the Evil Dead with all the coolness sucked out of it. The independent film-making spirit traded in for something safe and corporate. If Spiderman 3 hadn't been so bad who could have begrudged him a smaller fun, film? But as a Rami fan you just want him to hit it out of the park again and a PG spook-a-blast doesn't get the hopes up.

Why is it that these days there's this belief that all gory horror movies are mindless slasher flicks? Now it's either GRAPHIC VIOLENCE or the old "we think it's scarier to not show the violence, aren't we unique?" deal. Why does it have to be one or the other? There was a time when a horror flick could be both bloody as hell -and- intelligent and artistic. Not even Kubrick shied away from the plasma in his horror movie. So all the "your mind can make far scarier horror than any special effect" douche bags can go fuck yourselves. Right up the ass. That is all.

are plastic and shallow, they have about 0% rewatchability, i don't know where they fucked it up since i expect less out of a spidey movie than a superman/batman, they should have called it Peter Parker instead of Spiderman since that's where most of the concentration seemed to go. how much nauseating angst and sentimentality can one take? how much more wisdom from Aunt "dried saggy pussy" May can one take before he starts tearing his eyes out? Spiderman was a blank here, not the wise-cracking joker of da books

that nobody wants. Hated that film with it's crap Keanu Reeves' southern accent and generally high levels of boredom. This new borefest is undoubtably a throw away piece of junk designed to cleanse Raimi's palate before he moves onto the next phase of his career, i.e, the Hobbit films. p.s. Spiderman 3 was pretty cool until Venom turned up. Had a kinda trippy vibe to it. Shame Venom had to turn up and ruin the last 40 mins. They should have held him back for the 4th film and fleshed out the character a bit more.

No movie since then has fucked me up more than The Evil Dead...So Mr. Raimi, I beg you, fuck that shooting one of those tame, p.c. (less is more) bullshit - BRING THE PAIN BITCH! By which I mean his films don't look professional. I have to agree with Prossor above, Raimi's SPIDER-MAN films become worse the more you watch them. Maybe if he goes back to his horror roots this film will be decent, but all I know is that I hope he has nothing to do with THE HOBBIT. His directorial style and obsession with corny moments will ruin the film.

... someone who feels the same way I do about the Spider-Man films. Personally, my favorite one was the 3rd one (deus ex machinas and the lachrymose Sand-Man aside) because it was the darkest one out of all of them. Don't get me wrong, I like all 3 of the Spidey movies, but there is certainly a nauseating element in repeated viewings of the films. It seems like the more you watch them, the more you get the feeling that you're watching a yuppie romantic drama with the Spider-Man story as the concomitant sub-plot. I feel that the franchise needs a new director, and I think Steven Spielberg or James Cameron would be best suited to direct the next one.

have no brains! So he made one film, Spidey 3, that missed the mark. Spidey 2 is one of the top 5 if not 3 comic book films ever, so the studio gets involved, shoe horns in Venom, and the movie lacks because of it. Yes, Spidey 3 lacked the visual punch of the first two, but come on, one bad film doesn't ruin a career or mean a guy has lost it. Judging from these talkbacks, most people here defend directors who have made a career of directing marginal films.
Raimi Destroyed Spiderman!!

My favorite comic hero of all time and Raimi ripped Spiderman to pieces. Toby Mcguire sucked (face it). Watch Toby's top lip...the fucking thing doesn't move. And as far as that other girl in the movie..well I've seen better acting out of a blow up doll in the wind. The voice for the hobgoblin?!! What the fuck?!! He sounded like a teenage kid working in a haunted house running around dressed as a power ranger. All three movies were hard to watch. And trust me, after that first horrible Spiderman movie I saved my money and rented the other two. Raimi is not right for Hobbit.

And you certainly need it to get more of it. But if you don't already have any of it to begin with, you can't get any of it to get started, which means you really have no idea how to get it in the first place. Do you? You can share it, shure. You can even stock pile it if you'd like. But you can't fake it. Wanting it. Needing it. Wishing for it. The point is, if you've never had any of it, ever, people just seem to know.

you can tell that movie had so many hands on it and tons of pressure from studio execs. 1. They wanted Venom. Raimi didn't want Venom. Raimi doesn't understand why people like Venom. You can see that on the film.2 The only way possible for that movie to have worked is for it to have a 3 hr running time or have been split in two different movies. That would have been the only way, but do you think the studio would have wanted that?...Either way anything that raimi has had a passion for and completely understood has been excellent. The Hobbit will be spectacular, and to tell you the truth it won't seem that different from the previous LOTR because Peter Jackson's and Sam Raimi's style are not all that different.

