The producers knew there was going to be a writers' strike, so they creatively pre-empted it by not getting any writers onboard this season. Explains everything.

Heroes season 2 hasn't screened in the UK yet but if all the reports of its slide in quality are correct, ending the season early with a hastily-cobbled together alt ending sounds like the perfect way to cap it.

Maybe this will end up being like the lackluster "mini-pod" of six episodes Lost had last season. Wrapping up this lame story arc and having a nice eight-month hiatus could give the Heroes writers a chance to seriously rethink the direction of their show and return on much stronger footing. Like most, I'm dissatisfied with the current season. Heroes' first half-dozen episodes were its strongest. If it can return to that quality, it can be a great show again. Maybe the writers could use a "time out." :-P

such fabulous stretches of imagination known as "Heroes"!

Sorry. I can't give this show much credit after the failure of the episodes leading up to and epitomized in the season one finale, and the utterly lackluster episodes that have followed with each episode since! Truth is, the writers seem to be quite justified in their requests. The market will dictate how many DVDs are sold in the future (I'm not imagining a lot for Heroes S2 as it stands). Now if only all the musicians out there can do the same thing and drop CD prices down to what they're worth ($6-$8 tops per unit with same residuals to the bands, less skim for the "generous" recording labels).

Unfortunately it's all about the ca$h, with creativity and innovation being the true victims of this $mackdown...

i don't think the situation is a bad as everyones making out, agreed it hasn't been that amazing this season, but i reckon they'l pull it back, theres still some potentially good stories been brewed. looking forward to peter and nathan meeting again, and nathans melted face alter ego. hiro coming back to the present. oh, and the producers actually figuring how to use green screen haha. its just down right terrible this year, can't remember the comping being that bad last season. but anyway, i have faith they'll get back on track. im still intrigued by it.

I remember all the crap Heroes fanboys gave Lost fans last year in the Lost talkbacks for being slow and taking forever to reveal anything while Heroes was quick and revealing every week. Lost fans of course said wait and see how well Heroes is doing in season 3. Well, what do you know, Heroes is just as lethargic as Lost was in the first half of season 3. And it's only the first quarter of season 2!

And his power isn't really flying but somehow he borrowed the power from Peter. Or maybe he's Peter and Nathan's hybrid clone....eww, about kissing Claire though. But at least he'd be more interesting. If this season ends this Fall the show has delivered one of the worst second seasons I could have imagined. Lame lame lame! The only show to be this frustrating in a second season for me was probably Alias--but that at least gave us a cool Lena Olin and came off of a good finale which Heroes did not.

yeah but season 3 of lost, had an awesome pay off at the end, and it made it worthwhile sticking it out for the slower times. which i think we need to do now for heroes. that said i still think they know what they're doing with lost, whilst heroes is clearly been made up as there going along. not that ive got a problem with that as such, it just means you can't look to deep into, cause its got contradictions left right and center. not a problem as long as its still entertaining i guess!

Because until last week, they definitely needed to clean house and start again. And we have to wait until the 19th before Hiro starts his manhunt for his father's killer? Crap.

Oh, and the first 6 episodes of LOST Season 3 were in no way "more compelling and entertaining television than the best HEROES has had to offer this season or last." Yes, the LOST team did a great 180 and turned things around brilliantly for Season 3, but be honest and don't act like those first six episodes weren't anything less than craptacular.

They must've been on strike during the writeup of that horribly, overhype, lackluster, piss poor season finale!

It amounted to the worse produced, poorly executed conslusion to any season finale that I've ever seen in my life!

And season two just took the cue from there and kept the ball rolling!

