and floating this offer as wishful thinking. The BO on their fantasy films of late has been poor. Giving Jackson his due on the RINGS $$$ would of been a small price to pay based on what these 2 films would of made for New Line but it looks like it could be too late for them and Jackson will wait for the rights to revert then Fuck them real good when his versions clean up at the BO. I can wait for the "GOOD" version of THE HOBBIT lol.

I don't understand why everyone is so ape-shit for the LotR series. The first one was pretty good, but I feel like the series as a whole TOTALLY missed the feel of the books. I understand that it's an adaptation, but I felt like Jackson tried to cram way too much action into the films. I went back and reread the battle at Helms Deep, and Tolkien doesn't spend nearly as much time on it as the films did, and Legolas being a fucking Jedi/ninja was just a little over the top for me. Gimli was all fucked up for me too, and was pretty much relegated to comic relief. I really don't know how to describe it, but the books had much more of a sense of wonder about things, and the movies just played like an over-the-top action movie.

I see what you're saying. If the movies had been made by, say Zhang Yi Mou, they would have probably felt more "adult" and more like the books.

But the fact that they weren't alone does not make them good or bad. Gimli worked well as a comic relief in the movies and have you tried sitting through a 4 hour epic without comic relief? Have you watched Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet lately?

...of stone against stone is heard coming from the mist-enshrouded cemetery. The greasy, hairy-palmed hands pushing the sarcophagus lid aside grasp the side of the coffin and painfully pull the grave's unholy occupant upright. Its glistening, misshapen head quivers in quiet lust as its senses come alive. Somewhere, somehow, a call has gone forth, a beacon so irresistible that death has had to step back in order for it to be answered.

A charnel gust of fetid air is expelled from its ghastly maw, along with rivulets of half-digested semen, instantly withering the leaves on the willow drooping from above. A new, tremulous breath is drawn into cracked, shriveled lungs only to be expelled once more, this time forming the vague and crude semblance of a single word...

"Jaaaaaacksssssooonnnn.....!"

Across the land, kittens and puppies die in the helpless arms of weeping children.

Ringwearer9 has risen again.

I mean, really. We're talking, depending on what they want to do, 4-6 hours of a perfect standalone story arc that could easily be a nice two hour movie. It's all about the cash, but I guess I can't blame them for contemplating such a thing, and I can forgive it if they use the money to go start up even awesomer fantasy and sci-fi epics. Nevertheless, one part or two parts, it will probably be ... searching for a word here ... Awesome?

Sci-fi/Fantasy Movies that I want to be made
by 'Cholera's Ghost
Dec 1st, 2007
08:58:00 PM
Now that LOTR has shown that a good fantasy/sci-fi epic can be a good investment here's my top 5 list of what I hope gets made: 1) Hyperion, repeat 4 times. And by the way, does anyone know what became of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Princess of Mars project? I remember reading about that but that was long ago now. There is the potential for a real ass-kicking adventure movie there. Whatever elitist literary qualms people might have, or snobby postmodern deconstruction you throw at it, the spirit of that book is fierce and mighty and deserves the big screen.
A couple things
by Magma Suit
Dec 1st, 2007
08:59:28 PM
a) Not news. In fact, I would go so far as to call this "anti-news". b) The Hobbit should not be done in 2 parts. It's a much more simple, straightforward adventure story than LOTR. c) The Hobbit should not be made now at all. Perhaps in a few years (like, say a GENERATION) after the LOTR film craze has passed into legend (because to me no man can play Bilbo but Ian Holm, and God knows he's old). This just comes across as New Line trying to milk it dry (how many Battle For Middle-Earth games do we really need?).

Jackson isn't proposing to do the novel the Hobbit in two films. In the interview Quint references he talks about basically making one movie of the Hobbit and another based on some of those pages and pages that Christophen Tolkien's been exhuming all these years. A film that would fill in the story between the Hobbit and Fellowship (what Gandalf and Aragorn were up to, etc.) I've watched every damn second of my EE's so I don't care if he makes 5 flicks out of the Silmarillion and Farmer Giles of Ham- I'm on board.

Everyone used to have epic flame wars with Ringbearer9 the Hater King and his hordes, though DocPazuzu more often than not was on the front lines bearing the standard for the sane talkbackers. You are speaking of course, of the legendary Kong Wars of '05, one of the most trying ages I have witnessed in Talkback, but also one of its finest hours. I personally came out of it with a grudging respect for Ringbearer. He stuck by his guns with his over-the-top anti-Jackson campaign against overwhelming odds, and became something of a talkback legend in the process, witness DocPazuzu's chilling passage.

Jackson's camp will of course deny until such time as Jackson and Shaye make their own - who else would confirm/break an announcement of this size? Nothing has changed in my book. We are simply waiting for the official announcement now from Jackson/Shaye anytime between tomorrow and 2 years (as my sources said). The timeline is secondary to me! My post is updated as well. Dec 2nd, 2007
12:33:14 AM
Quint received word from Jackson's camp that there is no deal in place, while Marketsaw received word that it will inevitably happen, but a deal has not yet been signed. Obviously both are correct--Jackson has obvsiously not signed a final deal to direct The Hobbit (or it would have been announced), and, yet, he obviously will direct the films in 3-D once New Line's option expires (as MGM and the Tolkien camp have been saying). So yeah, this is non-news, but neither AICN or Marketsaw are "wrong".

