Dec 20th, 2007
02:41:08 PM
I realize that Pan's Labyrinth was one of Del Toro's most recent (and acclaimed) films, but was it really necessary to cite it at the beginning of this preview? Considering this is a sequel and not a "new endeavor," the need to give the movie "street cred" seems a little silly. On the other hand, if they're trying to entice the art-house crowd, I just don't think this is their kind of movie.

holy cripes! HELLBOY returns, with the all too cool Del Toro back back back to the top! I hope there are some scenes with LOBSTER JOHNSON. Hellboy came from the pits of hell, and RON PAUL is going to get this country out of hell, by GETTING RID OF TAXES!!! how? he will close down the fed, close down the IRS, and NO MORE TAXES! thousands of dollars of YOUR money stays in YOUR POCKET! he will end all foreign troop deployment, saving TRILLIONS from the military industrial complex! lets give a big hand for del toro for bringing back HELLBOY, and in 2008, Hellboy is going to dominiate the movies, and i am going to VOTE FOR RON PAUL!

by Tourist
Dec 20th, 2007
02:43:41 PM
...with Delo Toro being massively overrated. I don't think I've seen any film of his I would say is "Good". Jesus, not even well made. They all have a really overlit and colour timed look I seem averse to. It's strange though, I went to visit my dad the other day, who pretty much hates movies in general, and he asked me if I had seen Pan's Labrynth, since he loved it. I may just completely live on a different astral plane to Del Toro and his fans. Should not I'm not obese. Note, all these summer tent pole flicks you are geeking about are sequals, remakes or adaptations. Mostly sequal and remakes. So the coming summer will rival nothing. Thank you.

Hopefully this one is much better. Overall scope certainly looks bigger (which I know doesn't automatically equate to better). Still, they have my ticket money. I really like Perlman, and want this movie to be good. As far as this versus a sequel to Serenity - in all honesty, I'd rather watch the first Hellboy than Serentiy again. I loved Firefly, but the movie wasn't good - it forgot to entertain.

Seriously, is the general movie-going population really clamoring for a Hellboy sequel? I was underwhelmed by the first one...some nice visuals, but he kept having the same stupid fight with that same stupid hell dog over and over again. In a summer where he's up against Indiana Jones, Batman and Iron Man, I'm not sure people are going to get all that excited about Hellboy.

...I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of Elric. Is that Luke Goss? Isn't he in this movie? If that's him, he just crept onto a two-entry casting wishlist I haven't thought of since the poster for Clan of the Cave Bear, which gave me visions of a vocally altered Darryl Hanna in the role of Elric. It would have been a weird enough idea to suit the character and his world, I think. And since she just gets more masculine looking with age, she would be even better for the role now. Just a random thought, triggered by the sight of that vampire/albino/Jeremy Irons looking guy, who has to be Luke Goss. He seems like Elric combined with an improvement on Tom Cruise's Lestat. Or maybe how Legolas might have looked if he'd smothered Frodo in his sleep one night and taken the ring for himself. Or not.

The 4th guy is Johann Kraus. He was a medium who lost his body. So, he's like a ghost in a suit. Say what you will about the first movie, but I loved it. The comics are even better, and this film looks like it's even more in line with Mignola's world. All things considered, I'd rather see a new story than the Joker reinterpretated for hundredeth time.

Looks as fantastic as the first one! What a concept, the characters once again actually look the way they do in the comics and still function in a “reality” (over used word to describe a comic book movie) based world. Pay attention Nolan, your Joker is lame and your Batman is wearing action figure armor. Del Toro, you rock thanks for delivering again and for not treating comic book readers as suckers.

Um... Yes, I agree that Pan's Labyrinth was troubled, largely because it looked at the Marco years of Spanish fascism through a very foreign lens, but you forget one thing... THE MONSTERS! Pan's Labyrinth is a good movie with men-in-suit, that uses the latex to actually heighten the storytelling. Of all the directors to use monster make-up, has anyone ever used it to such dramatic or seamless effect? THAT'S why people love Del Toro - it's the MAN-IN-SUIT love!

...which is a long and probably not as clever as intended way to say I thought Hellboy was trying too hard to be X-Men when it should have been trying to be the Devil's Backbone. If this turns out to be more like Pan's Lab, that's good, because the whole time I was watching PL, I was thinking, "This is what Hellboy should have looked like." Hellboy is 90% atmosphere, 10% actual plot. Or something like that.

