Note in particular the 'Ultimate Nick Fury' version of the character.

However what's awesome is not (or not just) the inclusion of the character in these films, but what it implies: specifically that the films take place in the same shared universe and the possibility exists for a film to be made based on the Avengers, a team formed (classically) of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk, and slight more obscure characters like Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Marvel can only do so much
by Jor-El23

since their characters are the property of several studios. WB has it made but they've yet to capitalize on it. there seem to be way too many restrictions about what you can do with WB characters.
Sorry, to clarify:
by raw_bean
Dec 4th, 2007
07:41:48 AM
The Avengers film is not just a possibility, but is on Marvel's slate of upcoming films. The exciting bit is the possibility that the characters in it will be played by the same actors as in their own respective films, and in the same continuity. An Avengers film with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Ed Norton as the Hulk is an exciting prospect! :^)

If they take all the stars of the single movies and try to put them together, it would be far too expensive to make. So unless its Downey Jr, Norton, MAYBE whomever plays Cap'n Crunch....er, America, and then all unknowns or b-listers, then I don't see it happening.

Big star ensembles just dont happen much anymore, thanks to skyrocketing salaries. Something like the Ocean's movies only works because the actors agree to work for a fraction of their salaries. I dont see them doing that for a comic blockbuster.

You all probably commented this to death when it first broke that Jackson was Nick Fury, but I need to get this out. WTF?! Is it so hard to find a white, middle-aged, physically fit actor and throw an eye patch on him? I'm all for alternative casting, and a black Kingpin was fine by me, but if you're going to cast against the traditional type for well-known characters, at what point do you start to alienate the fan base?

For some reason this has to get mentioned 18 times in every Sam Jackson/Nick Fury article, but they're going with Ultimate Nick Fury, a version of the character from a different universe than the one you're used to. Which is fine, since the movies are, in fanboy terms, technically a different universe from anything in the comics anyway.

Assuming of course that both Hulk and Iron Man are good movies and successful enough for a Suit to have the balls to ok the budget for an Avengers movie and they manage to get the right creative team to put the whole thing together. The Iron man vs. Hulk run by Bob Layton and Dave Micheline in the early 80's of Iron Man was one of the coolest showdowns in marvel history. When Tony channels all his suits power into his fist for a uber knockout punch he lays the Hulk out cold. Something no other Marvel character can claim. Cap showing up would be quite cool as well. And please no fucking retarded Wolverine cameo. The idea that Wolverine could last two minutes with the Hulk in comics is laughable enough. Don't need to see the hollywood Calvin Klein pretty version of Wolverine showing up in any fashion in Hulk or Iron Man.

This would be really cool if it turns out to be true. That's the one thing I never bought about the Marvel flicks thus far, that in each movie, the titular superhero is the ONLY superhero in that entire universe. That's almost as unbelievable as movie Spider-Man just swinging around beating up muggers and everyday criminals in between flicks. At least that's how the movies would lead you to believe he spends his time.

to build various Marvel-owned franchises towards an Avengers film would be awesome. I only wish they were also going the Ultimates route with Vaughan's Thor film, where we don't know at first that Thor is an actual god, or a guy losing his mind. But it seems like that film's going full on Asgard, which is a mistake. The thing that separates Marvel's Thor from other sword and sandals epics is Donald Blake and the New York connection.

on another note, as mediocre as Ghost Rider was, it still worked in a nice 70s era way and was pretty fun, whereas Fantastic Four ruined a)one of the single greatest comics stories ever (coming of Galactus) and b) the best Marvel villain ever (Doom). Those 2 sins are truly unforgivable. You can go further with a Ghost Rider story and improve things, but the FF movies are only ever going be saddled with a bad concept, bad cast (especially Doom) and a bad director, though maybe a new director can salvage a few things.

oh yeah, Defenders!

you are actually correct in both ATF and FBI, Nicolette was an ATF agent during the events of Jackie Brown/Rum Punch and was an FBI agent in Out of Sight

I really do like it when authors/movies connect their universes, it should be done more often. I don't think it would have been too much to have Ben Ulrich in any of the Spidermans played by Joey Pants or a mention of the Kingpin being in jail (Avi does seem to like DD based on his and MSJ commentary on the vastly improved but still not perfect DD:DC) or the X-Men being mentioned or heck even talk of Senator Kelly, I guess they could get away without mentioning the X-Men because it took place in a "not to distant future" or "a few years from now" or something like that according to X1. It's an irritant when you're watcing a superhero movie and all the cops are like "whoa have never seen that before" and it's a nice treat when mentioning another hero in that universe (DC/WB tries God bless em with a mention of Metropolis in Batman or Gotham in Superman movies, but they can't seem to nail it perfect *coughJusticeLeaguemovienoBale noRouthcough*

but i'll bite adn deal with it again. This Nick fury is based not on 616 (white supersolider Fury) but rather on the Ultimates Fury (a black man, based on SLJ) so therefore it makes sense that SLJ would indeed be the right choice for Nick Fury. The movies themselves aren't going for a 616 universe or a Ultimate Universe. They are their own universe. This was addressed by John constinine in a comic book where he talks about there being multiple versions of himself one being a JC based out of LA that wears a different colored trenchcoat or something similar referring obviously to the movie version of Constintine. Now I know that JC is a DC character but i belive it stands up for Marvel as well, the movies are a seperate universe then the comics and therefore it has it's own rules adn varations

this method has helped me enjoy many comic book movies more then I probably should. While ghost rider of film is not the 616 Ghost Rider, he is a ghost Rider of a different universe and therefore liberties can be taken (i.e. Blackheart adn Cartaker interacting with Johnny Blaze's orignes...however that doesn't excuse it from poor filmmaking or storytelling, it just helps me distinguish and not get bunched up)

this rule however does not apply to LXG, as the League was never presented as being part of a true "multiverse" but rather an amgalmverse and thus i don't know, i just lost my train of thought, making up words like amgalmverse

DC should learn a thing or two from Marvel

. . . a ridiculously implausible and juvenile story is through cross promotion with another ridiculously implausible and juvenile story. Yay hollywood. Robo-suits, anger-induced green skin, gamma bombs, villains made out of electricity, and chinese people with magical alien rings. I'm sure it will look *great* in live action.

sucked and blew ass. Spiderman was overrated shit. X-Men's S&M gimp outfits and gay undertones, Hulk's melodrama, Fantastic Fucks, Ghastly Rider, Dipshitdevil, FUCK ASS.

Uhmm.. And every German-speaker in the world.

The Incredible Hulk will be responsible for Tony Stark's slide from social drinking billionaire to full blown alcoholism. Not enough money in the world to buy a giant green dong.

If tackled properly this would rock and be an excellent intro to an avengers movie. Imagine, Nick Fury approaches Tony Stark/Iron Man re his technology. Then in the Hulk movie Fury appears to help Banner/Hulk, or perhaps help the Military contain him, with technology that has Stark industries on it etc. This would establish a link without either character making a random appearance in the movies.
who knows

could be hit or miss at this point. FF4's suck, Xmen super sucks, Elektra was emabarassingly bad but Daredevil, Hulk and Spidermans rock. I have my fingers crossed. http://tinyurl.com/pv8do