I actually liked the character of Eddie Brock, but Venom was too much too late. I would have preferred more of Sandman. Other than that it was a damn fine movie, yes even "emo" Peter. Because, guess what, it was supposed to be funny. You know, you're supposed to have a sense of humor. It also allowed Raimi to mix genres, which he does so well in the Spiderman movies. Dropping a Tex Avery-like moment in the middle of the film was unexpected genius. The film wasn't perfect but it was on the level of the first Spiderman, if not as near perfect ast Spiderman 2.

Because I don't think I could emotionally handle one of my favorite directors hitting the wall.

Spider-Man 3 was shit. It was campy, hammy, hackneyed, over-hyped, under-edited CRAP. I tried to watch it a second time-- for FREE-- and I couldn't make it through the whole film.

Compare that to "The Quick & The Dead", which is just a fucking brilliant flick, and of course the Evil Dead movies and all of Raimi's other work prior to Spider-Man 3, and it's just a horrible to shock to see a director I thought could do no wrong DOING SO VERY, VERY WRONG!

So please, Sam... I hope whatever was bugging you when you made Spider-Man 3 is out of your system, and you can go back to making movies that don't suck.

And by the way, I do realize that Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness had their share of cheeze, ham, and goofs, but those were SUPPOSED to be horror/comedy. Spider-Man 3 was not meant to be a musical comedy spoof, and yet I could not help thinking I'd be seeing Forbush Man or Spider-Ham in there somewhere. He fucked up. The whole cast fucked up, too, because somewhere, at some time, one of them should have slapped Sam and said, "Sam?!?! What the fuck are you doing?!?!"

Note: "Cheeze" is a non-dairy artificial cheese product.

THE EVIL DEAD. EVIL DEAD 2. ARMY OF DARKNESS. DARKMAN. A SIMPLE PLAN. Even some of his crappier movies are fun, like CRIMEWAVE, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, and those first two Spider-man movies you guys keep on the shelf next to your Bibles. But then you don't like the hair do he puts on Spider-man during one silly scene in one out of three of the Spider-man movies and you want to fuckin carve pictures of Magic: the Gathering characters into his flesh.

Same thing with George Miller. Total genius. Directed the fuckin ROAD WARRIOR. Follows his own path. Blazes his own trail. You want to rape him and leave him in a ditch because of what you IMAGINE he will do to a movie he HASN'T EVEN STARTED FILMING YET.

And Brian Singer. Not even close to their same league, but not a bad director. Half you guys probaly love USUAL SUSPECTS. APT PUPIL was underrated. You worship his two X-Men pictures. Then he does an only okay Superman and you plan to commit hate crimes against him.

Here's an idea: FUCK OFF. It sucks when a director you like fucks up, or when a children's comic strip character that you enjoy dressing up as does an evil jazz dance in one part. But you know what? Life goes on. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Their track records are more powerful than your nitpicks. It's more important to the world that the guy is returning to horror than that you disagree with his interpretation of the alien spider monster.

Is this a nerd thing or is it a generation gap? Do the young people just not respect directors like Miller and Raimi? If so, which directors do you respect?

A note to Robert Tapert though: don't forget Raimi's own rule: "you must taste blood to be a man." And you know, a good way to abbreviate "excessive violence" is "excellence."

Yes, yes, yes...but if you really love horror, if you really care about that genre, nothing should matter besides the fact that a horror maestro is returning to his craft. (and besides that, how can this not star Bruce Campbell!?) Now all I have to wait for on my dream horror check list is Peter Jackson Presents (/directs/stars in): Bad Taste 2

I'll always love Raimi for Evil Dead 2 and Darkman (Hell, I even like The Gift), but the combined effect of the lame horror films he's produced lately, Spidey 3 and the word "spook-a-blast" is making it hard for me to feel too optimistic.

Seriously, Vern's right. A director does one bad / lukewarm movie or covers a subject you're not interested in and it's time to get the hate on?? Regardless of his misfires, Raimi is still one of the more exciting directors working today. Give the man his due props for all he's accomplished to date. Two or three flicks for now, if he hasn't hit a longball, then it's time to talk. But right now, Raimi is still the tits in my book.

The 3rd, while easily being the worst of the three, is actually my favorite because it's the only one where the super hero story isn't superfluous. I don't need a comedy, don't need a coming-of-age spider-man flick or a romantic comedy spider-man flick, just gimmie the friggen SPIDER-MAN spider-man flick. That finally happened in the third. The shitty, shitty third. That said, I love Raimi. It's amazing what the guy can do with a camera and a physical comedy actor.

