You have to understand that Pan's Labyrinth is subtitled and anything that requires reading tends to fly over alot of people's heads. I'm actually curious as to how many of them post on here.

I guess some people get really upset when they have to read stuff during a movie. They're just subtitles.

Looking forward to giving Eastern Promises a rental sometime soon. I liked History of Violence for the most part so if this one is any better I should enjoy it.

i'm watching ads for the rush hour 3, kingdom and a few others and they are saying "own the dvd dec. 23rd" and i'm thinking " that's... that's a sunday." it's like those dickless ad execs are so desperate around the holidays now in this fucking pointless "format war", they are saying "go to church and be faithful...then go out and buy more dvd's." i don't get it. movies should never, ever have to released on a fuckin' sunday! it's a stupid marketing ploy that is further proof that this crazy world is more fucked up right now than it really is. everyone who started a "chain reaction" to a lot of bullshit this year should be able to look at the ten commandments again before they finally get it right for next year. christ. well, at least i get 3:10 to yuma for my 21st birthday.

Our DVDs are turning into HD COMBO DISKS.
by JDanielP
Dec 22nd, 2007
07:22:38 AM
Thanks to our tube television having problems and the heavenly upgrade to an amazing SHARP AQUOS, then experiencing HD content...via Xbox Live movie downloads (as time sensitive rentals)...I think we are slowly turning from HD movie "renters" into HD movie "buyers". I'm more excited about the upgrades than my wife. Understand, we have a HUGE dvd library. It won't compare to Harry's...but Hollywood loves me and my family, being the great consumers we are. FACT #1. We have no desire to upgrade every title. FACT #2. We purchased an upconvert dvd player, which plays our dvds to near HD levels. FACT #3. We have no desire to purchase a PS3. FACT #4. I prefer the film-like transfer of HD DVD. FACT #5. Warner Bros. and the remainder of the HD DVD family are going to make a mint from me and my family. FACT #6. Disney and various cartoon studios are making a mint from us already (as we have a child), due to standard dvd purchases and Xbox Live HD download-rentals. (Upscale of dvd is best on animation, as with any cell animation and computer animation from Pixar, in my experience. So we won't miss the Blu-ray Pixar releases, despite being huge fans of Pixar.) FACT #7. We have multiple dvd players in our house, so these "combo disks" on HD DVD are of the greatest temptations. FACT #8. HD DVD is perfect for me and my family. FACT #9. We will continue to download and rent some HD content via Xbox Live. FACT #10. As a family, it is hard for us to go to the movies. We must hire and/or arrange for a babysitter,...while we factor in the price of admission, popcorn and soda, cost of transportation, the time, the energy, and everything else. If movie studios were to release their movies via download rental (as with Xbox Live), they would get more business from families like us. --Wow, the unthinkable!
Continuing, it would be better said...

...that "we" prefer the film-like transfer to HD DVD, as we do. And as to FACT #10, I was referring to NEW major movie releases being available for download rental, as with Xbox Live. Me and my wife can't go to the movies like we used to. But we could certainly watch at home, in HD, on our heavenly SHARP AQUOS. Not only that, but we would PREFER it!

See, that right there is pure poetry.

In the future, Harry Knowels will be known as the greatest writer of the English language. New forms of quantum theories will be developed because of Harrys ability to string words together in such unusual, yet compelling order. Scientist are looking at the Top Cat sentence and are declaring "Those words put togeter in that order should not make sense, but my mind is enlightened"

Even now, as I think of "Chocolate Pussy Juiice" and "my fave is a TOP CAT punch out mask inside that makes you into one hip pussy dick!" fills my mind with horrors and pleasures not imagined by heaven or hell.

New Releases always come out early when a holiday falls on Tuesday. It's not a marketing 'ploy'. It's called a 'free market economy' aka 'good business sense'. People usually don't complain when they get something a few days early, but this IS AICN.... and anyone who thinks Pan's is less than a five star film should be beaten severely about the head and neck area with a Blade Runner briefcase. Seriously man, did you cut-and-paste that straight off a talking points list cranked out of Microsoft HQ up in Redmond before cashing your check? WTF do you mean by "film like transfer of HD DVD"? HD DVD and Blu-ray use the same video codecs, although Blu-ray has more titles using the AVC codec which is the best of the three (MPEG-2, VC-1, AVC] than does HD DVD, plus it has higher bandwidth so if done properly, Blu-ray has higher picture quality at the same resolution [1080p] than HD DVD. A "transfer" is a completely different thing...meaning that the studio either spends money on striking up a new film print to create a new master copy in high definition and/or they pay money to digitally scrub each frame of the film to remove all scratches, dust, and other imperfections to the film...which has been done on the Star Wars original trilogy and the Bond films. As for your biotching and claiming that Disney/Pixar movies are good enough upscaled from DVD, that is absolutely ridiculous. You can also claim your love of "combo" discs but all that does is price the HD DVD discs $5 higher than they would be and force Joe Consumer to pay for the license for the straight DVD copy on the flip side even if Joe Consumer does not wish to view the disc on a regular DVD player. That is why several of the Warner releases were $29.99 on Blu-ray and $34.99 on HD DVD, until Warners decided to cut their prices in a last-ditch effort to keep HD DVD relevant. You can also slag off on the PS3 but the FACT remains that your Xbox360 has a 33% chance of getting the red ring of death while us PS3 owners will continue to play our games and watch our Blu-ray movies while you wait 4 weeks for Microsoft to replace your defective-by-design console. Cheers.

