneGun
Dec 27th, 2007
02:12:02 AM
Those are nice picks, but a little predictable actually. I sort of hope that AICN might champion some of the less obvious choices, suggestions for the Academy, ones they might be less inclined to consider. BLACK BOOK, for example, was a remarkable film with a strong female lead performance. Yet it's not receiving the year-end accolades I expected it to. Gerard Butler totally took command of the screen this year in 300. Yet, no one is celebrating his star-making turn as King Leonidas. Perhaps, AICN could shine a light where others are not.

Some ideas
by BobPalpatine
Dec 27th, 2007
02:17:07 AM
This is a great idea, so much in fact that it's surprising AICN has never done it before. I like the "Different/Surprise" category, but how about more categories that appeal to the geeks? Set this Best Of apart from the rest of the pack. For starters include best VFX, and also add in some of the MTV categoris: best fight, best villain. How about best superhero movie or best "Comeback" flick (Rocky, Die Hard). Also Razzies would go well here: biggest letdown, biggest studio screwup for a project that should have been tits, etc.

To think that apparently the lot of you only found quality in two films. And, while I will give TWBB some props ONLY for Day-Lewis' performance (it is a very dreary film that few will watch again), NCFOM is simply overrated. Now I realize this is against the grain and everyone wants to sing praises, but I do not understand the overwhelming blind worship this film has. He should have been about 20 minutes shorter, there should have been some resolution for ANY of the characters so that you feel at the end that you have actually taken a journey as opposed to spending 2 hours to get right back where you started. I respect all of your views, but they seem to be a little biased given the repetition of your choices. Perhaps next year you should include a few of your guest columnists so the results are a bit more reflective of the entirety of film and not a few favorite directors / actors.

It's a cool idea having AICN awards, and i'd love it if you guys got proper award statues for it, maybe threw a proper party event for it, would be awesome.
However you need some more interesting and unique awards, otherwise it's not much different from all the other awards ceremonies. Also as others have said, i'm sure you all loved There will be blood and NCfOM but...so will the oscars, golden globes etc. Was there really nothing a little more unique/oddball?

Maybe have a "film you most enjoyed" award to go with best film, one can be a more objective, artistic award whilst the other for just what film you thought was brilliant.
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES
by brokentusk
Dec 27th, 2007
06:09:43 AM
This film is not getting enough attention, both on the awards front and on the year-end list front. It's like every critic has ADD and has already forgotten about this amazing film that came out earlier in the year. I haven't seen THERE WILL BE BLOOD, nor have I seen CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (I live in South Africa, we usually have to wait a while before getting the less-mainstream films out there). I'm sure all those films are just as good as people are making them out to be, but having seen THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, I find it hard to believe that people have forgotten about the amazing performances by Casey Affleck and Brad Pitt, as well as some of the best cinematography I've ever seen in film courtesy of Roger Deakins. Perhaps I'll change my mind once I've seen some of the films on these lists, but right now I really hope the Academy has enough sense to acknowledge the film. Honestly, when I walked out of the cinema I thought, "I just saw one of the films that will be nominated for Best Film." Looks like I may have been wrong, and that’s a shame.

SPOILERISH No resolution? The whole point of NCFOM is to show that Llewelyn (and his wife, etc) are mortal like everyone else. Anton of course will go on because he = Death (literally), and Ed Tom Bell has already lived his life before the film begins; he's not even a participant. He's just a witness to the almost mechanical process of death stalking the living, waiting for his turn. The last 20 minutes of this film was easily the most misunderstood bit of cinema all year. All these questions about why the murder took place offscreen, who took the money, what the Mexicans' involvement was, and what happened to Llewelyn's wife are kind of absurd considering all the answers are right there in the film. Easily the best film of the year, and I know that's a popular (and therefore dull and obnoxious) position to take. You can't even compare There Will Be Blood to this, tho. TWBB is beautifully crafted around Daniel Day-Lewis's performance piece, but it's ultimately hollow. I was kind of shocked at the lack of Plainview's development. He's essentially a static character. He gets more violent as the film progresses, but only out of necessity. He's still the same inside. The ending is a brutally absurd punchline that was too busy worshipping Kubrick to be genuine. I did like some of the tete-a-tete between DD-L and Paul Dano's preacher. Dexter's right about the 2-film storyline that's been happening lately. There were a lot more releases worthy of discussion than no country and there will be blood.

after seeing HARD CANDY. Not only is she a mezmerizing actor, she's also drop dead beautiful. Gorgeous! And, thankfully, legal.

