Video games have, for the most part, some very compelling plots that would work wonderfully on screen if only someone in Hollywood took said plots seriously enough to write, cast and direct a worthy film adaptation.

But funny none-the-less. This review is dissapointing but after the previews it's kind of what I expected. It's a shame cause the games are actually pretty cool. I swear the people who adapt video games into movies need to play the games first to get why they have appeal in the first place.

gonna sneek into this after I caught The Mist to kill time while I waited for the next showing of No Country for Old Man. See I work seven days a week so I don't find time to see movies, and I got four days off and move to far away to go visit my family, so I am gonna spend all one day in the theater, and one day clearing out my DVR. i remember seeing the trailer for this and being distinctly underwhelmed. Olyphant's normally great and having seen him play an ornery sheriff in Deadwood and a psycho douche in Girl Next Door would make me think he could play badass reasonable well.

but from the trailer, it looked like he was bringing his Die Hard 4 "i don't know what i'm doing in this picture" best.

good review, massa. "a cancer patient with a good tailor" indeed.

Video Games to movies
by Series7
Nov 21st, 2007
10:14:59 AM
Can be done, they just need a director with any merit to adapt them and give him a budget. Sam Rami was never a huge director, but he was a solid director and has some classic movies, he dabled in comics before with Darkman. But comic book movies where all pretty bad until Spiderman, X-men 1 isn't that good (what ever happened to Ray Park by the way?) but after Spiderman, X2, and Spidy 2 people noticed Comic Book movies. And realized that they can be done. I think its gonna take someone to adapt Zelda and show the world that there is world of movies within video games. I know batman and superman, but they were TV shows and cartoons as well it was easier to digest as a movie. And I know there were Spidy cartoons. There were also Zelda cartoons, and I think that game is just well known enough to make an awesome movie. I say take a director like Danny Boyle, someone very versitile and make it, he is a little too dark. If you make one awesome video game conversion people will start putting more money and effort into the rest of them.

Massa loved Enchanted but hated this?
by Frank Black
Nov 21st, 2007
10:32:55 AM
After reading this review I went to his Enchanted review which was gushing (the previews for Enchanted made me angry at how stupid it looked) and Hitman doesn't even get a little leniency even though WE KNOW IT WILL BE STUPID BUT FUN! And furthermore, Olyphant is a badass! He was the only good thing in the last Die Hard film and his role in Deadwood redefines badass. I'll see Hitman today because I like Olphant, shit exploding, the video game, and naked chicks and I won't expect it to be great but I'll know it does what I pay it to, which is to be loud, dumb and fun! And furthermore, if I had family nearby, we watch an older classic DVD before I'd subject them to Enchanted! Massa's tastes obviously don't reflect mine nor do I feel like his reviews come from someone old enough to objectively and fairly make sound judgment.
A few things:
by Strabo
Nov 21st, 2007
10:36:22 AM
Massa: Olyphant isn't a total badass? Have you never watched Deadwood? There were multiple times in that series where he brought a can of righteous whoop-ass down on some poor schmuck's head. He can be a great actor, but I think that, between his part in Die Hard 4 and this (presumably), he is probably going to wear out all the good will he had built up from Deadwood. I hope that's not the case, and I hope he gets a better agent, or better taste in scripts.

Anyway, video game adaptations are currently living in the same hell that comic book adaptations were two decades ago. The same people who were shrilly screaming then that comics aren't art and can never make a good film are screaming the same thing now about video games.

That was before Sin City. And X-Men 2. And A History of Violence. And V for Vendetta. And Batman Begins. And Road to Perdition. And Ghost World. Did I forget any?

I wish they'd pull their heads out of their asses. I wish the writers and directors of game adaptations would do the same thing. Either that, or shut the fuck up and stop fucking with the genre.

First of all, making a movie based on a game that is inspired by other movies is just dumb. "The creators of Hitman were inspired by Luc Besson's assassin movies such as Nikita and The Professional, Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and the popular action movies of the Hong Kong film industry."

