... in that, whether or not you think it looks good, it pretty much fits right in with the product you originally remember. The difference, though, is that the Chipmunks movie looks terrible to me, but it looks terrible in the same ways I remember the cartoon being terrible, whereas Speed Racer looks cracktastic in exactly the ways I remember it being. Take note, Michael Bay; if you are going to rape somebody's childhood, THIS is the way to do it.

It's too dumb for most adults to dig it, and it's too hectic to being kids to. 12 year old boys and anime geeks will cream their pants, everyone else will go see Iron Man instead.

by Ribbons
Dec 6th, 2007
10:14:47 PM
...but those car race scenes were just fugly. It's not even that it looks "fake" (which I'm sure the movie's proponents will insist is the idea), but that the vehicles and the environments aren't convincingly rendered.

Seriously, it looks very very bad. There was one shot where a yellow car is spinning around in the air where I seriously thought I was looking at an in-game video game shot. And that's not a compliment. My hopes for this movie are dashed.

Look at the Matrix movies. One of the things that series had going for it were tight special effects minus the Burly Brawl. This movie looks like anime brought to the big screen and I'm loving it. Who says CGI has to be realistic to be cool? The only thing cooler would have been if this were filmed in 3D. Holy crap! Ticket sold!

It should have been motion capture, imo...it just looks really divided to me. It looks really...*groan* really amateur. The Wachowski's are some of those filmakers who believe that Rodriguez is the revolutionary he and Harry claim he is. The only working director who knows what he's doing with this technology is Zach Snyder. This film just looks cheap.

Bad acting??? Cheesy??? Cartoony CGI??? No fucking shit!!! What next? Are they gonna hate Batman movies because there's a guy in them that dresses like a bat?Honestly there was some douche in the last talkback saying he'd prefer watching real racecars go around a real track with CGI thrown in... Sounds real exciting! Are these the same people coplaining that Hollywood won't try new things in teh same breath? Ironic I know... given that this is an adaptation of something so dated and cheesy this could only be a massive improvement... You know what? Stay home and watch realistic Nascar or play Project Gotham Racing, I'll have my seat reserved for this on IMAX and a copy on Blu-Ray just to piss off the HD-DVD crowd.

Did all of you people who are complaining about how it doesn't look real complain that Beowulf or Sin City didn't look real? Did you whine about the washed out colors in Minority Report or the use of tint in Traffic or Matrix? It's called STYLIZATION. The W. Bros (sisters) can pull off real when they want to. Obviously, this isn't meant to look real. It's based on a cartoon! Personally, I'd like to see more directors experimenting with style like this.

It seems rather odd if it's supposed to be a family movie. Anyway, wasn't it said that the Bro. Wachowski's were using special cameras for this. Something about everything being in focus like a cartoon? I think Susan Sarandon said something about that. The reason I brought it up is because I didn't see that anywhere in the trailer. By the way, you can easily see that those actors are in front of a blue/green screen in some scenes.

I really am, but I cannot find one frame of this trailer that looks interesting or innovative. Whatever the Wachowski's were supposedly doing that was so amazing doesn't seem to be working, in fact I think the look makes the movie seem cheap and low budget. There are so many bad "family" films that this reminds me of. I think for anyone that watched that trailer Thunderbirds immediately comes to mind. The racing reminds me of the God aweful pos-race from episode 1, and if I'm supposed to sit through and hour of pod-racing you can forget it. I'll save my money for the Shitty alvin and the Chipmunks movie, at least it has the Voice talent form the 80's who also happens to be the son of the original Dave Seville.

