I thought they absolutely worked, plus I found myself checking my watch when last week's half-hour ended, expecting more. I'm so glad the show is doing well, it shows how treating the original material and creators with respect can benefit a series when remaking it. And yes what I'm basically saying is I hope the Spaced remake burns in hell for essentially swatting Wright & co away in favour of McFuckingG! But anyway... yeah more Rashida would be nice.

Before taking his job at The Daily Planet, young Clark Kent was a file clerk for a small paper supply company in Smallville. As a weird coincidence never mentioned in the comics at all, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olson, Aquaman, The Flash, Black Lightning, General Zod, and Louie The Lilac also work there.

...that's not to say they weren't great, but the half-hour episodes are a lot tighter and much more dense with the funny. Now, that's not to say an hourlong office couldn't work, but based on this season's first few hours... I think they're better off doing a few hourlongs a year as needed.

Am I too much of a fun of horrible awkward uncomfortableness? Maybe so, but when Karen yelled at Jim and he stared at the floor, I loved it. When Oscar predicted that Jim would ruin their finer things club, and he did, and Pam whispered "I'm sorry", I loved it. When Dwight didn't take off his mustache, I loved it (and, as someone already quoted, "I think I cut my penis on the lid"). The fact that Andy is the kind of guy who has to belong to exclusive clubs. Definitely my favorite of the season so far.

Spinoff?
by lordgrimplemort
Nov 1st, 2007
11:51:33 PM
So I guess Karen's the spinoff. I like her character, but I don't think it'll work. They should concentrate on making the regular Office funny again before creating a spinoff. It seems like they've run out of jokes so they just keep making Michael and others keep getting stupider and more outrageous. I'm glad they didn't turn Karen insane like Jan (yet), but they probably will in the new show.

I noticed that it was very zippy at the beginning - almost too much with the fast close-in in rapid sucession for the Office - but it was very Firefly-like. Also there was a nod to the shot from his last episode "Business School", of catching both Jim and Micheal in the side view mirror ( BJ Novak pointed in out in the commentary for "Business School" about how much he liked Joss catching both people in the rear view mirror). However, there were no extreme flares in this one or any that I caught on the first viewing.

Noteworthy: The Finer Things Club. Ferris Buehler shout-out. Micheal's "selling" of Toby. Mustashes and women's warehouse uniforms. " I think I cut my penis on the lid." Dwight's bomb making skills. Andy's fallback list. Toby's bowtie. Humiliated!Jim. Micheal gifting Stanley a box with "Property of the US Postal Service" stamped on the side. "Wanted: Sassy, middle-aged Black man..." Book's Main Character: Ashes?

Office/Earl

01:36:11 AM
Anyone else feel like they were watching The Office while watching the My Name Is Earl "Cops" episode tonight? They used the Cops camera much the same way Office uses the documentary film crew cam. Seems as if the earl writers have themselves in a corner with the "Earl in Prison" storyline, and borrowed a page from The Office to get a mostly "prison-free" episode...and it didn't work. It certainly did not warrant an hour timeslot. Some funny moments to be sure...but the weakest Earl yet. Glad Stanley didn't really wanna leave the Scranton branch, afterall. And the phone conversation Michael had with the "top" sales guy at Utica was priceless..."Aren't you the guy who ran over the girl?"...I dunno...this Office II thing has my panties in a huge wad. It better not be set in the Utica branch...I think they've minded Dunder-Mifflin to the core already. Has anyone ever petitioned a network to cancel a show before it even begins production? Just concentrate on the core group NBC...The Office II wreaks of desperation.
I know why people didn't like the hour-longs...

The first 2 or 3 episodes of the season were (compared to other Office episodes) below par. People blamed it on the length, but I think they would have been just as mediocre if they were half-hours. The season has really picked up since Jim and Pam visited Dwight's Bed & Breakfast, though (and that one was an hour).
Last night
by haggardatbest
Nov 2nd, 2007
07:30:27 AM
I am usually a fan of the more subtle episodes, but last night's incredibly broad premise made it my favorite of the season so far. I think it is also one of my favorites of the series. Once they were in the PT Cruiser and revealed to Jim that it was all a big prank I didn't have much hope, but it really came together and made me laugh hard. Best parts: Madge's uniform, Dwight's mustache, Dwight's peeing accident, "that had pictures of my brother's new baby on it", burning Utica to the ground, Karen's gorgeous presense, Toby's bowtie, "it smells like popcorn", Pam's sweater, and Jim's assessment of "Angela's Ashes". Great episode, I can see several viewings in the near future. Worst part: No Creed, Kelly, or Darryl. Also no 30 Rock, but that is another issue.

Dwight peeing in the soda can was the funniest moment of the season so far. It was better that we didn't see what Michael and Dwight were actually doing. Hearing about it over the walkie talkie was great. Michael: "Save yourself! Take Karen to a motel and make love to her!" Needed a splash of Creed and a pinch of Kevin, but not having Ryan appear made up for it. Also, I love Karen, but seeing her as the ex-girlfriend and bitchy boss was a total boner killer.

