Aside from Jackie Chan, Chow is probably the biggest Asian actor around. If they had that kind of money to spend, why not get Beat Takeshi? He would have been a perfect Master Roshi. This is really a comedian's role. That said, I'm excited to see a name like Chow Yun Fat as part of this movie. It gives it a huge burst of legitimacy. We all know it's impossible for this movie not to be a turd, especially with the "Goku at school" set pics the other day on http://www.dragonballmovieblog .com/, but it's getting more interesting.

I was never really a fan of the show, I found that at times the show was way too convoluted in that if you miss a few episodes you'd end up completely lost and at other times it seemed like episode after episode would go by and nothing really would happen. A fight breaks out and it takes three or more episodes before a character is ready to unleash some kind of ridiculously powerful attack. All criticisms aside, I do respect the fact that the comics and animated series has a large following and that a live-action adaptation has been something fans have wanted for years. As I see the cast list grow, my curiosity is piqued more and more. From what I do know of DB and DBZ, if they can actually pull off a faithful live-action rendition that really captures the look and feel of the series, the movie could end up being a lot of fun. I am just concerned that the story may need to be strong as not to alienate those who know even less about Dragonball than I do, but not be so mainstream that it disappoints the die-hard fans. Then again, isn't that pretty much the main goal of any film that is based on an already-known and well-liked source? I am always wary of a movie that is based on a book, TV series, play, comic, or otherwise previously existing work. Studios almost always seem to screw it up somehow. I just hope the movie delivers the goods and makes everyone happy.
See kids, this is how you make a point without being an asshole. We all like different things, but that doesn't give you the right to shit on everything you don't like. Get a life haters.

Okay people; Dragonball does NOT take place in Asia. Anyone who has paid attentio to the show for more then 2 seconds should realize this. It takes place on an entirely reimagined Earth. Also why should Goku appear asian? First of all, as I established above, the show does not take place in Asia. Second the characters are not drawn to look asian. Third; Goku is an ALIEN soh why would he need to look asian even if the show did take place in asia?

He also trains the alien boy in the ways of martial arts and teaches him to wield powerful energy techniques such as the Kamehameha. While he is growing up, Goku befriends Bulma and ChiChi (a side note here: the director/screen writers could potentially implement ChiChi as Roshi's daughter/granddaughter and totally abolish the Ox King character altogether) and goes on crazy adventures with them and, to the dismay of many a DB fan, attends highschool. My guess is that Vegeta will take form as a rival highschool student, probably a bully archtype, and hilarity will ensue. Krillin will be a scrawny kid with cancer who gets bullied by Vegeta. And there will also be a love quadrilateral between Goku, Bulma, ChiChi, and Vegeta. Expect hardcore DB fans to throw their popcorn and drinks at the screen and walk out of the theatre in a rank huff.

... I'll tell you why. Superman's motto is "Truth, Justice and the American Way." Goku's motto is NOT "Truth, Justice and the Japanese Way." Superman also wore the American colors on his uniform. Goku's color, orange, is NOT the color of the Japanese flag. Furthermore, the manga/anime do NOT take place in Japan. As Jokerisdaking said earlier, it is a totally reimagined Earth, not the Earth that we live in. Granted, Superman's Earth is somewhat reimagined as well, but not nearly to the extent that DB's world is. And one more thing... Goku doesn't even LOOK Japanese. Superman looks like a white dude. But Goku was not modeled to look Japanese. In fact, most anime characters are modeled to look like white American people.

Superman's motto was put into place at a time when "American" was synonymous with "Liberty". The newest Superman film bypasses "American" when referring to what Superman stands for (a move I disagree with, but that's another issue). Superman wears PRIMARY colors on his uniform, last I checked yellow was nowhere on the American flag nor was white anywhere on Superman's costume. The Filipino flag is red, white blue and yellow, should Kryptonians be depicted as Southeast Asians? Fair enough on the extent of how Goku's universe differs more from reality then DC's. The bottom line does come down to looks. In art, when given not too many specific cues, we relate to characters as ourselves. Why does Goku not look Japanese? Because all of Toriyama's characters have big eyes? In that art style Goku looks pretty Japanese to me. Look at Mr. Satan's eyes, build and body hair compared to Goku's. He's pretty much a caricature of a Westerner. Superman usually looks like a white guy, granted, but Dean Cain is part Asian and Jim Lee draws all his characters with small, narrow eyes, does that mean when Jim Lee draws, everyone's Asian? But hey, if you find an interview somewhere where Toriyama states that Goku was modeled to look European American, I'll concede. The character's original name is Son Goku, he's loosely based on a character from Chinese literature but created by Japanese. His original words were written by Japanese, he speaks Japanese, he wears Japanese clothes, he does Japanese martial arts. His whole fantasy world is culturally Japanese. There's no reason he should be white. Go Mifune (Speed Racer) is a slightly different issue since they did manage to change his name and show was fairly culturally ambiguous to begin with.

