but I'm gonna. If it wasn't for Rifftrax, Joel never would have done this. Here's what happened: the old team was wallowing in semi-obscure gigs writing for some of the worst shit on TV. Occasionally in an interview they would be asked about MST3K, and they would say "that's not where I am anymore and we have no plans to get back together". Then Rifftrax came out and started making truckfulls of money. (There was even an interview a month or two ago in which Trace claimed to have never even have heard of Rifftrax and said something to the effect of "that's nice for them, but I'll never do that kind of thing again".Sure.) Suddenly, whatever principals they had to leave and go write for "Sabrina The Teenage Witch" or the "Jimmy Kimmel Show" fly out the fucking window when they realize how much scratch they can make and how popular they can be again. Mike Nelson never left riffing to "find his voice" like these other clowns, and now they're just riding the coattails of his post-MST3K success. Mabye that's too cynical, but it's how I feel. Plus, Josh was never funny. And that's a fact.

Did certainly seem to lack something, but for my money is more in the choice of movies they did.. The Joel-era films were "better" in their cheesyness.. A lot of the Mike-era stuff was really sub par, all things considered.. I really enjoyed the sci-fi flicks Joel did.. I've enjoyed Mike's new venture but I look forward to seeing if Joel still has the "magic".. As for the Bot adventures? Meh... "Gamara is full of meat!"

The show kind of blew my mind. It was one of my first jobs in Hollywood and Joel Hodgson was one of the writers, and I noticed that right away, and it wasn't until later in the production that I realized that the Casting director I was always hanging out with was Roger from the original Dawn of the Dead. My nerdness was sufficiently satisfied.

Once a unified team, now three separate MST3k crews? I don't have a reference, but I had always heard that Beaulieu would never do riffing again unless it WAS Cameron's Titanic. Am I alone in having heard this? Josh Weinstein was a very funny Simpsons writer, but not much of a riffer. As an MST3k nerd, this news has my head spinning... so WEIRD!

I'm with OBSD on this one; Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett have (and will continue to get) my money. Not only do they consitently make me laugh, but I've never heard one of them turn intio a supercilious douche like Joel tended to do... I've never heard any of them beat the dead horse with anything like that tired, "Thank you, Mister White Male Reality?" line that Joel trotted out like a million times...

And yes, the Joel era pretty much rules over the Mike era. I'm so glad I taped so many of those off the Comedy Channel/Comedy Central back in the day, but I would gladly give all of your lives for MST3K season sets even though I realize such a thing is pretty much impossible.

Oh, and I'm sure I'm totally in the minority on this one, but I always preferred the Weinstein Servo to the Murphy Servo. Murphy's voice always seemed too stilted and forced to me.

that was Joel, naturally. But he hasn't been riffing in... what 14, 15 years? Mike has been riffing (or varitions of it, as seen in books like Goth Icky) consistantly since starting with MST3K. Joel went off to write for shitty shows, and then only came back to riffing when he saw how much Mike was making. THAT'S the difference.

Though I love both hosts, I've always preferred Joel to Mike, and even felt like Mike was channeling Joel a bit for the first few years of his stint. but they do riff on good films. There are plenty of crapfests available for them to use. I mean - c'mon, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK? It ain't crap! I am looking forward to Cinematic Titanic as well, and as much as I love The Film Crew, I'd rather seen that go away in favor of Mike/Bill/Kevin joining up with Joel to make Cinematic Titanic a grand success - but they can keep doing RiffTrax forever, because I love that they can do new films as much as they want (like they wanted to do in the old MST3K days).

Joel's a loser for realizing that the guy who replaced him is making money off HIS idea, but Mike is not a loser for never leaving behind one thing and trying to do something different? Mike's entire career is "Yeah, I'm the guy from MST3K. No, not that guy, not the one who created it...I'm the guy who came after him" To bitch out Joel is like being one of those idiots who thinks Kane Hodder is the one true Jason after he was like the 7th guy to play it and keeps living off it just because he's got nothing else going on. I haven't heard any of the Film Crew stuff, or Rifftrax, but I'll give them both a chance as well as Cinematic Titanic. I don't see what's wrong with having OLD MST3K and NEW MST3K at the same time... Seems like a lot of a good thing to me.