And, please, there is nothing- nothing- mediocre about Blade Runner. Who gives a fuck if they come out with 10 versions- the least of these would be superior to Hell-fuckin-boy. Lame concept from it's inception, and now lame in celluloid form. Blade Runner= timeless art (PKD story, Ridley Scott's uncompromising vision, brilliant, prescient futurism). They'll still be talking about Blade Runner in 20 years. Hell Boy? Not so much.

the whole design element. you hit on something good, then, if you use it again, you're either lauded for having a style or derided for repeating yourself. i think del toro does a nice job of interpreting mignola's beautiful work, but, again, if he deviated, everybody would be yelling that he didn't stick to his guns. or something like that.
Okay, the next asshole who carps about aspect ratios gets bitchs
by Lobanhaki
Dec 20th, 2007
08:08:07 PM
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE RIGHT ASPECT RATIO. It all depends on the intent and the style of the filmmakers. What is true, and should be considered is that different screen widths can have different effects on how a film looks, and how the compositions are arranged and perceived. That said, there are masterpieces in all kinds of aspect ratios. Practically anything before 1950 is 1.33:1. That's why we got the screens on TV we got. Then they went widescreen, to try and top television, which was eating into their market. That meant 70mm productions, that meant Anamorphic, that meant matted widescreen. Long story short, they found ways to broaden the screen past what the boob-tube could do. So what does this come down to? It depends. Widescreen does good landscape, epic action, that sort of thing. But if you want more intimate close ups, 1.85:1 is good. However, these aren't hard and fast rules. They're tendencies. There are great action movies and fantasies in 1.85:1, and there are brilliant movies of the same kind in 2.35:1. The creativity of the storyteller is what matters, more than the width of the screen.

He has more scruples than to associate himself with this level of film.

And, lastly, the only good part of the soundtrack occurs 1/4 of the way in- a 2 part orchestral swell (after the line "It's not your imagination"): completely derivative (read: stolen) from the Batman Begins score.

What I liked were the cool sword fights. What I didn't like were the lines by the main characters. They seem to be maintaining consistency with the last film and presenting their characters as deadpan, dead-eyed inflectionless morons. Can Selma Blair express her inner pain in some way more interesting than staring like a zombie? Did they insist that Ron Perlman do all his voice work encased in that rubber head, so it was impossible for him to enunciate properly? The central characters need to be identifiable with. They need to show human emotions. I'm not seeing that here.

...Thinking back to that year, I loved Children Of Men, United 93, The Queen, Half Nelson, and probally a whole host of others I can't remember. While I didn't mind Devils Backbone, but certainly wasn't that engaged by it, I really didn't like Pan's. It seemed so cookie cutter to me. I know that sounds strange, but the strict, tight laced step father villain, the kindly, but poor maid who of course had to have a brother/father/lover/whatever in the resistance...I don't know, felt really stale and uninspired. Even on a production level, it looked like plastic. Which is why I don't get Del Toro at all. Hey, maybe I just don't gel with spain, since I can't stand Almodovar either.

But my god does all that look fake. Imo, don't release a trailer until you've got the effects finished. That last monster sequence screams halfbaked work, and backlot. Angel of Death looks awesome, Elric Goss looks great, and love that first line delivery- great spear/sword weapon too. WTF was up with that horribly awkward team line-up shot. Johann looks cack in that cheap diving containment suit. Is it just me or is anyone else sick of that puce, bogey green filter Del Toro used in pretty much all his movies?? How about some blue/black/red like in the comics???? It's not damn chiarascuro enough, and I'm amazed Mignola doesn't slap him for it.

If you think Blade 2 was anywhere close to being better than the original. That opening fight sequence wipes the floor with everything in Del Toro's effort. Like I said, he's got an immense imagination, but the dude needs to tie it to a decent plot, rather than shoehorning designs and character in just because they look good or make nice bangy noises.