Second, why the fuck didn't they cast David Bateson? He's the model for the character, AND he does the voice. THE VOICE. He *IS* Mr. 47. The voice is the MOST IMPORTANT thing about Hitman... And they botched it in the movie.

Finally, I'm told they basically ignore game continuity and make up a story from scratch. BIG MISTAKE. The appeal of Hitman as a series is that it follows a very clear narrative. The needed to treat it like a book in terms of adapting for the screen.

Ultimately, though, they needed to not make a movie without the actual star that made the series hot.

can be done and was done in Deadwood. But you aren't going to get it without him putting on a few pounds like he did in Deadwood. So far, he's been asked to play a badass-incognito. i.e. Hacker in Die Hard 4.0, a spineless scuzzbag in that hot chick movie, and now a hitman who's confused or seems to have a heart. (God hitman looks awful.)
If you've seen the Deadwood episode titled "Sold Under Sin", season 1 finale, then you know he can play a badass. Conviction, a willingness and a desire to inflict damage is what's needed to play a badass. You put on top of that his ability to act and I think you can have a badass at Bond-like levels.

I don't know who thought Hitman would make a good movie, but they obviously didn't play the games. The story fucking sucks, period. The gameplay is the only good thing about the series, and once you remove that you're left with nothing but a shitty movie. Silent Hill is probably the best videogame adaption because it has character. It's not based only on action, it's based in an interesting world with an interesting story (which I'll admit they screwed up). Now hire some descent actors and you have yourself a movie worth watching. Action games make bad movies, but they make a quick buck, and that's the bottom line.

Yeah i there are a few out there that I ferget about. I really liked Spawn, the special effects for parts of that movie were amazing, plus Todd was part of the process, its not a great movie but good to the comic. The thing about all those movies though is that they weren't mega hits like Spidy. See the thing is that you have to make a video game movies chicks will like, and chicks dig spiderman movies, not spawn or blade or batman or superman. Yes some chicks do but for the most part they could care less. But I have never met a girl that didn't like spidy. Thats why I think Zelda could be a video game movie that chicks could like and want to see, but if they don't they are just caterting to the geeky video game guys which is not going to make for a huge success. And good directors won't be interested in adapating video games. If Jackson has stuck with Halo, i think that could have been the big hit video games need to get respect, but that's a lost dream. Plus Zelda, Halo, Warcraft are all huge games. Hitman and Blade are not big comics/games.

From the trailers it looks like he talks about his childhood, goes on a 'date' and gets laid. They should have made him a stone cold killer who keeps his mouth shut and was only motivated by a twisted sense of justice. That's as far as the character examination should have gone, the rest would just be a hard, cold and merciless action thriller.

Olyphant was a badass in Deadwood. Anyone who says he wasn't, has most likely forgotten the two greatest sentences ever spoken in the cowboy genre: 'BE where I can FIND you.' and 'Will I find you have a knife?' and the fucking brawl that ensues...Badass. Bullock taking Hearst to jail by the ear like a toddler...badass.

I do agree that Olyphant doesn't look like a tough guy in this flick. But it reminds me of the time this summer I went to Great America...there was this guy in the Flash costume that was built like a swimmer, and the costume was baggy on him, obviously a size or two smaller than the guy...and the first thing I said when I saw him after barking a laugh was: 'Looks like Flash couldn't outrun cancer.'

Of course, my apartment in Hell is going to be nice, because truly if that's the FIRST thing out of my mouth, I'm a goddamned monster.

I want more about Jumper rather than this crap, by the way! Where's the Cool News on that flick? It looks pretty awesome.

a. he is drunk at a club trying to pick up a chick

all I'm saying is that I think it's a waste of time and gay. I haven't owned a game system since super nintendo, and since then, I have learned how to play music, get girls, get a wife, and actually live my life, instead vicariously through a stupid game about bald dude sneaking up on other dudes. Or playing a pretend guitar to impress NO ONE, or pretending to hit a tennis ball with a stupid joystick instead of actually doing it in real life. I bet both of you use that stupid PWN phrase don't you?