C'mon. The W.Bros are obsessed with that TV Show. Look how faithful they are to the characters. Emil even frown when he's racing in the exact same way. Go watch Ghostface Killah's "Daytona 500" video on YouTube if you've forgotten what Speed Racer looks like. The dialogue is just like the show...on purpose. Characters always had weird speech patterns due to the dubbing and weird speeches due to the crazy Japanese fuckers who created it. SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEED RACCCCCCCCCCCER. HE'S A HERO ON WHEELS. Alvin and the Chipmunks looks like ass, but, in its defense, it looks like the same kind of ass as the original cartoon, which I have always hated. So, yes, comparing this to AatC is absolutely fair. I feel like, if AatC had been airing continuously for all this time, the current episodes would probably be exactly like this new movie. I have to give it to the Wachowskis; it takes serious nards to not only faithfully reproduce what was awesome about Speed Racer, but also what was terrible about it. It's a love letter to a childhood memory that is shared by a lot of people. I think it will be very entertaining, and people that hated the show will hate the movie for the same reasons. Thus, it has done its job.

It's great to see John Goodman back and givin' 'er once again. This dude is perfect for the role and I can't get his hair out of my mind. When's the last time that happened (last night, doh). Another great thing on the rolling technicolor scroll of Speed Racer greatness is that I am just as siked to see these people stand still in this crazy world as I am to see Speed actually race. The karate scenes need some touching up, but I am positive that the studio will have this all touched up to perfection like a shiny crack rock by May as well as have a lot of shit done in 3D. Whoever greenlit this, must have the same feeling Rothman had at Fox when he saw the dallies for Speed 2. Emile Hirsch looks like he has been miscast. He's trying to play edgy and looks like an emo trying to be mature. The only part that looked good was Matthew Fox as Racer X. From the ONE line he gave, he looks like he nailed it.

Everyone else...look yeah it resembles the cartoon, but to make movie, it has to be grounded in some sort of reality, and tis looks like "Josie and the Pussycats".

The problem with cheap-lloking CGI & "making it look like anime"
by kevred
Dec 7th, 2007
01:21:18 AM
Now, I don't want to judge this too much since it's just a snippet of the movie, so I'm not claiming to know any more than I do.

But the problem with explaining away day-glo CG by saying that it looks like the source material is this: animated stuff, be it cheapo Speed Racer or high-end anime, is always consistent *with itself*. The characters, machines, and settings are all rendered basically the same way, and are all 2-D artistic representations that blend together pretty well.

But in live action, no matter how brightly you dress actors, they're still plain old human beings. Put a human up against a wacked-out, cartoonish CG background, and there's a jarring contrast, like some kind of TV commercial or Disney Channel show's opening credits. Which may be an intended effect, but it looks damned cheap and scuttles a sense of being in some kind of real world, however surreal.

Here's hoping the filmmakers aren't so caught up in their vision that they don't realize the need to integrate all the visual elements of the movie, no matter how cartoonish the setting.

SORRY ROBERT RODRIGUEZ / FUTURE OF FILM
by TheDohDoh
Dec 7th, 2007
01:40:33 AM
I know Robert Rodriguez was dying to do the Jetsons in a similar fashion, but the WBros have slam-bammed you to the punch. As for the haters, I went and saw Beowulf a couple weeks ago in IMAX/3d and it was one of the funnest times I've had at the movies in years mates. I'll stay home and watch the criterion of "Ace in the Hole" for sure - I love great films - but it's getting harder and harder to make a theater worthwhile. Speedracer is built to make us a communal audience once again and it looks like magic, seriously. I can already imagine this in an IMAX, and it's going to feel like we are all plugged into electrical outlets in our seats, especially if they give out 3D glasses (undetermined as of yet, but given how good Beowulf is doing in 3D, I wouldn't rule it out). To me, this feels like the future. Just a total head rush of imagination - this is what I imagine James Cameron doing with Avatar, but more specifically, with Battle Angel Alita. We don't have flying cars and we don't have hovercrafts, but I want my goddamn futuristic action movies, and if they're rated G, so be it. That's really cool actually. It gets all of us on the same page of the future again, and with the internet, our society is totally fucked up. It's about time America had a little mainstream taste of the Japanese ultra-sensory experience that anime provides but so many of us can't KY-jelly ourselves to watch. Speedracer makes Pixar look dated, and not to knock on Pixar, but it's about time we stepped it up again and stunned ourselves. I remember seeing Toy Story I in the theater and my fucking jaw dropped. Beowulf was great b/c I could see it with my college buddies and the movie had such crazy anti-religious, pro-nakedness sentiments that it was like an inside joke. But Speedracer is something special. These guys are trying to submerse their audience into a world we can't imagine, and I don't mean like Enchanted did (doh). 300 was cool and everything, and Sin City fucking rocked, but Speedracer is the start of where anything can be done. It's the start of a new type of hyper-fantasy film that Peter Jackson hasn't touched. It's great that the WBros picked a world like Speedracer's - which is a goofy, hard-to-pin world of action, delight, cheese and grease. They are warming up. The true test for future films like this will be how far can the human imagination take us? Video games are definitely a step ahead and George Lucas knows this - unfortunately Lucas is so damn out of touch with humanity that he creats a fantasy world with the satisfaction of a nazi. Let's sit back and watch Speedracer, b/c Batman will be right after it. Anybody who is not curious about this movie is too desensitized to imagine it.