Yup, WGA should be glad because Heroes writers have been picketing for quite awhile now! Fans and non-fans saw the evidence but didn't realize it!

whats interesting about peter this series, is that despite the whole memory loss trick being a tiresome plot point, it could prove quite interesting to a character that is technically a walking super weapon, not to mention potentially a nuclear bomb. hes like jason bourne with an x-factor, and i think thats compelling. despite the fact that havent gone into the back story of the previous generation of heroes as i would have liked, the minuteman style photo of them all together really does interest me, i want to know more, and i do think we'll get there. after all, there are other people in that photo that haven't even been mentioned yet. Nathan is half melted two facey alter ego, im interested in where they're going with that aswell. is that his inner bad guy, or is that his guilt for what happened with peter. i agree, there not exactly plot points that have come to fruition yet, but i still think there worthy of 'keeping the faith', and not just turning on the show after so few episodes into the series. i dunno, im not trying to convince you otherwise, obviously your entitled to your opinion, just trying to explain why i still think the shows gonna deliver.

that things start to improve starting tonight. I know it's unlikely since you can't suddenly improve writing technique and get better dialog or get rid of adding awkward/silly/illogical setups or anything but at the very least maybe we'll get a ton of awesome geekiness. I would really hate to see a superhero show on prime time get canceled. Maybe the best bet would to let Season 2 end in Dec. and then have NBC hire some new writers to reboot the series (after the strike ends of course).

Sorry if this was mentioned in last week's talkback - I missed it and don't want to wade through all the Lost v. Heroes talk, or the "I'm done with this show" statements from people who'll post again this week - but isn't is possible that Peter's vision of the future is just the Nightmare Man messing with his head? Just sounds a bit odd, the description of "Peter travels to Primatech Paper in Texas with his new friend to destroy the virus, which will kill 93 percent of the world's population in the future -- or so he believes."

Aquatarkusman, NO, nothing will ever compare to Twin Peaks.

With that said, can you please check something for me on your Twin Peaks DVD set? I bought a set from Amazon, and I am having problems with discs 4 and 6. On those two discs, I can only play episodes using the "play all" button on the main menu. The "Episodes" menu on those two discs is messed up on my set. I can choose "Episodes" from the main menu and select an episode from the submenu, but the next menu (the one where you choose to play the individual episode with/without Log Lady intro) has no buttons. Can you check your set to see if you have the same problem? I'm gonna send mine back, but need to decide if I'm going to ask for a refund or a replacement.

Why are Assassins' Creed and Heroes related
by Pennsy
Nov 5th, 2007
02:11:48 PM
Because Kristen Bell is in both of them (AC is out tomorrow for the 360, next week for PS3).

From the Ubisoft press release: "Today Ubisoft announces that Hollywood actress Kristen Bell will appear in Ubisoft's highly anticipated video game, Assassin's Creed. She will play a key character in (the game), whose mysterious role is an important part of the game's intricate storyline.

“It was crucial to find an actress who could convey the emotional range and talent needed to play this key character in the Assassin's universe,“ said Jade Raymond, producer for Assassin's Creed. “Kristen is a remarkable actress who was able to bring her character to life in a dynamic way that I don't think anyone else could have done properly. Her professionalism and dynamic personality were a perfect fit for this project."

"I was a big video gamer growing up, so working on Assassin's Creed is my chance to be a part of video game history,“said Bell. “It's something completely different than what I've done before, so it's cool I get to branch out and try another entertainment medium. I was attracted to this project because of the intelligent storyline and the character I play. Plus I admire the artistry of the graphics of video games. I look forward to seeing what my character will look like and I can't wait to play the game and see if I can beat it!"

Way cool. Wonder if she's going to be part of the Limited Edition(s) being interviewed as well.

Next Generation's second season was also short and affected by the last writers' strike in '88. It had one or two standouts, but generally thought of as its weakest season (including basically ending in a clip show). I hope Heroes is having the same sophomore slump and seasons 3-4 will be some legendary TV.

Biggles - I agree. Both Lost and Heroes are better than most of the crap on television. Comparing them is silly. Vanilla or chocolate? Phht, I want both!

Adam Munroe has to be Kensei, because it makes perfect sense. If it is West... well that one is coming from left field. I do wonder if West and Elle are Kensie's children in this timeline though. I know Elle has to be...