I felt like I was watching a really bad episode of Earl, which is pretty much true of every flashback to when Earl was bad episode. The prison season had been going pretty well, I certainly don't understand making the second episode of COPS into an hour. Very weak.

The only knock against her is that her hair looks like it's spraypainted on. It's just plastered against her head. Oddly enough, she actually looked a little better after Phyllis took her to the stylist. Ok, I'm sort of kidding there.

I think your question - "Karen has a prettier face, Pam has a bigger rack, It's a tough choice to make" is easily solved. If you are the kind of guy who likes to cum on the face, go with Karen. If you are the kind of guy who likes to cum on the tits, go with Pam. If you are the kind of guy who likes to cum on the ass, go with Phyllis... See, easy...

They kept her real. There was only one moment last season where I thought the writers were trying too hard to make us hate her (when she called Pam a bitch), but overall her character has been easy to like and identify with. And man, was she blunt with Jim in this ep! I hope her character comes back, but not as a villain.

Karen is a very real character, which is the only way they could make her a realistic threat to our Pam. She made us think, "Well it's not so bad if he stays with her." She reminds me a lot of my wife; she's fun and smart, but she'll hand you your ass if you make her mad. Man I love my wife.

It was interesting to see Jim in a tight spot for once where he just couldn't sit idly by and make smug, sarcastic comments. This is good - because while Jim has always been a likeable character he has recently started to irritate me by how he's always on top.

Poor bastard looked like he was about to cry. Loved seeing Jim squirm. Question: How did Karen not get the corporate gig? She's clearly more qualified than Ryan, plus she's made a sale. No wonder that company is circling the drain.
Kelly, then Karen, then Pam

I just have a thing for non-caucasian women. I know Kelly is really obnoxious, but I can't help finding Mindy Kaling absolutely gorgeous. And I love her voice. I know it's a high, girly voice, but I love it. And I'm a bigger fan of a strong female like Karen over Pam's mousiness. Pam's great, don't get me wrong, I just kind of like a strong, independent woman. I'd put her before Kelly, but I can't get past the Indian features and the voice. Of course, the fact that I'm saying any of this is very, very sad...
The women of The Office

03:04:51 PM
Yes necgray, Kelly is ultra-hot as well. So is Angela. And Jan. And Purse Girl. And I am with you in thinking that it is very, very sad to post such things. Every time I come on TB for The Office I end up saying things that make me feel like a 13 year old boy and embarrassing myself over these women. I am far more turned on by these hot, funny, smart, talented ladies (add Tina Fey in there too) than any bikini chick or Megan Fox type. I started watching The Office out of my love for the British version, and I still love it for all the same reasons, but damn if those women don't overshadow some of the jokes. And I'm sitting at work typing these things! Geez. Lame. And also: how many people think Toby joined the Finer Things Club because of Pam's sweater?

I wasn't particularly thrilled with the way they handled Jim after joining "The Finer Things Club."

It seems they used sloppy writing and modeled him after Michael. Fake voices, covering up lack of work, those are straight out of Michael's bag of tricks, not Jim's.

that the Jim/Pam/Karen love triangle thing did not rear its ugly head again. I thought because Pam blew Jim off and slept at the office last week...and now won't let him join her "exclusive" club...that when he finally got to Utica and confronted Karen, I thought he was gonna start having longings for her again. Glad that plot line was not pursued. BTW, the Finer Things Club wrap up at the very, very end on the episode was the weakest wrap up of the series to date. Those short 5 second stingers at the end are usually hilarious (Stanley staring at the busted watermelon on his car comes to mind)...last nite's was blah. Also...could have used more Creed.

I wonder if we're seeing hints of some Jim / Pam tension in the future. In the past few episodes I wonder if "no longer has low self esteem" Pam is turning into, "Jim's not good enough for me" Pam. It's sort of snobby that they created this club. They also don't relize who foolish they all look. Maybe Oscar does: "Other than having sex with men, being in the Finer Things Club is the gayest thing about me."

It is a comedy, not a soap opera. The will-they, won't-they storyline is over, and forcing tension into a finished storyline isn't going to be a good thing. They resolved the story perfectly and started to move forward. The last thing this show needs is to move backwards.

01:17:08 PM
Normally I would go back and argue that it's best for the show because it is the next realistic step for these two particular characters, but as I thought about it I'm not so sure realism is most important anymore. Certainly what Michael did this past week would not be a realistic step even for him, but it was definitely entertaining. I don't know. As long as it's funny or interesting I don't care. I guess I would personally like to see Pam outgrow Jim. It seems to be happening.

I'm sure the "documentary crew" was following in a separate car. Remember, there were cameras by the side of the road when they were looking for the phone and also cameras in the Utica parking lot. Thinking of it as a documentary series, the producers would never rely solely on lipstick cameras.