Well, some people just have no joy in their hearts, and aren't happy unless they are miserable. Put me in the "must be faithful to the SPIRIT of the original, rather than the letter" camp. That having been said, I really like it when a director attempts to accurately reproduce the original as closely as possible in a movie. I like it, but I don't think it's a requirement. A big part of the reason that Frank Miller stories work so well as movies is because the man thinks in storyboards. All of his own stuff has panels that are composed using the rules of various film genres, and you get the feeling that the images in his head are already a movie. How close you should be willing to follow it really depends on the material being adapted. Something like Sandman, the meticulous adaptation is not a requirement, because, as good as the writing is, it's the broad strokes of the story that make it so great. The details are icing. Also, there is no definitive look for the characters, due to all the different artists. But, when you are going for a property like Speed Racer, where you are basically banking on the power of nostalgia, I find meticulously recreation of the original feel to be a bold and respectable choice. I agree with you that people are going to bitch no matter what happens, but I am not one of those people. I freaking loved Sin City and 300.

There's plenty of shallow focus in the trailer. And it even racks focus in places. So, all of that talk about everything being in focus, all of the time, was a complete and utter crock. I'm not surprised. Apart from the overtly stylised race sequences, where the lack of shallow focus simply makes them look even more fake than they would otherwise. A jarring style between the CG and the filmed elements - this looks, frankly, utterly disgusting. It looks mindblowing. Yeah, it looks "unreal" and in no way grounded in reality. No shit Sherlock.

Bag on the Matrix for unreal backgrounds or effects, if that is your beef, since it's set in a semi-real world. But, Speed Racer has anime backgrounds and effects, so it's retarded to whine about it being "unreal". Whine about it not being anime enough or good anime, but don't be so stupid as to whine about it being "unreal".

Predictions of a bomb are so laughable. Even if everyone on AICN hated it (and most DON'T), this PG flick will do giant business with families and kids.

What kind of moron is so arrogant and stupid enough to think that just because he personally hates a movie, it'll bomb? I hate every chick flick ever made and most of the rom-coms, but I also know when a well made, and marketed, one will hit it's target market, and do big bank. Hateration from a few geeks never stopped any of them, and won't stop Speed Racer.

...I mean it seems the moviegoing community is already heavily split on it. Some will like it because it does look really fucking cool. Some will likely hate it because it also does look really fucking stupid. The dialogue and hammy characterization is going to turn a lot of people off, but then there are those who just want to see some really cool "flash" on the screen with as much noise and sound as the theatre's speakers can put out.

I may end up hating the movie, myself, but I have to say I am intrigued. I'd at least like to see it in the theatre. And if it IS released in 3D Imax, I'm sold already.

i'm surprised they didnt create a CGI monkey, though they likely will use a CGI double for some "cool animetastic scenes". as for the movie itself, i never watched the cartoon and the little i've seen of it makes me wonder why its regarded in the way it is. and while the movie does look like eye candy, i can wait til its free on tv. i dont know if its gonna shatter expectations monetary wise like Transformers did but i wouldnt be surprised if this made a good chunk of cash. but at the same time, wouldnt be surprised if it failed.

