writing backwards. I'm just kidding, it looks bad ass. The biggest upside to this site being pumped relentlessly by Warner Bros over Batman is that it might make Spielberg respond in kind and give us more Indy shit.

Because let's be honest, friends of mine. This movie might look and sound awesome but in the end it's just going to be comic book character fighting comic book character, with some clever comic book character plan to rule/fuck up the world that gets foiled and the girl gets captured and comic book character has to go save her and beat the other comic book character. But the Indy movie, I honestly don't know what to expect. I'm looking forward to Batman but Indy is the movie of the summer.

'face paint' theories for complainers
by zom-bot.com
Dec 14th, 2007
11:12:56 AM
like someone in another thread said- the original concept was that the joker's face was painted- either so much or by such caustic paint that his skin eventually was stained by it.it was kind of his own punishment by that point, driving him madder.

so i have a feeling that this story kinda goes that way. Face it, if you want to look like a clown, are already nutso, and need to go commit heavy crimes- do you go by some drug store halloween makeup that will rub off in the wind?- or do you grab the cheap, lead filled old expired white industrial paint you have laying around your abandoned warehouse?

my guess is the latter, and there's no tellin' what enough treatments of that will do. if anyone wants to try, let us know. in every pic it looks like the black and red run, but the white (that in early pics looks so thickly applied) begins to stain and crack off, revealing his skin kinda looks grayish white as a result.

we can hope?

The are SO over selling this movie. Even more, they're making the same fuckin' mistake that they made with every other Battard movie. They're selling the bad guy as the main attraction. HELLO!!! The movie's "The Dark Knight", as in Bat-fucking-Man. It's not "Joker's Super Pyscho Hour."

WB is selling this shit so hard that it's going to be the letdown of the summer. Every fanboy will go in having so many dreams of a movie that'll never be. It's going to be like MIB2, where every plot point, every gag, and anything even remotely cool was spoiled before you even bought a ticket.

We've got months to go and WB has got the hype machine so far into high gear that they can't see that they're oversaturating the market with pre-packaged buzz.

I'm going to see this movie, with the slight hope that it won't suck. However, I've got no faith in WB, Nolan's crappy re-envisioning (hated Begins), and Brokeback the Clown.

Even if this is a really good movie there's no way it's going to live up to the intensity some of the fans are building up in their imaginations and there will be backlash. Reminds me of the Matrix... the first was a good movie, then for some reason the hype for the second went through the roof, as if it would be the best thing ever. Remember, this movie is not the second coming, it's a Batman sequel. (And there's no need to point out to me that this will likely be a lot better than the Matrix sequel. That wasn't my point... crazy expectations from fanboys was.)

So far I'm digging the posters, but I'm hoping that there's even more surprises in store. Because if the expectations bar gets raised too high, then we all know what the outcome will be. I see parents and some fanboys all saying they hate the reboot by the Nolans and Goyer. "Its not for Kids," "Burton's was better." "Jack Nicholson owned the Joker," and more Brokeback Joker cracks than I care to even contemplate. The basic point of what I'm trying to say is this. It different. Its new. It is a reboot, and to be honest it is the closest thing we comic fans have had to Batman as we know him. "Gotham is no Downtown Chicago," I read in one post. But we forget the Uber Gothic Gotham was in fact an invention of Burton. And who the fuck would live in the Atlas statue ladden city of... I won't even say his name. Gotham would be a real place, the architecture in ChiTown isn's as overpowered by modern galss buildings as NYC so I think it was a good choice. I'm rambling; basicly look. Comic Batman is not for 6 year olds, nor does every comic flick need to be kid friendly, the best haven't been. Joker is not Cesar Romero or Nicholson...maybe not Ledger. He will always be however we think of him in or heads. Gotham should be a real city. And We are going to have a hell of a time at the movies in Summer 08! Lighten up sit back and enjoy the ride gentlemen

Sometimes you guys forget we're not the majority, we spend time on sites like this and as a result we seek out the overexposure you are complaining about. The only released poster to us was the brick wall one. The next two were itnernational posters that I still don't know how those brazillian sites got. This is just a pitcure somebody took at their local theater, so this poster hasn't been "released" online. Also, the trailer people are watching is a bootleg. It's not oversold, being a regular visiter to a movie site just means you are asking for oversaturation. Also, the viral campaign was aimed at diehard fans only, people who were gonna see the movie no matter what anyway.