I don't mind gore-less horror one bit.... though if that's the case it might be more accurate to call the film a thriller instead of horror. But movies like Seven, Silence of the Lambs or even (some) J-Horror are great movies that border on the horror genre with minimal gore. We just want great movies, regardless of the gore content.

You are kind of missing the point of talkback a bit aren't you? I'm sure a good percentage of the 'haters' on this site just do it to get a rise out of people...for some people that is the 'fun' of the internet. Just like some people think it is 'fun' to read the shit. Besides the fact that Raimi isn't Kurosawa, Scorsese, or even Cronenberg. People bitch because, get this, they CARE about these characters, some of them pushing 70 years old. Spider-Man, X-Men, and MOST egregiously, Superman, could have been SO MUCH MORE than the cookie-cutter by-the-numbers stuff we ended up with.

When you think about it, outside of the torrents of blood and goo/ catch an eyeball by the mouth/various dismemberments, there's not a lot of gore in Evil Dead 2 as there is in unrated horror today. Think of the Demon-cam and strap-Ash-to-the-front-of a-car-and-spin-him-around-Cam, and I can see what Tapert's talking about.

if they never would've forced him to put venom in it we wouldn't have gotten that crap his unclear vision of how a film version of the venom storyline should be...why once again. 'cause he wasn't the man for the job. All he knew was the imagery of venom but not the character himself. Why do you think he loved all the older classic villains? He was never a fan of the newer ones therefore he just wasn't the man for the job. A sandman only movie with a lizard subplot, in hindsight would've been alot better...Huge venom fan right here. Yes I understand that evil Peter Parker's own logic told him his twisted sense of whats cool, but bring that on the screen completely missed the point the Symbiote....Subtlety...there was a lot less of it in this movie than in the others...

THE EVIL DEAD was pretty fuckin relentless. I think there is some dark humor in there, but it's under the surface. EVIL DEAD 2 for my money is one of the best balances of humor and horror. It's funny, but not at expense of the horror. AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON might be the only one that does it better.

Okay, once you get into ARMY OF DARKNESS then you throw all seriousness out of the window, I'll give you that. But this one doesn't sound like ARMY OF DARKNESS.

Also, Birdy, you lost me with the Altman reference.

somebody said it earlier, but i completely agree. The dance scene while sucky was the least nagging bug in the whole movie.....The rushing of character storylines. The forcing it down our throats really irritated me...Spiderman 3 completely dropped everything that made the other two especially the last one amazing. It did this to the point that i was wondering if it was the same people were filming this one who did the previous ones..3 was sooo drastically different. I mean it almost even felt that these people didn't care, as if it was done with spite....Think of it this way. School report due the next day, you're going to fail, so you decide to just wing the whole thing and do it with a lack of responsibility with no care for the consequences.

I've enjoyed every movie Raimi has made, for good or worse. While I don't usually post negatively, I have to say how sickened I am that ppl so easily pass Raimi off as finished because of SM3. If you don't already know, Raimi swore he wouldn't do Venom, before he even started shooting SM1. Sam had a full shooting script for SM3 that dealt with the Sandman and Vulture (that could have, conceivably, had Venom set up for SM4). Avi Arad (and many others from Marvel) put a lot of pressure on Raimi to include Venom as the principle bad guy pretty much at the last minute. Being under contract, there wasn't much he could say about it

I'm sure Raimi was disappointed, to say the least, that his creative vision had been diluted, so I can understand why his interest waned towards Vemon's inclusion, though most of the movie (that doesn't include Venom), I found, was very well done. Was it his fault? You can disagree all you want, but those who know the truth would say, resoundingly, "NO!"

I sincerely hope that, "Drag Me to Hell" turns out to be the slap in the face that the haters need. Raimi isn't my favorite director, but he's unique, and can be a lot of fun. Though I don't think (or would prefer) that he'll be directing, "The Hobbit", I think he would have made an interesting film.

I thought it was pretty solid. The movie looked gorgeous, with the bleak empty cold setting reflecting the inner conflicts of the protagonists. Also, you can't go wrong with Billy Bob Thornton and Bill Paxton. Well, maybe you can, but they're usually pretty awesome. I've always liked nice guy Bill Paxton more than dickhead Bill Paxton. Even though he did some very not nice things in A Simple Plan, I still consider that a Nice Guy Bill Paxton role. But I think he's really good at getting people to care about his character. He was the only thing that made Twister even remotely watchable. Anyway, I liked A Simple Plan a lot.