Too bad her first big performance is in a pro-life / anti-choice propaganda movie. oddly enough, both JUNO and KNOCKED UP come off as anti-choice / pro-life propaganda. I would think that a self-avowed feminist like Page would be more careful about the underlying message being presented.

Why do movies have to display every agenda in order to be legit? I've noticed more and more people making commentary like this - is that what's cool these days, to get upset that a film doesn't share your personal views?

Art has its own agenda. You can feel free to disagree with the viewpoint of the artist, but you cannot expect a piece of art to make adjustments to itself. Well, I say that, but if you're actually Kim Jong-Il, than I suppose you can make as many demands as you wish.

I just made an observation. In addition, I'm not sure if its "cool" or not, but I've never been one to worry about popular opinion. I don't conduct my life according to the fickle whims and variable tastes of popular culture.

In all seriously though, all art has an implicit underlying political reality, or reflects the ideology, even in subtle ways, of the artist. Even a concious choice to not make a political statement is a political statement. I'm sorry if that makes you feel uneasy. But you know, this mortal coil, this veil of tears, isn't exactly known for making people comfortable. We merely endure, sometimes enjoy, and then pass on into eternity.

Giving him any award is such a pitty award. He has done much better work prior to No Country, but since it was forigen we don't care. I feel like this years award season is going to be a pitty fest for the Coen brothers, either they are going to sweep (Director, movie, screenplay). Or they are going get Fargoed (Screenplay, Supporting actor). I don't think this movie holds a candle to any of their Fargo and before work. But I'd rather see them get awards then say Paul Haggis, or the American Gangster crew. But come on, if any actor deserve any award from that movie its Josh Brolin, Javier is pretty much flawless in everything he's done, but Josh Brolin should be next in line for Dancing with the Stars. Yet he's in like every movie this year and they are all good. He's pulled a Travolta now lets hope he doesn't piss it away. Plus Javier is going to end up being the next Daniel Day Lewis of acting. Looks at the similarites of movies, The Sea Inside to My Left foot, Mohicans to No Country (just in how bad ass they both are). Opps I thought Javier was in Talk to Her, it was a diffeent Javier. Good movie though.

spoilers, spoiler, spoiled, etc... Jigsaw, I'm glad you liked the film but I think you missed the point in assuming that Sheriff Bell isn't a participant. Bell retires from being a Sheriff soley because he doesn't want to square off against Anton(the ending that all the yokels wanted, I'm sure with a Mexican standoff and Bell making off with the money). Bell keeps pointing out how ultra-violent America has become, how he can't even understand the level of brutality anymore. He visits his uncle, Ellis, a former lawman himself who tells a story of one of their family members being shot down on his front porch with his wife looking on... back in the 1880's. Bell realizes that it's not the criminals, but himself that can't hack it. (to paraphrase an IMDB post that summed it up well)When he tells his wife about the dream that he had about his own father—a dream in which his father, in an incarnation younger than Bell, carries a horn filled with light and rides forward into the darkness before him while Bell remains further back—the dream’s imagery suggests that Bell has become the first in his family’s line to puss-out. He has shown cowardice in the face of evil, and this behavior not only upsets the balance of forces that had existed for so long before, but it compels him to reassess his choice...to “wake up,” as his last words indicate. He realizes that he ultimately made the wrong choice.

