As a big Robert E Howard fan, and I believe these new movies will be closer to the source material, I can't wait. I hope the new Solomon Kane movie that's coming out is good too. Butler would be excellent as Conan, but the role is a little to similar to Leonidas in 300, you know, warrior king. Not to sure about the McT thing. He's been inactive for a while.

Jett, I agree. They need to nail the script. I enjoyed the Arnie films for what they were. But CGI and FX nowadays will allow for a much grander vision. Keeping in line with Howard's epic, although pulp at its heart, story telling.

I would be disappointed TiNSelTowN TeRRoR if the folks behind this produced a movie as you suggest. Conan has the ability to become a movie on the scale of Lord of the Rings. It really does have that epic nature, landscapes, characters and creatures etc. But R-rated yes, cause the guy killed a lot of people and monsters.

I love to see McTiernan's take on Conan, he can do a reboot or even the oft aborted Crown of Iron justice. Not so sure about Butler, he's too lispy, can't shake his Scottish brogue and emotes rage by shouting like Brain Blessed! Conan needs to be a bit more exotic, I want a gnarly Frazetta Conan!

I can honestly say that directing is much like hitting a ball in baseball. When you connect you REALLY hit it out of the park. But how often can anyone legitmately connect? Sure Great Directors like legendary hitters can really chop wood, but the rest only have a few homers in them. So the real question is can McT pull this off without resorting to juice? After Rollerball, I'm not so sure but I LOVE the conan stories, so I'm praying he has at least 3 homers left in him.

I'm already sick to death of this screaming, spitting, lisping piece of shit. I know 300 was a hit and Hollywood loves to latch on to the Next Big Thing, but this guy has been starring in nothing but shit films since he began, and while 300 has its qualities as a piece of dumb entertainment, you could have slipped anybody else with an 18-pack into that role and nobody would have given a damn. It's not like he played fucking Spartacus, or even Maximus. People just wanted to see some motherfucking heads roll, and he happened to be the guy swinging the sword. But, I have to wonder if he hasn't been swinging his other "sword" around the casting and production offices, because it seems he's getting just as much potential work as Colin Farrell used to, with astonishingly less actual talent.

The film concludes when tribesmen realize that Conan is a closet tap-dancer (cue "extravagant musical number"). A disgraced Conan is banished and walks into the sunset as William Shatner saunters into camera range ("Why didn't they cast me in this movie. I'm worth trillions at the boxoffice"). Cut to THE END end title (similar style as the DEXTER'S LABORATORY graphics). Between this one and the 13TH WARRIOR, I dunno...

Dude, Conan was/is not dumb. Your basing your assumption on Arnold's wooden performance in moves that had little to nothing in common with REH's books. Conan's a master of linguistics and a military genius on the level of Alexander and Napoleon. He's a master sword maker/blacksmith (only touched upon in the movies with then mentioning that he knows "the riddle of steel).

'Conan's a master of linguistics and a military genius on the level of Alexander and Napoleon.' Erm... you are talking about an entirely fictitious character, right? With a big sword and bigger muscles? Smashes lots of heads and hangs out with women with big gazongas? Where does the 'literary genius' bit fit in? Did I miss something? Anyway, it's a sucky idea for a movie. One might thing McT might be too busy avoiding a shower incident with Mr Big than thinking about remaking some mid 80's ho hum Arnie vehicle.

Love the flick, love the characters. Not sure about Butler though, he's got the eyes, the voice and the attitude...I'm just not sure if he's big enough. He'd have to do double his workout routine from 300, not just a six-pack but really buffed out all over, just to look right with the long hair and loincloth. (In 300 he had a cape and helmet to fill his shit out). And they'd have to surround him with shorter guys. Oh, and I liked T3. Other than the stupid jokes here and there I like it better than T2, which, like the first Batman movie, has aged badly IMO.

...yes, you did miss something: Omar saying "military genius" not "literary genius". Decidedly different things, and Conan -- literary character that he is -- was written as a military genius, by R.E.Howard, whose literary genius is somewhat debatable (good, fun pulp, but genius?). They made a fantasy movie for pro wrestling fans, basically. Schwarzenegger is a graceless oaf, sort of like the generally held, ill-informed image most people have of Conan. Howard's character is infinitely cooler and more complex. And Conan's is not a revenge story.

A few things:
by DocPazuzu
Dec 13th, 2007
01:37:04 PM
1) I love Milius's film, but it's certainly no true Conan film. In fact, the character is so far removed from Howard's vision that if you changed the names of characters and places in the film, nobody watching it would say "Shit! That's Conan!"

2) Howard's Conan is a cunning, lightning-quick, giant, semi-feral, steel-thewed absolute fucking killer. Milius's Conan is a sluggish, clumsy, lumbering fathead who depends on his sidekicks to get him out of scrapes more often than not.

3) Butler would be an awful Conan, and I say that as someone who genuinely likes Butler a lot.

4) I love The 13th Warrior. Say what you want about it, but it's one of the more accurate depictions of viking-era Scandinavian life - well, minus the war against neanderthals on horseback. Also, I've always thought that Vladimir Kulich, the guy who plays Buliwyf, would at least visually have been an excellent older Conan (if you dyed his hair black and beefed him up). The guy is the spitting image of the Ernie Chan-era Conan from the comics.