EvilWizardGlick - I actually made that connection over the summer and compared them both (Claire/Kensei) to Wolverine and was torn apart for it. All three seem to have the same power to me.

I really hope we have more of Matt's dad tonight, and Sylar of course. :D

What about actors who appear at sci-fi/comic book/genre conventions from here on out? Since the Screen Actors Guild has mandated (don't know how they can enforce it) that actors are on the picket line 20 hours a week, this could throw a real monkeywrench into folks who pay money to see actors like Hayden and KB who may wind up getting pulled from these events to walk a fucking picket line.

The alternate ending, from what I understand, is to solidify the "Generation"s storyline that would have lead into January's new story arc. The old ending left it hanging that would of been resolved in oh two weeks, not maybe till Fall 2008, And we know how people love waiting around big gaps for something(See last year with Lost and Heroes and other shows too a month hiatus)
Do even the writers know where this show's going?
by Sudynim

07:08:54 PM
One of the most disappointing things I've heard on a TV series DVD commentary is that the writers were making it up as they go along. Which makes me wonder if the Heroes writers know what they're doing. Cause I can forgive the slow pacing right now, if there's going to be a pay-off later on. Otherwise, I'll just continue to watch and whine. =^(

"On another front, I have been advised by a source on “Heroes” that Tim Kring has quit the series. This caused wholesale rewrites of three episodes over the past week and weekend."
twin peaks season 2
by Wyndam Earle
Nov 5th, 2007
07:36:13 PM
to be fair, though there are good moments in the begining episodes of twin peaks season 2,the second season doesn't really get going until they introduce the nastiest looney since killer bob, ME, Wyndom Earle! after that, the rest of the season kicks much ass. my only gripe is that they solved the mystery of laura palmer's death a little too early into the season. doesn't really matter though, as there are too many good surprises to mention and everything pays off in the end and then some. too bad there was not a third season, as there was a great cliff-hanger-ending to the second. i wonder if the show would have gone on to greater success if it had been sold to Fox and followed or had been a lead in to the X-files...hmmmmm..interesting? discuss!

I myself first suspected Hiro or having been Kensei when we first learned about him in season one. And I'd first suspected the original Kensei of having been the Hero-killer the moment that we learned that he couldn't die; how else would the murderer of Hiro's father have survived the fall himself? Did nobody else see that coming lol? The only thing tonight that surprised me was Peter's leaving his girlfriend in the future. Correct me if I'm mistaken (and I might very well be), but that's never been done before.

I've been holding out, waiting for something excellent. I knew they had to be building towards something huge, as there were waaaaay too many loose ends floating around, and wish the threads had come together an episode or two earlier...but damn. Tonight was excellent. Although Parkman yelling at Daddy in order to defeat him was kind of weak, but I guess it'd be kinda hard to show that sort of power shift by way of a real-life staring contest. Anyways, leaving McForehead in the future was probably the most creative way of dropping an insignificant character that I've seen in awhile. Big kudos for the "oops" on that one. And judging by next week's preview, we're in for some FX goodies. Definitely makes me glad I've watched faithfully through the slow start.

Where We At
by chrth
Nov 5th, 2007
09:20:18 PM
1) West is upset because obviously Claire made him stalk her by pretending not to be interested. Damn women!

2) HRG is even more officially awesome now as the company is good and he doesn't even realize it!

3) How does one recover a girlfriend popped into an apocalpytic future if you change time?

4) Murray the K was a great villain, I hope he comes back at some point. Kudos Parkman.

5) So obviously Adam/Kensei killed Sulu, since he could get up and walk away. Dang, I was kinda hoping it was Nathan under control.

That was one long setup, but I really like where we're at right now. Next several episodes should smoke.

PS: Any episode with Mr. Muggles is a good episode.

If Adam and Linderman, and Parkman's dad were all working together, and it was their plan to incinerate NYC last season, and Angela was part of that plan, why is he going after Angela this season? I understand why he went after Hero's dad and the bald guy, 'cause they're clearly defectors from the cause, but why Angela? I'm still a little unclear about who was part of which faction within the organization?

