That tells us how America has become one big Haliburton-run concentration camp? What a bunch of fear mongering nonsense.

considering this was made more than 20 years before 9-11 I think your post is nonsense. It's great to see that there are still ignorant people like you that help make this country SO great. Nothing like loving a country that treats it's people like shit (except if you are rich) goes to war for non-existant reasons, and is destined to fall sooner or later. Good luck.
Great Interview

Had some cool insights into the making of the Mist there Capone. Man between you, Moriarty and Massawyrm, who needs Harry anymore? What a bunch of crap about Shawn Ryan though. If the fucking union can't seem to budge an inch on something like that, my respect for their cause just went down the toilet. Even when you win, you can't win these days.

Well, I read the story when I was a wee tot, so I'm familiar with the source material. I only reacted that way because Capone and FD explicitly said this was a message movie that had a particular intent given their (slanted) view of current events. That said, I'll see the film, because I can hopefully overlook the anti-Christian bigotry and Department of Homeland Security straw bogeyman allusions enough to enjoy the monsters and sci-fi paranoia. The Thing is one of my faves, so I hope there is enough of that vibe going on to overcome the patronizing left wing After School Special preachy-ness.
Great interview, Capone.

...don't blame the union. Shawn Ryan would be perfectly entitled to walk back on to the set as a *producer*, as long as he doesn't do any *writing*. Him refusing to cross the picket line is entirely his own choice, according to his own conscience. 'Tis a shame though. If I worked on that show I'd have to suggest throwing the wrap party on the picket line for him.
well you keep thinking that way

it's not Anti-Christian by the way. Some people are nuts, just look at the Westboro assholes, doesn't mean it speak for all Christians. Since you can't get past the fact that you will see this as a reaction to the state of the world, I guess you can call Mrs. Camody a characterization of Bush, because after a disaster, he freaks out, goes after the wrong people, and makes sure a lot of innocent people die because of his bullshit cause
I respect your point

and I recognize that there are some genuine nuts out there in every walk of life. But, it's tiresome and creatively lazy that King has spent his whole career depicting Christians as crazies. It's like I wrote 25 novels and populated them consistently with Jewish characters who... um, fill in whatever negative stereotype you like. It would be bigoted and dumb. So, the Carmody character, while she certainly may exist out there in the real world, would be a one in a million nutjob. If she was depicted that way, I'd have no beef. But, it's apparent that she "represents" Christianity in this flick and is almost immediately surrounded by willing followers. (At least I think so) Compare this fantasy with the reality that most Christians (as well as most Athiests) are ethical people and I find it very hard to suspend disbelief and enjoy that facet of the movie. As for Bush, he sure as Hell ain't perfect. But, time will tell if his decisions about the war were the right ones. In many ways, it depends on who you ask. If you ask an Iraqi woman who can now walk out of her home wearing the clothes she wants to wear and not fear being summarily executed or imprisoned, you might get one answer. If you ask a blogger who never leaves his home by choice and thinks the freedoms of American citizens have been curtailed (though his ability to freely dissent without ANY repercussions clearly refutes that assertion), you'd get a different answer. All I know for sure is no major terrorist attacks in the US = win. Anyone that doesn't get that needs to dial up some beheading videos and appreciate the reality of what civilization is up against. Just my opinion of course.

One-as for christian nut-jobs, I really don't think King has been using them as much as you say. I've been reading his stuff since I was a kid and I really don't see where you are coming from. I mean look at The Stand, The Green Mile, The Diamond and the Begger (short story)I think in more stories he pictures christians in a good light. I think your point about the Iraqi women is off base, now they have to worry about being getting killed in a suicide bombing, or an IED blowing up in their face, the terrorists who DID attack us are still out there because oops we attacked the wrong country. We haven't had another attack in our country yet. But while we waste trillions of dollars in a war that won't end, we have people like Iran and North Korea that have time to build nuclear weapons and can attack us because our manpower is rapidly depleting. All the while, the poor people of this country are consistenly shit on by this administration. It's like hey, we will up minimum wage to 7 dollars but we will increase everything else so we don't lose anything. Hell, look at the treatment our soldiers get. Shitty healthcare, shitty armor, and forced to go back to Iraq over and over again. What a great system right?
I could see that

you may be right on about King. But, I think he's evolved and grown a bit. While Carmody, Carrie's mom and many others were wild caricatures of reality and quite unrepresentative, not all Christian characters in King's latest works have been so lazily one dimensional. Maybe he's learned a little nuance as he's grown older. I just got finished reading Wolves of the Calla and Pere Callahan is a tortured and conflicted ex-priest whose depiction is both sympathetic and realistic. And just as a general retort about America: It's a great place. Why the hate? The poor here have DVR's, cell phones and jobs if they want one. Poor people in some other countries either starve or work at the point of a bayonet. So, while I deplore their inability to afford Starbuck's, I think America's poor have it quite good (relatively speaking) and have an opportunity to improve their lot in life that I would put up against any country in the world. Oh and IED's? You *do* know that US soldiers, Newt Gingrich or Rush Limbaugh don't plant the IED's or bomb night clubs correct? Read the article about the progress in Iraq that was printed in the New York Times earlier this week. Iraqis know that the bombers plaguing their country are, for the most part, foreign agitators, who do not wish peace and self determination for Iraq. One Iraqi woman was quoted as saying that her middle class neighborhood has not only become safe after the US troop surge, but that her husband is able to drive between Sunni and Shiite parts of town without worrying any more. Now, I'm a realist and I know the military and administration may include individuals who are not pure of heart. (There have been abuses and I won't deny them, as isolated and unrepresentative as they may be.) But, one cannot deny that the US, personified by the brave soldier on the ground, is making a huge sacrifice in time, money, political capital and blood that will hopefully allow a country of strangers to live without tyrrany. Taken by itself, that is a selfless act that does us credit. If it has a side effect of creating a bulwark against terrorism that's half way across the globe, more the better. Beyond the conspiracy theories, THAT is the goal of Bush's Iraq policy. If it yields fruit for the next 50 years, he's a genius. If not, he's a colossal failure. At this point, we just don't know.