5) McTiernan on the top of his game would be a good choice for director, but that guy doesn't exist anymore.

6) I call bullshit on this whole story.

This guy should be in Conan or T4!

Believe me, I also know Howard very well. The only reason his is the definitive version is because all other versions have sucked ass so far. Of course it's beautifully shot. It also has what is probably the best and most appropriate film score ever. That still doesn't change the fact that Milius just didn't try very hard to capture Howard's Conan or the Hyborian Age. Besides, Milius has more or less admitted that he used the property to make the "viking" movie he had always wanted to make.

He's portrayed as being well-toned, but sorta lanky and Tarzanesque sometimes. He certainly doesn't look like Arnie did in his prime, although Arnie was a good Conan. Either way, it won't be Conan without tits, bloodshed, and beheadings. Conan is an animal who basically kills, eats, and fucks. Direct this like it's meant to be NC-17, and then shave it down to an R for theaters.

You can't take some regular actor and send him to the gym for a couple months. You need to get a bodybuilder that can act. (I'm not saying Arnold was a great actor) If the actor is under 6'5 or under 240lbs then its not Conan, sorry.

LOL. Yes thats a good start. But Conan is WAY more than that. He's whip-crack smart, a leader of men. A man's man if you will and cunning as well as Doc Paz pointed out above. I love the way Howard portrays some of the "civilized" men in the books. Soft, pampered, perfumed weenies, which automatically make Conan appealing by contrast.

Doc Pazuzu is dead-on, everything he's said about how to make this work is 100% right, spot-on. Conan the Barbarian is a fun movie, but it ain't a Conan movie. It's close, but that ain't Conan. I wonder if these producers could find a way to buy the old Poledouris score; I don't see how anyone else could write a better Conan theme. Gnarly Frazetta/RE Howard Conan all the way. Make it good, make it wicked, make it a hard Rated R and do Mr. Howard some justice, and I will see the damn thing three times in the theater. This could be amazing. Don't fuck it up!

And, right, remember that those old Howard stories were really focused on the barbarism vs. civilization thing (with savagery always coming out on top). That old Robert E. Howard biopic -- The Whole Wide World -- wasn't a great movie but it evokes a much better sense of who Conan is than the entire Milius picture.... Poledouris score aside. Gnarly Frazetta Conan!

NO FUCKING WRESTLERS FOR CONAN!
by Sledge Hammer
Dec 13th, 2007

Surely there has to be one aspiring actor out there who has genuine talent and the kind of physique that can be molded into a convincing Cimmerian for the big screen.

McTiernan kind of worries me though, he hasn't been on game for a long time, and even when he was at his full blooded best, I don't know if he has the grit for a full blooded Conan. Yeah, at his best he can make big, violent, entertaining films, but I still can't see him painting a proper Conan canvas, I just don't know that he's got the vision and scope to deliver on that, even at his best.

And while I personally love the Milius Conan movie, and would have loved to have seen one final outing with Milius and Arnie to tie that series off and send it out in style, that time has passed, so how about this time they actually make the R.E. Howard version of Conan? Now there's a "remake" or "re-imagining" with an actual purpose for once. And no pg-13 bullshit either, he's a barbarian, a reaver, not a fucking babysitter, so the film needs to be primal and full blooded, not toned down or packed with cheesy 'humor'. Take the material seriously, play it straight, give it an epic sense of scope, and don't castrate it of it's rough edges. Conan is all about blood and passion, and any new Conan film needs to have plenty of both. So bring it, or by Crom I'll kill you all.

Pretty obvious isn't it? It's because he is from fuckin' SPARTAAAA!!!!!! Which of course now also qualifies him for pretty much anything and everything from potential presidential candidate to the new jesus.....well in the mind of hollywood and fans at least. Never doubt the power of an angry righteous man on film. Mel Gibson practically made a career from it playing essentially the same 'angry at people killing his wife' guy in pretty much everything he made. We all bought it hook, line and sinker until he started getting drunk in public and calling cops 'sugartits', then we forgot about the righteous part of his film characters and started thinking more about the crazy part. So mr Butler, should be just fine for a while so long as he doesn't get drunk in public, and if so, has a fallback plan..(hint get good also behind the camera)

But even if Milius doesn't direct an older CONAN film, McT could still get post Governor Arnie to do a real bloody bad ass Conan film. CONAN should be Arnie first film outside of Governorship...the hype of his first film would sell it into box-office gold. How can Avi Lerner not see the money in that!!!!

McTiernan's not so hot and his DVD commentaries are awful

Dec 13th, 2007
08:45:53 PM

God, I hated McTiernan's DVD commentary for "Die Hard." I went in expecting some great behind the scenes info about the flick, and instead I get two hours of him waxing on about how he wanted joy in the film and comparing it to Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Please, give me a break. When Jackson DeGovia, the film's production designer, gives a better commentary on the film than the director, you know you have a bad commentary track.