"So much worse than being stood up. Just having your date leave you in another time. Yuck." I love it! ROFL SOOOOOO.... I guess the biggest mystery staring us right in the eyes is, why is Claire kissing the quota "cute boy" as her dad lies there dead? I mean, sure, there's a painting of Mohinder pointing a gun at someone, but he's been doing that a lot lately and hasn't shot anyone. Could the cheerleader be HRG's killer? OR, could the shapeshifter have survived? Will Parkman's dad escape and create some bizzare dream in which superboy kills HNR and Claire kisses him? Let's not forget last season when he thought Hiro was going to fight a T-rex lol.

"Public opinion is a weak tyrant compared with our own private opinion. What a man thinks of himself, that is which determines, or rather indicates, his fate." - Henry David Thoreau.

See, look, I can quote, too. Whoopee.

I feel firmly confident in my assessment of the first six episodes of this season. I don't base them on whim, or fashion, or what the masses think, or what you or pursued_by_cock (in his dreams) thinks. I THINK them for myself.

I stated as did others, including some at the TOP of THIS talkback, that the first six episodes of this season sucked. And they did. I continue to stand by that.

Simply providing a nice "climax" and "revelation" to the rehashed plot doesn't solve the problems with the slow pacing, bad writing, and rehashed plotlines in the first six episodes.

Good sex with the missus after six times of her cheating on you doesn't FIX the six times she cheated.

So, at pursued_by_bear_cock's behest, I've returned here, though I had NO PLANS TO. NONE. ZIP. NADA. WROTE THE SHOW OFF AND DON'T REALLY GIVE A SHIT UNTIL THEY END THIS REHASHED VOLUME.

It's nice that Kring could "slightly" improve on last season's poor finale with this episode, but a good term paper doesn't fix the six failing papers he turned in before.

Let's end with another quote, shall we?

"One should respect public opinion insofar as is necessary to avoid starvation and keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny." - Bertrand Russell.

An "[i]nternet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who intentionally posts controversial or contrary messages in an on-line community such as an on-line discussion forum or group with the intention of baiting users into an argumentative response."

I'd, first, you piece of fucking shit, like for you to show me where I posted ANYTHING about HEROES "with the intention of baiting users into an argumentative response."

I DEFINITELY started posting some trollish shit when your sad, silly little pathetic cock-loving ass started daring me to appear after whining like a little bitch about my being here a week or two ago. I'll grant you that. But N-O-T-H-I-N-G that I posted here criticizing THIS SEASON of HEROES SHITTY WRITING was intended to "bait users into an argumentative response."

In fact, you mule dick smoking fucktard, I went to great lengths to explain exactly what I thought the problems were (no "THIS SHOW SUX!" comments) and the fact that I LOVED last season.

So, you may "hate trolls," but your culo-licking ass wouldn't know a TROLL if it stuck its dick in your daddy's ass with you!

I gave specific reasons why I thought this seasons first six episodes sucked and no good episode tonight retroactively fixes those episodes. PERIOD.

In response, I got "just wait," "you don't like to read," and "you're just not a fan," ALL OF WHICH I WENT TO GREAT UN-TROLLISH LENGTHS TO PROVE.

You know, until your frog-cunt-fingering ass spoke up, I might have been more than willing to be more than kind to this episode and MIGHT even have been willing to give Heroes another shot, but it's daddy-dick-loving fatuous fanboys like you who turn people off this show.

No rationality. No distance. No intelligence. Just simple blind adoration. Kind of like an abused wife.

I never acted trollish, simply voiced my opinions, defended them against the sophistry of your and others IGNORANT responses (I "don't like to READ"?!?!? WTF??!?!?), and left.

YOUR STUPID INVITATION TO "MAKE ME EAT MY WORDS" IS WHAT INVITED MY RETURN. I would have been MORE than happy to let you jerk your grandpappy off in peace.

