I'd LOVE to say that I loved it - but I didn't. Don't get me wrong: It's great entertainment, Michelle is amazing, some plot details are really cool, I dug the old toasters (even though they looked VERY fake, and prove that sometimes, old school effects are better), and it's definitely head and shoulders above season three - but splitting up the movie into two nearly unconnected plot threads left too little room for either. The Adama plot feels like filler, while the Cane plot has a lot of holes left. Still - as far as "special" episodes goes, this is pretty good.

I think during my first viewing that I was expecting too much. This is pretty much just two episodes set somewhere between seasons 2 and 3. Once I took that in I was able to enjoy the episode a lot more during the second viewing.

I liked it, but felt some of the Cain flashbacks actually sort of undermined the events I'd already seen in the series - like they were reverse engineering dramatic moments for us and thus taking something away in the mix. Loved the old school Cylons though, and the guy who plays young Adama is ace. And I must say, props to the production team - it's great to see an old human/Cylon hybrid with properly thick nasal hair. There just aren't enough of those on TV nowadays.

I think it only fair to point out the excellent VFX are in fact done mostly in-house now by Gary Hutzels team.Zoic did some wicked work on this show (as ever) but I don't think they've been on it since season 3. Atmosphere still do a sizable chunk of the work too I think(the quality of which has improved considerably over their time on the show).

Ron Moore, on his blog, says "I refuse to believe that we won't finish, that we won't be back to film our final stories, but I know and accept there is that possibility. The strike will be a seminal event for many of us in this business as it's put literally everything we care about in the balance (if only for a short time so far) for something we all believe is important. ... Galactica's coming back, I frakking promise you that. But I am ready to put the rest of the story on the table and take the risk that I'll never be able to tell it, in support of this strike." http://tinyurl.com/2er8rn

to think of the possibility that Galactica may end without a proper finish. I'm sure everything will be done to wrap up the final episodes after the strike, but who knows how long this will go on. Once the strike ends, how difficult is it going to be to put BSG back into production with everyone that needs to be involved. We may end up with some 2 hour special movie instead of the second half of a season. Pondering all this really sucks.

It had the best episode ever (Exodus 2). It had Baltar on a cylon basestar. Tigh became a bad ass with an eye patch. Anders also became bad ass (I didn't like him before). I thought Season 1 spent too much time on Caprica with Helo, and in Season 2 I hated Admiral Cain and her crew. However after watching Razor I like them much more. Razor adds alot more depth to them, you find out why they were such dicks to everyone before they all died.

sometimes you see an actor/tress who seem too comfortable in a role that you dont like - like thats who they really are. i got the distinct impression watching razor that whoever that miserable asian girl is, i dont want to know her in real life, for fear of needing to slap her face at some point. even if some luvvy tells me its 'just a role', i didnt even think she was that good. sullen, monotone, glower. got it. by the end, the whole redemption bit with staying behind felt really false.

BSG= The single greatest progam ever

BSG is not only the best sci-fi show ever made. It is quite simply the best program ever made. I laugh when piece of shit programs like Grey's (made for retards) Anatomy wins Emmy awards + BSG is not even nominated. I think that BSG will find a much bigger audience in syndication + other media like dvd/i-tunes. I predict BSG's after life to be much like the original Star Trek. The program is too good not reach a larger audience.

After S03E04, season 3 wasn't up to the task...
by SantiagoAtez
Nov 24th, 2007
12:38:32 PM
...granted, BSG seasons 1 and 2 rose the expectation substantially. But after the New Caprica chapters, season 3 became extremely unfocused and IMHO a mess. I liked Razor, but not nearly as much as you all did. I thought it only served to REPLAY what we already knew about Admiral Cain (killing the XO, executing the civilians, etc.), but without telling us WHY she did it. For instance, by showing us the "treadmill" conversation between her and the XO, the mystery upon her complete overreaction and execution of the XO becomes even MORE of a mystery.
Razor only REPLAYED what we already knew of Cain...
by SantiagoAtez
Nov 24th, 2007
12:45:46 PM
...without telling us WHY. We already knew you killed the XO...and by watching it, it became even more unbelievable and unrealistic...especially after show before that they were sometimes on a first-name basis. The same can be said for the execution of the civilian families. We ALREADY knew this...and we wanted to know WHY she went to such lengths to start an offensive against the Cylons without protecting the civilians. He extreme decisions weren't addressed AT ALL. And for what Adama said about her not having someone like Tigh, Lee, etc. with her to guide her....well, that happens when you SHOOT YOUR XO IN THE FRACKIN' HEAD. I expected better from Razor.

