the coincidence of him finding the box, the world ending in a week, and he and his son playing a part in causing it. It seems too coincidental. I, ROBOT is better than most give it credit for, but still not as good as it seemed it was going to be considering it was being made by the guy that made DARK CITY.

rather than the dumb hoary commercialism and mediocrity of I Robot. I suspect Proyas was strongarmed by the suits and Smith's contractual imput with that film, hope he has more latitiude to explore his own vision on this apocalyptic thriller. He's a brilliant director, capable of further greatness.

His arm waving, sputtering, manic stammering, spitting while he talks, spazzy overacting, it's all gold. I'm a huge Cage fan. He's one of those actors like Schwarzenhegger, Heston, Seagal, who you look forward to seeing them play the same persona in slightly different scenarios. You watch and wonder how he will Cagify each situation. Sure, you're right, he's not an accomplished thespian, but he's developed a ridiculous screen persona in an age where ridiculous screen personas are almost extinct. Could be global warming.

. . . I thought it was once linked to either Aranofsky or Kelly. I have more faith in them than in Proyas. Cage sure as hell doesn't make me any more excited about it. Now I'm not so sure about it. Sounds like it could be another cool, TwilightZone-like premise that isn't quite enough to carry a whole film. Kind of like Identity or Frailty, two films that I liked but could have been better.

Just watched it a few weeks ago before my trip to LA and the tar pits. I think it still holds up nicely. It gives a much better impact than say The Day After and certainly begs the question, would you risk your life for true love?

why the guy doesn't have like MEGA bankable go-to guy kinda status. Aside from how much of a masterpiece 'The Crow' is, I actually think that 'I, Robot' is the closest we've come to a great, semi-intelligent, entertaining sci-fi blockbuster in a long time. And Proyas should carving up his own Terminator trilogy at this point. Is anyone else kept awake at night knowing that McG is visualising the future war, especially when Proyas is the only man for the job.

Merrick doesn't have any credibility. Week after week he rips on things that he seems to young or immature to understand. I've never written against anyone on this site (well I did write nasty messages to the original tv writer on the site because he refused to give coverage to Millennium when it was on the air and now everyone creams themselves at the possibility of a Frank Black crossover in the new X-Files movie but I digress.) Merrick's tag lines and articles are snotty, condescending and often rude. H doesn't seem to respect movies or their history in any way. Miracle Mile floored me. It was pretty amazing so when Merrick says he doesn't recall it being good, he likely means HE NEVER SAW IT!

Never heard of it? Well, maybe that's because it only ever appeard on VHS in Australia and reportedly also on VHS/LD in Japan. It's an absolutely jaw-droppingly great film and I can't believe it remains buried in some vault. Proyas himself told me he may work on a DVD relese after he finishes post-production on I, ROBOT but yeah, obviously that never happened.

I didn't particularly enjoy the flick a whole helluva lot, but Cage was pretty damn good in it. He got to be flamboyant as Castor Troy, and then toned it down significantly well as Archer. Also, why are people forgetting about ADAPTATION.?

If you "don't recall it being a particularly good film", I doubt that you ever actually saw it. If you did, then you definitely need to give it another look. MIRACLE MILE is one of my personal favorite films of that entire decade. It has real mood to it, a palpable sense of doom. The romance between Anthony Edwards and Mare Winningham plays out against a backdrop of panic and insanity. Inspired filmmaking. Great Tangerine Dream score. It's first-rate.

Threads plays off really well. In some ways, I like it better than the other two Nuclear Holocaust movies of that era: Testament and The Day After. I hope Proyas can get some mileage out of Cage. A few weeks back HBO or Starz had Cage's Wicker Man on... Man, it was awful and souless to boot (I saw the 2nd half of it). The only enjoyment I got out of it was seeing Cage punch some of the chicks near the end. But mostly filth and a waste of talent. I mean Cage wastes his own talent now. But Ellen Burstyn? Leelee Sobieski? Oh well, at least I can put Miracle Mile on my list.

Props here for the film, too. When you consider how relatively low budget it is, it just shows you don't need big FX, just a great script and solid direction to pull off a tense story. I think the most amazing thing about the film is that it has to be the result of going to the well once too often (like the Adam Sandler movie plotline gag in the Awesom-O South Park episode). "Young love storyline #2122: two kids have great date night...cool Los Angeles nightlife...except...except... the world is about to end because of nuclear war!" "Great, kid, run with that!"

And for the record I enjoyed Next - I knew what it was going in - straight to video - and it was just as enjoyable and fun and BELIEVABLE as, say The Rock... I Robot wasn't great but it didn't suck - unlike the great big throbbing stinking pile of SHIT that was Garage Days! Both Cage and Proyas have the potential to kick this one out of the park - but they've also both proven they can do mediocre-to-lame so let's hope they go for GOLD and not pay cheque...