What a trip. Three rival MST3K crews. Joel was best on camera, but Mike has been head writer since the Joel era, so it'll be interesting to see what happens. The people upset that they are making fun of "good" movies like 300 are hilarious. How dare those wacky Minnesotans mock the genius that is Casino Royal! Also, the people complaining that Joel's only trying to make money are pretty funny, too. It was his idea, right? I think the world's big enough for two mocking crews. But not three. if Joel said "Mabye some day I'll come back". But he and his whole crew has been adamant that they would never do this again. That's the thing. Mike stuck with it, proving where his heart was. These other guys all just suddenly had a "change of heart" only when Rifftrax became successful. Because of this obvious money-grab, it may be less funny than if they genuinely decided it was time to "get the band back together". Every band that reuinites stricty for the money (after stating they'll never get back together) never sounds as good as when they were originally together. That's my opinion

My take

As my name suggests, I'm a pretty big fan of the show, and here's my impression of this latest news. Mike was funnier than Joel, and the show wasn't very good in its first season before Nelson came onboard as head writer. So all you "Joel is funnier than Mike" should know that Mike was creating a lot of the humor that you found so funny - and don't get me wrong, I always thought Joel was a pretty talented guy. My problem with the Rifftrax/Film Crew and now this new Joel thing is that there's this weird disconnect when its just middle-aged white guys making fun of the movies instead of characters stranded in space and forced to watch them. There's probalby some psychological study that needs to be done on this, because the latter makes me laugh out loud, the former makes me sort of uncomfortable and isn't so entertaining. The Jim Mallon directed thing just sounds lame to me. I feel like all these guys are trying - and I dont blame them for this - to make a living doing something their skilled at but doing so in a way that's a watered down version of the MST3K that was so great. I know it's cheaper to do things this way since the licensing isn't as big a problem, but without a Satellite of Love, Mike/Joel and the bots and the shadows on the screen it's just not all that good. And in a final bit of heresy, I've always thought Bill Corbett edged Trace out as a better Crow.

The team of Joel, Kevin, Trace, and TVs Frank were firing on all cylinders even though I thought Mike was often funnier than the passive Joel. The low-budget quality of MST and the silhouette interactions really is a lot funnier than the disembodied voices of rifftrax. However, more people should skewer Hollywood (old and new) jackasses for the crap they put out on a line-by-line, scene-by-scene basis.

This announcement on the web has been greeted everywhere with all sorts of "Oh thank goodness, Mike sucked so much." Are you all crazy? They were both good. The comedy central sketches and host segments were a lot better than the scifi channel ones, but the actual movie segments, the riffing, was much more consistent and funny in the scifi years than the early years. They just got better and better as they went along. The shows best years were actually its last years in terms of sheer laugh-out-loud. The last few years classics stand right alongside the early greats. No need to crap on Mike or Joel.

Honestly, as some have mentioned here, the entire concept is just BETTER when you have the shadows in front of the picture. You could see them interacting, turn towards each other for jokes, and even interact with the movie, like patting a characters head or something. The riffing is always good, but seeing actual characters interact with the films gave it the real MST3K quality . . . also, one of the best Futurama cameos ever!!

i'm a big mstie. my username Prossor, if anyone knows was the badguy in the classic Warrior of the Lost World episode they did ("this isn't Mad Max, this is Sad Max"), played by the great Donald Pleasence sporting his Blofeld look from You Only Live Twice. the show was great, i like every era and both hosts EQUALLY believe it or not after watching that show for years. at first i liked mike, then joel, then realized they really have their own unique qualities (as cliche as that sounds), joel had more gravitas as a host (a performer at heart), mike was the nucleus for all the funnyness however. however my favorite character/brain was Trace Beaulieu's Crow. truly awesome, this guy was so insane even Joel/Mike, Servo would tell him to pullback in his crazyness at times. loved that guy.

You've aped the perspective that MST3K is bad because it mocks movies and talks over them before. I hear that criticism from a lot of places and it surprises me to hear it from you, because it's bullshit. What about your fucking review of the Mr. Show screening of On Deadly Ground? That sounds like it was worse than what MST3K did, rewinding it over and over again, mocking it nonstop. A lot of the movies they mocked on MST3K were crimes against humanity and dignity, and a lot were charming in their stupid way, and the MST3K fellas clearly felt an affection for them, as we all do. Without fucking fail people who use that "I don't like MST3K because they talk over and disrespect movies" barely watched MST3K if at all. And they are full of shit.