I know this makes no sense, bu the Final Cylon...
by expert_40
Nov 24th, 2007
02:05:34 PM
... HAS to be Lee.

Like I said, it makes no sense, but neither does the other four of the Final Five.

Here's my crazy theory.

The Final Five Cylons have the ability to not download into new bodies... but download into NEW HUMAN BODIES, much like Hindu and Buddist reincarnation.

Stay with me here. Tyrol, Anders, Tigh, and the President's Secretary... they all have been living for years, had REAL families with mothers and fathers. But the souls of the Final Five Cylons figured out how to really reincarnate themselves.

And I believe this will tie into Hera and Nicky. These babies will have the same ability. So that means the Final Five are probably true human-Cylon hybrids of some sort. Remember, this has all happened before.

What if the Lords of Kobol and the Cylon God (The Jealous Lord) are just artificial lifeforms that humans created a long time ago, like on Earth before humans had to leave earth for Kobol?

And these Final Five are just the original artificial lifeforms which have lived for the millenia that the Colonial History has been around?

Think about it... the Final Five are REALLY the very first Cylons, though they weren't called that once upon a time.

That's how the 13th Colony new about them when they built that Temple of the Five on the Alge Planet.

And as for Starbuck... she's really the FIRST human-cylon hybrid. We were never told who her father was. Could have been a Leoben for all we know. And that explains why she's back. So she's like Hera and Nicky. Not really the 13th, 14th, and 15th Cylons, but a new form of life all-together.

So what do y'all think? Are my theories so out there they don't make sense, or am I so crazy, I am making sense?

BSG started out as a really good series, then halfway through season one it started to tank, and has never recovered. Strike killing this show

I f the strike kills this show I am not sure how to feel.

On the one hand this show has been so bad for so long (just a waste of good talent on ridiculous plots) I would really like it to end

On the other hand, now that we have gotten this far, I would like an ending.

I have said before that I feel like Charlie Brown with Lucy & the football regarding this show. I think it sucks, and they keep pulling the rug out from under us for no good reason (the plot twists rarely make any sense what so ever), but I loved this show so much as a kid and the production/acting (for the most part) is so well done I keep coming back, only to have the football yanked away at the last moment.

I really want to stop playing the game, but I really want to kick the football, too.

Well worth the wait and more. I was really glad to see so many elements of the show's strengths at work again. As always, the acting was strong - including a great performance by Stephanie Jacobsen. (I would have liked to have seen more of ol' Kendra Shaw...as well as Admiral Cain.) Certain individual character scenes were riveting and the placement and quality of the FX were top notch. While the introduction of the original Hybrid was clever, the appearance of the old-school Cylons was just cool icing on the cake.

My only complaints would be the shortening of the Adama flashback (they should have just included the whole webisode sequence) and the somewhat clumsy usage of the folding knife. While I think the symbolism of the "razor" analogy is generally understood, I don't think it was conveyed in the best manner = Cain's conversion due to Gina's betrayal should have been given a little more attention.

Other than that, it was a fantastic return that only makes me more anxious for the start of Season 4. I wish we could FTL jump to March...

The entire Gina-Cain arc almost comes off as a morality tale. Cain later dies at Gina's hand while Gina dies a "No resurrection" death. Wow. Also, Razor raises the question about why the Hybrids go from being lucid in thought, eloquent and articulate to speaking gibberish that is peppered with "revelation."

But their appearance also raises other questions like where did they go? Did they branch off independently or where they contained form without?