Yeah, I wonder about that, honestly. I wish I could give myself over to something like this. I really do. I loved Speed Racer as a kid. But I'm older now, and I guess I can't break the frame and crawl inside something like this, I can't get past the cynicism of the way something like this is being sold to me. I guess this happened with _The Phantom Menace_. I walked out, desperately trying to convince myself it was good. But it wasn't, it just wasn't, and once I realized that the movie and the moviemakers were sort of RELYING on me to convince myself it was good when it wasn't? That they had confidence they could offer any sort of pap as long as it looked big and expensive because they knew I'd hypnotize myself into liking it because I had walked in wanting so much to like it? My whole outlook died. I guess my soul died. Or I woke up and started looking for quality.

I had high hopes, but this looks like Spy Kids. Decide whether you want it to look realistic or like a cartoon. Using a blend just doesn't work (compare Altman's gritty-yet-effective Popeye versus Scooby Doo or Fat Albert); If they look like real people wearing cartoon clothing then something just doesn't add up. And what is with this serious acting from Sarandon and Goodman? Speed Racer was never a family drama. And where's the theme song?!

That being said - the trailer for "Speed Racer" still managed to baffle me. I can't remember ever having seen a preview that so utterly and completely put me off a movie. With as many movies that Harry has seen, which I'm sure includes (at least) some knowledge of today's modern effects, I have no idea why he had the reaction that he did. I'm not calling you out on this one, Harry. It's not like that. But if I'm going to be blown away just as you were, it's going to require a bit more unique movie magic than that. Take Batman, for example. If a Batman movie (20 minute segment or whatever) was realized based "closely" on the visual contributions of comic book artist Simon Bisley (which...with today's effects, could easily be done), that could be something that would push visual/special/computer effects. Placing an actor's head on a body builder over the coarse of a movie and making that convincing within that superhero fantasy, with computer exaggeration as much as necessary (cape, etc.),...now THAT would be something to be REALLY impressed about. As long as it looked FREAKIN' COOL, as it should.
However, if there's good word of mouth, I'll go.

Realism is a stylistic choice, and not one everybody makes. If they were trying for realistic, they failed miserably, but they've said the opposite, that they were going for something stylized, different. Will everybody like it? Not necessarily. But nobody likes everything. God knows, some talkbackers would call CGI crappy if it were rendered picture perfect, just because they're so "too cool for school" that they can't accept anything that isn't 100 percent photoreal or which couldn't be real. The truth is, everything you see on film is fake. People spend hundreds of millions of dollars pretending, and no storyteller can resolve a hundred percent of what would convince everybody. And that isn't even the point. The point is to tell a story in an interesting way that an audience will appreciate. Whether the Wachowski brothers have pulled this off remains to be seen. What I find incredibly tiresome are all the talkbackers here who, months out from actually seeing the finished product have decided it's going to be terrible. My God what a joyless bunch of fools. If you really love movies and aren't just some jaded niche audience member, you'll come to understand something important: not every movie says the same thing, in the same way, with the same style, in a way meant to flatter your tastes. Relax. Stop expecting the world to spin on an axis of your narrow interests. Enjoy the movies for what they are.

The dialogue seemed a bit corny, but then again the cartoon was like this as well, so I'm not complaining there. Why do we feel the need to make everything realistic? I live in the real world every day...it's not that interesting really. When I go to see a comic book or cartoon based movie, I want to be in that world for a few hours, no matter how 'silly' it looks as opposed to the dull greys and browns and gravity of our real world. Give me a superhero movie in that style and I'm sold. What is so great about realism and not looking silly in a movie like that? Answer me on that one.

Feels like they've really captured the intensity of modern anime in a live action feature. Looks pretty camp but in a good way, this should be a tad cheesy much like it's progenitor of the 60s. Could be serious fun in IMAX. I personally dig the Washowski's (fetishism and pseudo-intellectual posturing aside) they're geeks and true visionaries, I've enjoyed all their work to date (even V) and I loved Speed Racer as a kid, for the sheer nostalgia factor combined with such garish and dynamic visuals, I'm deffo there.