A lot of people still have no clue that this movie even fucking exists. Go and talk to someone who is not a dork and who hasn't heard about this already. They'll say, "But they DID the Joker already! He died!" Then when you say they're doing it in the Batman Begins universe, they MAY say, "Oh, who's playing him?" They may also say, "Oh, I didn't see that." This is what is referred to as the Real World. They don't know about whysoserious.com. They don't know the words "permawhite" or "comics origin." They probably don't know what a "teaser poster" is or anything like that. The hype for the Real World, in which the Internet World is just a tiny subculture, has just barely started. We've had one magazine cover in England, just recently we've gotten posters (which I haven't seen at the movies yet), and there's one trailer to one movie. Calm the fuck down.

Batman wasn't like the comics because he doesn't read comics! But he probably saw the TV show, and as far as I am concerned the first Batman movie is a TV show to movie. But Burtons batman poster, and the fact that he has kiss in the soundtrack owns all of Nolans posters and music. And I really liked the BB music, but the original is so much better. And there is no way you can beat the first Batman poster, no matter how new poster posts AICN creates.

No, the internet is not a fad (*sigh* what a douchebag). But the majority of the world doesn't use it to seek out material on movies that won't be out until next year. Most people so far have seen the teaser trailer, maybe. Even as far as internet stories go, there's been more hype about the Star Trek movie, which won't be out in a full year.

I really like it. I'm not much of a horror film fan, but I am a Batman fan, and the Joker is a horror film character if ever there was one. I mean, it's a psychotic clown who sneaks around carving smiles into people's faces and manipulating an entire metropolis to turn against its own police force. What's not horrorific about that?

Burton's thing does seem to be to take something innocent and child-like and make it otherworldly and dark. Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc... So he did it with 60's Batman and made it dark and strange and weird. Worked out okay, but like all Burton's films it was a lot of show and almost no depth. Eh. Whuddyagonna do?

02:45:46 PM
They really need to push this because, like Begins, it isn't aiming at the douche teen market or the little kid market, and yet they still need to get the audience. Whatever, it's gonna be one hell of a movie. What Begins was lacking was a great villain, the reason for that being they wanted to focus more on Bruce/Batman than ever before. This time they don't need it so much (but you can guarantee he'll still have more focus than any of the previous Bats flicks) there's room for The Joker to be a huge imposing character. Whenever he's in the comics he's an overwhelming figure, center of insanity. It seems to be transferring to the screen well. Nicholson's Joker was a different creation. Burton's first Batman is all over the place with the ending being a joke (not a pun). Although it has some great quotes 'never rub another man's rhubarb!' 'he stole my balloons!' etc. all Nicholson lines. Batman Returns was a lot better, but again still not faithful enough Batman for my liking. Now the chance has arisen for the best adaptation yet. Better than the comics. Mwahahahaha!!!!!!!! Let's put a smile on that facE!!!

Try to relax. Other people in this same thread are saying the same thing. As for Trek, there has been a separate news story for each casting decision, right down to Red Shirt #5 and for every time Shatner declared whether or not he would be in it. You think those are news stories and not marketing? So this movie has two trailers and 4 posters, most of which no one has seen yet. It's going to be a competitive summer, it's going to get a lot worse.

Now break your pills in half from now on.

What over-hype?
by Chest Nimitz
Dec 14th, 2007
03:07:03 PM
How in the world are they over-hyping this movie? They've released one teaser, one theatrical trailer that debuts today, and a viral campaign. I think they are marketing this movie quite well, both building excitement with fanboys and regular movie-goers alike. the reason the marketing is emphasizing the joker is because hes such a universally recognized villain, maybe second only to darth vader. There is a lot of anticipation about his portrayal, so obviously theyre going to play that up. if you really hate the marketing of this film that much, its not too difficult to avoid it. There are films out there that deserve more flak for oversaturating the market: Spider-Man 3, PotC, Transformers, MIB 2...these are the egregious offenders. Dark Knight has handled itself pretty well compartively in my opinion.
We've seen Batman throughout the 90s. Jokers been MIA since '89.

Burton's Batman was dark and twisted for the sake of being dark and twisted. Burton turned a pro-PETA burglar into a supernatural dominatrix, and a tuxedo-wearing mob boss into a mutant leader of a sewer circus who bled fecal matter. And, as with all Burton movies, there was the constant presence of choir boys chanting "La la la la..." in the background. Burton even warped Batman himself, portraying him as willing to kill evil-doers.