Just the way people drool over this dumb fucking show goes to show how truly starved we are for a really good sci-fi show. Just because something is dark, drab and "talky" doesn't mean it is the "new era" of sci-fi. This show is a bunch of overhyped melodramatic soap opera bullshit DISGUISED as a science fiction series. This isn't to say that there is any better sci-fi out there right now because besides Doctor Who frankly there's none.

I think he would be a nice fit over the course of season 4. Always loved Carl Lumbly on Alias, would love to see him get some work here. He could fill in for the role that Kat filled before she ate the radiation bullet. I can easily see Bulldog's story coming to an end in some heroic blaze of glory where he rams his Viper into the core of some kind of Cylon death star or something. Would be cool.

Rumour has it that the 'March' start date just means that they'll run an updated 'The Story So Far'. The new season will STILL start in April.

The only thing I look forward to with BSG ending is being able to finally remove the SciFi Channel from my package. Do you know you can legally do that in the States? Your cable company will not tell you, but you can have a channel removed and have your bill pro-rated because of it.

Among other things he revealed, "I actually have been thinking about what I would do in the (I believe unlikely) event that the show never came back. There is a full storyline for the rest of the season and ultimately, the finale and I'm not sure what I would do with all that information. There's a part of me that would want to sit on the story, lock it all up and then wait for the studio to come to its senses and try to finish the story in some shortened form -- a miniseries or TV movie or something. I could also see writing the end in a book or graphic novel. I also have the recorded sessions of the writers' room at the start of the season where we discussed the overview of the last arc and a more intensive session from the retreat this summer where we broke down the stories in more specific terms and I've thought about just posting those recordings in the event of cancellation so that people could at least hear what our plans were originally. I dunno. Too depressing to really think about at this juncture." http://tinyurl.com/2kg8da
New theory: BSG is set in the far-off future -- Earth's future
by Prof. Pop-Cult
Nov 25th, 2007
08:01:41 AM
Humanity on Earth was dying for some reason, but had yet to perfect spacefaring technology. So humans were trapped on Earth. However, they spread their genetic seed to another part of the galaxy. (Perhaps they used probes that ran on artificial intelligence -- an early precursor to Cylon technology/intelligence.) During the Cylon War, the Cylons learned this truth when they dissected humans. But the Colonial humans are not genetically "complete" -- they will still be vulnerable to what killed the Earth humans. So the Cylons created human replicant versions of themselves to interbreed with the Colonials. So Hera and Callie and Tyrol's kid are actually, on a genetic level, Earth humans. All this history has been lost or screwed up through the generations, but the fact is, they cannot return to Earth. Earth is not their salvation -- it will be their death. (And this theory finally explains/ties into why the technology, culture, language, government and politics of the Colonials' is very similar to that of modern-day human civilizations' on Earth.)
Two hints that may support my theory...
by Prof. Pop-Cult
Nov 25th, 2007
08:11:04 AM
1. Hera has O positive blood -- the most common blood type among Earth humans. But the Colonials were shocked to discover this, clueing us in to the fact that such a blood type doesn't exist among them. 2. Remember that mysterious satellite that killed off an entire Cylon Basestar with some mysterious virus? What's the deal with that? It was theorized briefly by the Colonials that it might have been an Earth weapon against the Cylons, but what if it was something else, which just so happened to kill the human-replicant Cylons?
Prof. Pop-Cult...

Is that this show does kind of go overboard with the "tough, angry woman in charge" characters. Yes, yes, very progressive. actually i thought it made cain's torture of gina *less* shocking not more. in season 3, i couldn't understand how a woman could torture another woman like that without any remorse. but now that we understand their history, it makes more sense. gina used cain, got close to her, made her care about her and then betrayed her. i still think the torture was cruel and unnecessary, but at least there was more motive behind it now.

(1) Lee Adama is the 5th of the Final Five. (2) The Final Five were created by the original Hybrid who got nuked at the end of Razor and were all born/raised like normal people in the Colonies. (3) The original Hybrid is the Cylon God and controls the Cylons through the other hybrids and the humans through the Final Five -- the entire thing is an elaborate set up to lead them all back to Earth. (4) Starbuck is aligned with whoever represents the actual gods of Colonists religion and is working against the Cylon God's plan. (5) Both the original Hybrid and Kendra will return in some capacity.