BEST SOUNDTRACK- The film w/ the best music overall, not segregating a score from vocal music. WORKAHOLIC-The person with their name attached to the most quality films in one year. BEST SEQUEL/REMAKE/PREQUEL- They're coming out by the hundreds now, so might as well give 'em a category. BEST ACTION FILM- These hardly get their due despite their popularity. BEST REBOUND- Whether it be a sequel or remake that's better than its predecessor, or a person that improved the most over their last effort. That's about all I got, but I'm sure you can fill in some more of the *fun* variety (best nipple sucking shot, lesbian love scene, dismemberment, painful death, etc)

It doesn't make me uneasy knowing that artists can express themselves in the way they see fit. What makes me feel uneasy is that you seem to be unable to get past your own political beliefs when watching a film and choose to be so dismissive of opposing viewpoints. I'm sure you're pretty smart, but a lot of ignorant people display this mentality.

For someone who is supposedly pro-choice, you sure don't seem to respect that idea that JUNO having the child is a viable option. You, in fact, dismiss Page as not being a feminist because she starred in the film. That seems an awful lot like discrimination on your part.

Seems a little hypocritical to me.

Since you all can do whatever you want, is there a good reason to continue to break out the acting awards by gender? Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to me that an actor's work is essentially the same regardless of gender. We don't give out awards for best female director and best male costume designer, and so on (and even sugeesting it sounds offensive) so why continue to apply gender to the acting categories?

You know how some awards have one where the people get to vote. And you should name some awards after people. Like a Christopher Lee Lifetime Achievement Award. Or a David Lynch Award for the Weirdest movie. Stuff like that. Next year you guys should announce the noms in advance and then have a proper ceremony and everything. After all the HFPA are just a bunch of people who decide what they like and then throw a party. I don't see why you can't do the same. No idea what the award should look like though.

I second the inclusion of the different mediums since they do post things on this site about comics, tv, games, and so on. I think I prefer the segregation of the actor/actress performances just so that it gives more performances the oppurtunity to be recognized. Typically, there's only one director, costume designer, composer, screenwriter, but each film has multiple actors that deserve attention. What I would prefer in that respect is to continue to have best actor, actress, supporting actor and actress, and then also have a BEST PERFORMANCE category that way you're pitting the top 4 performances against each other regardless of gender or screen time.

Do not refelct this site at all. Unless this site is aiming to be the People.com/EW.com/trendy entertainment site. We need a best geek film/sex scene/death/bat shit crazy film. All this love for Juno makes me want to puke, sure its a good movie but it just feels all to trendy for trendy's sake, like an emo kid. I guess if the aim is to make this site feel more mature then sure. But come on, people of this site should know that the Coen's are capable of better. Just weak sauce all around, that list looks like you just cut and pasted another award list from some magazine. The only cool thing in that list was AICN DISCOVERY OF THE YEAR. Oh an surprise best forigen film goes to Guillermo del Toro, I know he didn't direct it but him and Harry are so close (in numerous categories) why didn't you just call it AICN Guillermo del Toro award goes to The Orphange for putting his name on it. Best Trailer = 300, you know that trailer got you so pumped. Then they decided not to use NIN music in the movie...let down, like this award list.

2007!!! besting the year the matrix sequels hit is no easy task, but 2007 managed to suck even more balls. Spidey 3 and PotC 3 were both huge disappointments. Pirates managed to salvage a bit of dignity at the end but Spidey sucked from start to finish. Meanwhile Fantastic Four continued to disgrace itself while making tons of money, and Die Hard went PG-13. The Borne sequel was my least favorite of the 3, and Transformers was even dumber than I expected and made me see why people hate Bay so much. Here's hoping 2008 lives up to the hype.

The Orphanage winning Best Foreign film? Del Toro? Harry's fave? Who'd have thunk it? Anyway, I'm not even sure if There Will Be Blood is out yet in my neck of the woods, but I saw No Country for Old Men and it was disappointing. To anyone who has never read the book or knows the story in advance I can't help but believe you will be thrown off and let down. I got the movie, I understood its message, but wow was this movie advertised wrong. The Misleading Ad Campaign Award goes to No Country for Old Men. For those of you who haven't seen it yet here's a spoiler free review. 1 hour and 40 minutes of some seriously interesting build up, to be topped off be a rug pulling 20 minutes of what the fuck? I can honestly say I did not see the last twenty minutes coming, it was by far the furthest idea of an ending I had in mind. But it was far from satisfying. I'm certain the book offered more internal monologue and detail on these characters that made the ending of the book more understandable and more moving. But not having read it...Hugely disappointing. Well I've ranted enough.