This looks cool insomuch Nolan's direction on this latest iteration of the source material. However, anyone that has an appreciation for that source material knows that this character is not Freddie Kruger meets Norman Bates.

And Heath Ledger has never been menacing. Not even when he spat into his palm.

I wish everyone would get over Burton's Batman

Even Burton wasn't happy with it. He loved making Batman Returns which he basically turned into his trademark "nightmare before christmas" look with weird, dark characters. The first Batman was great when most people were only familiar with the Adam West series. Jack Nicholson had fun with the role, we had a pumping score and gothic looking city. But Batman was not the ninja/detective that we saw in Begins. Keaton could barely move in the suit and Nicholson wasn't nearly psychotic enough as the Joker. I mean, doesn't everyone remember the whole Joker killed my parents nonsense? The scene where Batman lets two crooks shoot him a close range? The head piece that never moved? The Batwing with the convenient balloon cable grappling devices? Michael Keaton's weirdo little man Bruce Wayne? This film, so far, looks like a step in the right direction. I have yet to see a crap Nolan film. The Following, Insomnia, Memento, The Prestige and Begins were all kick-arse films. Why not give him the benefit of the doubt?

"Batman was not the ninja/detective that we saw in Begins"

Please explain to me how Begins had the character more in the role of a detective than did the first Burton flick.

I don't dig on Burton's Batman flick as definitive by any stretch. And yet, at least his Batman could fight, figure stuff out, and invent his own stuff. Nolan's Batman can only fight... not that we can decipher much of it. And that's kinda it. Lucius Fox was the one that invented stuff and figured everything out.

Take Fox out of Nolan's Bat and you eliminate the detective aspect of the character.

Batman '89...
by micturatingbenjamin
Dec 15th, 2007

Batman '89 did have a perfectly choreographed ninja fight with an actual unmasked ninja with two swords...right after the museum. Remember? He has a martial arts fight that ends with his palm thingy jacking the guy, and then he swoops like Mark McKinney in that Kids in the Hall sketch...'Mind if I swoop?'...

Immortal...Huh... Okay,Nolan's Bruce Wayne is no inventor, but he /is/ a detective. He surveils the bad guys, using long distance mics and enhanced hearing and taking photos surreptitiously and even dressing like the homeless. I'm sorry if you missed it, but the Begins movie is like a procedural action flick for vigilantism rather than cops. Standard cop-show detective undercover work. As for '89 Batman, that Bruce Wayne used his superkickass computers and such to solve the Smilex mystery. I guess he was supposed to be a chemist, too, to know how to identify it, and a bit of a weirdo.

Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne is a favorite of mine; edgy, weird, and seemingly at a loss for how society works. But his Batman hasn't aged very well...a superhero who can fight but has to move his head with his shoulders to look around? Yeah, good luck with that when most of the guys will have submachine guns...His tear-away rubber mask also gives me the jibblies.

In a fight, straight up, Nolan's Batman would snatch Burton's Batman right off the set of Halloweentown, and the sickening crunch you hear from the dark would be the REAL Dark Knight teaching that phony a lesson.

To me, Batman has been the Denny O'Neal version...lean, mean, and relies on his stuff as well as his mind, but the criminals are scared of him, because he's to criminals what criminals are to most folks. Nolan's Batman harkens back to those days, for my money.

Batman '89 would welcome a Robin character because it would be 'off-the-wall' and 'unexpected'. Nolan's Batman would NEED a Robin to keep him from becoming a brooding, dark monster all the way through, focusing only on the grim and ugly things in life.

Lucius Fox, to be fair, didn't invent jack, he oversaw R&D on all the gadgets that Wayne needed to use in his nightly crusade against those who would prey on the fearful. So, no points for him, it's to give the movie versimilitude. No one in the 'nearly real world' of Begins is a chemist, scientist, detective, inventor, multibillionaire. They tried to make it comic-book-y, but not to stretch the suspension of disbelief wafer thin.

I fall in the camp of '89 was a good Batman when you compare it to '68 Batman. And has memorable moments, and was one of my favorite movies for a LONG time. But Nolan's Batman IS Batman for today, like it or not. And yes, he needs a new director of photography for the action pieces involving multiple foes, or something to give us more than the horrified faces of the criminals witnessing the brutal maiming of their cohorts.