I can't even believe the same person directed Spidey 2, which was almost the perfect superhero movie (second only to Superman The Movie). Without a doubt the script was shit, but couldn't Sam have demanded a rewrite? The editing was horrendous. A more competent editor (like Stuart Baird) might have been able to save that movie. He would have screamed at Raimi, walked out of the editing room, and take a stand (like he did with Donner on Superman). Crying Sandman, dancing and singing, crying Brock ... oh what a fucking mess.

I intend to relish it when people act stunned that a talented man whose best years were almost thirty years ago MIGHT POSSIBLY have delivered a subpar film. You see, Vern, you forgot the other cardinal rule of geeks like you and me: We'll clutch a director's early works, sometimes a single work, to our chest like talismans, and we'll pretend they're all that matters, even if perhaps they're not what they once were and the facts of today's reality and the film they've made TODAY are slapping us in the face with a titanium dildo. Hence, the fanboy worship for Singer(whose X-films were NOT that great but people were just glad it wasn't feces smeared on the screen that they valorize him now), and Sam Raimi (who is a great filmmaker and did mostly well with the Spider-Man films but let's face it, The Gift sucked), and now of course George Miller and the absolutely dreadful facts of that film thus far. Sorry, Vern, but when that turd comes out I think all we'll get from you is a lot of mealymouthed, lukewarm fidgeting and talk about George Miller's "larger oeuvre". "Is it a generation gap?" No. It's FANBOY MYOPIA.

We LOVE Spider-Man, and after years anticipating a great sequel, what possibly could have been the last and finest movie in Raimi's trilogy, it's just tragically disheartening to be confronted with what was delivered. You can't blame people for calling Raimi out on this blunder. If we don't voice our objections loud and proud, then he would never learn from his mistakes and correct them for the future. Hopefully he sees (as Jackson hopefully saw with Kong) that too much self-indulgence and too many storylines spoil a movie.
Respect for Oldies

I grew up with Raimi and Evil Dead, I was the kid on the block who said, "You gotta check this film out, it's brilliant" when Dead 2 hit. But, I am the last person excited to hear Raimi's going back to horror and it has fuck all to do with whether I "respect" Raimi or not. He's a talented filmmaker (I actually really like Spidey 2 for what it's worth - quite a bit too) but the excitement, the energy and the thought that this might be not just "another horror movie" is pretty much well-past gone. To be honest, I love Evil Dead 2 but I'm happy Raimi hit the big leagues because once he hit Army of Darkness it felt like watching a guy who had been there done that (kind of like if Tarantino had kept on making Reservoir Dogs over and over without ever developing beyond that point). I don't want to see Raimi "repeat" himself and I think his time with Spidey has enabled him to develop beyond the "horror legend who created Evil Dead". Where does that put people like Cronenberg and Scorcese (because they've mined a single vein for many years) - it's puts them on a whole nother level in my book. They're better filmmakers all round - they constantly found new challenges within their subject matters, pushed envelopes etc. I loved Brisko County Jr but - c'mon, it was hardly fucking envelope pushing, it didn't slap me in the face like Crash or even Bringing out the Dead did. Raimi isn't as talented as many other genre filmmakers (Coen Brothers for instance - if you want to call 'em genre, which I am for the moment) so to hear he's going back to the same old same old to make a "spook a blast" is a bit sad really. Not a lack of respect just a sadness that Raimi's momentum might be slowing somewhat (I still think another Campbell Dead would be great though - Raimi needn't direct, give it to a talented youngster). Really, what geek wasn't proud when Raimi hit the big leagues with Spidey in the first place? Noone deserved success more (after walling in cattle shit while making Evil Dead and dealing with drunken hillbilly folk) I want to see him do bigger, better - not go backward. As for George Miller - this man has "carved his own path" by what? Denying everything in him that was talented, brilliant, challenging, exciting and ground breaking (Road Warrior) and turning around to make kids films and middling drama's (Lorenzo's Finely Crafted & Exceptionally Boring but Well Acted Turd). This man shames himself and his own best films. His career is a mockery of talent. Here's a guy who really could've been the next Kurosawa and now what? He's making Pixar ripoff's and films about talking pigs? Shit! The Justice film sounds like a terrible idea to begin with (I wasn't an Xmen fan by the way) and giving it to this guy is a slap in the face to audiences (audiences, not "fans" - audiences will have to sit through this drivel "fans" who know better will simply stay home) everywhere. Why not an Aranofsky Justice League or a Liman League. Can you imagine the excitement if the following announcement was made, "David Finchers Justice League of America" Now THERE'S a film I'd back, get behind and be proud to slap my hard earned money down onto the counter to see.