Hey poopsies, the BSG effects are not longer done by Zoic. There is no involement with Atmosphere in Vancouver. "Razor" was done by the in house team in Los Angeles, on a gruelling very hard schedule. The remainder of the FX work will show up on the DVD, with plenty of hot Old Toaster Action. Zoic has been out of the picture since the end of Season 2, and Atmosphere mid way through Season 3. The BSG-VFX-LA team is comprised of former Foundation Imaging, Zoic and Eden FX peeps, and a couple of great compositing finds made along they way, some 2D work done at a Vancouver BSG facility, and some wonderful freelancers that have amazing credits, all led by Gary Hutzel and Doug Drexler. They have Season 4 under control.

I loved the episode, and loved that there were two silver pilots and a gold commander. But why use CG at all? It didn't enhance anything and was a distraction. Great way to start season 4! I know "Razor" is it's own parallel story, but that was fantastic.

The only part I didn't like was the appearance of the silly 1970s Cylons, but then I pretended I hadn't seen them and all was ok.

As always, I really enjoyed the FX work in "Razor". The Pegasus breaking docks as Cylons attack was better and more badass than 90% of what I've seen in movies this year. Bravo! Plus, the wonderful parallel of fascism versus democracy during wartime, as well as the toll of becoming a human razor, was dramatic in the best way. Great writing.

Thank God this show is on television.

First she fracked over Picard and then the remains of the human race, BSG really does not help with my feminine trust issues. I’m English and have been brought up on old + new Who and love it, but BSG exists on a completely different plane of excellence. Extra Kudos for all the little Aliens/Hudson nods and winks and for proving there is a God with the “by your command” moment. Top drawer, now for the 36year wait for the new season.......

hey tk412, why aren't you at your post!

Dazzler, I totally agree about the old skool cylons shooting bullets - they rubbed me the wrong way, too - but not that much...

Not being impressed by most of this for reasons others have already gone into, I did actually like one thing (apart from the old cylons and raiders which ROCKED!) about this and that was the hybrids. I'm just shooting the shit here, but it seems to me that guy and little girl Adama met (or at least their clones) form the human part of the hybrids that drive the cylon base stars. I could be totally on the wrong track here, but it makes sense for them to be using the only human parts they still got left after all those other failures in that lab, no?

No, I didn't like the appearance of the 1970s Cylons. And I'm not a 12-year-old douche. I watched all the disco-dancing, cocaine-sniffing drama unfold in 1970s, which is why I never want to see any of it again. That shit sucks compared to the dramatic, well-written, badass storyline the new BSG established. The appearance of 1970s Cylons pushed disco balls, The Dukes of Hazzard, and Saturday Night Fever back into mind, which I REALLY could've done without.

I realize Ron Moore and company were tipping their cap to the old school, which I respect. But the 1970s Cylons themselves didn't mesh with the story. Not at all.

When they're gonna set the nuke off I knew they were gonna re-do the climax in Armageddon where Bruce Willis sacrifices himself to manually blow the nuke. Why they had to reuse that old standard is beyond me. And as for the last Cylon, my money is on Laura Roslin for the following reasons - - She is somehow the only surviving member of the original cabinet - Her cancer is cured with Cylon blood - When D'Anna sees the final 5 in "Eye of Jupiter" she is shocked to see someone she recognizes before she resurrects for the last time. I guess now we just got to wait for the HD DVD versions until Season 4 starts.

This BSG Movie Blew me away. So much crap SciFi out there, but this was amazing. A gripping exploration of how morality slips away in the face of war. Did we ever get that from Star Trek? I think not. These guys are playing hardball. Yes, it has its flaws. Like why they continue to kill Cylons when they know they'll just be reborn. Seems like another strategy is needed. that so much of this talkback is concerned with sex scenes and 3 sums and hot showers with all of the female leads in the show and not actually discussing the movie....typical but ok...i may be stupid but what was the whole point of the movie ?? did i miss something ? seemed random and off topic....the only reference to kara came at the end, i did like the old cylon models reappearence and the reason that they did reappear..."guardians" does sound cool and i got chills when they were talking in the cockpit in the classic 2 pilot 1 commander like in the old series .....and there was nothing wrong with the 70s cylons...the show has shown from the beginning that the vipers , centurions, raiders and stuff from the prior show are considered past events and items to this show...wasnt just a ploy to draw in fans of the old show.....they were welcome...right down to where the one said "by your command" ... still dont get what the episode was gettin at ..but was good

I loved seeing the old Centurians in action. And a gold one! Whee!

