...this movie is going to be a hard sell... i don't think the fake background/blue screen thing is going to help... ditko, kurtzman... already the comic book injoking is getting annoying... BLACK SUIT??? not blue?... hair slicked back? miller is the last comic book writer i'd want to see doing this movie... it needs the tone and the action of the first Indiana Jones movie to even have a chance at being successful... Miller's idea of "humor" is not going to work here... he better not shit on the spirit like he shit on batman in his stupid "goddam batman" comics
I hope this doesn't end up like THE SHADOW..

Or even THE PHANTOM (a movie which I enjoyed in a way but wouldn't ever watch again). I like Frank Miller as much as the next geek but can he direct this? And is this Macht guy a good actor (I haven't seen any of his other movies).

Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed on this one. Could go either way really.

The suit is meant to be black, it's blue appearance is the result of the inability to effectively print large areas of black in the early strips. By all accounts, any time a character in the script describes the Spirit's attire, they talk about him wearing black.

But she's a worthless actress. Seriously, is Frank Miller so blinded by a sweet piece of ass that he'd ignore the complete lack of talent in ANY movie she's ever been in. It's a shame Rosario Dawson is booked until about 2010, 'cause she'd kick ass in a role like this.

I'm sorry if I came across as whiny. I certainly didn't mean to. I've just noticed a radical difference in how the reports play out and my enjoyment of being on a set is. I mean, isn't it more interesting for you guys to read a unique report or one that regurgitates the same experience as 10 other sites? I've gotten some great interviews because I've turned down roundtables and I've gotten great set experiences to share with you guys because I've turned down 4 out of 5 big group visits.

If it really isn't important to you guys, let me know. I just figured you would want something different.

You would never get this type of intimate contact on a group field trip of the movie. The cast and crew would be too guarded. And on group field trips you would never build relationships that give this site it's rare moments of brilliance.

This site's stubborn eschewing of any role but Movie Geek has yielded BNAT exclusives, WalterB and Stallone QA's; even summoned Demon Dave from wherever hell is these days.

What I wouldn't give to get ahold of some of Miller's storyboards for this. As they were good friends, I doubt Miller would 'ruin' this for Eisner. And for what it's worth, Miller's All Star Goddamn Batman is the most unique, refreshing take on the character since... well, Dark Knight Returns.

...if you were but one amongst a herd of journalists. Hard to be the center of attention that way, so I see your point. I'm just giving you a hard time Quint. I understand what you're getting at, but this is the type of shit you keep out of your articles. Of course you would prefer an exclusive set visit, not only for the chance of an exclusive article but for a more personal tour of the set and interaction with the cast guaranteeing that your article is of extra interest to those following the film. But how did you think it was going to come off to not only your readers but your journalist colleagues? Exclusive sets visits are great to read. Whining that they can't all be exclusive set visits not so much.

First off Quint, I WANT TO THANK YOU for turning down the junket trip. AICN started this movie-web-reportage and you guys deserve honors now and then like this. Obviously, the studio thought the site was still important. Fanboys too often overlook good journalism (the cliche horror!) and exclusive insight for the next tasty crumb falling down the info latter. That said, I was let down by this report because it was too technical/objective. I didn't feel like you were impressed with what you saw on set, was that the case? If not, maybe you should bring up films like The Shadow and The Phantom and tell us why you think The Spirit looks different/better - just based on first impressions from your visit of course. This movie is already extremely vague, so we definitely need your take on it. I feel like this report left stuff to be deserved - the pat from Eva was cool, but what about the movie? There's a lot at stake here and you've been on enough sets to probably development a sixth sense. Please let us know more specific opinions in the talkbacks. And thanks again for playing a little hardball, it is appreciated and helps out both the site and us loyal readers.

Sorry, but seniority still accounts for something, even on the web. AICN revolutionized film writing and brought the fans and movies closer together, as well as bringing many films into development by AICN's writers' sheer enthusiasm. There are a lot of decent movie sites on the web and there are also too many who regurgiate the same fucking press releases and add their own two-cents of snark b/c they lack any exclusives or intelligent/enlightening insight. Harry Knowles and these guys are the only ones who deserve a goddamn book written about them IMO. And I think they definitely deserve to visit a set by themselves now and again. Round table journalism blows, it's pure and simple. Just because AICN is Internet doesn't mean they deserve any less treatment than Roger Ebert. They are the only movie site that plays on that level currently. Pay your respects. I know Quint might not agree, but he's humble and that's another reason why AICN is where it's at. Moriarty is a cocky bastard when he wants to be though. ;)

AICN helped usher in the entire geek era of filmmmaking, from LOTR to the comic explosion to Kill Bill. Their writing, while not flawless and based more on punctuality and geekism-influence than literary-prowess,made every other old media film critic take notice and actually fear for their jobs. They won't admit it but its true. Back in the heyday of the super spoiler, Hollywood was scared shitless, and now primarily because of AICN, Hollywood plays by the scoop-tactics of the net and promotes films years in advance. How many times have you checked AICN over the last 10 years compared to EW.com? Not to mention, AICN's Talkbacks have influenced many a movie and movie star, with Bruce Willis, Kevin Smith and Sly Stallone coming to mind. You can knock the chaotic nature of the Talkbacks, and with so many forums on other movie sites, it's easy to forget who started it, but in the end this site is "revolutionary." That kind of snobbish "it's not the NY Times" remark reeks of Internet bias and isn't fair to begin with. AICN is a DIY operation (look at the wallpaper for chrissakes that hails back to the original version of the site) and in journalism today, we need as many of those as we can get. I'm not saying I agreed with Knowles' Blade 2 review or King Kong or Enchanted even, but can you name another memorable Blade 2 review? I'm sure del toro remembers that one fondly, but Peter Traver's? Not so much. AICN is practically an institution, and I don't know why, but we read Harry's articles on marriage and being sick. Would you do the same for AO Scott? That's all from me, I'm getting queasy. Hah. But again, Quint deserves to visit a set by himself now and again, especially when David Poland gets to do those stupid "video lunches".

Not sure how many here are really into the genre, but noir is really Frank's ballgame. I hope he knocks this one out of the park. Something I'd really love for him to sink his teeth into would be a remake of Terry & The Pirates.

"Just because AICN is Internet doesn't mean they deserve any less treatment than Roger Ebert. They are the only movie site that plays on that level currently." So, you say Ain't it Cool News deserves as much respect from Hollywood and everyone in it as Roger Ebert's earned in thirty years of Pulitzer Prize winning analysis? I admire Harry and Drew, and respect every other one of the team that reports the Cool News and puts it online here for us every day now for 11 years, and counting. But I think that any of them would say that what Roger Ebert's done to show for three decades of film reportage (compared to their collective one) is beyond what this site has or ever will accomplish, and when you come down to it, is fundamentally different in purpose anyway. So let's not embarass them, or ourselves, with half-cocked grandiosity from straight out of our windy assholes.

Thanks, Quint! That was fun to read. The cast and crew banter and descriptions of sets 7 and 8 were appreciated.

I'm not always sold on Eva Mendes as an actress, but she's got a wily sense of humor, a fabulous body, and a friendly way about her. I'm looking forward to seeing her in "The Spirit."

And Frank Miller wants to keep directing? More power to him.
