The original fx actually looked better when it came to ships in space. The planet surfaces were what needed upgrading.

I realize this would have been ridiculously expense and probably impractical. However, how cool would it have been to get Shatner and Nimoy as they are now, put them in the old uniforms, reshoot the dialogue and digitally insert them into the episode as the "old" Kirk and Spock?

Ill agree a few trek shots where nice, but most trek space shots where crap. They where good for their day thats for sure, almost cinema quality infact, but today? They look like Buck Rodgers serials from the 30's