But, then again, I want to FEAR the Dark Knight...to understand that when your buddy Knuckles doesn't reply to your call, you know that soon, you'll feel the mailed gloves around your body parts and then the screaming and breaking begins, and you wonder if Batman's going to leave you alive, or go too far this time.

I can't wait for this flick.

Amen to every bit of that.

If I might add to the unrealistic of Burton's Batman, Batman's costume also featured eyeshadow attached to the mask (as seen in Batman Returns); and a thick leather cape that never got in the way (during the scene in which Batman first encounters Jack Napier, where he is hits a man with his forearm from behind a wall, you can plainly see how two very different capes were used in that scene).

As for Robin, I actually hope that Nolan NEVER gets around to him. There are soooo many ways to wrongly portray Robin. But that won't stop me from suggesting a portrayal of my own liking:

First of all, change Robin from a 14-year-old boy to a 14-year-old girl. Not only is that presedented by comic book cannon, but it's also much more alluring. (Robin IV was a girl, and so was the Robin from TDKR.) Next, completely revamp the costume. Even Tiny Toons made fun of the fact that Robin's costume serves only to draw fire away from Batman LOL. Let's try a costume composed mostly of blacks or very dark greens, with some equally dark reds. Give the girl a mask that covers much more of her head. Between she and Batman, she needs the protection more than he does, right?

Not the poster - that kicks butt. What annoys me is the fact that you have a bunch of droolers on this site yammering about how this or that isn't the Joker, but never follow up with what exactly this nearly 70 year old character is supposed to be. People like that give me the impression that, were they to make their own translation of the character, potential audiences would not be seized with the inclination to pay to see it.
Joker Oversaturation...
by micturatingbenjamin
Dec 15th, 2007
01:56:10 AM
Okay...I'm the guy who's walking into a theater lobby to see...let's say...'Atonement' with my girlfriend. When she goes to take a piss before the movie, I look at the posters for coming films, and this poster of this fucked up looking guy writing something in (blood?) some liquid...and a question 'Why So Serious?'. I'd be confused for a sec, then see the Batman logo, and go 'Holy Shit. The Joker! That's awesome!'...This guy that I'm portraying here has the attention span of a hamster, and doesn't spend his time on the 'net looking this shit up, he's the casual flick fan. He hasn't been scouring the web playing the ARG for the media blitz, or looking at aintitcool.com for the last couple of months for sneak peeks at pics of a damned Hong Kong airport.

So, you want to make someone notice your movie...you make a poster like this, and put the Batman logo at the bottom. The Begins poster was just the symbol made of bats right? I can't remember, because it was just simple, without anyone's face. Both of the posters don't show faces, really, just iconic images of the two main characters...Batman...and the Joker. You see just this poster, and you're intrigued...

Let's compare this to Batman and Robin's menagerie of banners hanging all over the lobby, showing everyone from Bane to Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze, including Batgirl's sausage casing suit, and the Bat-Nipples, et al. For crying out loud, they SATURATED the marketing with those posters for EVERY character. As an aside, around the same time Judge Dredd was coming out, and I was looking forward to it. When they unmasked him, it was more than a little disappointing, but the media blitz wasn't in the mix there, I did actually see it in the theater, and I liked it...but because I like Sly in just about any damned thing....So, you see, this isn't oversaturation or preferring the enemies to the heroes...not yet, anyway.

I can see the point in emphasizing the Joker as being a little pandering to the set that would like it. BUT. If the average filmgoer sees this poster, what it will do is remind them of the last five minutes of the last flick, and get them in the mood for a new Batman movie, and wondering what the hell this new Joker is all about.

Finally, ask yourself if in this age of kids who think it's the height of comedy to gang beat up one of their peers and set it to music and put it up on YouTube, that 'Wait 'till they get a load of me.' is going to even penetrate their media gummed brains. Yeah, the 13 and ups I know...(a few younger relations, and their friends)...they'd laugh their asses off at the Nicholson Joker, and would like this (and I HATE MYSELF FOR USING THIS WORD AT ALL...) "juggalo" Joker. This, too is the Joker for our times. Not the avant garde anti-establishment 'tortured artist' but a sick fuck with a lot of knives. This guy would give Batman a run for his money, because his plans are not simple criminality or epic world-domination, they're just unbridled mayhem wrapped around a sick turd's sense of humor.

