Most of you probably haven't read or heard of Tintin because it was an intelligent kids' comic when you dorks were struggling to understand your Caspar or Richie Rich comics. Spielberg has said many times that Indiana Jones was inspired by the Tintin adventures. Plenty of movies come out every year based on or inspired by literary or graphic content from many sources, so to say "who knows who Tintin is or who cares about a Tintin movie" just makes you sound retarded.

So I did a wiki on it and learned. The cartoon art looked familiar, but I can't say I read it, watched it, or otherwise associated with it at all during my childhood. No one else I know did, either, and certainly neither my kids nor their friends have a clue. Which isn't to say the film couldn't be successful. But it IS to say they better not hope to market the project by striking a chord of nostalgia in Americans, cuz they won't be getting it. I wouldn't worry too much about this being an odd choice for a big budget film. The fact is that Tin-Tin is one of the most popular and widely read comic strip characters in the world, far more so than a lot of the American comic book characters. Here in the UK for example almost everyone would at least have a rough idea who Tin-Tin is. A lot of people read the books as kids and often also read the French language versions in French class in school. Certainly out of my "normal", "non-nerd" friends I could find a lot more people who've read a Tin-Tin book than even, say, a Superman comic (most people here's knowledge of Superman is entirely TV and film based). Furthermore, Tin-Tin is far more popular in the rest of Europe than it is here in the UK. The thing is printed in over 50 languages around the world. That's a lot of people. Then add in the casual movie-goers who are attracted to anything with Speilberg and/or Peter Jacksons' names on it (which I'm sure would account for a lot of the American public, even if they've not heard of Tin-Tin as some of you imply) and you're talking about an enormous audience.

My quarrel is not with people who don't know who Tintin is, but with those who would seek to make that ignorance a virtue. I seethe at the notion that pop-cultural films can only be made from properties popular in America. The fact is that Tintin will by virtue of its name alone make huge amounts of cash outside of the United States. If it's less popular in America than in the rest of the world it won't really matter in the long run. I suspect this is what pisses people off. Basically I doubt very much they are going to throw millions at it unless they A) are not concerned about the US market as the know that the film will make a lot of money elsewhere, or B) their research shows that enough people in the US have heard of Tin-Tin. Aren't (or at least shouldn't be) predicting box office failure these tin tin movies based on a lack of US-familiarity with the comic books. It's more of an interesting marketing question, or a questioning a bold move by Spielberg and Jackson. There's a reason that big, expensive movies are by and large based on well-known material or established franchises these days--$200 million is a lot to wager on a new concept, especially in an extremely competitive entertainment market. That said, I think that those who are discounting the US market are overstating things a bit. While it's true that the international market for movies is growing in importance, even movies that do extremely well internationally still get anywhere from a third to more typically a half of their receipts from the US. I think that the really intruiging part about this film is that it will likely test whether the international market has grown enough that a big, expensive movie can be marketed primarily internationally, with the US as icing on the cake, instead of the other way around.

I really am hoping for The Blue Lotus to be one of them. If Andy Serkis is going to be Captain Haddock then he had better start refining his ability to insult people. As far as the US being the backbone of worldwide box office, I think that's only true to a degree. Adam Sandler films make little outside the US, but look at perceived flops such as Beowulf and The Golden Compass, which are going to be profitable by the time the worldwide box office is counted. A really good marketing campaign, big name directors, and a reprint of Tintin stories in the run up to the opening of the first film will ensure a tidy profit all round.

The TinTin cartoons were the staple diet of any British kid during the Summer holidays in the 1970's. I always looked on TinTin as the equivalent of Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Dick Tracy or any serialised character. it sure isn't everyone's flavour (see the 'u' in flavour? Bit of a giveaway about my cultural origins there) Nevertheless, it is a flavour a lot of people around the world love so, therefore, it IS a very cool thing that movies are going to be made from this property. I'm also curious to see how they handle the stylised nature of it. That also is cool. Still, as somebody said above me, I preferred Asterix. I'd actually love to see a 3D version of that someday.

monster house was good. mocap was just used to lend the animated characters movement, and lend the cinematography a hand.

we know that a lot of Americans don't care about Europe. And the guy who said Tintin is gay is very right, but not more gay than people in thights, spandex an capes. But anyway, back on topic. Tintin isn't my cup of tea either. But I'll give my heroes Peter Jackson and Spielberg a good chance at making something nice out of it. And Asterix has been made into a couple of live action movies already, which were good fun, so a 3D film about them seems not worth the trouble to me.

OK, let me set all U geeks & nerds straight, both Euro & Americano clowns. I was born in the 60's and I'm from Northern CA and I saw TIN TIN on TV (cartoons) and read TIN TIN books. I don't recall a comic but I'm guessing there was one... Seems to me you would've had to have lived under a rock or be a Gen Y kid to have missed this one. It deals with a Kid and a White Dog and a cast of other characters who go on adventures and such... Not like it was that popular or that interesting, cause it wasn't! And Yes, I was surprised too when I heard PJ & SS were in on this project!!! Didn't make sense but I'm figuring it'll be Great with them on board! (hope it's not another "Howard the Duck"!!! Bet alot of U clowns have never heard of that one either! But I digress, I also am a BIG fan of Serkis and his work so I'm betting he will bring alot to this Movie as well... I agree with the dude who's tired of all streams becoming Euro vs Amerikiki, really Clowns, enough already! And that IDIOT jesuslovesU666! Way to go U dumbass American Redneck fool, way to represent Americans!!! Thanks Fokker! That's not to say that you TIN TIN fans aren't a bit faggy too... and I don't mean Cigarettes! What the Hell is Asterix?