I'm not saying it will be good, but it's too soon to pass judgment just yet, esp since the two Chows are involved. And yes, there are non-Asian characters in anime/manga but the "giant eyes and hair color" are not a way to determine their nationality. You can really only tell by the font they use or the way they talk in the though speech bubbles, or because we are told they are foreign.

I was referring to older anime from the 80's if you caught the 80's referenced anime's I pointed out near the bottom of my post. Those characters were represented with Green, Blue, and sometimes pink eyes. I dont know if you've been to Japan but not many asians have much variance in eye color they are usually dark. Granted I have met a japanese person (while in japan) that had green eyes. It is quite rare though. won't save this project from its fate.

Let me sum it up: a mediocre director, a skinny action lead, a bogus "coproducer", an impossigle shooting schedule (production starts in december for an august '08 release? Are you kidding me???) and now Chow Yun Fat cast in order to please the few fans gullible enough to think it will make a change.

Someone, somewhere, somehow... gotta fire Tom Rothman. I mean it. Fox is by far the worst studio around, greenlighting shitty projects at the speed of light, like the 90's Warner Bros. In that case, looks more like a very expensive Cannon film though.

So you're saying just because they have rounded eyes they're suppose to be white. ANIME is a style that was rooted in ASian artisitic lines. Large eyes are suppose to represent an innocent character not a fucking racial characteristic. SO if Goku is an alien he has to be white? ALL aliens are white? AND your arguments that Superman is ok because he looks white and has an american flag for his outfit makes and Goku's outfit is not part of the Japanese flag is so fucking stupid. Last time I checked there's no yellow in the american flag and no White in Superman's outfit. Goku didn't look racially different than his asian friends in DRAGONBALL Z except the tail so he's not suppose to be white. I wasnt saying Goku should be portrayed as white or asian. The topic of this discussion is that Master Roshi is played by Chow Yun Fat. However, considering that Goku is an alien it could go either way. The director / producers decided to go with white. But, think of it this way, why didnt Japan make a big-budget Dragonball movie? and if there is any creative involvement from the Original Creator(s) why would they think it was okay for Goku to be played by a white actor? There are very talented asian actors who could tackle the role. Makes ya think right? I'm not trying to start an argument just throwing that idea out there.

It doesn't matter to him that three Asians have already been cast and two who have the final say are making the movie. His argument is as weak as it is immature. He is only concerned about stereotypes and what people dress and look like. According to this logic, Piccolo should be played by an Indian because his clothes are middle eastern. Damn YOU RACISTS for casting a "white boy"! He thinks big eyes means "innocent" in anime. Uggh what a nauseatingly, childish sentiment. No wonder people who like anime have such a bad name. Two Chinese superstars attached to a film based on a Japanese anime/manga that is bastardized from a famous Chinese story and turned into a live-action film. Xing Xi already played Wukong twice. Why this garbage, really? Yun Fat could do much better as well.

Now you've got Dragonball fans here bitching, moaning and defending that putrid turd of a show. This stupid series does not deserve any kind of accolades. Dragonball fans are worse than StarWars or LOTR fans.unlike SW and Lotr there are no redeeming qualities to the Dragonball series. It was dumb, loud, repetitious and really annoying.Unless you're a ritalin induced 15 year old retard,no one should be defending Dragonball.

I never used the word "racists". So you're calling me immature cause there are 2 asians cast and another asian that gets final say. So there has to be a quota of 3 asians on a film about an asian pop story? Big eyes meaning innocence is a direct quote from several sources about anime, most recently a documentary airing on Starz currently, also I know alot of people making a stink about this. Alot of asians I know are plenty pissed, me being one of them, and yes I do know Disney was an influence on anime but so was asian art and american cinema. Disney used huge eyes on Bambi to create innocence in the character. So i am quite mature enough to know.

I haven't seen that movie. I will try and check it out though. It was my understanding that Japan's film industry doesn't create the revenue to support making such big budgeted features.

Varakor, saw the pix of his chick! ha, man i frealing LOVE sugar babies, makes me want to get rich. i also love how she is like a foot taller than the guy. kucinich is good, at least he tried to stand up to the tyranny this year. but man, im still sticking with RON PAUL, because i am sick of paying income tax! i will have thousands of dollars extra in 2009, if RON PAUL wins the election. i need the cash big time, i want to buy a studio! ha. but kucinich did hook up, and he is showing her off! too bad the establishment is ALSO against kucinich, GORE VIDAL just wrote a piece how they snubbed him in some iowa debate. i freaking hate the military industrial complex, why can't they let someone with a voice actually SPEAK? the greatest thing ever, for the american people would be kucinich vs. RON PAUL. this way, you get to see the red haired vixin on stage with dennis, and then, we all win, when RON PAUL eliminates income tax. that is why, in 2008, im going to VOTE FOR RON PAUL!

I apologize if anyone already mentioned it but I don't want to read all the posts and don't want to... Fine! Lazy bums here's the tinyurl http://tinyurl.com/2gvmhl. Copy and paste

Anyway, I came across this movie in a Mexican channel a few months ago. I looked it up in youtube and I found lots of scenes. As you can imagine, it looks like a b-movie with c-movie special effects. Well, look it up or use the tinyurl provided.