The main difference, it would seem to me, 'twixt Joel and Mike is that Joel seemed to appreciate the goofiness of what he was watching, as well as the insane nature of the show itself. Mike, on the other hand, seemed to be far more cynical. The riffing seemed to go from laughing along with the movie to tearing it apart. Not that it bothered me overmuch. Mike was lightyears beyond "that sleepy eyed guy." Joel could go for ten minutes without saying a word only to give a whimpering joke and then return to silence once more. Mike was likeable, animated, and always cracking excellent jokes. No contest; it's Mike hands down. As to this new project, I'm happy for the new guys, but your ad campaign is kinda insulting... "the ORIGINAL Tom Servo..." whatever. Joel sucks, the old Servo is horrendous, and while Trace is an excellent Crow, he still isn't quite as funny as Bill. But infighting aside, QUIT FUCKING AROUND AND PUT MST3K BACK ON TV!!!!! Do an hour show if you have to. Put it back on Sci-fi, or USA, or VH1 (who has basically done nothing but run shows like MST since MST has been off air) or Fuse, or Comedy Central, or G4, or Spike. There are a lot of networks who could act as a great forum for this kind of show. If all these were in paly back when MST was in danger of cancellation, the show may have continued elsewhere. HELL, JUST SEND THEM STRAIGHT TO VIDEO!! EVEN THE INTERNET, but bring back the show!!!!

Coleman Francis is right - no matter how much I like Mike, Kevin and Bill, their riffing just doesn't have the coolness or the sweetness of the bots in silhouette with either Joel or Mike - and that's largely because of the host segments, where the personalities of the bots were explored... Who can forget Servo singing to Tibby, or Crow getting slacks instead of cool toys? And TV's Frank with Dr. F as the mads? Pure geekamatic bliss... If it were possible, I'd have Trace and Kevin playing Crow and Servo, Trace and Frank as the mads and Joel and Mike alternating as hosts each week - keep Mary Jo as a writer - her Pearl was fine for one ep but grew tiresome - but man, to have MST back would be amazing...

I agree that the Film Crew releases are kind of sad, in a certain sense-- a bunch of middle aged dudes trying to relive past glories. But yes Mike had the sense to say "hey look, riffing is what I do" and has kept up with it. I bought all four Film Crew releases and yes, they vary from hilarious to so-so, just like MST3K did. Mike is the single most talented person associated with MST3K and he is the resaon that people are willing to buy Film Crew DVDs sight unseen.
Ultimate MST3K

If there were an ultimate MST3K, Kevin Murphy would be Tom Servo again and Trace would be preferable to Bill Corbett from a seniority point of view. But Corbett was an AMAZING Crow (once he found his voice). I think the bottom line of all this is, whatever happens, the fans win.

I don't bother with RiffTrax and if Titanic and the MST online cartoon (Or whatever it is that Jim Mallon is doing) don't particularly interest me. But if the Joel Crew would care to do a Film Crew type show I'm sure I'd buy that too. Plus of course there are thousands of hours of REAL MST3K that are getting regular releases, a happy mix of ALL the periods.

And the single best episode EVER was Time Chasers, made without Joel, Trace, or Frank). "That cheese isn't gonna cut itself." Dude.

Mary Jo and Paul

The funniest thing associated with Mary Jo Pehl and Paul Scherstren (I REFUSE to call him "Chaplin"-- what a pretentious little theater geek) was the fast food sketch where the bots name tags said "Mary Jo" and "Paul."

Not to discount their writing contributions, but the one flaw in the sci-fi years was this "everyone who's left gets a promotion" attitude. MST's greatest strength was also its greatest weakness, that it was a gang of midwest theater geeks & local TV people of various talent levels who thought they could do a national show all by themselves. And they did. So you see, my point is, Time Chasers was the best episode.

The whole Joel vs. Mike thing reeks of the old Kirk vs. Picard argument but there is only one truth...Joel pwnes Mike! LOL Mike is a nice guy (met him, Kevin, Trace, and the others at the first MSTieCon way back when) but I thought he never quite as funny as Joel.