And thank God McTiernan didn't direct "A Princess of Mars" back in the 90's. Read this link: http://tinyurl.com/2vwrmr

According to Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, McTiernan wanted to change John Carter of Virginia to "John Carter of Vagina" and have him be an alcoholic. Great, McT, real nice. Not to mention he helped prevent the film "Smoke and Mirrors" from getting made.

Now I admit he's made some terrific films in the past. But why do people think he's so great? Lest you forget, he also made "Basic," "Rollerball," and "Die Hard with a Vengeance."

and that's Arnold. Yeah, he's too old now to re-boot the Conan saga, but any attempt at a re-make with a new actor will flop... just as the new Arnold-less Terminator movie will flop. I'm not saying Arnold should come back (I think he's too old now). I'm saying leave those franchises alone and move on to something else, because nobody can replace Arnold in his prime. Hollywood has too many morons working in high places, corporate drones who fail to realize that actors like Arnold ARE these franchises.

13th warrior is an awesome film. I just hope we get some kind of tie in from the old Conan to the new. Get Arnie to cameo as a king or something before the new hero goes off on adventure. I hate retreads and rather have movies that respect franchises that remain popular with the fans. My one tiff with the new Batman movies. From MovieHole.net...John McTiernan would have to be one of my favourite filmmakers. Yes, I know, he screwed up the “Rollerball” remake… but most of his back catalogue is as solid as Schwarzenegger’s butt cheeks. And speaking of, there’s a rumour floating around that McTiernan might be headed back into Schwarzenegger territory – he of course directed the Oak in “Predator” (1987) – for the long gestating “King Conan”. As Aint it Cool points out though, ‘’ last I heard, wasn’t he staring down the barrel of some jail time?’’. Unless they fit one of those homing devices to his ankles – like Shia had in “Disturbia” – and if he tries to leave the set to wire tap someone it explodes? There’s no word on whose going to be playing Robert Howard’s musclebound hero in the new “Conan” movie but there’s still a chance Schwarzenegger “may be back”. Earlier today we had word from an old-time scooper who said Schwarzenegger might be talking with WB about a cameo in “T4” and Nu Image about a role in “Conan” (whilst this site says Gerard Butler could be the new "Conan"). Of course, and like the McTiernan item, both remain rumours until confirmed/denied/debunked/remo ved.

...let's set up a future film that will NEVER HAPPEN. Great idea. Maybe when he's 90 he can come back for Terminator 7 too while we're at it. Face facts man, Arnie is done with films. He's moved on. It's over. Maybe he'll do the odd cameo here or there, but he's not a movie star anymore, he's a fucking politician, and he doesn't show any indication that he wants to go back to being an action hero movie star ever again either. Yeah, it kinda sucks, but sometimes you just have to accept the way life is. At this point I'd say that Arnie is about as likely to return to full time acting as he was to return to full time bodybuilding back in the day once his acting career took off. Sure, he might have a fling with it again just to show that he can, just like he did with Bodybuilding, but all in all he's done and moved on. And there's no point in waiting for the return of something that's never gonna happen. Just enjoy the films he already gave us and leave your obsessions for people like Stallone who are still in the game and have every chance of a comeback.

...some time ago which I had read in a Swedish newspaper. It was an interview with Fredrik Malmberg, head of Paradox Entertainment who currently own the rights to Conan (and the rest of Howard's properties). The item never showed up on AICN, but what Malmberg basically said was that they were aiming for a new trilogy of films starting with Conan as a thief and progressing through the years until he ends up King of Aquilonia in the third and final film. Malmberg insists on being true to Howard's vision as much as possible and wants an unknown for the role since a believable Conan can't have any previous baggage of the type a known actor would bring.

I don't know where ABking gets his ideas from since WB lost the film rights in June of this year from what I understand. Just his usual jizz-dreams I suppose.

CYCLO & ET ALL - ARNOLD IS NOT CONAN
by Bass Bastardson

I love the Arnold Conan films... well, at least the first one. But Conan was created in the 1930's and has had many incarnations before the Governator came along. In fact the character in the films was barely recognizable as Conan. His entire backstory and personality were changed, as was the setting - Rober E Howard's fictional Hyborian age was all but unrecognizable. Imagine if you will a Lord of the Rings movie where Frodo is just a dim witted small person who's never even seen the Shire because he lives in ancient Greece/Norway hybrid instead of Middle Earth and instead of needing to destroy a magic ring, he needs to rescue Pegasus from the minions of Loki. That is about how close the Arnold/Millius Conan is to the actual source material. That doesn't mean it is a bad movie - I love it. It just isn't the definitive Conan story you seem to think it is. Thus far Conan The Cimmerian has never been translated to the screen properly. A new version would be highly welcome in my book.

...about Arnie's Conan, and remember I love the film, is that he is FUNDAMENTALLY different from Howard's original. The latter was the very definition of a free spirit, unbent by the will of men and who would rather be dead than be a slave. The former, however, is a broken lunkhead who, if he hadn't been turned free, would have been perfectly happy spending the rest of his days a slave/gladiator. In Milius's film he more or less accidentally discovers the value of freedom whereas the whole point of Howard's barbarian is that he was ALWAYS free and couldn't be tamed by any force on Earth.