Been doing some thinking about this flick...

...and here are a few things they can do to minimize the suckiness of it:

1. Set it on real Earth, modern day. Trying to capture the talking animals and clear fantasy setting of the comic and cartoon is far beyond the capabilities of the team behind this and just increases the risk of it being cheesy as hell. Make it modern day, in New York, or something.

2. Roll Gohan (Goku's grandfather) and Muten Roshi into one character. Say that Roshi found him when his capsule crashed in China back 20 years ago, or something, and brought Goku with him when he emigrated to the United States. Now, Roshi runs a small martial arts school in Chinatown, with Goku his top student.

3. Needs kick ass special effects. I guess Piccolo will be the villain, but I want to see tanks and jets scrambled against this guy, only to get completely decimated. Throw some tanks around Times Square, destroying buildings and pretty much leveling the city.

4. Respect the feel of the source material more than the material itself. This is kind of what I'm getting at with my previous points. Dragonball was a pretty funny comic with some neat fight scenes, so if the movie can capture that, then that'll go a long way towards making it actually watchable.
Only Stephen Chow can pull this off

DRAGONBALL Z is, like POKEMON, one of those, soul-less, cynical worthless pieces of 1000-episode shit that give anime a bad name. CJ7 looks like watery ass. Chow Sing Chi should NOT choose this garbage as his Hollywood debut. I have spoken. Suck on it!

Well, i like to see that guy, but is he really going to fit this role? I've seen the old Dragonball Movie, and that Roshi was near perfection. Chow would have a very hard time to reach that level of Roshi-ness. I really hope Chow could act him that good too, or maybe a little better. @MaxTheSilent: well, not even Pokemon reached 100Eps yet, same goes for the Dragonball-Universe. The only soulless shit here is you. Not every anime is the way you like it(if you ever liked one). And if you have Animes you like, you should come up with it, or just shut up for every Anime-Based comment if you don't. @AICN: Sorry for my hard words, but that guy just makes DB/DBZ/DBGT-Fans angry.

But when Dragonball Z was first shown in the UK (where I currently operate), I was a hyperactive, power-hungry, violence-loving teenager (13) and obsolutely loved that show. To this day, though I now see just how dumb it was, I still have some affection for the characters and universe. Sure the movie is going to actually be a turd on a giant screen, but I'm still checking it out. It'll be like watching those early American Idol/X-Factor auditions where some eegit sings a song you know and love, completely fucking butchers it, but you love it anyway cuz watching things crash and burn is fun. Same applies here. This will be a disaster of Street Fighter the movie Proportions, but admit it folks. When you're channel flicking and you spot aul Van Damme beating up Gomez, you go back and watch it in all it's glory and in complete awe and admiration for the train-wreck that it is. DON'T U!? Damn right you do. Rock on DragonBall!

now this might all freak you guys out...WHAT IF..the goku was stunt casting and they actually casted justin chatwin as gohan....which in turn leave the goku spot open. This would make sense with justin being the son for goku and bulma(emma rossum: who is caucasian) to be a mix....this would kind ignore all the age differences in the movie though...but if they did go through with this all of you would be on board to see this movie.

isn't it funny that all of you still came back for the next episode to watch...WHY you ask, because the fights were that damn good. C'mon guys this can be a man's movie...IF it's done right it's a "i'm stronger than you are, oh you disagree with me then let's have a BADASS fight movie...That is if it's done right and excludes hour long powerups....you know what other genre is like that, ummm westerns...You people can't tell me it won't be awesome when you see one of these villains trying to fight goku missing every tooth possible and three limbs and still is screaming out his chances of killing him while doing some extreme energy blast thingy... I just hope this final destination director doesn't suck. This can be good

but a big part of me wants to feel that wonder of being in a fantastical and whimsical imagined world...I would love to see a dinosaur on screen while goku is out in the wilderness on his own training or something like that....I do see your point and your version would kick ass.. My truer to the show version would be very difficult to pull off as your would be the more realistic and feasible approach.....don't forget the aliens, time travel and fighting tournaments... ;)

Simple plot, lots of fighting, lots of yelling, lots of musclemen being badasses! You fuckers flocked to that and praised it to high heaven! So what's the difference here? Huh? What is it? Female nuidty? Uncensored DBZ had some of that too didn't it? So I don't see what the problem is with teh criticism of the show from a site full of hypocrites who flocked to 300! And damnit I also liked 300! And for all the same reasons I lvoed DBZ! Which was to see some guys yell and fight for half an hour! That was some entertaining shit, more entertaining that American Idol or whatever it is you people watch... DBZ was a children's show for all intents and purposes, except it didn't have censors and concerned American watchdogs demand that it adhere to some educational children's formula, it was entertainment and spectacle form start to finish, that's it! It never pretended to be anything other than that! And I for one had a rocking good time! Even if this movie is the more light hearted and fun DB rather than the action packed testorone of DBZ.