Joel = Mike. Seriously who cares? The show was great with Joel, it was great with Mike. It only lost a step when it jumped to SciFi.But, by the end of their run they gained a lot of momentum and did some quality episodes. I'm just gald I got like every episode on VCD! Suck on that losers!
All I know is I miss the Turkey Day Marathon on Comedy Central. I loved that.

I don't get all the Mike, Kevin and Bill haters on this board. I am a Mistie fan and though I read aintitcool, I hardly ever post on here, but this has really ticked me off. It's totally unfair. My wife and I both watch stuff with Rifftrax commentaries all the time and we loved it -- it has a lot of the fun and energy of MST3K. I'll admit that some Rifftrax are more successful than others -- it's much better when applied to bad or cheesy movies like Battlefield Earth or (and I know I'll get slammed for saying this one) 300 than on classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark. But personally I think it's kinda lame and sad for Joel et al to be trying to ride Rifftrax's coattails. And I still find Mike, Bill and ESPECIALLY Kevin heeee-larious! If you haven't tried RiffTrax, you really need to. Film Crew is great too!

Comedy Central era > Sci-fi era... I hated the Sci-fi skits... Bobo was kinda funny sometimes but the rest was damn near unwatchable... I used to turn the channel or fast forward the tape anytime those segments would start... Still tho, the show is all about the movies and Sci-fi had some good ones (i.e. Parts : The Clonus Horror, Werewolf, Texas Justice (aka Mitchell II), Space Mutiny, etc) Still I would kill for any incarnation of the original series to come back to TV...
So wait, it won't be MST3K?

How about Harry Knowles and High Pitch Eric? They could remake some of Abbott and Costello's past movies (BUCK PRIVATES, PARDON MY SARONG, RIDE 'EM COWBOY, KNOWLES AND HIGH PITCH MEET FRANKENSTEIN, et al). This whacky could also tweak familiar routines ("Who's on coke?"). I'm really baked right now but, dammit, I smell money. Today's classic catch phrase: "When are you boys gonna pay the rent?" (Sidney Fields, THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW).

Ok here it is. Try not to explode. Imagine both crews of MST3K together in a spoof of and spoofing "Star Trek: Generations". In a goofy way you could explain why both crews are there yet subtly different and I think you could get a crap load of jokes out of it. I mean you have the whole crew making fun of a movie on two levels, spoofing it within the mythos of MST3k and spoofing the Star Trek movies in general and Generations in particular. Paramount could really turn this into an event right before the re-release of Star Trek. I think it would be HI-Larious.

Sci-Fi used to have them on way back in the day. Now they are never one. Joel was the first and still the best. I always wondered why he left. I think he thought he was going to have some kind of acting career and was a fraid of being typecast as the guy in the jumpsuit.

i guess it's too bad there may be bad blood amongst the past and present team...i liked joel and mike equally, although my soft spot is for sleepy/stoned joel who first brought me into MST3k. I'll watch anything any of them make. I haven't used rifftrax...but if you've ever seen joel's old stand up, you know he was the creative force behind the series. the last season(s) with pearl and bobo were kind of embarrassing, the best parts being that what you were allowed to say on tv (and what they said in the theater) had become a little more open.

Rifftrax and all this stuff is great, but it's just not the same as MST3K! All of you (Joel and Mike and everybody) have gotta team up, get the rights to MST3K and a great terrible old movie to riff on, and work MST3K magic once again! Tons of people will pay big money to see that, I know it. You can sell it online for $20 a download, and I bet a MILLION people will pay it. That adds up to... a lot of money! (And definitely do a spoof on STAR TREK GENERATIONS to start with, that's a great idea.) Thank you for your time and consideration. I expect immediate action on this.

Mike, Kevin and Bill have already riffed on "Star Trek: Generations" and the insipid "Star Wars" prequels over at Rifftrax. It'd be interesting to see what Joel, Trace and Weinstein would do with them... but it would look very copycat.

All the really hilarious stuff ("Manos," the Mr. B Natural short, the "Is This Love?" short, practically every other movie Joel ever MSTied) was done by Joel and the rest of the original guys. I'm looking forward to this return to form -- the good form.

I'll take Mike or Joel in any type of riffing capacity. I bought a DVD copy of "Reefer Madness" where Mike Nelson riffed the movie by himself and the riffing was better than the movie itself! :)