I really dug that film regardless of what the critics said about it. And I can't pass up another title in high def featuring the goddess-in-the-flesh Monica Bellucci even if she plays a junkie hooker in this. As people have been saying in other threads, this flick is the probably closest we'll get to seeing Paul Giamatti in a gritty take of the Penguin too.

To talkbacker lynxpro, I wasn't attacking PS3 owners. I still own a PS1 and PS2 (the PS1 is in a closet and the PS2 is in the boys room, used only as a dvd player). I'm simply relaying my experience, slowly jumping on board the HD market. I did so because it might help others in the same position, in giving them more options than they might otherwise consider. If I cared to own a PS3, then Blu-ray would likely have my interest. But in the boat that my family is in, in already having a huge dvd library, and in having access to Xbox Live, we were able to witness HD content on our new SHARP AQUOS. And it is simply a stunning picture, which I feel rivals going to the movies. And in purchasing a separate player, HD DVD is what I want. You can talk all that technical shit all you want. But from what I have personally witnessed and read and experienced first hand, I choose to download HD content...and on occasion, I'll be checking out those HD COMBO DISKS...and everything else available on HD DVD. Honestly, it's perfectly alright to dislike the path I've chosen. Enjoy your Blu-rays. I'll enjoy my downloads and HD DVD titles AND upscaled DVDs. Live long and prosper.

You know, as much as I dislike HD DVD, I'd have to say it is a better alternative than Microsoft's even-more-favored Xbox Live Marketplace commercial HD downloads. Those HD downloads are even lower bit than HD DVD and they only max out at 720p. Maybe your SHARP AQUOS - $5 fee for product placement - is only a 720p flat panel, but there's a world of difference between 720p and 1080p. The point is, regardless of the codec involved, HD DVD has a low bit rate transfer for 1080p than Blu-ray, and an HD download is even worse than that [but better than upscaled DVD]. I certainly have no love for Microsoft, but I also would not be downloading commercial HD content from Apple's iTunes either [whenever they start offering it] because again, it would only be 720p and at the current prices, its not worth the difference between those options and a Blu-ray disc even if priced at $29.99. There's no resale value for a download, unlike either of the two competing physical formats. Furthermore, the downloads keep you trapped in a specific proprietary ecosystem. But as always, YMMV.

...then I suggest you consider picking up "LEGO STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA" (available for various platforms). We actually considered TRYING to FIND/purchase a Wii ...but discovered the joy and delight of sharing the NEW Lego STAR WARS game on the Xbox 360, playing along with our young son. It's so simple and fun to play that...not only does the boy play quite well (though needs help in more challenging areas), but even his mom gets in on the action. And it gave me that Mario fix that I was craving, on our (already purchased) Xbox 360. And the graphics are very nice, along with all the unlockable characters to choose from. Force Lightning is very cool...except when my boy is zapping the hell out of me. If you parents would like to play a fun game with your children, consider this latest LEGO STAR WARS title. It's a hoot!.

And when the time comes, we will purchase an even larger LCD...and move our current one to the bedroom. We will look at all tv brands, when that time comes, as only a smart shoppers would (especially at such prices). But we most certainly won't overlook the same brand that we're so happy with. Honestly,...it has the silkiest, smoothest picture we've ever seen. You can talk until your head turns blue, ...Ray (heh, heh), ...but we love how HD content looks on our tv. About 5 people have HD DVD players. Go Fuck yourself. Stop Posting the HD versions of these releases. Are they available on Regular DVD? A little sidenote about your HD perversion, That's not the format these movies are meant to be watched in. When you go to the theater, is a 35mm projection in HD? Or is it just a 35mm projection, where there are soft edges on the contours of the subjects in focus? HD makes the contours of everything way too sharp thus removing all dimension. People in HD movies look like paper figures. You can take your HD and fuck it. Fuck your ass, Harry. Fuck your ass.

Now tomorrow I'm gonna make him watch Sicko and An Inconvenient Truth. hehe

I didn't dislike the film, but when Moore started to insinuate that France had some sort of modern utopia that the U.S. Government was trying to demonize, I just couldn't stop (to roll my eyes) and think of all those riots that occured across most of Europe not too long ago.

I think it is unfair to belittle runfoodrun because of a small error in spelling. I'm sure many of us have done the same. Show of hands! Which of us has distyped, disspelled, or even disspoke in public? I know I have. That being said, runfoodrun's opinion on Pan's Labyrinth is very misheartening and though I misagee it IS his opinion. I just wish he could give it another chance because it is he who is dissing out.

