At least not since he gave up Tarantino movies trying to be the next Gary Oldman.

Indeed we do. Shame he's been sparse recently. Last thing I saw him in was Herzog's Invincible.

I always thought the line was, "oh my stars and garters," Sounds like Francis better stick to wine, and Sophia should do the movies.

I don't even think that's totally crazy. Apocalype Now isn't shit, but it's wildly overrated and pretty unwieldy. What gets me about this guy is that he makes Godfather, The Conversation, and Godfather 2, possibly the best 3-in-a-row by any director ever, then makes one of the most self-important films ever (AN, and you can't really blame him after his previous efforts), then nothing of any consequence until Dracula, one of the most lavishly surreal films of all time. And then the well was apparently dry. I still count 4 masterpieces from him, which is 4 more than most directors have in them.

Dracula was the moment of no return for Francis. Some of that movie works but mostly it's a camp, badly written/directed and acted(Kanoo Reeves!?) tough watch. He's never done anything decent since then and this sounds like he's continuing that trend. Apocalypse Now is sporadically Hammy too come to think of it! makes you wonder how he actually reigned himself in and delivered The Godfather 1&2 and The Conversation without lashings of cheesy acting and pretentious dialogue!?
Apocalypse Now/Dracula

I love both movies. Dracula is very underrated. It is a masterpiece as far as visual imagery goes, and as someone said in a Beowulf talkback, isnt that what motion pictures should be judged by?

Like I said, I love AN and Dracula, but I look at it this way: He was basically a studio pawn for the original Godfather, albeit a rebellious one. Having someone breathing down his neck forced him to reign in his creativity. He had total freedom for his later movies, and sometimes that can be more of a curse than a blessing. The endless possibilities drove him insane during Apocalypse Now, and he stated in the commentary of Dracula that he had a miserable time shooting it. And aside from Godfather 3, nothing else he's done since 1980 is even worth watching. I dont know, maybe some people need a set of rules to bring out their best.

seems like a film that's judged by the legend of its filming more than its substance.

I watched it again last week cos i felt like it and my fucking god, that film is amazing. brilliant filmmaking. although i did laugh at the rolling up the river bit cos it reminded me of the parody from Hot Shots 2 where Charlie Sheen is paddling up the river and there is his voiceover and it gets mixed in with another voice over and then it's Martin Sheen paddling the other way and they stop and both yell to each other "I loved you on Wall Street!". Fuck that scene makes me laugh all the time.

every masterpiece always has seat-of-despair cineasts shouting "overrated" and "unwieldy" (what the shit?) or attributing its greatness to its troublesome production. being a rebel is just romantic!

Spider-man 2 is also a movie about a guy with spider powers, it's also a special effects heavy summer popcorn movie and it's also unrealistic. Yet, for some reason, Spidey 2 is known as one of the best superhero movies ever made while Spidey 3 is generally considered crap. Hmmm, I wonder why...

I called it unwieldy because it is. The film is too big for itself. It would have been better if it were pared down and more focused. Some of the scenes are certainly their own little masterpieces, but as a whole, that's about all it adds up to: an assortment of pretentious-to-classic scenes. God I feel romantic.

It's a shame he didn't decide to play Professor Snape (a role offered to him first) in the Harry Potter films. Seeing him play across from Gary Oldman again would have been fantastic.

Streaker's post was still pretty funny. He evolved from criticizing your handle to insulting you to insulting the entire AICN readership to declaring his hatred for AICN itself, all while simultaneously bothering to post a talkback on AICN. Made me chuckle, anyway.

What's with the anti-Apocalypse Now talk going on? In my eyes it's Coppola's best film and likely the best film of the 70's. Fucking phenomenal flick. Anyway, I hope these reviewers are wrong, because I was hoping for a real return to form for Coppola.
I've seen it too...

And I agree that it's a total mess. It seems to amount to a question of "am I a butterfly dreaming I'm a man, or a man dreaming I'm a butterfly", which is not-so-very-deep.