Nice tip o the hat there (thanks FilmFunk for pointing it out). Not a great trailer but it's Del Toro and I expect there'll be a couple of Trailer Revisions with more plotty type stuff/action/better music. All in all, not looking too bad. Selma Blair (never liked her) does look quite the hottie in this.

i think del toro did exquisite work with pan's labyrinth and most storytellers should be so lucky to hit the nail on the head like that. i also think he's still got some development ahead of him and if he ever gets to 'mountains of madness' i bet it could be the masterwork of a fully-fledged director. he's got his team, he's got his style, he could finally fuse the greater subtlety of his spanish-language films with the more typically-done english-language films. and now i have completely overanalyzed the situation and will only now say that it is frakking john hurt in the trailer, i just listened to it again, he's listed as cast in the movie and i'd know that voice anywhere.

occula, I actually just think there is loads and loads of praise here in the talkback, but not with a lot of supporting reasons. I think we need people like Del Toro & Jackson in the industry, but at the same time think they need to mature even more in their delivery. Cookie-cutter was a description I read above, and it describes both of them for the majority of their work. The difference is, they are both very good at keeping the production design colorful and true to source, unlike most other cookie-cutter directors. Maybe maybe maybe.

yeah i hear you. i think a superhero movie is always a tough nut to crack; what if del toro hadn't done blade and hellboy? (OK blade isn't a superhero but you know what i mean) what if after 'mimic' he'd just done spanish films and become this auteur? everybody would kiss his ass, right? but he is actually sort of a cross-genre director, which is tricky. as a designer i know how hard it is to apply your own sensibilities to different types of work, based on people's expectations rather than your own desires. i do think del toro has it in him to be - as they call him in the trailer - 'visionary.'

If you don't mind a spoiler here's his story. He used to be a medium for spirits and his spirit would leave his body while others used it to commune. However, one time when he left his body a bomb or something hit (I forget exactly why) destroying his physical being but since his spirit was gone he was, in a sense, still alive. He's kind of made up of ectoplasm and stuff and wears the suit to keep shape. It's a pretty cool idea for a character if you ask me.

I mean....everytime Del Toro releases a movie, theres so much hype around it. Everyone claims its his masterwork, its the best movie ever, Del Toro really pushed the envelope etc...IIt started with Mimic. I saw it in theaters...wish I hadnt. I actually liked the first sequel to Mimic better but I digress. Then came Blade 2...it got the same type of hype and Harry's infamous review. I found it to be not bad but not a single scene in it could even rival the opening ten minutes of the original. Then saw Devil's backbone....just stared at the screen completely unmoved. Then came Hellboy...it wasnt bad..just did nothing for me. Felt like a movie I had already seen. Never got around to Cronos. I was about to avoid Pan's Labyrinth but saw it for free and was pleasantly surprised, but not enough to understand the ever present hype around the guy. Granted I didnt see Cronos, but could someone please explain to me what the big deal is? Or is it just one of those either you get it or you don't deals?

It pulled a neat 99 Mill worldwide, in addition to another 60 or so in DVD sales. For a film with a budget of roughly 66 million, that's a decent enough profit for a studio to make the decision to greenlight a sequel.

..I consider a budget of 66 mill to be very lacking, because Mignola writes a large ammount of world-spanning, creature-filled, rich stories. In the current world of HUGE budget films ( I am legend cost 150 mill to make ), A sstory as huge as Hellboy needed something larger to be as good as it wanted to be. Of course, on the other hand, getting a third-string studio to even budget an almost unknown comic book character film, even in the current 'comic book movie boom' market, is a miracle on it's own
Trouble with Hellboy as a character ...

He's got no wonder. He takes everything in stride, punches it, or pulls out his gun and blows holes in it. That's funny maybe once or twice, but the joke gets old pretty quick. And if you pair him up with sidekicks that react even less than he does... you don't have anyone to identify with in the movie. Unless you root for the monsters. Again, I shudder at Selma Blair's dead face in this ... she's acting exactly the same as in the last flick. That agent with the flashlight in the trailer doesn't help either. What is he? He's got cracking walls, and skittering wierdness, and he doesn't seem to react until he's attacked? There's too much deadpan Coolness in this movie, just like the last one.
And as for the look of the movie ...
by Ringwearer9
Dec 21st, 2007
05:32:53 PM
In spite of the fact that I like the creature designs, and the action (and I actually like the tentacled Beasty vs. Hellboy scene) the overall look of the filmed image is .... soft. The colors seem to be dominated by Red/yellow and Blue (with a bit of occasional Green). And none of the colors are vivid, or stand out. They are all muted, shadowed. This means that, no matter how cool the action scenes may be, the look kinda washes out details. I find it hard on the eyes. Dark muted colored charactes fighting against dark muted backgrounds. Muted Bluisness and Muted Reddish/Yellowishness. We are still in the CGI-friendly Dark Ages, folks.
Hellboy's appeal lies in its joyful quirkiness
by Clancy Van Lustbader
Dec 21st, 2007

