Looks like Braveheart meets Caveman meets the guy behind Stargate. Looks like Emmerich may be trying to mix archaeology with Biblical references as the referenced "mountain of gods" seems to be the Tower of Babel. He did kind of the same thing of incorporating history and legend in "Stargate" and "Independence Day." Those fast attack ostriches are most likely Phorusrhacids or "terror birds". They were also featured in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and the classic "Mysterious Island" film. And the mammoths look like a Discovery Channel special, that is, fake.

Dec 13th, 2007

Assuming you're looking for more authenticity, what language would you suggest they speak? No culture even remotely that old left behind any trace of their language. Would you feel better if they made up a phony language and provided English subtitles? I would bet that idea was on the table, but it's a lot more work for something that's no less phony than just having the actors speak English directly, and subtitled movies still lose a certain percentage of your potential audience automatically.

by ZeroCorpse
Dec 14th, 2007

No scientist today uses "BC" because it has developed religious attachments. The correct terminology is Before Common Era, or BCE.

I *was* looking forward to this, but now it just looks like "300" or "Alexander" in a different time period. I was expecting a great, arty, non-wordy show about humans surviving in a hostile world. Instead what we're getting is a war movie that wants to be part "Return of the King" and part "Scorpion King" apparently. So to use an oft-used term: Meh.

Your idea of silence or a made-up language of grunts would work well for a different movie (& did for _Quest For Fire_)set a million years ago; but this is set 12,000 years ago, and we know the languages spoken then were as complex as the ones spoken now. Linguists agree all existent languges are of the same level of complexity & have been since we left Africa 70 to 50,000 years ago, if not long before that. (See Pinker's _The Language Instinct_.)If it's as complex as English, the film's language might as well be translated into English (unless you feel _Spartacus_ copped out by not using subtitles). This comment, though, should not be taken as any sort of support for Emmerich's talent or interest in seeing the film; there'll be lots of things to bitch about, just not well-spoken Neolithics. (Ironically, the one thing I like about _Stargate_ is the aliens not speaking English; makes them seem more alien, and the plotting less convenient.)And by the way, no one believes cavemen communicated solely by cave painting, even "fucking morons".
And furthermore...

Node, there's enough genuine Hollywood bullshit to rail against; don't attack someone who understands that, outside of silents, either translation, dubbing or subtitles are necessary international conventions, not "Hollywood bullshit".

brain dead stupidity? wh yis this film so brain dead. surely it's just there to have a bit of fun for a couple of hours. i don't mind laughing at the daft bits, and the dodgy acting. it's better than 99% of any low budget stuff put out by the sci fi channel. how people com[pare i do not know. at least big budget stuff like this is a little interesting!

and we already had the same in THE RELIC and half a dozen other movies. IT'S NOT THRILLING ANY MORE. That said, let's take a look at the board: The chick looks cute, but the rest of the scenes didn't overwhelm me too much.

To Memories-of-Murder: I meant to indicate a hypothetical movie a million years old, but it came out as if I meant Quest For Fire; sorry, of course you're right. And reconstucted Nostratic for a film would be cool. Node: I agree, this movie is going to be dumbed-down horseshit, but as long as the characters speak their language as well as Bushmen (which is not more primitive than English), regular English still sounds fine to me.

When did he grow man boobs? Sadly, I wish he was in Sky High 2 or a Sky High TV show rather than this. Not to judge it too harshly, this looks like a lot of nice visuals, but there's also kind of a generic 'meh' feeling to it too. Sounds like they're using a script that was written as a prequel to the Scorpion King. I like the suggestion this is the tale of the Tower of Babel. That or it's a build up to Noah and the ark. But Gibson already did something like that with Apocalypto (action hero fighting to survive in a pre-civilization that goes unrecorded by history). Can't they just fucking make CONAN or even HE-MAN already?

First of all, they are not "ostriches" OR Diatryma[which are supposedly herbivorous]. if anything, they are phrorusrhacids which actually lived in SOUTH, not even north, AMERICA - they were NEVER in Africa. And unless they're in the pre-desert Sahara, none of those temples should exist...