The LOTR movies were 'ok' but two things i hated about them were A: the 'ghosts cream the Orcs at the end' was over done and ruined the climax. and B: the world of LOTR seemed so 'empty'. Ok NZ is a lovely place but the whole movie was just open planes for miles with the occasional small, cramped settlement. The capital of Gondor had a small satalite town near it and that was it. I don't want Jackson gaying up 'The Hobbit' with a two part spread. It's a cute and compact story. Get it told in 150 minutes and move on.

First they don't have that much time. The rights will revert back to the Zaentz Company. They would be crazy to resell the rights to New Line. Second, supposedly the Tolkien Estate is preparing a major lawsuit against Zaentz that would if won put an end to any further projects of any kind in films, games, role playing games, etc. From what I've heard the chances of them losing the law suit are extremely slim and the case they have about a breach of contract is extremely strong.

Over the last few days I have read so-called movie fans bag James Camerons talent, questioned Indy 4 as a cash grab(not to mention bagging Spielberg), fear a JLA movie made by George Miller and now people hate the LOTR trilogy. A series of films that are regarded as a major accomplishment and are possibly the greatest filmaking achievement of the last 20 years. You fucks are unbelievable.

The man made them real and gave them a dimension that few movies have nowadays, and in case your wondering I have read all the books including the Silmarillion and I gotta say apart from a couple of things (Gimlis light relief being one) Jackson knocked it out of the fucking park. I witnessed scenes only dreamed about and all were done note perfect. "Ohhhhhhh but he forgot about Bombadill". Its called film adaption morons.

Continue with the live action, at least for continuities sake. Oh, and those complaining about the Ring films would be complaining no matter what was released. If the movie was a 100% adaptation they would complain that it was too long and with too much action, and that Bombadil was gay. Unless you're arguing that a film never should have been made, I don't see how you can complain about Jackson's movies without being a complete pedant.

I'm on board. I come out of these 3-D movies wondering how on earth I'll be able to deal with simpleton, two dimensional films for the rest of my life. In fact, the revival of 3-D may help to light a fire under the proverbial ass of theater chains nationwide since a homeward-based version of this technology is not likely to surface for some time. And I also agree on the Fraser flick - difference being that I, in all probabilty, will NOT see it. Looked very hokey and perhaps it was due in part to the eyeballs not being adjusted to the 3-D but the effects didn't come close to matching the Beowulf perfection witnessed during the feature presentation.

I don't really care for them, but I recognize the LOTR films as being well-made and something of an achievement. That said they are no where near as groundbreaking or influential as Star Wars was and is. Jackson basically got a blank check from New Line and that coupled an already popular and beloved story made the movies pretty close to a slam dunk. Say what you want about GL but he made ANH on a shoestring, and financed all the sequels himself—and all of it based on his own ideas and story. I'd like to see PJ doing something based on his own ideas that isn't puppet porno or schlock.

I hate it when people use that phrase myself. Times have change, the power of films has changed. You're right DarthVedder, Jackson was working with a previously existing story while Lucas was creating something out of whole cloth. With the internet the shock value of something new isn't there like it used to be. That being said, I really liked the Ring films and can't imagine a better undertaking. It's been a while since I've popped them in the DVD player but there's something to be said about a three or four hour movie that immerses you in its mythology. New Line should stop bitching and just pay up. They're going to end up making tons of money anyway.

LOTR Book Lovers Who Hate the Movies
by emvan
Dec 2nd, 2007
08:45:16 PM
... have got to have the weirdest and saddest neural wiring on the planet. I've read the book 18 times (in 42 years), been published on it, and will be the first in line to excoriate PJ for omitting the novel's single most important scene (Gollum's near-repentance), for not understanding the importance of the Scouring of the Shire (which could easily have been 10 crucial minutes of the ROTK EE), and for a host of others (mostly minor) sins. If I wanted to focus on what wasn't right and didn't work, I could certainly hate the movies. But what's bad about the movies is massively overwhelmed by what's good, and what's good is often not just good but breathtakingly great, and great on numerous levels.

What's especially amusing is that the complaints of the Tolkien purists inevitably reveal how little they understand the book; they're just fixated on the verbatim story as if they were four-year-olds who want to be told the exact same story at bedtime every night. They have no sense at all of the way the story actually works and hence of the brilliance of PJ's streamlining job (e.g, how the change in location of the last battle of the Second Age changes the public history of the Ring which both changes Aragorn's character and causes Gandalf to get Frodo on the road just months after the Shadow of the Past, rather than taking 17 years.) I especially laugh my ass off whenever the purists criticize the movie's version of Arwen, when the movie's version is more faithful to Tolkien than the book's (read the Silmarillion tale of Beren and Luthien, idiots) and is a pretty good guess as to what Arwen might have been like if she hadn't been invented by Tolkien as he was finishing the book, or if he had had the energy to rewrite the whole thing once he had figured out the story he was trying to tell (see? The book's not perfect, either.)