So, go on. I'm waiting. Show me how tonight's episode makes ALL my other criticisms of the last six episodes invalid.

I'm surprised that it doesn't get more love by Herc/Coaxial, especially since Kevin Smith is a producer on it. Reaper is better than Chuck -- there, I said it. I like Adam Baldwin, but Ray Wise is cooler, in comparison. ... As far as ECL is concerned, I actually agreed with many of his problems with Heroes this season -- I just felt he hammered about them too much (honest, constructive criticism for the critic). I would argue that Heroes should NOT have spent six episodes "setting things up" this season. Remember: We had to sit through six lackluster-to-okay episodes before we finally got an episodethat was fun to watch. It shouldn't have been that way. I'm not expecting every episode to be stellar, balls to the wall excitement. But when aspiring screenwriters get lectured about how the scripts they write must be page-turners, where bad-ass shit has to happen every 3rd or 5th page, it just seems inexcusable that we the audience are expected to give TV series writers a pass, for several episodes, in order to "set up" plot points.

is all the praise heaped on Twin Peaks of late (with the DVD release) juxtaposed with all the scorn heaped on Heroes' second season. Twin Peaks moved a lot slower than Heroes (well, except in the UK), yet not only was it tolerated, it was celebrated. Heroes takes six episodes to set up the half season, and we criticize it mercilessly. Why is that?

To frame the question differently: can you imagine if Twin Peaks came out today? Would it have reached a second season? Would it have gone the whole first season? Something tells me it wouldn't have.

And what we really need to ask ourselves, is whose fault is that?

I followed the show religiously during its original run back in 1990/1991. Viewers turned away in droves in its second season. But back then, there was no Internet for fans to commiserate and possibly express to the producers why the show was no longer compelling to watch. Now, the question: Would TP do well today? I find that question difficult to consider, because it's partly due to TP why we have many serialized, quirky, culty dramas on the air -- the show helped to make the idea of such shows more palatable to American TV viewers, I would argue. Without Twin Peaks, there might never have been X-Files, Buffy, Babylon 5, LOST, Veronica Mars, 24 and so on.

Chrth, regarding Twin Peaks
by Elvis Cole Lives
Nov 5th, 2007
11:23:17 PM
"[A]ll the praise heaped on Twin Peaks of late (with the DVD release)" is just that - praise heaped on Twin Peaks OF LATE. Twin Peaks was WIDELY scorned at the time for it's slow second season and, as a result, lost HUGE audience share week after week after week.

Most of TP's praise today is a combo of "retro-lovin'" and the fact that one doesn't have to wait 15 episodes and ONE YEAR to have Laura's killer revealed - you can do it all in about three or four sittings. Twin Peaks slowness was NOT celebrated at the time by any but a VERY select few (see Heroes defenders for current examples).

Twin Peaks got bounced around like a motherfucker by the network as it started to BLEED VIEWERS like crazy.

I'm not one to criticize slowness (I LIKED Lynch's "Inland Empire"), but my problems with the first six episodes of Heroes wasn't slowness per se. It was that the earth-shaking events of last season ("save the cheerleader, SAVE THE WORLD") appeared to have no effect on the characters, that everyone was doing essentially the same shit that they were doing last year DESPITE revelations and reconciliations and that the plot seemed to be cut and paste from last year.

Maybe when Heroes Season 2 hits DVD all will be forgiven - we can fast-forward through Eps 1-6, or at least do 'em in one or two sittings instead of a month and a half.

As for your question concerning TP today and a second season, the answer is probably a resounding "YES!" TP pilot (aired on a Sunday and I remember it well) had great ratings (one of the ALL TIME highest rated pilots) and its first season (on Thursday nights) maintained much of the ratings though not all.

After that, ABC bounced it around on the schedule and the resolution was extremely drawn out (and, to some, dissatisfying). This resulted in a drastic decline in ratings.

The show was pulled.
