in the poster. Signs was good, but Unbreakable was better. I don't care what any haters think. I like all his movies, yes even The Village and Lady in the Water. I liked them better than Signs, and call it pride if you want but I like they way Night puts himself in the movie. If he sucked as an actor that would be different. I mean I don't see anybody bashing on King for all his cameos. Some were cameos, but there were a couple of full fledge roles. Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill being the absolute best.

I think Night is an interesting filmmaker, unfortunately the success of The 6th Sense inflated the expectations of everything he has done since (this inflation may have occurred most in Night's mind). The success of The 6th Sense also seemed to make Night feel everything he did had to have that twist ending. Unbreakable is a nice meditation of our need for a hero mythology, though the end is way too abrupt. I really liked Signs a lot. I know a lot of people don't, but Signs isn't really an alien invasion movie. It's a movie about the importance of faith, it just happens to have aliens in it. The Village is a great idea (and an important one) that doesn't really work in the very literal media film is. I grew up in a small town in the midwest and I can assure you that fear of the outside world does keep people from advancing. The Lady in the Water is deeply, deeply flawed but it is still very well acted and crafted. There is a jump-on mentality in these talkbacks and in geekdom in general. There aren't many who think for themselves, they just pile on. Not every artist is going to hit a home run every time out.

It was Mr. Bamberger who met the auteur at a dinner party ("Night's shirt was half open — Tom Jones in his prime"), became awestruck ("What kind of power could he have over me?") and started taking deeply embarrassing notes. How could Mr. Shyamalan have known that his Boswell would place him in a biblical light? The book finds some relevance for Night (as Mr. Bamberger calls him) in the fact that the word night, like the word day, shows up early in the Book of Genesis. It also describes an actress in Night's presence as "like Moses before the burning bush." As is the case anytime Hollywood lets its hair down, this account exposes deep fault lines of privilege, power and class. Consider the story of Paula, who was Night's assistant when he was ready to spring his "Lady in the Water" screenplay upon the Walt Disney Company. Among Paula's virtues were the ability to make hot chocolate exactly the way Night likes it and to fly cross-country without going to the bathroom. The screenplay was far too important to be left unattended. Paula "never confused her workaday world with the lives of the rich and superrich with whom she was in daily contact," Mr. Bamberger writes approvingly. He himself has more problems in this area, as he vicariously appreciates Night's home outside Philadelphia ("it was maybe the grandest of all the horse-country estates"), Night's staff, Night's fresh fruit and Night's "chicken with perfect grill lines." The last two were shared by Night's cast and crew, and the book takes note of his generosity. But back to Paula: in a story that will live in legend, Mr. Bamberger reveals how she was not welcomed with sufficient deference at the home of the powerful Disney executive Nina Jacobson. Ms. Jacobson is blasted for having taken her son to a birthday party instead of dedicating her Sunday to Night's precise timetable for script-reading. "What could Nina be doing that's more important than getting Night's new script?" Mr. Bamberger asks. (The italics are his.) Then the coup de grâce: Paula was offered "low-carb soup from the refrigerator." The implications are clear: it may have come from a can. The book describes Night's sustained petulance over this snubbing in terms that are, by any standards known on Planet Earth, astounding. So is Mr. Bamberger's ability to pipe-cleaner any anecdote until it twists into a lesson about Night. Night reminds himself of Bob Dylan — and Mr. Dylan's ability to affect a wide and diverse audience is very like Night's, according to the book. When the film's leading lady, Bryce Dallas Howard, is covered with welts after having been dragged across grass and twigs, Night is the injured party. "I can't have a reputation as a director who doesn't protect his actors," he is quoted as saying. There's a howler on every page for a while. But eventually there's also something real. If only because he had to finish this book so hurriedly (it has a final section dated April 18, 2006), Mr. Bamberger stops genuflecting long enough to capture a Wizard of Oz poignancy about his subject. This happens despite the fact that Night is "devastated" when not enough cast and crew members show up for his "Wizard of Oz" screening. "Beneath Night's zeal were great reserves of sadness and desperation," the book finally acknowledges. Its overall sense of the filmmaker's self-importance certainly jibes with that impression. There are glimpses of a childhood full of parental pressure, with an emphasis on whopping accomplishments. When Mr. Shyamalan appeared on the cover of Newsweek, his father told him that Time had a bigger circulation. His mother is an obstetrician who once removed a record-breaking 80-pound ovarian cyst. "No wonder Night was such a stat man," Mr. Bamberger says.

