regarding Tezuka. He can make deep philosophical ideas the main theme of his work yet make it accessible to children and adults alike. Plus he's no slouch telling stories through his artwork as well. A truly remarkable feat. It's not everyone who thinks of how best to entertain the audience while creating their work.

It seems like no matter how many animated features turn up in our theaters in any given year, they just keep making up new rules and selectively enforcing old ones until they can disqualify enough films to keep it restricted to three animated films in competition. PERSEPOLIS was robbed. Hell, even BEOWULF was robbed, and I barely count that as an animated film - but it should have won or lost on its own merits. Fuck the Oscars.