I don't deny the truth of what you're saying, it is accurate in many cases. I'm not sure how it applies here though. Personally, I do think Raimi's glory years may be behind him, but 5 or 6 guys in this talkback have said SPIDER-MAN 2 was the best comic book movie ever made. That was two movies ago and they've already sworn a blood oath against his family. That seems like a short attention span is all.

And George Miller too. If Justice League sucks I will be the first to admit it. But I think you nerds (or whatever the respectful term for you nerds is) are wrong on this one. If you watch that penguin movie, and ignore the fact that it's a musical about penguins, you will see that it pretty much shows everything he needs for Justice League. 1. a knack for thrilling action sequences 2. mastery of digital effects 3. making fantastical worlds out of nothing 4. somehow making a watchable movie out of a stupid idea that you'd think only children would watch 5. etc. Yeah, ROAD WARRIOR was a generation ago, but he clearly still has the chops and has evolved with the technology.

Plus, even if JUSTICE LEAGUE sucks, it will make money and allow him to make FURY ROAD, which is more important.

The other thing is, the "absolutely dreadful facts" that you refer to are unsubstantiated rumors about who is cast in the movie. And let's say they are all correct – we don't even know who these people are, how do we know if it's bad casting or not?

I hope it's a good movie, I'm sure you do too. If it is, I only ask that you send a nice card to George Miller with an apology written inside, preferably in calligraphy. Make sure it goes to George Miller MD of Australia and not that other George Miller who did ZEUS AND ROXANNE. And if the movie sucks then I will send him a "sorry about the nerds firebombing your house" card. Deal?

I'm not clear on your point. You're saying they're not good directors unless they stop making movies we're interested in? It doesn't sound like you follow Del Toro, but his first movie (Cronos) was "serious" and so was The Devil's Backbone. In fact, he considers those and Pan's Labyrinth a loose trilogy. So of course Pan's Labyrinth is "the movie he was always capable of," because it's the type of movie he's been doing since the beginning. The one that was a surprise was Blade II. I had high hopes but it surpassed them.

It sounds like you're saying that Del Toro is limited in his talents if he doesn't stop making imaginative movies and make some drama about lawyers with cancer. Well I say fuck that. That would in fact be a limitation of his talents, a waste of his talents.

Just because you don't respect genre movies doesn't mean other people can't. To me and many others it is more impressive and respectable for Raimi to try to make another great horror movie than to do another drama about baseball. Or for Wes Craven to do another Meryl Streep movie. That's why this news is exciting.

Kilik, I will also never understand the Spiderman 3 hate.

I can understand that there are things that people don't like about Spider-Man 3, because there were things that I didn't like, but I thought the good outweighed the bad. I liked Spider-Man 3 more than Batman Begins, and I really enjoyed Batman Begins. In my opinion, Batman Begins has more flaws than Spider-Man 3, and one of the most glaring flaws is that Batman Begins took itself far too seriously, which I suppose was Nolan's entire point, but it felt less like Batman and more like some pretentious Sherlock Holmes ninja bullshit. Yeah, I know, Batman is a detective, but did we really need an in-depth origin story? I mean... he's fucking BATMAN. If people didn't know why Bruce Wayne turned to caped crime-fighting by the time Batman Begins came out (2005) then the comic book demographic experienced a catastrophic cultural misstep somewhere along the line. All bullshittery aside though, I know that Spider-Man 3 was fucking silly in a lot of parts, but just as a fan of the comics, being able to see Venom and Spidey fighting in midair at the end of the movie was an enjoyable experience.

IMO, the many coincidences that cause the story to move forward, i.e. comet hits ground w/symbiote twenty yards away from Peter and M.J and Flint just falling into some random pit that gives him super-powers. Then again it is a comic book movie, so it is something that is expected a bit.
The other main thing was the lack of character development in Venom, alot of people wanted him to be the main villian since the first movie came out, instead (by coincidence) Parker decides he doesn't want it anymore, just when Brock is praying in the same church and thus we get Venom (although I don't remember anyone referring to him by that name). The ending was what I disliked most, it wasn't a battle royale, it was a quick wrap up with Tricia Takanawa as a narrator and a bunch of grown men with super powers having PMS (along with crying). And who the fuck was Bernard? Was he the Green Goblin's gay butt buddy, he said he loved him...

Other than that it was an okay movie, the dancing didn't bother me really, I understood it was a joke and Parker was just being full of himself that is why the chicks weren't digging his emo strut.

Right on brotha. Anywho, anyone notice on Dark Horizons report of Raimi making this movie that it says he's directing The Hobbit afterwards? I thought that was odd.

Is Raimi's "Xena/Hercules" producer as well. Bruce Campbell's in "Jack of All Trades" too. I think all of those TV series had an "Army of Darkness" vibe.