...if you don't want to. MNS certainly has his own style. And style is something very few directors have AT ALL these days. Don't get me wrong - I'm not going to defend his lesser work at all costs, but he is definetly his own man. History will be the judge, and I'm certain his work will be considered just as or more important than someone like James Cameron for example.

says it so well...

"Eventually the secret [...] is revealed. To call it an anticlimax would be an insult not only to climaxes but to prefixes. It's a crummy secret, about one step up the ladder of narrative originality from It Was All a Dream. It's so witless, in fact, that when we do discover the secret, we want to rewind the film so we don't know the secret anymore.

And then keep on rewinding, and rewinding, until we're back at the beginning, and can get up from our seats and walk backward out of the theater and go down the up escalator and watch the money spring from the cash register into our pockets."

While The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs were all about faith,--faith in one another, faith in one's self, and faith in something BIGGER than one's self--The Village and Lady in the Water are obviously protest songs.

And Ebert's review of The Village completely missed the mark. The movie is ABOUT deception. Everything's a lie, including the supernatural. Shyamalan himself has acknowledged that that's why the movie angered a lot of people. In my opinion, it makes it no less great than his other movies.

I guess that means I think Britney Spears is a musical genius.... (just to clarify, BadMrWonka, I don't actually)

Shyamalan himself may acknowledge that The Village being about lies and deception is what "angered" a lot of people, but that doesn't make it true. Personally, I didn't think it was about lies and deception so much as a ponderous vehicle for a high-concept gotcha cumbersomely shored up by art direction and whispery dialogue.

I also have difficulty imagining people being angered by the movie. It was fluff, and unlike some of Herr Shyamalan's other fluff, it wasn't all that entertaining.

When I saw The Village in the theater, I was admitted CHOKED. The slow, built-up tension was pitch perfect. It was seriously fucking scary when the creatures were approaching. Their design was original, eerie, and definitely memorable. Then, from out of nowhere, they were revealed as being fake. Now, as a monster-movie nut I was soooo fucking heartbroken. Fake? THEN, we get tricked AGAIN into thinking they were real (When Adrian Brody shows up in the woods in the outfit) and let down once more. The final twist was such a sucker punch I could only laugh. Shyamalan fucking schooled everyone on that movie, and yeah we can all agree it was pretty unsatisfying, but I gotta admit he did something risky and unconventional, and for that I respect the guy. Still, to this day I WISH those creatures were real. So I guess he wins either way.

I've read the book, so you don't need to take excerpts from it.

Taken out of context, those would make him sound like a douche. While I found the author of the book to be all too adoring of Night, I still think it portrayed him as human, eager-to-please, and insecure. A conceited, egomaniac, asshole however, I don't see... at least not any moreso than other directors.