People complained that the first movie wasn't as sock 'em dead as a lot of action films but, really, that's what Hellboy is. It's an odd, quirky (that word again), tongue-in-cheek take on superheroes, action-adventure, pulp stories and the occult. It's never really been about the payoff, more about seeing how wacky and loopy you can get with the whole brew from a stylistic and thematic standpoint. Well, specifically it's Mignola coming up with a bunch of stuff he thinks is cool (which I largely happen to concur with) and then just having fun with it. There's a distinct charm to the whole concept but it's not for everyone. Personally I think Del Toro did a great job making the first film as enjoyable as it was considering what a dreadful bastardisation it would have been in other hands. He was working within limitations (catering to a mainstream audience, keeping suits happy etc.) and I thought he did a fine job. Personally I think this one is gonna be even better because the hard groundwork has already been done. As for Skinjob and Blade Runner, fuck it, why even go there? Hellboy isn't Blade Runner isn't Star Trek. Why even compare them? If you can't see what a fundamentally awesome idea Hellboy is then you're imaginatively impaired in my book and I feel sorry for you.

Yeah, a good deal of the colors are muted, and the movie does look dark. It's the closest you'll get to a director trying to make an exact replica of the look/colors of a comic book source, next to going the Sin City route. I'm not saying the opinion isnt valid, but the comics themselves are dark looking and washed out. I've never seen an artist use so much black ink in a color comic book.

I'm not trying to hate or anything. I mean the guy seems to have a fan base, I just never really enjoyed any of his movies and I think thats because they are all hyped up as HIS BEST MOVIE EVER. Kinda like Eli Roth's made 3 movies and the first Hostel was noted as being so much of a director's evolution and the second one was considered even more of a growth...and we all know how that turned out. Not that I would ever put Del Toro in the same category as ROth no matter hoe much his films have never really moved me. And for the record...why does everyone think Blade two was so good? If you stop to watch it and think about it...its really only 3 extended scenes. The beginning felt like one long expository introduction, the middle was just a big fight at a vamp club, and the end was just the ending fight...but they were all really really long....just had to get that off my chest.

...but I actually agree with ringy-poo about one thing, namely how utterly heinous Selma Blair is. She's cute as hell and hot (for a self-confessed chainsmoker, anyway) but she couldn't act to save her life. For some reason geeks have given her an eternal pass despite the fact that there has never been a cinematic example of her ever letting a single emotion register in her expression. In The Fog she managed to make the wooden duo of Tom Welling and that Grace chick seem like Tim Roth and Dame Judi Dench.

It's the lack of variety. But that's not really the problem ... I love properl filmed black and white .. What I mean is that the colors are insufficiently different from eachother in order to provide contrast with eachother. If all the colors are kinda dark and fuzzy it's hard to see details against one another. It's hard to tell the different colors apart. Makes the big action scenes a bit harder to follow. Now, sure, it all takes place at night, and in the dark, but plenty of movies have been made that suggest darkness while still lighting things enough to make them easy to see. EG: Raiders of the Lost Ark's night-time scenes. I don't know what would fix it... more attention to lighting effects? Maybe they are trying to avoid visual conflict between the CGI and the real characters, so they underlight everything so you don't notice that the CGI lighting effects don't look as good as the ones for the real actors. Oh well. Maybe it'll look better in the theater.

by Ringwearer9

You may be right that they are trying to replicate the coloring of the comic book, however, the comic book used heavy black outlining to define the characters and objects in it. Also, the pictures in a comic are static, so the eye can pause and figure out the details even when he's being artistic and suggesting shapes rather than outlining them. In a live action film, though, that color scheme defeats the eye somewhat. For an example of a film that adapted the look of a comic book and still managed to make it watchable, see SIN CITY. An example of "Loyal to the look" but hard to watch would be "300". With the exception of the dancing oracle scene.