I think the actual poster should show just that white wall with the Batman logo/Joker face. Most casual guys wouldn't know right off who Ra's Al Ghul is, unless they watched the Animated Series faithfully or caught the episode with him in it. But EVERYONE knows that when you say Batman...his main nemesis is The Joker, and that's what people were excited about at the end of Batman Begins.

This is the Joker...elements of the Jack Nicholson depiction:

- Vanity turned into Self-Loathing

- A run of the mill criminal somehow driven mad, or already mad, and looking for thrills

- Revenge against society or one man he sees as his rival for the attention he craves

What would I like to see in a Joker in the films that would make me happy? The Joker started as a roman a clef of the myriad grotesques in 'Dick Tracy's' rogue's gallery, in my opinion. He morphed into a showman as time went on, getting more and more outlandish with his schemes to defraud and demoralize the citizens of Gotham and make Batman look like a damned joke. Finally, around the 70s, Joker had to compete with darker Batman villains like Two-Face's more brutal turn, and the horrific Man-Bat...so the Joker stepped up his game and became ruthless as well as flamboyant, as in the JokerFish escapade. I want a film version to be true to the universe it sets up. This Joker would be out of place in, say, the old Batman TV-Show. Just like Egghead or the Liberace villain (I can't remember the name at the moment) would be woefully out of place with their cleverly and hackneyed-named henchmen in Nolan's Batman universe.

The question isn't 'what is or isn't the Joker' really. The Joker has been a lot of things over the years. He's gone from typical criminal with a gimmick into THE icon of the 'bad clown'.

What I want is the prototype for the Miller 'Dark Knight Returns' Joker. A man whose obsession with Batman becomes a struggle of ideologies and wills with the arena being Gotham City.

Sorry, I'm a comics/movie dork, and I love the Nolan Batman. If you don't like this movie, it doesn't change my opinion one bit. Woe to those who allow 'haters' or 'fanboys' to waver their opinions one way or another. I personally think this is great for what Nolan has done before. Sorry if you pine for the days when Cesar Romero had a goddamned moustache under his makeup, and constantly mugged for the camera, and upstaged the Riddler...Hey, the past is back that way, and it's a nice place, from what I understand.

I'll forge ahead, thanks, and take the great with the bad.

A bit late but why do you think internet hype isn't real hype?

We're not in 1995 any more. Everyone has the internet these days. If you think the net is just a handfull of nerds still then you need to wake up. Anyone with a passing interest in movies (the majority of the world) will know their fair share about The Dark Knight. It's everywhere online therefore it's every knows about it.

If it's hyped on the internet then it is officially hyped - the TV and mags are just a reminder for those with a short attention span nearer the film's release.

To be honest with you, I do love Romero's Joker. I love Nicholson's and Hammill's Joker, and, having loved Batman Begins and Nolan's take on the whole mythos, Ledger's Joker seems to be one of the coolest translations of the character ever. My point was that you, so far, seem to be one of the very few people who will back up your claim. See, typically, all one usually sees on sites like these are "Ledger's gonna suck! That's not the Joker!"........ aaaaand, what is the Joker, then? Again, the character is three decades short of a century old. One of the most brilliant aspects of the Batman mythos is the renewability of the character. As such, saying that there is a definitive Batman or Joker is kind of like saying that there is one translation and one translation only. I don't think we're disagreeing here, I'm just tired of people (not you) saying stuff without backing it up. And, again, were they to have an opportunity to show off their version of the Joker, I doubt I'd be as impressed. Case in point, there's a fan film on the 'Net called Grayson. Look, its a really nice looking film, but its all over the freaking place, featuring virtually every DC character from Robin to Green Lantern to Ginger Snap to Ambush Bug. That may be a fan's way of doing a movie, but to me it looks like the cinematic equivalent of being trapped at a party by a talkative philatelist. Oh, and I have to agree about the marketing thing. Batman Begins was praised for keeping the market to a respectable level - I appreciate that in light of having to still pick commercials out of my throat for the first Star Wars prequel.

IMO, too much hype is when you get hit with TV spots every 30 minutes, and when Burger King has their promo in full swing. Besides, can you really tell me the last time a movie REALLY lived up to your expectations. Fanboys always expect more than reality.