Ummm, I can see how you might think the monsters in The Village were fake all along, but maybe you don't remember when the leader of the village (William Hurt) was talking to his daughter behind that house right before she was going to venture into the woods and he told her that in his old village (AKA the real world) there existed rumors of the creatures in history books. So, the way that I interpreted that was that it is possible that the monsters actually did exist but he just didn't know for certain. Or maybe he was just lying to his daughter about it but I've always thought that the possibility that there were real monsters in the woods was left up to the viewer to decide. Otherwise, wouldn't they have cut that piece of Hurt's dialogue to his daughter?
THIS POSTER/MOVIE IS CHRISTIAN PROPAGANDA
by TheDohDoh
Dec 7th, 2007
11:05:50 PM
This poster is clearly supposed to express a key visual of The Rapture, as is oft-illustrated/described in the Left Behind books that are always running over at every Wal-Mart in the nation. At “End-Times,” people will supposedly vanish without a trace leaving abandoned cars strewn along the highway. See this image, one of hundreds on the net depicting this event: http://www.reformation.org/lar ge-rapture1.jpg Shyamalan is a devout Christian in case you didn’t know. His first film was entitled Praying with Anger, his second, Wide Awake, was about a boy’s search for God and faith (mixed with the supernatural), and Signs is about the test of Christian faith, which is the reason Mel Gibson signed up to do it (he played a pastor) - that movie was a huge hit with the 700 Club and marketed to churches et al. There is even religious reference in Unbreakable (his best film IMO). Now, take what I just said, and reexamine this poster. It is clearly supposed to be a wink to Christians and modern Christian imagery, just like the recent Dark Knight poster is a wink to viral Internet fanboys, while eluding much of the public. The poster’s tagline mirrors that of so many Left Behind books, and even directly references the director’s most-Christian work to date. Also, notice the white light above the city - which is omnipresent in the Left Behind books. I did an entire research project in college on those books and their influence and popularity in American culture (no, I am not a fan nor am I paranoid). The Christian demographic is highly influential - just see The Golden Compass’s box office or the hush-hush that still surrounds The Passion’s $300 million take - so expect plenty of religious imagery in this film as well. This is a very sly way to get the non-secular part of the country at a fever for this film.
THAT ALSO EXPLAINS THE MYSTERY IN THE TITLE
by TheDohDoh
Dec 7th, 2007
11:09:48 PM
And yes, I know this film is Gaia-turned-on-us-and-kills-us , but that's just a disguise for Shyamalan's belief system. The title is almost covert or some shit. So, everyone get stoked, but the Left Behind series is coming to a theater new you starring an actor that is shades better than Kirk Cameron or Stephen Baldwin. Yes, indeed, Marky Mark is repenting for the almighty blockbuster!

Yeah, I think that the film had good atmosphere, it just ended up being disappointing. I had a decent enough time watching the film, but the progression of the film was to effectively diminish the mystery and wonder that the trailers and beginning of the movie had established. It just felt like a wasted opportunity. To me, anyway. I can see how some people might enjoy the film.

and you children are all so young.

All these refeences to some kids show I never saw just because the titles have one key word in common. ONE person mentions the Supremes hit of the same title, but no one mentions that that song was the theme song from a 1967 movie called "The Happening," a tragic pseudo-hip comedy in which some aging hippies kidnap a Mafia Don who comes to realize that none of his associates are going to pay his ransom.

I assumed when I saw the headline that this would be a remake. Then I looked at the poster and i guess it isn't, unless an entire tribe of hippies kidnap an entire caravan of mobsters. Which would be a really messed up idea for a movie.

If this is about peole flee from civilization when nature revolts, why are the cars pointed towards the dity? Is urban sprawl a santuraly FROM nature?

And if this a remake of The Rapture, fine, as long as mimi Rogers does another nude shower scene. Her nude scene in "A Door In The Floor" was great - gray bush is hot. Google for it.

I think Unbreakable is one of the best superhero movies ever made. Completely original. A wonderful nod to comic books and I think The Village is a damn interesing movie. Every time I watch it I see something new and the way he shoots the first scene when the monsters come into the village...it's downright SICK. That first glimpse of the monster...with Pheonix against the wall as the monster comes into the frame. Man...that's a GREAT moment, brilliantly done. There's a lot more going on in the movie, people put WAY too much emphasis on the "twist", and it IS lame. But I don't think the whole movie rests on the twists shoulders like The Sixth Sense did. I'm not saying it's a great movie, but damn it it has it's redeeming moments and isn't nearly as bad as people say. As for Lady In The Water. It wasn't a horror movie. It was a fairy tale for grown-ups...and not a very good one. But I get what he was trying to do, he just failed. But I'm still going to see whatever he does next. I think the guy is one of the more interesting directors working today.
UNBREAKABLE is actually one of my favourite movies.

