Burton has been consistently disappointing for a while now. Sweeney Todd looks like it could very much be the return to form that we all want it to be, but if it isn't then it's a sign of a larger problem. I'm not getting excited about anything on paper until I get tangible evidence to be excited.

His best films are Beetlejuice, Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands and, to an extent, Nightmare Before Christmas. Quit with all this Batman, Willy Wonka, Planet of the Apes crap. Stop playing in other people's playgrounds and trust your own one more often!
Don't do it Tim, don't go performance capture
by filmcoyote
Nov 16th, 2007
04:41:51 AM
Am I seriously the only one who thinks performance capture largely sucks? It's fine (and i hpoe this is Burton's intention) when it's a small, realistically used effect in a live action setting - like Gollum or Kong - but these movies like Polar Express and Beowulf are horrible to look at with there dead-eyed emotionless botoxed-looking faces and jerky unrealistic movement. Burton going the Zemeckis route would be hideous. However if, as i suspect of him, he'll be using it in Gollum way - maybe to render the rabbit or cheshire cat - only, that'll be okay. Oh, and Beowulf sucks, don't waste your money on this film: laughable dialogue, ugly animation, one good sequence after 90 minutes of eye-rolling crap. Don't say i didn't warn you.

Man, Is He Ever Going To Fuck Up Wonderland

Burton is a punk; a punk I don't like nor trust with this material. Wonderland has been done properly twice already, so why another go (besides the obvious: Disney is the Devil and Burton ran out of ideas when Mars Attack didn't produce the numbers he wished)? I'm actually a little angry about this, which is sad.

They KILLED the 1999 TV version by transforming it into a "self-improvement" fable, where every character/scenario Alice encountered taught her a charming lesson about confidence and "believing in herself", thus giving her the self-esteem to perform at a music recital. This is EXACTLY the sort of storytelling Lewis Carroll was gleefully lampooning with the "Alice" books -- where the morality-teaching, lesson-based logic of Victorian children's tales was turned on its head (and spun around dizzily for good measure)! It is essential that any "Alice" adaptation capture this crucial element of the books' tone. (The Disney version, for example, may have played fast and loose with Carroll's text, but it captured the topsy-turvy, nonsensical spirit of the books marvellously.) Missing that -- turning Alice into conventional lesson-based children's entertainment -- is as big a mistake as doing "Wind in the Willows" as a primarily slapstick comedy (it's been done), or making Dr. Watson the bumbling comic relief in a Sherlock Holmes story (also done, thank you Nigel Bruce). Burton has a fantastic opportunity to make something wonderful here, if he can only avoid this pitfall. And while I love many of Burton's films, his shoehorning of the Christopher Lee/Wonka's Father subplot into "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" does not give me confidence on this score.

I think either Paul Reubens or Jack Nicholson. Both Burton regulars, and both haven't appeared in a Burton movie in almost a decade. I think either will be good. And Depp as the Mad Hatter would be brilliant. Although he won't have to strech from his Willy Wonka, just a little less deadpan.

A Burton version of Alice actually sounds good
by Zorak5

07:44:42 PM
Alice in Wonderland has been retold on screen so many times, in both animation and live action, that a new, possibly darker, Burtonesque version actually sounds like a really good idea. I love the story. If Burton can bring his style to it, and bring some good actors along with him, then great.

You know what else I'd like to see? A Burton version of Wizard of Oz. Helena Bonham Carter as the Wicked Witch of the West. Johnny Depp as the Scarecrow. Christopher Walken as the Wizard. XD

Style? Good Actors? What Else Does Burton Have?

Really? I'm asking. Because I don’t know anymore. Post ‘Mars Attacks’ I see an unfortunate change in Burton’s artistic credibility. Some people don’t care about that nonsense (namely Burton, Disney and Infants) but others do (least credible: Myself) and over the last ten years some of us have been getting the feeling that watching his films is a lot like standing in a barn, observing one mighty fine cash-cow. I think Burton has become a strapped-for-creativity old man who’s fabulous crew make it appear that his exhausted imagination is still able to produce and command an audience. Hey, I hope it’s great (it’s not as though it is an impossibility) but the likely is that Mr. Deep & Company will be unable to restrain and focus an over-loaded laundry machine set to the ego-wash cycle. Hey, then again, it’s only Disney’s money he’s pissing on and there’s nothing wrong with screwing The Satan Almighty: Bringer of Annoying Damnation once and a while.

Tim Burton is an over the hill, over-rated hack who has been given way too much freedom in recent years. "Beetlejuice" and "Edward Scissorhands" were both genius (helped enormously by d.p. Barry Sonnenfeld). "Mars Attacks" was hilarious, but I think it was Burton who was laughing the hardest. But that ape thing and that chocolate factory debacle were awful. Keep him away from "Alice in Wonderland" or "Alice Through the Looking Glass". Let a director with real vision (Gilliam) have a go at it: at least he'll respect the source. Failing that, I'd rather let a journeyman like Peter Hyams have a crack at this. Anybody but Burton. The guy gets to sleep with Helena Bonham Carter; that should be enough wish-fulfillment for one man.
