When was the last GREAT Trek movie? Much as I enjoyed 5, I'd have to say 4 - Voyage Home. Since then, nothing much to write home about. Yeah, including FIRST CONTACT, which was watchable, but not classic. This has to be seen for sheer car-crash movie value. Pathfinder for McCoy, Shaun of the Dead for Scotty, fucking Sylar for Spock, the hottest Heather (Veronica Sawyer!!!) for Spock's Mom, who-the-fuck? for Kirk, old fart Greenwood for Pike - only Eric Bana as the villain piques my interest. At least if the pic that's up at darkhorizons.com is any indication. It shows Winona as a VULCAN. Now maybe the pic has been doctored or maybe it's from another movie (anyone know?), but Spock's mom (as Herc notes) is HUMAN not VULCAN. Therefore, she CANNOT have pointy ears and the arched eyebrows. Unless she's trying to "pass." ;) If the pic is right and she's a Vulcan, I'd bet she's T'Pring, not Amanda Grayson. Yes, I caught a glimpse of it. I saw that part I mentioned above, and another where a mischievous Kirk experiments with a transporter to beam himself into man-warrior position behind a nude supine akimbo Winona. That's right--Kirk seduces Spock's mom. I mean, if you can call blunt force trauma "seduction." By the way, I'm sending Natalie Portman over to your place when she's done waxing my car.

I'm not seeing this now. Ryder sucks, and there's no way in hell she's going to be good as Spock's mom. That role requires an actress that can express warmth, and Ryder is as cold as a corpse in everything she's ever done. Did the casting director think Spock's mom was Vulcan instead of human?

Seriously...Star Trek was scripted by crap-meisters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, kings of bland, silly action, no-character cinema. The film will suck, no matter who stars in it because it's rotten at the source. The Island? Crapfest Transformers? Etc...I rest my case.

Yahoo may be rehashing incorrect information as it directly quotes the Variety article. This casting decision makes me way more angry than the previous ones, and they made me really angry. If she is to play a Vulcan, then JJ is really the asshole that I think he is. Spock's entire character stems from the fact that he's constantly at odds with himself. A Human/Vulcan hybrid who grew up with Vulcans but lives with Humans. That's what makes Spock cool. On the other hand, Winona has been on my spank list since Lucas, and seeing her in a Star Trek movie is like a geeky wet dream come true. Dammnit, I am totally conflicted on this one.

At least Sean Connery LOOKED old enough to be Harrison Ford's dad even though they were just six years apart. Oh wait, maybe they're just not going to put make-up on Ryder. Poor girl hasn't been living right after all. What's Abrams smoking, and is it nice? Disappointing as Superman Returns was, I really think we dodged a bigger bullet when Abrams's script wasn't used.

The casting so far is making me cringe. I don't mind Wynona and I think she's hot, but Spock's mom? You've got to be kidding. When Kirk and Spock are visiting the Sareks Wynona is going to be there handing out the sandwiches? I'd rather see her cast as a the Orion Slave Dancer. That would be better casting; Wynona slithering around in green paint... that's making the voices go away.