Especially an effing Speed Racer movie. I thought it looked perfect. "Realism" has it's place in production design, yes, but NOT IN A SPEED RACER MOVIE. Bring the color, Wachowski Brothers.

I don't know how they can market this thing, I guess to kids who love anime? Matthew Fox was the only cool part of the trailer, Emelie Hirsh or whatever his name is just sounded like the super stereotypical determined kid with his greasy haircut with the convenient curl and the line something about how all he knows how to do is race, so he's gotta do it! I don't know if the public is ready for something so retro quite yet. The W bros might be ahead of their time, or just altogether insane.

I really want the Wachowski's to win back the confidence they lost with the Matrix sequels, but it looks like the same lifeless too-much-CGI wasteland that we've seen so many times before. There are two films that I think did the CGI world right, that's Sky Captains (which gets a bad rap) and Sin City. 300, the Star Wars prequels, the Spy Kids movies, and the Matrix prequels were all hurt by the overuse of CGI. You need some real justification to create a world from a computer and I'm not sure Speed Racer has it. Love the cast but I hate the look (so far).

Don't be a jackass. If you saw the exact same trailer, only the title card said 'Torque 2' at the end instead of 'Speed Racer,' you probably wouldn't be able to shut up about how awful it looked. Stow the faux "I pity you" crap; as if anyone who doesn't like a montage of CGI cars is a dysfunctional moviegoer. Believe it or not, we all have interests that we look to have reflected back at us when we go to the theater, even if those interests differ, which is why you probably decided you liked this trailer before you even saw it. Should I "pity" you Speed freaks for working yourselves into a 6-month long, frenzied anticipation for a big, dumb movie with ugly f/x?

...Those polar bears in Golden Compass are comparable to Sci-Fi Channel stuff. It's what you do with the fakeness that counts. The Warchowskis are creating a live action, mid-1960's anime. Looks like they succeeded. Of course whether anyone will "get it" is the question that remains to be answered.

From the stills I did not know what to think, but in motion it works for me. I had no interest, now I at least am intrigued. Could suck, but hey, one of the only times I actually thought to myself "Hey, they actually seem to get the show". Not a re-imagining, not trying to make it more real, not trying to camp it up or spoof it. Just try to actually translate a quirky 60's anime to the big screen in live action (at least the actors). Characters seem in form, action and story seems like it could have been an episode of the series.

That said, what works in a few minutes of trailer may not hold up a full movie, but at least it looks like they 'could' make it work.

How many more stupid reasons can you come up with before we can actually get a chance to watch this thing and decide if it holds up?

And ArcadianDS, awww, did I hit a nerve there? Any particular parts troubling you? I'll help you out with one, you see the 'bad guys' in the matrix are robots! Hope that cleared up a lot for you!

Anyway this is basically Grindhouse all over again... If you know grindhouse films and what Tarantino and all were aiming for, you'd get that movie... and if you know what Speed Racer is and what the Wachowskis are trying to do, you'd get this movie. If you weren't ever into it in the first place, then it doesn't appeal to you... But just because you're not onboard doesn't make it shitty filmmaking! Learn to differentiate between your taste and good films that don't suit your taste! That said so far there's zip to complain about, how about we watch the freaking movie first to see if it delivers what it promises? And maybe the trailer isn't that delivering on how over the top these race scenes are, hell maybe the trailer's not trying to show you the best stuff till your ass is in the theatre, and that's totally a good thing to me!

but I can't stop watching this thing. I love it. It's so deliciously like the show of Speed Racer in its completely unabashed seriousness, and the shots they show really do seem anime-styled. I especially like Speed's scrunched up "angry driving face", which looks more like the show than I could have imagined. It's ridiculousness taking itself seriously, which is pretty much the definition of Speed Racer. At least to me. Like I said, maybe there's something in the swirls, I realize I'm in the minority here. Actually, it also kind of reminds me of The Great Race, which is a favorite. It can't be that good, but it looks fun.