It was the first DVD I ever purchased and is the only movie for which I own the soundtrack. I really love that movie. It's a better attempt at placing the superhero genre in a realistic setting than any episode of HEROES. Both of the leads are fantastic in that movie and there are some really beautiful ideas going on.

I love the way that Willis' coat becomes more like a costume as the movie progresses (Night explains in the commentary that there were several different versions of the coat worn throughout the movie so that it subtley gets longer and longer like a cape).

The reveal about what happened in the car crash is beautifully done; as is the great scene where Willis is reborn after facing his fear of drowning.

I hope that this is a return to the greatness of UNBREAKABLE for Mr. S as his last efforts which certainly weren't bad but could have been far better. I personally think that he is one of the best directors in Hollywood at the moment, even if his scripts don't always match up with his skills behind the camera.

Signs is a great movie. I remember Seeing the sixth sense for the first time in the cinema and thinking wow that was one of the best I had seen that year and I was really looking forward to seeing what M night did next. Unbreakble. Was a bit too long but that opening scene of the camera flitting between Willis and female passenger and Willis's movie son watching the tv on the bed from an upside down camera angle, blew my fucking mind. I had been going to the cinema since way back. And i had never seen anything like those camera angles used in a film before. Signs. Has the best damn alien invasion ever in sci fi film. Through the fucking televsion. and the way night plays with you during the movie. at first we all think its a stunt. but then when the girl comes in and says there is a monster in my can i have a glass of water. You know its for real, like when the family wakes up and discovers the burnt coalfields, the camera pulls up you see how massive the signs are and they are all pointing to Mel's cornfield. But we know its a worldwide invasion. Look at Joaquim reaction when the real life alien is caught on camera strolling down the street in Mexico. The village is great up untill the end of the movie. But it still a great looking movie. the point of the movie is that grief does strange things to people and when william Hurt gets his inheritance he ploughs into a local theatre group he founded and uses the rest Buy an enormous sway of land to protect himself, his friends and his family. When they all entered his world, they couldnt leave and he didnt allow them to leave and for the kids he had the adults put on a story about monsters. That was his way of saying that there are dangers out there in the real world. you be will safe in this world. I havent seen lady in the water. But from what i gather it seems to be out negative criticism. Which night doesnt like.

I did have the misfortune of seeing "The Village", as well as that ultraoverrated plagiaristic pulp named "The Sixth Sense". Still, I'm surprised - if one "cleverly" puts the title of one's tepid movie on the poster of the next, why not go all the way and cram them all in? I have no idea of the plot, but here's a suggestion: "The Happening: We've seen the signs! A paranoid thriller telling the story of the village from which people vanished, leaving only one asleep driver behind the weel of his delivery truck, and one lady in the water of a nearby beach. The duo, guided by their sixth sense, soon meet and encounter a third survivor, Stuart. Little do they realize that they will soon embark on a journey that will take them to the ends of human limitations and show if their will is unbreakable..." - this took 47 seconds, while half-asleep; couldn't Shyamalama spare that much time? Oh, but then again, I keep forgetting that he's un artiste extraordinaire, gravely serious and mocked by the primitive philistines...

M. Night has said numerous times that he did NOT approve of the marketing for The Village, which is why a lot of people went into the theatre to see it and expected a horror movie, because it was marketed as a Horror movie by the production company's marketing team. M. Night disapproved of their marketing and he got in a huge argument over it but in the end the studio had the final say and so they chose to market it like The Sixth Sense, a horror movie, instead of more of a mystery movie. He blames the marketing for the majority of peoples' disdain of the film.

Because twist, would mean a suprise that nobody saw coming. Night endings are more like explantions. Nights problem is that he appears to be full of himself to the point he cant accept criticism from anyone or tolerate a shift in control Bruce willis is not a man to feck about with on set and one imagines he had really hard time on the sixth sense and unbreakable. Usually if an actor like bruce doesnt like the script he demands changes. As i said night wont tolerate others usurping his control and that also aplies to studio execs. They didnt understand Lady so he told them all to fuck and in a very public manner. Hollywood works in group system and the dont like individuals they cant control. night hates working with groups of people. he hates to be controlled and wont allow anyone to do, lest it harm his creativity.