Yeah, as in this response PWNs you. Joking. Fuck man, I have a wife, play tennis occasionally though I do suck balls and shaft at it, and help out with a buddy of mine's little wrestling show he has (setting up rings and stuff) here in the wild North, AND I go outside regularly enough to be respectable.

But even through all that, I fucking make time to participate in interactive entertainment, and think that games are fucking fun. Entertainment is just that: a waste of fucking time, so who cares if I play pretend I'm a guy in a mall, crushing zombie heads with a fucking mallet, or if you on the other hand suck cancer patients off for beer money?! Not saying you DO that, just if you did I wouldn't go off on cocksucking just because that's the way YOU choose to spend Thanksgiving. Now THAT'S a gay activity! Kidding with you man, but I wouldn't paint all video game players with the same broad 'gay' brush, just because you choose to spend your money on golf clubs, baseball bats and MetRx shakes.

Meanwhile, I'll play through another round of Wii golf against my brother, or go outside and play fucking lawn darts or whatever, knowing that whatever I do when I'm not at work is always pretty much a waste of time if I'm not doing something productive. I'll just thank my lucky stars that I have the money to waste on pretend fucking guitars, extra controllers and shit.

What often happens with projects like this is one writer will write a decent screenplay, then it will be rewritten dozens of times by producers who want more explosions and keep dumbing it down more and more. That's what happened to Doom, that's what happened to Alone in the Dark (hard to believe there was once a decent Alone in the Dark script out there before it was trashed). It's all about reaching the lowest common denominator.

I guess the best video game movie is still Silent Hill - and that was a terrible movie.

Come on guys, Games win every time! Sex has gotta be the most over rated activity of all time! Whereas Gaming is improving all the time, just think how good games will be in 5 to 10 years time! Sex is one dimensional and is pretty much the same thing over and over again. A blowy here, a bit of doggy there, up against a wall and then blowing your load over her tits. Whereas a gaming experience is different every time and with so many different types of genres your spoiled for choice. I feel sorry for short dicked men who live only for pussy and will always feel inadequate. Wish I could lend em mine, for whilst I pleasure my women every night and sometimes her friends, I gotta confess Gears of War, Halo, Dead Rising and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is always on the back of my mind! And is just me or is eating pussy just dead boring, just a load of jaw ache for something that doesn't taste nice and resembles a badly packed kebab?

Not often you guys make me laugh. But I also think you're probably right about the movie, though I haven't seen it. Have you noticed they show very little of Olyphant's face in the previews? I'm thinking they also realize that he looks silly. I like Olyphant too, but he doesn't look all tough as a baldy. This would have been a good role for Bruce Willis a while ago. Plus, Olyphant is too young and pretty for the shaved look. But maybe we should give up having high expectation for movies made from video games...
Should'a cast David Bateson
by ZeroCorpse
Nov 21st, 2007
08:06:16 PM
David Bateson was the guy who played 47 in the games. He was the model for the character, and he also performed the voice in every game. He IS 47, without a doubt. He's also an experienced actor and would have been the logical choice... Even if they had to throw more money at him than Olyphant.

Hitman is already a rip-off of a variety of movies... an homage, so-to-speak. The story is not all that important. What is important is the attitude, VOICE, and look of 47... And they BLEW IT.

This was all the casting director's fault. No matter how bad the script was, if they'd cast David Bateson in the role it would have been Mr. 47. It would have been Hitman, and they would have gotten people to see it based on that fact alone. As it stands, most fans of the game are avoiding the movie because the lead looks awful in the role. He doesn't look like 47 at all... He looks like 47's little brother, 23.5

did anyone anticipate a good flick be honest.

Hitman is not filmworthy.
by Shermdawg
Nov 21st, 2007
08:22:29 PM
This coming from a huge fan of the property. It's plot is by the numbers, and usually skipped by players to get into the real meat of the game. The main appeal of the series is it's sandbox nature of taking out contracts. It's about exploration. The enviroments are the main character, NOT Agent 47.

