I mean, she's an all right actress, which is about all that's required from Rand, but it does nothing to excite me. And wouldn't Rand be about 13 in this movie anyway? Also---as I was skimming all I saw was "Nichols" and had a really bad flashback to Trek V. *shudder* no more feathers, grandma, no more!
Wait, isn't she ten years younger than Kirk?
by Ingeld
Nov 8th, 2007
02:51:31 PM
I always thought she was much younger than Kirk. She is a yeoman and hasn't made up the ranks. So, if this is about the early years of Kirk and Spock in their twenties then Rand must be what? 15 years old? Or do I have all the ages wrong?

it is trivial, unless you're a trekker's trekkie, which I am not. I've seen all ToS episodes at least once, and I don't recall that character. I don't imagine many 'regular' people would, either, with 'regular' meaning 'non-trekkies.' The bigger news would be, who plays my sweet chocolate nubian princess, Uhura.

Anybody who was anybody and everybody will all be together in classes at the academy or on the first missions. Starfleet probably hundreds of ships, but these 1o people are always stuck together. I hate that. Next, all the aliens will speak English fluently. The only way we will be able to tell them apart is where the alien bumps on their head will be.

That Janice Rand will be played by Rachel Nichols, when someone named Nichelle Nichols played Uhura, and someone named Christopher Pine is playing Kirk, successor to Christopher Pike. And now I hereby invite you to not be able to get the theme song to "Team America--fuck yeah!" out of your heads.

Isn't it a bit outdated to have a Captain's Yeoman as part of the crew? I know their official role is to serve meals and iron shirts but it's obviously they're there to provide EVERY need of the Captain a la Monica Lewinsky.

Spock has to go back and change history so that the original crew all come together sooner than in the series. That could be one way in which the timeline changes... And if any changes are made to the timeline, then Kirk could still be alive in Spocks future.

None of this makes a goddamned bit of sense. 1. Kirk was in his mid thirties..young for a captain but possible if your simply a bad ass. 2. Spock was Much older than anyone else..did not go to Star Fleet Academy with Kirk..remember MUCH older. 3. McCoy was in his 40s..logical if your a ships chief medical officer..they don't put newbies in that position today nor will then in the 23 century. 4. Checkov, rand, Sulu and Ohura were all in grade/high school when Kirk was at Starfleet. This new Trek sound like nothing but an Emo/O.C./ Gen Y pandering reboot. In what illogical world would anyone put a Starship on a scientific mission in the hands of a bunch of newbies? What could possibly be their mission given their age/experience? Save Jimmy Eats World from a group of Klingons from Silver Lake?

I think it's more likely she's Carol Marcus - no mater how many episodes Janice Rand was in, she didn't have nearly the same impact on canon that Carol did when her character appeared in Trek II. Kirk's departure on his 5-year mission played a major role in his relationship with Carol - and son David.

My excitement for this movie waned about a month ago...
by Negative Man
Nov 8th, 2007
04:16:00 PM

...Aside from an occasional casting choice, I've heard nothing worthwhile. My excitement would pick up some when we see some actuals stills of the cast in (hopefully) TOS-like costumes. I would get even more primed if we see and TOS-like Enterprise bridge. Though, I would wait for DVD if the costumes and Enterprise interior resemble that Bakula abortion with everything dabbed in bluish light...ugh!

Keep it bright and keep it light. That was one of the secrets of ST:TOS. Bold colors, straight forward characters, and fun stories. Even when dealing with politically charged issues they kept everything from getting too bogged down in serious drama. 'Let That Be Your Last Battlefield' was a terrific episode dealing with racial hatred that never went into todays over-dramatic deep end. I'm afraid that Abram's may dip too deep into the bad, trying too hard (I said it!) ALIAS/LOST drama he's known for. Then again, he's never overly impressed me. Alias lost me first season and Lost is only half (island) good.

And before the flaming begins, here's a few other J.J. products that left me dry... MI:III, WHAT ABOUT BRIAN, TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS (Yes...the one with James Belushi!), GONE FISHIN' (Pesci, Glover...crap in a hat.), and let's not forget...perhaps his most grievous of charges...Michael Bay's ARMAGEDDON!!!

Seriously people...the guy that wrote the script for Armageddon is writing and directing the Star Trek relaunch!!!

And people wonder why I'm so hesitant about this movie...

jeanluc Dickhard should be Jean-Luc Prickhard---funnier, and more consistency. whew. that being said, must JJ cast EVERY FRIGGIN ROLE THAT EVER EXISTED IN Star Trek? Let's see, we have, nonsenically, yeoman rand. Next up: Q, Trelane, Charlie X, Khan, Dr. Soong, Admiral Cartwright, Lt. Ilia, V-Ger, Christopher Pike, George Kirk and whatever else. This shouldn't be a kitchen sink movie. If JJ was wise, he'd be filming this movie like he films his series--as a series. Do a LOTR-type deal. I hope there' s at least some type of conceivably story arc going on here.
Their real ages...

Shatner, Whitney, Nimoy and Nichols are all within a year of each other. Kelly and Doohan are 10 years older, Takei and Koening are 6-7 years younger.

But this movie will still suck.

but here's some good news...
by captain_kirk
Nov 8th, 2007
04:43:35 PM
at least the movie will cost $5.50 from Wal-Mart shortly after the DVD release. It's hard to be excited when JJ's rewriting EVERYTHING. The problem is that Trek is not Battlestar Galactica, so a complete "reimagining" as Star Trek Babies just can't work in the face of 40 years of history. On the other hand, the cop out of having this be another "time fuck up" seriously undermines any sense of urgency or commitment to these characters. I personally would love to see an academy-era film take place, but look at what happens when Lucas put Darth Vader in a diaper. More of the same. Can hardly wait to see the reworked federation insignia.

No, let me be serious... I can't wait to finally get a chance to see star trek on screen for the first time in my life. I love the show, it's good cheesy fun, with some great intelligent questions about the human condition throughout. Over in the Pike TB I nominated Kristin Vangsness (Penelope Garcia on Criminal Minds) as Rand because the role calls for someone curvy and sexy. Someone else there came up with a better idea, though.

Mary Lynn Rajskub, the comic/actress who played Chloe on "Veronica's Closet" has the same pinched mouth and "please don't sexually objectify me" vulnerable pout that Whitney brought to the role. Rajskub for Rand - she looks the part.

Although since the film is being made in the post feminist era and not in the swinging sicties, I can see the logic in casting someone with no sex appeal in order to downplay the "captain's woman" angle of the role.

Next dreamcasting challenge: Majel Roddenberry played the voice of the starfleet computers on every Star Trek series and in every movie (yes, including the Enterrise series finale). If this is a total relaunch, breaking with all established continuity and past casting, who will they get with that authoritarian but reasonable, school-marmish matter of fact deadpan delivery? Personally, I think it sould be a mistake to not use Mrs. Roddenberry for this, but she is up in age so if they expect this to be a franchise relaunch they might want to find a new voice now for the sake of consistency.

Napoleon Park, you have a point.

Janice Rand had some CURVES and meat on her bones, like a real woman. This coat-rack needs to put on a few pounds so I can tell the difference between her and any 16-year-old boys that might wander onto the set.

Seriously Hollywood-- WOMEN HAVE CURVES! Stop taking the gay mens' opinion on what women are supposed to look like. The fashion designers and makeup artists are NOT the authority on beauty.