Regarding the Speed Racer Trailer: Was the acting worse than Attack of the Clones? -Yes, the acting in AOTC was stylistic, keeping with the 1940 sci-fi serials. Was it any less realistic looking than Sky Captain? -I don't want to think about that film. It was too fuzzy looking to concentrate on. Do you really want a gritty, shaky cam, Michael Mann version of Speed Racer? -NO! However, I do want there to be some semblance of reality, such as non-corkscrew roads. Could it possibly be less intelligent than Transformers? -I'm sure it'll be on par with that film. Make of that what you will. Do you think the effects work or post-production work is anywhere near done in that trailer? -I wouldn't dare release non-finished versions of shots in a trailer. However, I know they did that in the Hulk one. Do you really, honestly, care that much about Speed Racer that you will be devastated if they don't "get it right" (i.e. SRINO! SRINO! SRINO!!!!)? -Haha! I'm not too invested in the property. However if they used the King Missile song as a montage somewhere in the film I'd die from laughter and immediately love the film. Have you ever seen anything like that before? -Yes. In Spy Kids. All three of them. Seriously people, chill the fuck out. -Word.

There's some truly bad CGI in there (and, yes, BAD FOR A CARTOON STYLE; I'm not saying it should be photorealistic) but there's also some stuff that shows real promise. There may be Speed Racers fan in the US but right here in Europe this is a completely unknown franchise (at least off the island of the euro haters) which is going to be judged only by its effects and child appeal... and at this point it's certainly one of the worst thing I've seen in years. Thunderbirds material to my eyes.
If nothing else it's different.

This will brutally divide audiences, as we're already seeing. There aren't going to be many people on the fence about it. I think the people who absolutely loathed BAYFORMERS (full disclosure: I think that movie sucks ass) will find more to like here. I think that people who for whatever reason enjoyed BAYFORMERS will find SPEED RACER to be downright unpleasant. Two entirely different approaches to adapting an animated TV show to live action or some approximation thereof. One takes the implausible animated show into what is identifiably "the real world". The other takes a few elements of "the real world" into the entirely implausible environment of the TV cartoon. There are other striking differences, most notably of sincerity. Nobody making TRANSFORMERS cared anything about TRANSFORMERS. They didn't even bother to pretend to care, for the most part. SPEED RACER, on the other hand, was clearly made by people who were fans of SPEED RACER. Make of that what you will.

Dude...Okay, some things were and will be gay forever...Neckerchiefs are gay. The case on this matter has been closed since the Fred vs. Gayness case of '81.

And...I will see this in the theater. In IMAX if they do it, and I will be shrooming my balls all the way off, because that is what this shit is good for. Fast cars, a monkey...a fat kid with candy...Christina Ricci who now looks a little too skinny...I liked her in that movie where her boobs were really good...Buffalo 66. I think...Yeah. THIS IS GREAT TRIP-FODDER. And, maybe, just maybe...A kid will have a seizure in the audience while we're watching it! Speed's hair is really gay.

...the only guy who really SOUNDS right is the baddie going "SIGN that contract...you won't even FINISH the RACE!" Hell, EVERYONE in the cartoon talked like that; as if they were given like five seconds to get out a whole paragraph's worth of dialogue--and every other WORD was STRESSED, as well as punctuated with various "ah!"s and "oh!"s. Hirsch and Goodman look especially dead-on, but both of 'em have to work on the proper "voice"...as far as Trixie goes, well, Ricci has the anime-shaped eyes and head for sure; but Trixie was supposed to be kinda long and lanky, wasn't she? Mary Elizabeth Whastername looks more like Trixie to me--anyway, will I be there opening day? You bet. Just please, PUHLEEZE don't redo the theme song as some stupid rap abomination featuring Beyonce and a bazillion guest "artists"...

Holding, holding HOLDING...and release.

I am not jealous of that, baybuh! I loves ya man, but damn, get those manhandles off yer neck!

Heh. Basically, I will see this crazy shit movie...because the Wachowski brothers...like Judd Apatow have the most awesome last name in the world.