Also, I don't understand why Statham's name keeps coming up. He would've been just as terribly miscast as Olyphant. By casting Statham, they would most likely mold 47 into a completely different character. Hitman isn't meant to be straight up action. LIke someone mentioned before, it's Mission:Impossible. The first one. Stealth is the name of the game, and the series, despite offering a vast selection of firearms, encourages to avoid the using them.

As you would expect from any movie that uses "Google Earth" as an effect. It was like using lines to criss cross continents on a globe to signify air travel. Except on crack, and a glaringly cheap way to do so, obviously to save cash. And I'm not even going to comment on the movie because sadly the Google Earth effect as shitty as it was; was also the most innovative thing that movie accomplished. That movie was worth less than Monopoly money.

The ‘American Psycho’ star has reportedly signed up to play John Connor, the saviour of the human race, in ‘Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins’. The fourth installment of the ‘Terminator’ series is being helmed by ‘Charlie’s Angels’ director McG and is due to start filming early next year. McG hopes the movie will be the first of a new ‘Terminator’ trilogy set in the future, telling the story of the war between humans and the Skynet robots.

Entertaining, um hell yes!!! It exceeded my low expectations and had some of my favorite character actors. But I felt less cheated by this than I did with Episode II & III. If you have high hopes, you'll be disappointed but if you go in with a "why not" attitude, you may not hate yourself that much when it's over. And if you don't like those odds, then get someone to rent it in 3 months.

I really enjoyed a movie that you totally HATE. --and that's after agreeing with the facts... LOGOs on all his stuff...a freakin' screen saver with said-logo... openning up his laptop and reading about his next hit OUT in PUBLIC at the station... sure, sure... but also, he's just about invincible and lucky enough to NEVER get SHOT, which, by-the-way, is the case with many movies that you admit are GREAT and that you yourself LOVE, Im sure. And none of these points have anything to do with a video game being the source material-- that's par for the course with this genre-- and THAT's exactly what I was in the mood for tonight when I saw the movie. Olyphant was great-- Olga and the interaction between her and the hitman was tense, and funny and serious ( not in that order) -- they didnt pull any punches with her nude scenes either-- she's beautiful and added to the fantasy element-- and, yes, I sadly agree that the story bringing the characters together acted and felt like plot device to...well, bring them together-- and hitmen were appearing out of nowhere...but, dude-- this isnt Casino Royal, where the plot elements need to tie together and give you a true sense of...well, you get the idea-- this was good fun-- and you said that it should have taken itself less seriously like xXx, because you feel that xXx worked better-- and who knows...maybe it did-- I enjoyed it on video just fine(xXx, that is) -- but I saw lots of humor in this film-- lots of elements that pointed to the fact that it was good action fun for the sake of having some good action fun-- I think that the problem lies, NOT with the fact that its source material is a game franchise, BUT that people have a pre-conceived idea of what they think it should be (in tone or content) either from playing the game, or being sold on the Trailer, which , of course, can lead you to believe anything to get you to buy a ticket... Aeon Flux sure burned me good in THAT department. Anyways, all that to say-- Ive seen action flicks that were really BAD that got way better reviews-- and I can live with the fact that I may like something that a lot of other people DONT-- but I think that this film has gotten more of a bad spin than it rightfully deserves... and a lot more people enjoyed it than you might think-- but dont hold it against me, i ate way too much today and I realy wanted to sit down for a while :)

But I am surprised that when you see Vin Diesel walk onto the screen you think "What a bad ass." Kind of nauseated by that sentiment actually.
I disagree Abominable Snowcone...

How can it really be homoerotic. Since their is only one human figure in the image and you already pointed out that the snake is positioned in a representation of the figures phallus I don't quite see any homoerotism. Though I won't argue that the image has a distinct masturbatory motif.
Wasn't that bad

C'mon guys, it was a good popcorn flick. Anyone walking into this expecting any different should have their head examined. Lots of shooting, cool scenes, and the chick (I kept thinking of Kirk's shapeshifter chick in The Undiscovered Country when I saw her) was smokin' hot. I did keep thinking, What happened to Seth Bullock's head? the whole time I was watching, but it was an okay movie all in all.
PS - I miss Deadwood