Not because of Sony's "trojan horse" PS3, but major studios like Fox, (Star Wars,Die Hard,Predator, Aliens,etc.)Sony/MGM's impressive library and now Warner Bros offically backing the format. I don't really care for Paramount's decision to exclusivley support HD,and for the record Transformers sucked like a $5 crackwhore from Newark NJ. (not that I would know, but it was a funny comparison.)

Newark is okay, but you'll find a finer selection of crackwhore hookers at Hunts Point in the Bronx, at competitive prices. And they offer a wider variety of services - just ask for a brochure. Be on the lookout for Anchorite's mother, though. Her toothless blowjob is in high demand.

I think Sicko is far from perfect and yes, Moore tends to exaggerate to make his point, but I keep recalling the scene where the poor, disoriented woman was dropped off on the sidewalk near a free clinic by Kaiser Permanente because she had no health insurance. That was no fiction - that was the worse thing I've seen about our healthcare system in a long fucking time.

One Way to Tell a Movie is Truly Great
by emvan
Dec 23rd, 2007
10:28:03 PM
The comments here by people who didn't like it, no matter how brief, are obviously and laughably clueless.

Like the guy who said Pan's Labyrinth had no end, when it had one of the most brilliant and powerful endings in the history of movies, conceptually. We are given no clues as to whether the fantastic events are real or delusional; the movie admits both interpretations equally. If they are real, the movie has an absolutely perfect fairy-tale ending that plucks joy from tragedy, the archetypal "eucatastrophe" as Tolkien coined it, but if they are delusional, the ending is intolerably cruel. Therefore we as viewers are forced to regard the ambiguous events as fantastic, and thus the movie becomes cinema's single greatest statement on the role of fantasy as necessary escape (as Tolkien pointed out in the same essay, escape is not a bad thing if the escape is from jail). So it's not just a great story, but it tells us why we need great stories.

Run, I presented you with an argument in the form of a question. And you whined and brought up something irrelevant about fan boys. Yawn. When you're ready to sit at the adults table, please come. Emvan, your intepretation is very similar to mine with maybe some slight tweaking. Run, read Emvan's post and ruminate on it. Then you might at least see why intelligent folks found "Pan" fascinating and worthwhile. And even sober, your writing is barely intelligible. Or maybe I'm just disguided and distaken.

'riots across most of Europe'? If by 'most of Eaurope' you meant 'Paris', then I suppose you're right. And that was about minimum wage jobs and unemployment, not the healthcare system, but whatever.

emvan, that's a pretty good interpretation of the PL ending. I agree, but I hadn't made the connection with Tolkien's 'eucatastrophe' theory, that's pretty good. I must re-watch that film over Christmas. Have you guys (Pan's Labyrinth lovers) all seen The Devil's Backbone? A great companion piece to PL (though the fantastic elements lack the ambiguity of PL; it's more of a straight up ghost story) and absolutely brilliant film.

Hmmmm....basically I have no idea what you are talking about, but Merry Christmas. I really have no issue with Pan's except that i didn't enjoy it, and I really don't like Del Toro's movies, but I loved plenty of films that aren't all that intelligent so whatever, I think it's fun to get fanboys up in arms about Del Toro, you'll never change my mind, and I find his movies to be great visual fun, but not great stories, not City of God, Oldboy, Children of Men, The Prestige, etc, not great stories, but fun, sometime visually interesting, but that's about it. Keep flaming if you want, but seriously check out some Peter Greenaway if you want to really have to think, Del Toro is a very mainstream guy, come on, Hellboy, Blade, not exactly taking chances or changing cinema, not bad, just not out of the box no matter how much you'd like it to be, sorry, I've just watched to many films to be impressed by him, it's my opinion and like yours it's valid. Great year for movie now and coming up, No Country, There will be blood, TDK, etc, great year, so let's not get out panties in a bundle over a decent, but not revolutionary film, which I will argue that No Country is...

and enough on the personal attacks, PL, is not an adult film, come on, even the marketing sold it as a LOTR type film, which was heavily marketed to kids, yes kids. As far as my writing goes...we'll that would be a personal attack it I kept going, so I'll stop, I'm here to debate PL, not attack, so why not offer me something rather an I'm not an adult, or I don't get it, in response. The movie is half-baked, doesn't know what it wants to be, and waste an opporunity to be truly great because of poorly realized characeter, there is no development, nothing that is a unique or a suprise about the plot, sorry, give me something, don't just attack my writing...

just joking - yeah it's cool - another videorental store in-a-box. $400 though, and that's before you even rent or buy any movies.

As for the "HD" bit, did you read the stuff? At the moment it's only 480p. Even xbox live's 720p is sort of bullshit because true HD/ 1080p actually has DOUBLE the picture info. Not to mention the net stuff is still horrendously compressed. Give it a few more years I reckon. And walk to the store, ya lazy bum.
