Going goth when you're an adolescent is fine as it's all part of growing up. However there's something indescribably sad about a 31 year old man going goth. I guess a bit like Wooderson but without the charisma and cool factor. Also have you noticed there's a high percentage of goth girls who are ginger and "chubby"?

Um.. Not Goth.

When they've made their own outfits from thrift shopping and some artistic sense, instead of buying them from Hot Topic, they can be goth. When they've learned to appreciate Bauhaus, The Bolshoi, Specimen, Joy Division, and bands that were alive in the 1970s, they can claim goth. When they can remember living in the late 1970s and early 1980s they can be goth.

What they are is not goth. They're too young, too clubby, and too mall-chic. They're Mall-Vampires, at best. They're posers to those of us who were in the goth scene when it existed, and died in 1989 to be taken over by vampire babies and mainstream posers who think buying a pre-made "goth" costume from the mall makes them part of the scene.

Goth, like the beatnik and hippie movements, was about the social climate as much as about the music and clothing. You CANNOT be a hippie today because the motivating social climate-- the backlash of the Vietnam War, primarily-- doesn't exist. You cannot be a beatnik today for similar reasons-- the original beat poets are long gone and what's left are posers who just copy the style. Goth is the same. We were the response to the day-glo 70s & 80s. We were the counter-culture that blended punk and art-house ideals into a subculture. We were NOT losers who bought our clothes at Hot Topic or listened to anything on the radio. The title "goth" never came from out lips-- It was assigned to us by the mainstream media. Anybody who runs around saying "I'm goth" is most assuredly not goth. They've missed the whole point.

I know, the modern 'goths' are large in number, and they've usurped the title and there's nothing I can do about that. If a bunch of kids who buy their individuality from a corporate entity want to play dress-up and claim they're outcasts, I can't stop them. I can, however, shout to the hills that THIS IS NOT GOTH. Goth died.

I don't know why the generations after Gen X can't get their OWN style, subcultures, and fashions. Come up with something new. We did. We gave the world Punk and all it's subsets, for example (extending all the way out to grunge, which I'll apologize for). We gave the world the geek culture-- Before Gen X, there were no proud geeks-- Only Nerds who were ripped on.

What do Gen Y and the later generations give us? Club brat variations of all of the previous generations' cultural movements, but with NONE of the social gravitas or motivating factors behind them.

I spot on this interview. Self-aggrandizing mallrats in Hot Topic gear are the very OPPOSITE of what goths stood for. They're just preppies in a different kind of designer outfit.

Not that I ultimately care. I'm older now, and that shit really doesn't matter. I just get pissed off when I see little poseurs flitting around saying "Look at me! OMG! I'm so goth I shit bats!" -- They are poor representatives for what my favored clique stood for.

No... Not old enough.
by ZeroCorpse

All the original goths are now in their late 30s through their 40s (and even some in their 50s) depending on how old they were when the whole thing started. These two were toddlers when it all started, and wouldn't have been in high school by the end of the movement.

In my late 30s, I'm one of the younger members of the subculture.

I'm also old enough and smart enough to know when to Tone It Down and stop letting my high school clique define me as an adult.

At a minimum, the interview shows that they are creative, self-aware and are actually able to laugh at themselves. The only "posing" I see is the tired old refrain that pop culture was just SOOOOOO much better back when I was young and all of this actually mattered. Kynt & Vyxsin, ignore the usual TalkBack douchebaggery you will inevitably be subject to and go on with your bad selves. Screw what these idiots think.

Sorry about the rant. I generally tone down my disdain for people who parade around screaming "I'm SOOO goth" on television. I'm not sure what set me off. Maybe it's the fact that I find Vyxsin kind of attractive and I lament the fact that she's using this as an opportunity to market goth athletic gear.

So forgive me. I'm not that opposed to their style, itself. If they want to CALL it goth, they can. I think they look good, and I think they sound fairly cool... I just needed caffeine.

You two sound cool. My knee-jerk prejudices still come out in a mangled mass of verbal garbage now and again, and for that I apologize. Sometime around 34 I became a little more xenophobic than I used to be, and thus slightly less cool as a result of it.

I'll ask Doc Pazuzu if he could kindly just delete my freaked-out caffeine-less rants this time... I'd appreciate it. I was being a real jerk.

There is no "real goth." I don't know why I was being that way... Chalk it up to bad flashbacks or something. Forgive me my "get off my lawn" moment.

I'm rooting for you. You're the only halfway cool people on that show, ever.

And this chick is freaky hot. In fact it looks like the Amazing Race has quite a few hot chicks this season. Now, if we can just get the outtakes of a 3 way Lesbian Watersports and fisting scene between The Goth babe and the two OC looking girls in an airplane lavatory, my stock in Trigg Laboratories might start climbing.

just at the other end of the spectrum. They both look ridiculous, talk nonsense because they've never had to struggle for anything, but they're basically harmless and fun to hang out with (in small doses). In Canada, the only goths to speak of in any kind of 'scene' as far as I can see is Toronto, where all other Canadian goths go to die.

Still, not that I'm an expert, but are these two really "goth"? He just looks like a drag queen, and she looks like his boyfriend/boss/top.

CBS now offers an "EYE-lert" service to e-mail the starting times of Sunday programming pushed back by football. I got an e-mail at 7:29 stating that 60 minutes started at 7:27 and the start times for "race" and "cold case" would be 8:27 and 9:27.

Pretty handy if you want to fire up the DVR at just the right time. If not, just pad your recording program by an hour to be safe.