Bill Cosby Vs The Razzies
by ArcadianDS
Dec 27th, 2007

Uhm bear in mind that the year Bill Cosby won "best picture Razzy" for Leonard Part 6, he sued them in court for not getting his award. In a settlement, the razzies were forced to create a physical award made out of silver and diamonds (three diamond studded raspberries in on a pedestal) and ultimately, Cosby had the last laugh.

I would tread lightly when it comes to offering awards when there is actually no award - there is legal precedent.

...are just insecure about their own lack of vocabulary and literacy. It's part of the nation-wide Dumb-down America campaign that has been ongoing for many years. That's why intelligent people have felt shame for being well-read and tried to hide it, like the high school nerds who try to avoid making the dumb jocks in school feeling small, and then belligerent as a result, and why girls feel the need to act like airheads to attract guys because intelligent girls intimidate some people - the same people who accuse others of using a thesaurus when they hear a word they don't understand.

This is why on every street corner there's a man, woman, or child saying, "Yo, yo wassup shizzle be bizzle bo gizzle" like a brain-injured monkey. It's all part of the Dumb-Down America campaign. Don't fall victim to it.

have a BIGGEST DOUCHE AWARD!! Don't care if it's for a character or director or producer or whatever, but this one NEEDS to be a category, with LOTS of noms!!

Also, how about these for other categories:

Biggest Letdown, Biggest Shock Moment, Best Fight, The Hard-On Award (for the best FUCK YEAH!! moment of the year . . . see 300 for examples), Best Death, The Tear-Jerker Award (not for the saddest, but best moment that made everyone tear up . . . The Notebook woulda won that year, for example), New Best Friend Award(for the favorite character of the year, leading or otherwise), and definitely something for the worst of the year, like Biggest Refund.

As someone mentioned, MTV has some good categories, which is kinda wrong . . . this should be something for film fans like US, geeking out all over the place. It seems like focusing on MOMENTS in films from the year is better, rather than always picking the whole film . . . I know that can instantly multiply the noms by a million or so, but does anyone else feel that?

Am I the only one that liked Once more than Juno? Just checkin.

An award voted on by 4 or 5 friends is never going to hold any weight. You end up with the results you have here, pretty unadventurous choices (not bad choices by any means, but it could have come from a group of NY Times writers, and AICN has never been about being the same as traditional media).

First you need to have nominees not just winners, the nominees need to be decided by as wide a group of 'editors' as possible. Then you have to include the TBers in the voting process. Yes it is going to be tough to do without it being a shambles, I would require separate registration with a confirmation email to the address on file or something, and I would also count the TBers votes as 50% and the editors as 50%.

I know it is effort, and this site doesn't do effort, but if you have dreams of this being taken seriously, it can't just be 4 movie friends making a choice.

For the record - in the nominating process - my pick for top supporting actor was Casey Affleck for THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD - but Javier and Phillip Seymour Hoffman got more support on staff.

Also Moriarty and I voted for PERSEPOLIS, not ORPHANAGE for Best Foreign Film, but again - majority went the other way.

As for GEEKIER categories, we'll see. At this point, we are wanting to comment seriously upon the major awards as a collective. However, we'll consider it. As for Mr_X's prediction.... I don't go in for the Lapband till sometime in April/May from what the doctors tell me.

I wish there would never be another abortion ever again. Not going to trade a women's right to decide what she does to her own body to end abortions. I certainly would never suggest an abortion to anyone unless all other options are exhausted. It's OK to protect life while also protecting an individual's right to privacy.

