From the first glimpses this has looked great. I loved Ratatouille and i've liked to one degree or another all the Pixar films (although Toy Story, Incredibles and Ratatouille are my faves) but this just looks out of the park great. Love the concept, love the reported lack of dialogue in the first half, love the design. Give it up DWA, 2008 belongs to Pixar!

I have to agree with wadi77 above. He does look like an E.T. rip-off. At the very end of the teaser trailer, you hear someone, presumably him, say "Wall-e". Sounds so much like E.T. Pixar has one of the most inventive teams in the industry. They can do better than clone a classic.

CG Animated Movie Plot...
by ZeroCorpse
Nov 19th, 2007
10:25:59 AM
_____ is a member of a group/species/community of similar things/beings that longs to be more than just another member of that group.

Through some sort of unexpected adventure, ______ (and the audience) discovers that there's more to themself than meets the eye, and realizes they are special or different in some way that makes them not like the group they belong to.

A bad guy seeks to hurt _____'s chance at breaking out/new friends/family, and so ______ must use special talents (because none of the friends have these special talents) and innovation (because few of the friends can even innovate) to rescue them from the villain's evil plans.

Along the way, _______ makes some new friends in strange places, and these new friends DO have special talents and are each unique in their own way. With the help of the new friends, ________ defeats the villain, and then tells his/her original family/clan that he/she is different and special and introduces the new, sometimes scary friends to the family/clan.

Then Smashmouth's "Rock Star" starts playing (or some sickly Randy Neuman song) and everybody lives happily ever after in their new life (until the TV series starts and blows off the film's ending).

This applies to Bugs, Ants, Toy Story, Ratatouille, or just about ANY CG animated film in the past decade or so.

Summary: "I'm unique", "I'm outcast", "I've got new friends", "I've got to rescue my clan", "What makes me unique also makes me special", "awww."

Form, Now Function
by HyphenatedWords
Nov 19th, 2007
10:31:06 AM
While the little chap may be derivative of old favorites, let us understand that Johnny 5 and E.T. were in different leagues, as could Wall-E be. The way Pixar as consistently surprised me, even with the films I'm not "crazy" about, is they way they exceed our expectations and offer something that we haven't seen before -- no matter how jaded we are, no matter how fiercely we enter the theater with the resolve to not enjoy it. "Cars" shouldn't have worked for me. I don't *like* cars. I don't *like* racing. But I'll be damned. I went and had a great time at the movies. With a template character like Wall-E (he's supposed to look cookie-cutter, after all), I think the Pixar team has the opportunity to pour their all into it, like a master with a blank canvas. Let's forgive the form and wait for the function. How will this film *work*? Then we can cast dem stones.

"Quality will Out."

That's why Pixar gets a free pass - because their stuff is so heads and tails better than anybody else. If you think that the last few outings have been "nothing great," then fine, but you've got to concede that Pixar's "nothing great" is 1000% better than ANYTHING Dreamworks, Warner's, Fox, etc., is doing.

We gush over Pixar because they're almost single handedly keeping animation alive in the public eye - as an art form, anyway.

Without Pixar, people would think that Shrek and Bee Movie are as good as animated movies could be. What a horrible thought.

To sum up:

PIXAR!

by ZeroCorpse
Nov 19th, 2007
11:21:09 AM
Rat is different from other rats. He's separated from them (variation on outcast). Has adventures. Makes new friend. Discovers he's "special". Defeat villain to save his new friend.

All that was missing from the formula is "Rock Star" playing at the end.

Oh, and I forgot part of the CG animated formula: The ego-trip. At one point, the main character gets an ego-trip and turns on his friend(s) only to realize later that he was being a jerk, thus learning a lesson about his "specialness" having limits.

I swear, all these movies are like proletariat propaganda.

Ratatouille was stunning animation.

The same folks who don't want Rambo or John McClane to do anything but kick some a** are lamenting that Pixar is using a formula for telling its stories that dates back to, well, the beginning of story telling. Even if they follow that format, they are head and shoulders above a)the refinement of the story and b)the presentation of the story. That alone is enough to catapult them to the top of the heap for their genre. Gotta give them props for what they provide. Without Toy Story, Dreamworks Animation, Sony Animation, et. al. wouldn't even be here (I know, maybe that would be a blessing!)

Plot & story wise, not so much (too many shots of the rat rapturously smelling food), but it was probably the best looking flick they've done (next to Incredibles - oh snap, there's Brad Bird again!). And if I can get over Cloverfield monster being Sin from Final Fantasy X, then I can get over Wall-E being Johnny 5/E.T. At least it'll be better than Cars. That was sub-Shark Tale shit there.

I thought Ratatouille was good, not great. Certainly the animation quality was genius. The story and theme, however, were not really my cup of tea. The writing was good but I wished there was more humor. I liked Toy Story more, it was funny throughout. Didn't some guys from Pixar recently say they were going to break out of the mold in the future and start making some different types of adult films? Maybe photo-realistic cg pornos?

I think The Incredibles was clearly an homage to past superheroes, made by someone obviously loves the genre and grew up with it. Just as Iron Giant was a playful twist on those 50's robot/monster/alien attack movies. And yeah, I too am astounded by people who hate Pixar. There's no modern studio with a better track record. I like your formula, Zerocorpse. But if it's that easy, why is it that when studios OTHER than Pixar follow it, the films turn out so mediocre (Antz, Shark Tale, Robots, Shrek 2, 3, . . .)? Pixar must have something going for it beyond being able to play Plotline Mad Libs, otherwise their stuff would be as uninspiring as Dreamworks'and Fox.
