Tobacco Co. Conspiracy?
by Bruno Diaz
Dec 18th, 2007
12:28:08 AM
I am very curious as to whether or not Phillip Morris tobacco company secretly conspired to have Hollywood put out a movie called "I Love You, Phillip Morris". Even if the story has nothing to do with tobacco just that phrase being associated with a popular Jim Carrey movie could do powerful things for the company's image; if only just on some kind of neuro-linguistic level. I imagine meetings leading up to this being like Aaron Eckhart's dealings with Rob Lowe in "Thank You For Smoking". Of course I could be full of shit. Just thinking.

Does J.J. Abrams pay people to come on this site and promote his movie in talkbacks that relate in no way for extra publicity? For fuck's sake people, maybe it'll be good, but it's not going to alter your life forever. And at this point, since no one knows what kind of quality we're looking at, maybe you want to temper you're excitement a little. Abrams hasn't been directly involved in anything spectacular except Lost, of which he has very input. Oh right, the movie talkback. Sounds like a funny premise, hope they pull it off. Carrey needs something good on his resume in the last ten years.

Carrey's Prison Break

Prison Break made breaking out of prison cool. I don't know if breaking out of prison just to bone Ewan McGregor will keep it's cool. Carrey keeps trying to make serious movies but usually fails. Carrey once said that the public only wants to see him with his hand up his ass. Now it looks like we'll see Ewan McGregor's hand up Carrey's ass.

Crap like I LOVE YOU, PHILLIP MORRIS gets greenlit, and good stories get passed up. As for the acidic commentary on Jim Carrey's career ... y'all couldn't be MORE RIGHT! This guy keeps proving he jumped the shark with that crap-fest THE MAJESTIC. And don't get me started on Darabont (director of aforementioned waste of celluloid). Every parent I know (even the ones who HATE THEIR KIDS) are lining up to bitch-slap that idiot over the ending to THE MIST. Why do movies keep sucking nowadays??!!!

The Cable Guy and Life. Life was okay, but the last "dark comedy" Carrey did was the Cable Guy. I've only seen a few bits of it here and there to know I don't want to watch the whole thing. Nothing wrong with that, no star can knock a home run every time. I still need to see Eternal Sunshine.... I was really impressed with Carrey's dramatic skills in The Truman Show. Too bad the idiot department marketed the movie as a comedy.

Jim Carrey really needs to return to the brand of comedy he was most successful at for a time. Not that he should go all the way back to Pet Detective. He's definitely outgrown that stuff. Or even the Mask. But Liar Liar, The Cable Guy, Bruce Almighty and even Dick and Jane. These were grown-up comedies with a purpose and wide appeal. The trip to the "dark side" of Carrey hasn't worked out evenly. After hitting a couple out of the park in the acting department with Truman and Moon, Eternal Sunshine ammounted to not much more than an interesting experiment, while 23 was just weak. Thankfully, a look at his upcoming slate offers hope: Yes Man could be great if handled right (think Liar) and Ripley's could be brilliant in a fucked-up freaky way. Christmas Carrol? Zemeckis is attached, so I have hope for a different take on that one. Carrey will be a fun Scrooge. That's all.

Who cares about Jessica Alba or Biel not taking their clothes off? If I want to see something raw I can Limewire or Isohunt it all day long. Nudity usually doesn't push a story along, it's just to pull a few more people to the theater. Actresses usually don't want to do it anyway, but some cave for the money. Halle Berry was paid an extra 500k for her sunbathing shot in Swordfish. Real movies don't need nudity to draw people to the theaters.
And I thought I'd seen everything...

When I saw that movie Shadowboxer, I thought the pairing of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Mo'Nique was the oddest romantic coupling ever to be committed to celluloid. Apparently I was wrong. Color me intrigued though....plot sounds interesting and different, and Carrey/McGregor kick all kinds of ass. (Insert clever homoerotic pun using word "ass" here)

"Carrey keeps trying to make serious movies but usually fails" ?? Yes, because Man on the Moon, The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind were such artistic and financial failures. Carrey = genius.

After Brokeback was nominated for Oscars everybody wanted to ride the anti-bigotry wave. There are movies in various stages of production that are centered on the injustices towards those attracted to the same gender. If you are trying to present same gender attraction as a serious subject you probably shouldn't use "homoerotic" puns like Carrey/McGregor kicking ass.

I don't dispute at all that Jim Carrey is an extremely talented actor. I don't think that his serious movies have failed due to a lack of acting ability. Perhaps his choice of screenplays or, more likely, directing should account for his failure. Also, sometimes it's hard to detach Jim Carrey's face from Ace Venture. It's hard look at him and not think of Ace Ventura or his various Living Color roles, like Firemarshall Bill. Carrey is very talented.

Eat shit and die. That movie is fucking great. It's an absolute classic. You're seriously a retard if you don't think it's funny. It's not typical studio garbage that tells you when to laugh. I look down on anyone who doesn't like that movie on some level. Seriously, you're just dumb. Willie: You know, I think I've turned a corner. Marcus: Yeah? You fucking petites now? Willie: No, I'm not talking about that. I beat the shit out of some kids today. But it was for a purpose. It made me feel good about myself. It was like I did something constructive with my life or something, I dunno, like I accomplished something. Marcus: You need many years of therapy. Many, many fuckin' years of therapy.

Fucking LMAO at your threads. So true. Whatever happened to fun, meaningless T&A flicks? That genre has just died. Too bad, because they filled the niche right between comedy and outright campy porn. Truth is you're partly right...people are afraid to go to anything like that anymore lest they be labelled mysoginistic or, worse, a perv. But the other half of it is the economics of film these days. Remember, it costs so much to make and produce a feature that you can't appeal simply to one segment of the audience. That is, unless you want to go straight to video.

The only one of his "serious" pictures I can stand to watch is ETERNAL SUNSHINE, where he managed to iron out most of his annoying rubberface mannerisms. As for the rest, he's always just going to be "Jim Carrey mimicking a serious performance".

ETERNAL SUNSHINE is a great movie, but it's great in spite of Jim Carrey, not because of him. I liked that movie a lot, but I'm not about to commend Carrey for (finally) behaving like a normal person in a serious role. He should be able to do that every fucking time. He's really got to start bringing more to the table for that to happen, though, and I don't see that happening. And, he seems to think people should be handing him awards for these zero-range 'performances' he turns in. The sad fact is, he's no Robert De Niro, no Al Pacino, no Jeff Bridges, no Denzel Washington, no Russell Crowe, no Sean Penn...he's not even a Robin Williams. He probably couldn't even sell a dumb action thriller like SPEED if he had to. And as much as he likes to compare himself to Jimmy Stewart, he can never be him, because he doesn't have an ounce of Stewart's *class*.