Does anybody else start getting a little weary of every media outlet, Tom, Dick, and Harry giving out awards? You know, if you want to do something different, why don't you have Twenty Years Later awards. Call them the Perspective Awards or something. With the end of year rush, you see some genuinely embarrassing awards given out in the heat of the moment -- mistakes which surely wouldn't be made five, ten, or twenty years down the road. This self-generating awards-giving seems as much about ego as anything. Like Woody Allen said, "Awards... all they do is give out awards... Greatest Fascist Dictator: Adolf Hitler..."

by the beef
Dec 27th, 2007
02:09:19 PM
Most people here seem to agree that the list thing (while fun to read) can get monotonous. However, a HALL OF FAME type of competition would be interesting. You could follow the same guidelines used by the major sports HOFs, mix in your own criteria, change the eligibility from 5 years post-retirement to 5 years postmortem (since many people in the industry hardly retire, they pass on while still working) and you've got yourself an annual KINGS OF COOL (temp name) balloting thing goin'. You could involve the talkbackers, or not, somehow if you choose to. Maybe the first few years you could induct more than usual so you can get a bunch of the obvious choices out of the way quicker and start working on getting in the people that wouldn't typically receive the recognition (the 70s B-Movie stars, forgotten silent cinema masters, etc). Sound good?

Another thing I don't get about Ellen Page is that she doesn't just look like a 14 year old, she carries herself like a 14 year old. At least Knightley kind of acts like a grown up sometimes.

sorry watching THIRD MAN. To answer your question, LAPBAND is the route I have to take. I must take this radical step in order to insure the loss. This isn't the Gastric ByPass - which some people seem confused about. This is the same process that Guillermo DelToro had and has nearly a 100% success rate with 0 fatalities to date. It's also non-invasive and is an in and out surgery in a single day. With a very quick recovery.

I can lose 60 lbs doing what you advise - but once I hit about 70lbs lost - it always seems to level off and begin to gain back. This surgery means 130lbs lost in the first year - with an additional 75lbs lost in the following 7-12 months. Given I'm flirting with 400lbs - this is absolutely necessary.

Surgery is covered by my insurance, so it's no out of pocket. I've been approved, so I'm just going through the steps leading up to the surgery in April. Due to an old impact back injury - I can't do serious exercising till I pull about a 125 lbs off me. This will do that. And I can reclaim my physical self. It's all good.

As for short term memory. I don't have it. I saw THERE WILL BE BLOOD back in September. Most of the films you good folks saw in March and February - I saw in November and December of last year. Its just the nature of my job.

I will let you get back to Third man. Can I recommend two films for you to watch and maybe review. Bad boy bubby and equilibrium. Bad Boy Bubby is about a 35 year old man who never leaves his home and shags his mum and kills his cat and when he finally leaves the house is amazed at the world. And equilibrium stars C Bale and is similar to Minority report.

AICN Hands down. I surf around, I'm sometimes unfaithful, but I always come back to this bookmark. Next to Outlook, my blog, and facebook, this site has become one of my top daily stops. I love watching the talkbackers go at each other. I love the differences of opinion among the AICN staffers. Above all, I admire how the site congeals into a cohesive whole with strong voices and palpable leverage in the industry. It's all about the industry, this great puffing, churning, ceaseless money-making machine that, with no small amount of blood, sweat, tears, and talent, manages to produce stories that are worth telling, movies that are worth seeing. The strong voices here that I've begun to seek out, Moriarty, Quint, Massawyrm, the head geek himself -- your audience has grown with you and watched your writing styles evolve and mature, your tastes change over the years, and your indestructable will to dive into cinema coverage seduce and destroy the films, their makers, the industry, and your readers. I love the Coens, best filmmakers working today, original, unique, everything I want in a film. Love Lebowski, O Brother, Fargo, Crossing, all except Arizona, which felt like a Sam Raimi film (he co-wrote). Raimi is actually my favorite filmmaker, but I like my Coens, Coen, and my Raimi, Raimi, whatever that means. Anyway, I love the Coens, but after seeing No Country I don't want them to go back to their old stuff, this new path is amazing and perfect. There are few perfect films and it's open to interpretation of course, but to debate No Country is to suggest one really don't like movies, and there are few films you can say that about. It's perfect, I've seen it twice and can't wait to see it again. Perfect. And Deakins is the king. Haven't seen Blood yet, and I don't care for PTA, but the trailer looks amazing, and this site seems to love it, so it's worth a viewing...better than No Country, I doubt it, but I imagine that DDL rules again!