Those complaints about Arwen always pissed me off. If they were true Tolkien-heads they would know that Jackson basically did what Tolkien wished he had. I appreciate even more him holding back Shelob till Return. If he had followed Frodos timeline they would have been out of whack with the concurrent adventure timelines. His skill at deriding the essence of the novels and keeping as much in as humanly possible blows me away, especially in the extended versions which really do much more justice to the little details.

You keep making the same mistakes. You keep assuming JACKSON is the one who brough the "skill" to the whole proceeding. Fact is, he says that he never bothered to reread the books prior to making the movies!!!! And he only read the books once, 15 years previous, and he says it "took me forever to plow through them". His co-writers were big Tolkien fans. Jackson's "skill" was to add the "Dwarf Tossing" joke, and geek out over monster designs and CGI. He's a retard. So stop talking about JACKSON'S skill. Just because someone is a director doesn't mean they had total control over everything. In fact, because of the massive amount of work involved, he was less in control of everything than if he'd shot the movies one-at-a-time instead of all together at once.

Why are you posting here under a lame pseudonym?

I mean, since you've figured out that PJ is not in control (not the auteur) of his own films, you must be a famous film critic who is revolutionizing the field, right?

Of course Walsh and especially Boyens, not PJ, are responsible for the brilliance of the story adptation. I was sort of under the impression that PJ *hired them to do precisley that* and *then approved everything they came up with.* I guess I missed the story where they kidnapped him at gunpoint and forced themselves onto the project and forced their interpretation on him.

Your specific rebuttal to my other points is spot-on, though. O, wait . . . there wasn't any.

It's just that his contributions did not come from a love for the books, or even the characters. Just listen to the commentaries on the extended DVDs of the films. He's constantly saying stuff like "I hate wizards and magic" or "In my opinion Gandalf is as manipulative as Saruman", or "I thought it would be funny for the pony to get dragged down by the tentacles going "eee aww". Whenever the films depart in tone from the books, you can guarantee Jackson's hand in it, because only he could relish Faramir's men beating the shit out of Gollum, or think it would be fun for Aragorn to chop off the Mouth of Sauron's head (in the extended edition). Only he would express regret that we didn't see MORE arrows impaling elephants, including one into one elephants' eye. He's a sadist, witness his "funny" zombie/alien films. His purpose in making these films was as a special effects ad for his WETA company, and to indulge his own love for special effects monsters. As he's admitted, it wasn't out of extreme love for Tolkien or Lord of the Rings. His two co-writers loved Tolkien, he got the opportunity to get rich making the films, and he went for it.

...but I Didn't think some of his changes worked that well. Sure cutting out Bombadil was fine, ditto the Scouring-but there was something about gutting 17 years from the Party to them actually leaving, making Frodo a 22 year old(well you know...), that rubbed me the wrong way. I read these things some 22 times(at least) back in the day, and frankly I'm glad that we actually got what we got from Jax, Boyen and Walsh considering.

But the 'purists' can caterwaul all they want, and it's legit, too. The books and the movies cannot be the same things. I remember seeing the stills of Arwen leading the elves down the gateway of Horns Deep(nice guys...), and you have that army of the dead swarming thru Minas Tirith whilst it only bags the Southrons fleet etc in the books. Etc etc.

Different, NOT better, but for a movie--maybe this streamlining was the only way to go.

So, Evendom there-I don't find fault w/ what Jax did so much, but to claim that his take on Arwen was what Tolkien REALLY wanted to do-that's bogus and you know it. Might as well also claim that he wanted an army of Giant Robots(TM) w/ the White Hand planted on their chests to issue outta Isengard the second Treebeard and co loosed the flood(which in the book was slowly and laborious done ala everything else there-Ents make dam, divert river, etc instead of the Jacque Shoq Shallaque pull-keystone-hey-instant-floo d routine in the movie) and started firing away at our friends in the horsey-armor. And I'm rambling. But I thinks youse got my drift.

I just saw Beowulf and it was absolutely horrible! The technology simply is not there yet. The characters are flat--especially the interiors of mouths, eyes are dead, emotion is completely lacking--all of this adds up to a movie that has no heart. Funny thing is is that Final Fantasy looked good, while Briowulf looked horrible. Is American computer animation simply that far behind? Don't get me started either, on Gaiman's hack job....shudder. If I never see another of these masculine fantasy stories I'll be quite happy.

Just go ahead and do the Hobbit PJ and forget about the 3D aspect of it. Just the thought of the same team that did LOTR working on the Hobbit gives me a big case of the warm and fuzzy. Sigh, are some of you still carping about the couldda shoulddas with LOTR? As some famous Hobbit once said "There's the way it oughta be and there's the way it is." What we got from PJ was an undeniable artistic and commercial success that managed to get a very complex story over to even the least knowledgeable. He also managed to make (mostly) even long time fans happy. Hmmm, how is it that a guy who, according to a tiny minority, didn't even grasp let alone appreciate the story manage to get it so right then? Looks like the art of trolling is alive and well at AICN.
