The dude is also a major asshole. His novels are extremely overrated and anyone who believes in the Mormon religion is out of their fucking mind.

Anyone who confuses art and the artist is a moron. No artist is so exemplary in their personal life such that they can withstand our intense scrutiny. You might as well give up art altogether.

As always, you make me feel guilty for not being able to pack more SF reading in!

Is it just me, or did that 'Postsingular' quotation contain a Pratchet Discworld reference, "turtles all the way down"?

Predates Discworld (and in fact, in Discworld, it ISN'T turtles all the way down; it's turtles all scattered across the universe)

He could've easily done so with all of the products in this article. Kudos to him for not doing so. It gives his articles much more credence (i.e. he wrote the article for the sake of the article, and not solely because he needed some extra cash). And whether he gives a positive or negative nod to what he's writing, by not having those Amazon.com links it inherently gives his articles a less conflict of interest.

The name is Rateliff, not Rateliffe. Also, the first US paperback edition of THE HOBBIT was from Ballantine Books, not Ace which had pirated THE LORD OF THE Rings, but not THE HOBBIT.
Hitler apologia?

From Wikipedia: "[Elaine] Radford’s essay speculates that Card wrote Ender’s Game as an apologia for Adolf Hitler. She points out certain parallels between Ender’s biography and Hitler’s—that they were both third children, that they were virgins until age 37, that they were close to their older sisters, that they were abused by adults, that they both committed genocidal acts. Card, in the same issue of Fantasy Review,13 denied Radford’s assertions. He said that he had no knowledge of any of the Hitler biographical information that Radford cited. Such parallels were “trivial coincidences.” He said he intended Ender as the moral opposite to Hitler: Hitler knew what he was doing; Ender did not. Hitler intended to exterminate; Ender did not. Hitler felt no moral qualm; Ender spends the rest of his life expiating the guilt he feels for exterminating the buggers."
So Tolkien abandoned his attempts at a darker "Hobbit"?

Are you paying attention PJ? If Tolkien decided it was a bad idea, so should you. Every single thing that was wrong with your films was because of something you changed from the text. Except for making Boromir more likeable. That one was a good idea.

How is Christopher Tolkien making any more or less money by having THE HOBBIT manuscripts collected outside the earlier series?

Card is a quite outspoken about his bigotry against homosexuals. http://tinyurl.com/3arm4 http://tinyurl.com/3ctrjo

His books may be great but there are lots of other great books out there that weren't written by people who have beliefs that I disagree with. It will be a long time before I run out of things to read and not having Card's stuff on that list just makes it that much shorter.

He can believe whatever he wants. I just ain't going to give him any of my money.
Thanks for the heads up Adam Balm

Two more to add to the pile! :^) Haven't read a lot of Card, but his "Worthing Saga" was one of the best books I've ever read. I know one of these days I've got to delve into the 'Ender' tales but with long, LONG series like that, I always find an excuse not to start the 1st book...

could suggest that Ender's Game is pro-hitler. Possibly one who has never read any book.

as m2298 helpfully pointed out, Ender was the moral opposite to hitler, as obvious as the nose on your face, if you have read the book.

If you cannot separate an author from their work, you will die alone. Alright, I'm exaggerating, but honestly – you'll miss out on some great stories if you refuse to read anything because you don't agree with a person's beliefs. It's like people who no longer want to see a film with Mel Gibson or Tom Cruise – what a sad bunch they are. I paid to see APOCALYPTO and loved every minute of it... and I'm Jewish! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? Oh wait, Mel Gibson’s a damn fine director and the film had nothing to do with Jews.

...in that I felt really odd, retroactively, for liking Ender's Game after I finished Ender's Shadow. Ender's Game loses its punch when you found out that it was Bean who was exterminating the buggers all along. I dunno. I read it all too long ago but I thought it was a strange choice. It was the first time I actively felt that Card was attepting to "cash in" on the Ender popularity.

Stick with Ender's Game and direct sequels

If you haven't read any of the series, I'd recommend Ender's Game and direct sequels (Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind). The 'equels' or whatever the hell they are called just felt a little like OSC was milking the series. After the second book or so I got bored and wondered off (Look! Shiny things!). And for no reason that I can explain logically, I decided that the author was a little too shameless in his self-promotion after reading his website. There is little chance you'll forget how many books he's sold.

jccalhoun is absolutely right. Card's religious based bigotry does not deserve financial backing of any kind. We need to stop kow-towing to those pious, holier-than-thou fools that speak to imaginary, sky-dwelling "All Fathers" and start treating them like the insane and highly dangerous people that they are.

...you won't buy books (or view films etc.) done by ALL religious people, or just those whose religion you don't like? Please clarify.