And it's a wonderful 'discussion' flick. Fun to talk about and to try to get below the various levels. The sort of thing you would come to expect from a Coen Brothers movie. I'm glad I saw it and want to see it again. That being said, I have a difficult time considering it to be a great movie specifically for the great divide it has created between its viewers. If it is TOO complex, or misinterpretable by its viewers, then it HAS done something wrong. And that, to me, lowers its credibility. Which doesn't mean it's a BAD movie. It's not. It just doesn't mean it's an award worthy film.

Mysterious Yobo, you are, by a definition, a real douche bag. That is my opinion, and I know you don't come to this site in search of these "opinions", but I'm giving it to you and the world anyways, because, well, that IS what this site is for. To be clear, it's anything you want it to be. You only vcome here to get a feel for the movies objectively before you see them? Okay, great. Well others come here to intereact with others that like movies and share what they think. I know Moriarty or Quint or Harry might not have the same opinions or think the way I think, but they all have their own personalities that really come across in their writing if you read each of them enough. You don't give a shit about that you say? Well whatever man, but don't come on here and say that these awards are bullshit and no one cares what "they think" about stuff. That's a blanket statement, and it's wrong, as blanket statements about stuff tend to be. The list was cool. I thought The Orphange was pretty lame actually when I saw it at Fantastic Fest, but hey, that's my opinion man. Good job AICNewsers.

I can't argue with your choices, but is this really the kind of awards program you want to sponsor? It's just one more out of dozens like it. Why not use categories that are more germane to AICN? You know, best screen homicide, hottest vixen, best comic book hero, etc. Yeah, I know it won't be taken all that seriously - neither are the raspberries or the MTV awards - but they're a lot of fun. I can see it now - The 2008 AICN Geek Awards. That should draw a lot of media attention. Maybe you could even let us loyal geeks in on the nominating and voting process. Do a live award ceremony. Tape it. See who shows up.
But Mori. I disagree with you as well.

(As is my right of course). Some say that the movie falls flat at the end, others disagree. Arguments that are, IMO difficult to deny on either side. I can't help thinking that the Coens did something wrong somewhere in this movie. That there were rules that they set up throughout the story, in what they do and do not show the audience, but then they discard those rules, and I cannot for the life of me, come to a conclusion as to WHY they did. As I said, I really enjoyed the movie, the characters and the story they told, but I also see this as an error in direction, and therefor, reducing its value among other great works.

Some of you need to stfu because you're talking shit about movies you have never seen and you look retarted. Why these movies don't get wide release is because assholes go see Alvin and the Chipmunks or National Treasure 2 in mass that is why. Anyway I am sad that Breach and Zodiac have been ignored for not only these awards but the globes which usually set the stage for the Oscars. Those two movies I found very interesting with great performances. I agree with a lot of people here about NCFOM because that actually seemed like an action movie more than a drama to me. For next year greatest trailer, baddie, and tit shots should be in it. for the record Hitman wins for tit shot horrible movie but a great pair on that Russian girl made up for it!

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly needs to be seen by all and really should be getting a lot more awards hype. It's been over two months and I still can't shake Eastern Promises. I imagine most talkbackers are seeing this for the first time on DVD, but the crowd reactions when I saw this opening weekend in a packed theater will not be forgotten by me anytime soon. A few walked out after the first scene. Which is so gangster. Oh, and the clothes in Cronenberg's other masterpiece, The Fly, are really fresh. Juno is good, cute, but not great. A good portion of the dialog feels forced and extremely self aware about how "hip" it was. Die Hard 4: Underrated. No Country: Overrated. Yup. Slept on: Control, Once, The Hoax, The Kingdom There Will Be Blood is the best movie I have ever seen.