Projectile vomit hitting a bathroom door sounds like: WA-CHOWSKI! And when someone gets an ugly as homemade sin beating with jeet kun do, the guy says APATOW! Man, that and the dude from V for Vendetta get my money...and the speedlines, that was also kind of boss. But what sells the micturating one, is a fat kid eating candy with a monkey. I want more of the damned theme song than the awesome horn section...What they should do is have Yohko Kanno and Tank! redo that theme. Hells YEAH!

I just think that Speed Racer looks better in his driving suit than his fucking high-waisted neckerchief bouffant outfit. I said it before, that hair is genetically designed to make you want to punch Speed Racer in the face. That's why you mostly see shirts and posters with him with his helmet on, to protect him from all the face-punchers.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye, Neckerchiefs are for Weeblos, Boy Scouts, Scout Masters, and Big Gay Al, and even Fred from Scooby Doo...bleah! Jonny Quest has a black turtleneck, that kicks ass and balls, with a VERY wide foot. Very wide.

Everything from the sets to the costumes to the cars. Right out of the show. Even the weapons I saw were those "greasegun" style 60's submachine gun used on the show. Racer X costume is now black ala Diabolik, but that's the only real change I noticed. Many shots were taken straight from the show (Pops Racer wearing a Lei at the island race). Too artsy for some of the kids on this site? Probably, most of you bitching wouldn't see this regardless of what the trailer looked like. It looks brilliant to me, right down to his white boots.

But like I said in some sick and twisted way, I'm kinda getting a warm fuzzy feeling about this movie; kinda like prom night but with a guaranteed of getting something! Racer X (Matthew Fox) is Speed Racer's lost lost brother (thought to be dead). The last shot with the Shooting Star (Racer X's car) on jacks with Fox on th right side of the screen is so anime it's sick. Anyone betting that this will bomb is clueless. The Wachowskis are behind it! Love or hate the Matrix Trilogy, they each had some amazing action sequences and unique visual style. I will guess that if this movie isn't a mega blockbuster (which it will be), it will at least become a cult phenomenom (ala Nightmare Before Christmas).

"Not enough people the world over give a rats ass about Speed Racer or know even what the frick it is"....I disagree. Speed Racer has been shown in reruns since the early 70's (4 years ago it was being shown on the Speed cable network). Even Mtv ran it for a while back in the 90's It's a HUGE property in Japan and anyone over the age of 25 knows who Speed Racer is. The Wachowski's didn't direct Scooby Doo. Joel Silver didn't produced Scooby Doo or the Thunderbirds. These guys don't turn out flops. Love or hate the Matrix Trilogy, each movie made over 200 million.

The bad? Not much plot given, and what was seems very very simple and poorly written.....Then again it IS "speed racer"..which was sure as fuck never on the level of Gotcha man or Voltes 5 in the plot department.

It's a 2 part show on volume 3 of the Speed Racer DVD's and one of the best. There are ninja-type killers in that episode killing and kidnapping diplomats and Racer X is forced to infiltrate, then dispatch a bunch of them. Speed Racer was the first cartoon to have a HUGE body count in many shows. In "The Assassins", around 25 people are killed by explosions and machine-gun fire (including blood spray in one scene). Not bad for a late 60's toon. Try that shit with an animated show now.

Did you like the last 2 Matrix films or something? They universally stunk out. But if it floats your boat, what the hell. You can sell shit to some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all the time. This is why film makers like the Wachowski brothers keep getting away with it. Did I say brothers then? The trailer for Scooby Doo didn't have car chases, ninjas doing spinning kicks and guys with machine guns spraying rooms....but I could care less if it makes 5 bucks, as long as I enjoy it (and my son). You tell me the martial arts scenes didn't look cool. Mark my words right now and remember them in 5 months...Racer X will be one of the coolest characters in film history.
Have you ever seen Speed Racer...ON WEED???

Well, all these Scenes with the Cage-Track(s) are reminding me extremely on F-Zero GX on the GameCube. Well, unfortunately for F-Zero, a Movie-translation of F-Zero would actually look nearly the same, but with Hovercrafts&Aliens on the raceways(wich might be hovering too in F-Zero.)