I can't decide whether it's funny or very, very sad when I read some of the excuses being made for The Village.

I loved Unbreakable (yes, it gets better with each viewing), liked Sixth Sense a lot and don't mind Signs at all since I'm in the it's-not-an-invasion-movie-per -se contingent.

However.

The Village is absolutely ghastly. I couldn't believe what I was watching when I saw it. It's like a parody skit of a Shyamalan film that won't end. People who say they were surprised by anything in the narrative of that film are drooling, mouth-breathing idiots who let flies walk on their faces when they watch movies. There is no marketing approach in the world that could have saved that howling shitburger.

What makes The Village even more insulting is the shameless participation of high-profile actors who MUST have known how awful the script was but were desperate to be seen in the work of a flavor-of-the-month director.

I won't say anything about Lady in the Water since I haven't been able to get past the opening five minutes without heartburn.

This script was so poorly written

I don't mean "It's a stupid idea," I mean it's written on an amateur level. The relationships are sub-soap opera, the dialogue is expository to the point of self-parody and the story structure (he's no Mel Gibson) is beyond hack. If this same script were written by a first timer, it would have been shitcanned within 10 pages. A horrible, horrible read. I'm not a Night hater. I just hate bad scripts. This is a bad, bad script.

US Intelligence has determined that Iran is no threat to develop weapons; there will be no invasion of Iran anytime soon.

Of course, we're still waiting for the students to rise up in revolt against the old dudes running the country. Although, of course, they could just die of old age and the students/young take over.

These neocons feckheads dont really care if there are no nukes or not. I can see a situation where long term plans will be drawn up and hopefully longfingered to the point where they never happpen. Cheney and company want to get their hands on the billions of oil in the region and they see Iran standing in thier way. Cheney and company doesnt give a shit what the report says. I normally would never wish death on anyone but I hope for the sake of the US and world security, that cheney pop his clogs and really soon. He and his group are actually the real threat in the world right now and the endtimers too.

Europe will have to Terrorism one day and when that fight is over, the EU will look to america, which will put into plan the final phase of its plan for World domination.

There won't be an invasion of Iran. Setting aside the question of motive, Iran is way too big and well armed for the US to try it. Tactical bombing strikes might be in the offing, but probably not. Bush never was a man of great ambition, and he's now more focused on how once he resigns he thinks he will be able to make a bucket of money on the lecture circuit.

Anyway, for better or for worse, the Iraq war has neutralized the US's ability to do anything large-scale militarily for a long time to come. The Bush really isn't evil so much as it is a failure.

And, by the way, to all you people that are wondering why he is perceived as such a dick- May I refer you to That 70s Venom post at 01:38:58. The very fact that he can't accept that the village had flaws and blames it on the marketing shows him as a scapegoat finding dickhead.

For the record- I was travelling and doing too many drugs at the time so actually missed all the marketing for the village. I saw it on the flight home and FUCKING HATED it.

About M. Night
by JaPra
Dec 10th, 2007
09:22:40 AM
It's not that people are down on M. Night's films, if anything, the reaction of late is directly related to Night himself. He's been overtaken by his mega sized ego which has infected negatively his art of late.

I am not completely enthusiastic about this new film. I am intrigued, but Lady in the Water was so convoluted and quite full of itself that it's left me dry in terms of wanting to see another Shyalaman film any time soon.

Here's hoping.

Basic Plot is a Big Rip Off (Spoilers)
by Steve Trevor
Dec 10th, 2007
11:39:13 AM
The basic plot is very similar to a 2005 Japanese film by Shinji Aoyama called "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" The basic plot is that in 2015 a disease called the Lemming Syndrome causes mass suicides. It is also related to the environment. I doubt the treatment of the plot, however, is the same. In this version two Japanese noise rockers discover that their music provides a cure for the disease. Somehow, I doubt that will be what Wahlberg discovers.