I KNEW Cain was a lesbian. Her balls were way too big for her to be straight.

Title character was interesting. Kinda hard and bitchy, but interesting. Very cute in a 90's Angelina Jolie way.

No Tigh? Sigh.

I was sort of hoping to see Apollo put on a few pounds at the end. . . Maybe snacking on donuts.

Dualla was nowhere to be seen...

Honestly, I like the design of the old toasters better. They just look more intimidating than the new ones. The new models look like they are robots meant for building cars in a GM plant...

Sex scene. Would'a been good. The relationship DOES explain why Cain was such a psycho, though. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Give me a night alone with Starbuck...

And if she IS one, I'll fuck the Cylon right out of her.

Seriously, she's hot in that "could kick your ass" kind of way.

Significance of the Hybrid (spoilers)

I don't understand how this Hybrid affects the larger scheme of things within the Galactica universe. Has the existence of the Hybrid and its importance been discussed in prior episodes? I don't get the correlation b/w the experiments of what young Adama discovered in the flashbacks and what happens at the end. I thought the experiments were just the Cylons perfecting the new "looks-like-a-human model" that is common-place throughout the series. And now we have this Hybrid thing that recognizes the girl ("I have been waiting a long time for you") and then starts prophesizing about future dangers for mankind? I feel like there is much more to this.
Agreed, regarding design of Old Toasters

IMHO they ooze more ill will/evil intent than both the skinjobs and the new models.

Its about who was calling the shots concerning the new "looks-like-a-human model."
Baltar is in it.

He's standing behind Tigh when Adama has his flashback next to the old school Cylon raider. Not in it much, I grant you, but he's there all right.

they do seem more evil looking..the facepiece is almost like a face...like a stormtrooper helmet from star wars...anyone else notice they made them more robotic from the waist down. which was cool...seein the old raiders and the old centurions in action gave me chills even tho they stick to the new "no sound in space" thing that galactica has goin

Source: thefutoncritic Sci Fi's "Battlestar Galactica: Razor" posted a lackluster 1.21 household rating (1,004,000 adults 18-49) for its premiere on Saturday, on par with its third season finale (1.21 household rating on 3/25/07) and just ahead of its series low numbers (1.09 on 3/4/07). Compared with the network's other Saturday originals this year, "Razor" fell behind 12 of the 19 aired thus far while a year ago (11/25/06), the premiere of "Basilisk: The Serpent King" posted a 1.4 household rating.

The old-school had those butt-capes & swords, which, wouldn't fly so hot now methinks. SPOILER if you haven't watched the minisode yet...the sword now pops right out of their arm. very cool. It's nice, they updated them slightly, definitely more robotic...coolest version of the Cylons yet IMO.

The DVD arrived yesterday. Really enjoyed it. It's odd reading the talkback though as it's clear there are some big differences between the broadcast version (which is included but I didn't watch that) and the DVD version. Well, Baltar at least gets to talk in this one (no extra scenes but he does have a chat with Six mocking how her ancestors look like appliances). The Cain flashbacks just explain she was a hard bitch even back when she was a kid. And yes, Husker says cocksucker, which seems a bit forced in as the same scene uses frakker in the minisode. I also think the Husker flashback included more of the minisodes stuff than the broadcast version - the knife in the arm bit was definitely in my cut. And all I got about season 3 from it was that 4 of the Final Five were revealed but I knew that - even if I didn't I would have just understood that the final reveal was important. Good stuff, maybe I'll get the Season 3 boxset before month's end after all (it's been out in the UK for months).
