IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME: ACTION DIRECTORS, The most important "secret" to making an action movie that is successful, especially a kung-fu flick, is to film a scene for the trailer that the audience has never seen before. A scene that will get audiences talking in the theater and out of it. ALL ANYONE CARES ABOUT FROM THIS MOVIE IS JET LI FIGHTING JACKIE CHAN, NOT FUCKING HORSES RUNNING IN WATER AND 80 FIGHTS THAT REMIND ME OF BALLERINAS AND MAKE ME WANT TO FALL ASLEEP. Even if Jackie and Jet don't fight in this movie, you should have filmed a scene for the trailer where they do. And if that's too goddamn much to ask, then show us something that blows our mind, if only for a split second. Show us a guy kung-fu fighting a bear or some shit. Enough with the "magic staff" bullshit. Show us a guy being hung by a noose but still fighting off villains and trying to get free. Or a guy fighting off warriors using a torch like a staff. THIS TRAILER IS BORING. SAME OLD CROUCHING TIGER Style. Give me two seconds that make me go "wow" then cut to black. I don't need to see every fight in the movie. YOU ARE OVERCOMPENSATING. Is their insistance that their whole Marvel Universe timeline was started a mere 13 years ago, so some 40+ years of continuity all gets compressed into starting back in the '90s. I just don't buy it. I'd buy 20 or so years ago, but not 13. Too much stuff happened between now and then. But people don't want to see their heroes age, so hence. I think it'd be cool to let the universe evolve, not real time of course, but something of a compressed timeline would be okay, let the stories evolve, and there's plenty of alternate realities that they could use to have the characters the way people grow up remembering them. I know this all extremely geeky, but screw it.

Suddenly I don't need to see this movie, it seems I already have. Anyone else into Hong Kong movies can add ones I've missed. But let me point out the obvious ones. Jackie Chan drunk, is obviously stolen from Drunken Master, the badass sword-chick with the white hair is obviously stolen from Brigitte Lin in "the Bride with White Hair." White Kid and hot Asian chick from "Karate Kid 2". Teahouse fighting scene from "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon." In fact most of the visuals stolen from Crouching Tiger or one of the visual knock-offs that soon followed like Hero (see the Breakdancing monk shot and remember the Donnie Yen fight in Hero), or the falling leaves scene (think Ziyi Zhang and Maggie Cheung in Hero). Did I miss any other obvious ones? This is why white guys shouldn't direct Kung Fu movies, they bring nothing original to them.

His choice in material for himself is awful lately, but whenever he shrugs and does a "family" movie for the paycheck - it turns out really damn well. AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS is the closest he ever got to capturing the vibe of his HK stuff, and this looks very nice. Those quick to bash the director as a poor choice, as I was, pause and think for a second. He's done epic (THE LION KING) and balls-out action (the ROGER RABBIT shorts) - he might not be a bad choice at all. His animation background ensures he's got at least some visual sense, and that YouTube footage would back that up. Jet and Jackie may shrug it off as a not-particularly faithful version of a beloved story, but this isn't aimed at fans of classic Chinese literature, it's aimed at American kids who've never read JOURNEY TO THE WEST. And for an American kids movie, it looks damn nice.

If you want to see some straight up powerhouse acting, just watch Stephen Chow completely inhabit the role in Jeff Lau's A CHINESE ODYSSEY (split into two films in post-production). Not the most faithful adaptation, and really confusing at times to the uninitiated - but Chow is so good here I can't even describe it without lapsing into cliche. Plenty of Oscar-winning Best Actors never give a performance as good as Chow's Monkey King in their entire careers. It's that good a performance.

I can acknowldege all of that and still make my point. And in fact I do. But when you see Jackie Chan stumble up the steps with that bottle, is it not almost an exact scene out of Drunken Master? And have you ever seen Bride with White Hair? That's almost an exact copy of her signature move from that movie? No shit Wuxia didn't begin with Crouching Tiger, but there are still original things you can do with it. All I am asking for is a little originality in the movie. But hey, that's ok, if you want more of the same old thing, then you go ahead and love the hell out of this movie. I want something badass that I haven't seen before, like the first time you saw John Woo's The Killer, or Jet Li's Once Upon a Time in China, or Bruce Lee in just about anything he did. The problem is that Crouching Tiger did well, so that's the style everyone is copying. And to make matters worse, there is an American Director who directed Stuart F-ing Little who probably doesn't know Hong Kong cinema from his own ass, who probably sat down with a stack of DVD's and said, we can do this, and stole the best and most original ideas from them and just threw them into this movie. Seriously, if you couldn't play "count the movies these scenes were stolen from" I seriously question your knowledge of these movies. No duh these movies aren't the first, but arguably they were the most recent, and biggest of each genre (such as sword-fighting, mixed form, Wuxia, etc.) and even a rip off from the last really popular US martial arts film, the Karate Kid. (And please don't quote Segal, Van Damme, or any of that Matrix crap, they don't count.) And that this dofus who directed this threw in a kid who looks like Kirk freaking Cameron doesn't make it any more promising. So yeah, you got your comment up, way to show how little you know. Go back to watching "So-Close" or "City-Hunter" in your basement and talking to your Chewbacca toy about how much you think you know.

Half the time Jackie will take his Hollywood blood money, go back to Hong Kong, and make something as bad as anything Hollywood could dream up for him. ROB-B-HOOD (coming soon from Dragon Dynasty) is his best Hong Kong film in a good while - and it's OK, no better. Jackie Chan has great taste in material that he produces but doesn't appear in. When it comes to what actually makes for a good Jackie Chan movie he's far less reliable. This thing already looks better than ROB-B-HOOD, which is way too cutesy and quite overlong considering the lightweight material. Hopefully his official return to directing, OPERATION CONDOR/ARMOUR OF GOD III, will be significantly better than the stuff he's been churning out in Hong Kong lately.

How dare he not understand the appeal of mediocre movies made in a language he barely speaks, directed by someone of Brett Ratner's caliber. I don't understand the appeal of RUSH HOUR any more than Jackie does, and I'm American. No, it's far better if he'd just take the checks and lie through his teeth about how awesome RUSH HOUR 3 is. That shows a lot more respect to the fans.

Any reservations I had about this film are gone and now I can't wait to see it. It's obvious from this that Minkoff was the right guy and with help from Yuen Wo Ping and Peter Pau he's made a Monkey King movie with teeth and heart. The kid is Michael Angarano, who was in a film that played at Sundance called Snow Angels by David Gordon Green.
