With the TV show, they seemed to have to deal with various limitations that made them focus more on character, dialogue, plot, etc. while, in the comic books, that might take a back seat to a two-page splash of a flying dragon or whatever pops into the writer's head. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. Then again, it could work.

Calling these comic book runs 'seasons' is just fucking irritating. It reeks of not being able to let go of the TV series. I loved the Angel TV series as well, but in retrospect I'm glad it ended when it did instead of dwindling into mediocrity at the end like Buffy did. That series should've ended when she died. That would've been the greatest finale in TV history.

That's right, I didn't even think of that - although I didn't think they're literary in hell. Is it safe to assume that Buffy Season 8 and Angel Season 6 are in different continuities? Wouldn't Slayers INC. notice if L.A. turned into that? Or maybe it will be the twist at the end of the series. L.A. is still intact. It's Angel and the gang who disappeared into a hell dimension, where L.A. looks like this, they just don't know it.

Harold the Great: Its not clear exactly where Angel takes place in relation to Buffy. I think they are around the same time. Buffy take place a few months after Not Fade Away as does this comic, so I think Angel takes place around September 2004.

...that Angel Season 5 took place after Buffy had already ended, and featured Buffy Season 8-era Andrew and his division of Buffy's Slayer army turning up, as well as Angel and Spike visiting (the retconned) Buffy decoy in Rome as mentioned in Buffy S8. The LA in hell thing probably hasn't happened yet in Buffy S8, and I'm going to assume that Angel S6 covers LA's reintroduction to Earth and presumably the some kind of history/memory rewrite so the general populace doesn't know.

Joss has said that Buffy Season 8 takes place "a year and a half after Chosen", which would place it *after* Not Fade Away, like After the Fall. Its a pity it all isnt more clear, cos there is still confusion in the fandom as to when everything takes place

Just finished reading #1. Pretty good. I didn't quite see the ending coming, which is nice for a change. My only 3 complaints are 1) that most of the characters were reintroduced very quickly, 2)no Illyria or Spike(yet), and 3)the art fails to live up to Buffy excellence.

As far as complaint #1 goes... I pretty much expected quick reintroductions. This is a 12 issue run, unlike Whedon's planned 50+ issue season 6 for Buffy. I understand the need for compression in this Angel book. Just being a bitch about it really. =)

Gripe #2... No Illyria or Spike. Okay, again, pretty minor. We've just seen Spike in "Shadow Puppets" so I shouldn't be missing him that much. It's just that he's just such a good foil to the Batman wannabe Angel. As for Illyria, would've been nice to see her only to get her perspective on this "LA gone to Hell" stuff. Plus, it would've provided some more female representation. Seeing Gwen and Nina was nice, but no substitute for the likes of Illyria/Fred or Cordy. (Don't even say that she's dead. Nobody's permanently dead in sci-fi or fantasy. =) Really. )

Grip #3 is probably my only legit complaint. Team Buffy has thus far done an excellent job of keeping the action clear, the faces recognizable, and the definition crisp. Team Angel keeps the level of detail fairly high, but it's at the expense of crisp art or recognizable faces. (Don't mention likeness rights. I'm pretty sure that stuff was worked out before including these characters.) Sometimes, the Angel art borders on sketchy, almost like Leinel Yu's New Avengers work, but with a more goth tone.

Overall, the book is definitely a solid B or 3.5/5 stars. If the writing is consistently solid and the art tightens up a bit, the book could be a keeper. Now, if only we can get some our favorite Pylian... =)

It's a good distinction, as it's usually rare for non-Marvel or DC product to crack the top 10 on a consistent basis (the acclaimed Star Wars Legacy series is one of the few from Dark Horse to do so, off the top of my head).

is to get some resolution from the cliffhanger ending of season five. Still think that was cheap on Joss Whedon's part. But the art on these comics (talking Buffy here, too) is just a bad match for the type of storytelling they require. These guys can make pretty pictures, like the dragon over the city, but the battle scenes are poorly drawn and look like they've been inked with a Hershey bar.
Really though...

Excellent way to bring Wesley back. Vamp Gunn is going to be sweet. And I have to take the opposite stance on the art. I hate the art in Buffy, but I thought the Angel art was gorgeous. The characters actually look like the characters, unlike Buffy where only Buffy, Giles and Willow even slightly resemble their screen counterparts. (and yes, yes, I know that is on purpose. still bugs me a little). Side note: When they first started calling the new comics "Seasons," I thought it was pretty dumb. But the more people that bitch about it, the more I want to refer to them as seasons.

Marketing gimmick. I'm baffled as to why it's hard to understand why they would label them as such. It's to draw the fans of the shows in to a continuing mythology of the series.

I got my copy, and am over the moon. I love it! Everything about it is perfect. I feel so bad for Angel. It did NOT go well for him did it! Things look really bleak right now. I'm sure our heroes will find away out...but not for 12 issues;) I am glad he is still fighting and trying to do good. He has to doesnt he. I cant wait to see what this year has in store for him. It wont be easy, but I know he has a plan. Hope it goes better though! I'm glad I was right about Wesley - it fits in perfectly with the mythology of the show i.e. Holland Manners, Lilah et al. So so sad though. Im sure he must be mad at Angel - and I can see quite a bit of mistrust from both sides. And Gunn....poor Gunn. So sad. I cant express how sad I am for him. But man is is great story telling! Looking forward to seeing how that plays out. And what is he going to do with those glowing balls?...and what does Angel know about them? Its strange how I can be excited and jazzed, with so much bad things having happened to our gang. Just glad to have them back I suppose. There is going to be major events happening. And I cant wait till next month!

Wes is back by the fifth page or so. funny. I like how Buffy 8 opened on a light note, well everything turned out relatively well for everybody, at Angel 6 the gang is in the shittiest state conceivable.

...the comic has a lot more edge to it than the Buffy comics. I love the Buffy stuff and am buying them but the Angel first issue just amazed me. LA is in a bad way and the characters being introduced are very nice to look at. I like the art a lot and I hope the quality holds. I have always, as much as I love them, had a little prob with the scoobies, in that they have caused problems because of their own exclusionary habits. Sad considering. Angel who I believe is always one small step from acting like the monster he is does, when he is souled, understand his mistakes and the effects those mistakes have on other people. I hope Spike shows up soon because frankly all glower, which is Angel, needs a balance.

I enjoyed the story, but have a hard time getting past the lame art. You think with this high profile a title they would pull in some talent on the art side. Looks like they're going for an epic tale, but the amature hour art is going to make it a hard sell..

Maybe so... but last time I checked (I never have) AICN was the type of website that catered to the type of people who would know that BBS leaked this week and these same types are the type who need to type their mixed feelings after watching it.