Mmmhh. I must confess that my initial reaction to this aicn award thing was rather ...skeptical. Another group of people giving out awards? Later on I realized that the true reason for my negative feelings was the fact that this list of great films is another painful reminder for some of us people from overseas. Another hint that we'll have to wait another couple of WEEKS and MONTHS for TWBB and NO COUNTRY... But fuck my childish moaning. aicn awards is a great thing as long as the personal favs lists will live on...and MiraJeff won't be one of the voters. (I don't know what makes me dislike him. I don't remember this much hype for awards, i know theres always a bunch. But I think what put it over the top was the whole Dewey Cox making fun of it. It was funny yeah. But it just shows that with so many awards whats the point. They are trying to just sell movies with awards now (Charlie Wilsons war). Why bother trying to let us know what the movie is about just tell us how many awards its up for and I am sure people will see it. I do always love it though when a moive uses a AICN as one of its main promos.

Not that an agreement from me means anything, but I agree with your sentiment on art. Take Pink Floyd for example. Years ago they were asked what was the meaning of The Wall. The band members responded by stating that it had no singular meaning. Each band member interpreted it differently, and that was how they expected their fans to take it as well. They expected it to mean something unique to each of their fans.

That's what exceptional art does, it stimulates each of us in a different way...

Typical. I just think that if AICN is going to have awards, they should be a little emore original than Best Film, Best Actor, blah, blah, blah.

Let's remember, the reason The Academy Awards "used" to be so special is becuase there used to just be "The Academy Awards." Now there are awards shows and awards for "Best Film Maker Utilizing Legos as a Medium." The reason that no one gives a crap about awards shows is becasue there are sooo damn many of them. It just doesn't mean much to be the "Best" anymore. Ah well.

A movie site that just flat out ignored the ridiculous award/PR/hype culture that's developed around movies. No Oscar coverage, no Golden Globe coverage, just keep on talking about movies like the awards weren't even happening. I know it'll never happen, especially with popular sites as this one, but it'd be neat to see the internet setting a standard of just respecting the art, rather than riding the established media's coattails in worshipping the artists.

It's tragically easy to dispel this kind of blinkered thinking. Let's use contemporary conservatives as an example : mainly propped up by the massive swell of braindead evangelical christians, now excuse me but arent these preciesly the people who lobby consistently for a significant reduction in the rights of the individual to see, think and hear what they want, let alone do what they want (for instance what women choose to do with their bodies?!) It's simply not going to fly to pull this capitalist bullshit that conservatives somehow create greater choices by putting moula in your pockets whilst you turn your brain off to dogma. If you're talking about some OTHER kind of conservatism then your brain is so fucking politically warped then you're a lost cause anyway. Yeh Liberals have done bad shit too (and its a retarded stretch to include communist atrocities in that generalisation), but on the balance you pick a philosophy that you feel will serve human beings best. Looking at the shitstorm created by a decade of conservative rule in various countries does NOT support whatever revisionist historical BS wankers like you inevitably start blithering on with. Stay deluded for all I care..so long as the majority isnt as mentally warped we've got some vague hope.

Look Juno was a fine film, but guys please don't go overboard on praise for the screenwriter, and the film and Ellen Paige. Juno is a fine film with cute but good acting as well as good but sometimes a bit to hip or supposed to be cool dialoge. I did enjoy the dialoge by the way, but still the movie was obviously written by a gen Xer with all the references that i remember and to alot here i can see why it would come off as great wording. Juno is certainly a cut above the rest, but remember when Hollywood churned out movies of this ilk all the time? Well i do, but today when something good hits the screen it gets overrated sometimes. While i don't think Juno is going to get overrated except among the fanboys it was still a well put together film.

How could self-declared "film geeks" leave out so many other categories, specifically "Best Musical." So, here's a nomination: "Across the Universe." Saw it the other day at a second-run $2-ticket theater. Maybe it was the setting - that spacious, old, non-stadium type - that took me back to the theaters of my childhood, but this film blew me away. What a timeless work. And it was refreshing to not recognize most of the stars. (It was a bit jarring to see Bono, though.) One hell of a musical if you can still catch it in a theater.

Most overrated screenplay.
